Doing it a lot can lead to “toasted skin syndrome (症状)”, an unusual-looking spotted skin condition caused by long-term heat exposure (暴露) , according to medical reports. In one recent case, a 12-year-old boy from California developed a skin discoloration on his left lap after playing computer games a few hours every day for several months. “He recognized that the laptop got hot on the left side; however, he did not change its position,” Swiss researches reported in an article published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.Another similar case is a Virginia law student who needed treatment for the spotted darkening on her leg. Dr. Kimberley Salkey, who treated the young woman, learned the student spent about six hours a day working with her computer placed on her lap. As Dr. Salkey later learnt, the temperature under the laptop could reach 51 degrees. That case, from 2007, is one of 10 laptop- related cases reported in medical journals in the past six years. The condition can also be caused by overuse of heating pads (垫子) and other heat sources that usually aren’t hot enough to cause burns. It’s generally harmless but can also cause such permanent (永久的) skin darkening. In veryrare cases, it can cause damage leading to skin cancers, said the Swiss researchers, Drs. Andreas Arnold and Peter Itin from University Hospital Basel. They do not mention any skin cancer cases linked to laptop use, but suggest, to be safe, placing a carrying case under the laptop if you have to hold it on your lap.Dr. Kimberley Salkey said that under the microscope, the affected skin is similar to skin damaged by long-term sun exposure.Major producers including Apple and Dell warn against placing laptops on laps or exposed skin for long periods of time because of the risks for burns. In the past, “toasted skin syndrome” has happened to workers whose jobs require being close to a heat source, including bakers and glass blowers, and in people who gathered near hot stoves to stay warm.Dr. Anthony J. Mancini, chief at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, said that it’s unlikely that computer use would lead to cancer since it’s so easy to avoid close skin contact (接触) with laptops.1.According to the passage, “toasted skin syndrome” can be caused by all the following EXCEPT .A. being close to a heat source or hot stovesB. long period of direct contact to hot laptopC. using one’s laptop with a carrying caseD. overuse of heating pad and other heat sources2.The underlined word “discoloration” in the 2nd paragraph refers to.A. spotB. darkeningC. sunburnD. heat3.It can be learnt from the passage that laptop users .A.should avoid close skin contact with laptopsB.are likely to develop a certain kind of cancerC.have known much about the harm of laptop heatingD.should go to see the doctor at once4.Some computer producers warn against placing laptops on laps for long periods of time because of .A. the risk for burnsB. the risk of droppingC. the risk of breakingD. the protection of back bone5.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? .A. Laptop is DangerousB. Skin Damage is PossibleC. A Bad HabitD. No laps for Warm Laptops二、七选五4. A.Never be afraid to giveB.Plan ahead as much as possibleC.Work out your priorities(优先考虑的事)D.Be disciplined(有纪律的) at all timesE.Make sure everything has its placeF.Stick to a scheduleBeing Well-Organized And Getting Things DoneBeing well-organized and getting things done and what we have done is tried to make them as easy to follow as possible to allow you to implement( 实施 ) them immediately. There is no doubt that being organized does make adifference .1.It is something that you should do every single day and the best way to approach this is to place things in order of importance. Watching that movie may sound like a good idea, but put that at the bottom of the list and focus on things that influence your work, health, or anything else that is key to your survival( 生存 ).2.Next, you should consider trying to plan ahead, so if you know that there is an appointment at a certain location for a certain time, then plan your day around that appointment.3.Knowing where everything is really will allow you to get more things done as you will waste less time hunting for that object that you require to complete your task. Too much time is wasted hunting for keys or that piece of paper and it also just stresses you out and can upset your pace.4.Giving tasks to others will always lead to you getting more done, but it is not just a case of picking anybody to do a task. Instead, you need to make sure that they are capable of doing it without running into any problems and that they do have the correct tools to complete the job.5.Having a schedule will help to force you into completing tasks on time and actually getting more done in the process. The only problem here is that you need to be sensible when working out how long something takes or you will put undue pressure on yourself and this is where mistakes can occur and you will actually then start to get less done.三、完形填空5.Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. Business Stories【答案】1.C 2.B 3.CBIf you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how "foolish" the Finnish people are.Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with the money of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying. The driver would not show the least sign of being nervous and worried. The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration card to the waiter. With such a relaxing check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to get the meals free. The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the pay. From then on, they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly. With so many mistakes in everyday life, surely Finland must be a place to those who love to take "petty advantages"(小便宜). But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have done their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest record of the exact hours they put in.As you can see, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real "gentleman". In a society of such high moral practice, what need is there for people to be on guard against others?1.We can learn from the second paragragh that _____ in Finland.A.all the taxi are very inexpensive and comfortable.B.passengers only pay two US dollars for a taxi ride.C.taxi drivers don’t know the ways in city very well.D.it’s normal for passengers to pay for the drivers later.2. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. Generally speaking, in Finland, workers can get more pay by working long hours.B. The workers and their bosses will make an agreement in advance about the pay.C. The workers are always honest with their working hours.D. The bosses are too busy to check the working hours of their employees.3. It can be concluded that _____.A. Finnish people are really foolish in daily lifeB. Finland has been a good place for cheatsC. the Finnish society is of very high moral levelD. all the Finns are rich and therefore honest4. which of the following shows the structure(结构)of the passenge?A.B.C.D.【答案】1.D 2.D 3.C 4.BCAlmost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart(购物手推车). They will, in a lifetime, push the shopping carts many miles, but few will know—or even think to ask—who it was that invented them.Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time he was in the supermarket business. Every day he would see shoppers lugging groceries around in baskets they had to carry. One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. To create the first shopping cart, Goldman used folding chairs. He out one basket on the seat, and he raised the chair by putting wheels under the legs. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business. On June 4, 1937, Goldman’s first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn’t wait to see them using his invention. However, Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try. After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren’t using his carts.“Don’t you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?” one shopper replied. Goldman wasn’t beaten yet. He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony customers. As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. Not only did more people come—those who came bought more. With larger, easier-to-handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.Today’s shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman’s original model. Perhaps that’s one reason Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937—before the coming of the shopping cart.1. Who invented the shopping carts?A.Some shoppers.B.A supermarket assistant.C.The phony customers.D.An American supermarket owner.2. Why did Goldman hire people to push carts around his market?A.Because he wanted to sell more shopping carts.B.Because he needed more customers to buy groceries.C.Because he wanted people to use the shopping carts.D.Because he hoped to help shoppers carry their groceries.3. A scientist found that different colors have different weight in a man’s mind.So he did many tests and at last he got the result. That is to say ,every color has its own weight in our mind and their order is the same. The heaviest color is red ,then blue, green, orange, yellow and white. The scientist told us that colors also have smell. Can you smell the color? Of course not. Then why did the scientist say so? That is because every color stands for a kind of light with a certain wavelength(波长).It reaches our brain through sense organs.According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the colors they like, and refuse the colors they hate.So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colors you like.Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill.For example, if you stay in a room with red windows, wallpapers and furniture for two hours, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you’ll feel you have been there for only an hour.Another example, if a person walks out of a red room and into a blue room, his temperature will fall. That means our body temperature will change with different colors.1.The purpose of the second paragraph is to tell us _________.A.a red box is heavier than a white oneB.a color has weight in one’s mindC.white paper is lighter than red paperD.you can know the weight of a color by holding it2.Why did the scientist say colors have smell?A.Because every color has its own sweet smell.B.Because we can smell colors with our nose.C.Because people can sense the light from colors.D.Because every color can give off light of the same wavelength.3.We can infer from the text that _________.A.colors have orders in weightB.colors can change the weight of an objectC.people would stay longer in a room with red windowsD.colors can influence our mood and health4.This passage is probably a _________.A.newspaper adB.fiction novelC.children’s storyD.science report【答案】1.B 2.C 3.D 4.D第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)下面文章中有五处需要添加小标题,请从从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出符合各小题意思的小标题。

Christmas had traditionally been a time for my parents to make us happy. In years past,we had a lot of presents here and there, taking over the living room.On Christmas morning,we nervously waited in the hallway until Dad told us everything was ready. We rushed into the living room and let the wrapping paper fly."Here's another one for you," said Mom as she handed me a package.I looked at it,confused.Having spent so much time examining the presents before Christmas,I recognized this one.But it had not been mine.It was my mom's.A new label (标签)had been put on it,with my name written in huge act.Tears filled my eyes and I thought in disbelief about how much my mom must love me to give up her Christmas so I could have a few more presents.I have always remembered that Christmas. It had so they can be used by a computer program. The computer program looks for different kinds of answers or patterns in the data.Big data can have different kinds of information from many sources, such as information that comes from schools, social media sites, companies, and governments. One set of data can have people's names and addresses.Another set can have what they like, where they go to school, and how much time they spend on the computer.Big data can be used in many ways. The government uses it to understand how many people travel on buses or trains. This information is then used to make bus or train systems better. Some schools use big data to understand which children may need extra help in class. The teacher can then give certain students more help or support so those students can succeed in school.Companies use big data, too. It helps them understand who buys their products. For example, one company uses weather data to see when people eat the most ice cream.Big data can be used for good reasons. Some hospitals use big data to predict if a baby who is born too early will get sick. The hospital can then take extra steps to take care of that baby so he or she does not get sick.Big data can alsobe used for bad reasons. It can be used to predict which kinds of people are likely to break the law or hurt others, even if they have not done anything wrong. How can big data be used for good and bad things? It is because the computer programs used to look at big data and understand it are written by people.People think a certain way.Because they think a certain way, they build a model of those ideas. These ideas are then used to look at the data.Sometimes, these ideas are helpful for people or businesses.Other times, bad ideas can cause problems for certain groups of people.(1)This AIn June last year, I had an opportunity to do volunteer work in a small village which is located in northern Australia, far from the cities. Living there is an experience that cannot be fully defined in just words. Although the people of this small village are short of the much material wealth that most of us in big cities have, their positive(积极的) outlook on life is comparable to what we have. The small village suffered a natural disaster (灾难) about two years ago. Many people lost their materialbelongings and their houses. Soon after the disaster, families had to live under one roof in houses that were suitable for just- one family. Instead of feeling bottled in the people felt more of sense of belonging when families had to live together in such conditions. They banded together to help each other in rebuilding their houses. It was still beyond my understanding how family took priority (优先) over anything else. If someone is in need, the family will provide any support needed. In cities, it is said that “Houses are getting bigger, while homes are getting smaller”. In this small village, the home will always remain big Children are taught from an early age that family is worth more than any material wealth that they will come across. They pass the value to their kids, and the cycle continues in keeping family values.I still remember on the third day I arrived in the small village, two elders wanted to adopt me into their tribe (宗族). As part of that process, I was given a Spirit Totem, and was told that I officially belonged to their tribe. One of the elders explained,“No one is a stranger here. You come here, and you become part of us! Can you imagine if we had that outlook in every small village or on every street on earth?Leaving this small village was challenging for me indeed. Not only did my outlook change, but my understanding of how life can be defined in different ways took a turn for the better16. What can we know from the first paragraph?A. People in cities don’t live positivelyB. People in that village live a very poor life.C. The people in that small village are hopeful about the future.D. The writer didn’t want to do volunteer work there.17. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 most likely refer to?A. Especially excited.B. Badly ill.C. very crowded.D. seriously scared.18. What can be the most important in the eyes of the people there?A. Family values.B. Physical health.C. Good living condition.D.
