The
supporting buttresses consist of thicker supporting regions of bone that transmit or resist forces to the base of the skull, and exist around the highly pneumatized midface and nasomaxillary buttresses. The buttress system of the face can be considered a combination of pillars that resist compression, and trusses that resist tension.
Vertical buttresses: nasomaxillary, zygomatic, and pterygomaxillary.
Horizontal buttress: frontal, zygomatic and maxillary.

Caused by a force at the orbital level Fracture line courses through the zygomaticotemporal and zygomaticofrontal sutures, along the lateral orbital wall, through the inferior orbital fissure, and medially to the nasofrontal suture. The fracture ends at the pterygomaxillary fissure.
