I liked how energetic and fun their songs were compared to the traditional erhu tunes. I'd roll down the windows and yell out the lyrics, not caring at all that I'm sure I sounded completely crazy to everyone around us. Music just makes me feel free and alive!At school, I joined the choir and the hand bell ensemble. Singing with all my friends and ringing the bells together was such an incredible experience. When I was just a tiny baby, my mom says she used to sing lullabies to get me to sleep at night. I can't remember that of course, but I do know that I started singing along to kids' songs on TV pretty much as soon as I could talk!My earliest musical memory is from when I was about 3 years old. My grandpa had an old radio that he would listen to in the living room. One day, a beautiful piano melody came on and I was just transfixed. I sat perfectly still, not making a peep, just listening with my eyes closed and a big smile on my face. From that moment on, I was hooked on music.When I started going to nursery school, we had daily singalong sessions where we'd learn simple songs with hand motions and rhythms. Those were always my favorite times of day. I loved learning the new songs and couldn't wait to go home and perform them for my parents and grandparents.As I got a bit older, I started taking an interest in all kinds of musical instruments. Whenever we went to the park, I'd run over to any buskers or street performers I saw and just stare in awe,studying how they played their guitars, violins, flutes, or whatever instrument they had. Sometimes they'd let me come up and look or even try out their instruments which was always so exciting!One day when I was 6, my parents surprised me with my very first musical instrument - a small red ukulele! From that day on, I spent every spare minute teaching myself how to play it by following along to videos online. It wasn't easy at first and my fingers got all sore from pressing down on the strings. Playing music has also helped me do better at school since it requires patience, practice, and concentration.In addition to the ukulele, I've also started learning to play the guzheng which is a beautiful ancient Chinese zither-like instrument. It has such a unique, almost otherworldly sound thatI find really calming and mesmerizing. My guzheng teacher says I'm a fast learner which makes me really proud. Who knows, maybe I'll be a professional guzheng master when I grow up!Music isn't just about playing instruments though. I also love singing and recently joined my school's children's choir. There's nothing quite like the feeling of joining your voice together with others to create wonderful harmonies. Our choir has performed at school events and talent shows which is amazing experience, even if I still get a bit nervous on stage sometimes.I'm really grateful that my parents have been so supportive of my musical journey from such a young age. They encourage me to practice regularly and never make me feel bad if I'm making a bunch of noise at home with my instruments. We even have family music nights sometimes where we all sing or play together - my dad plays the erhu which is a Chinese fiddle, my mom dabbles in the piano, and like I said, my grandparents teach me folk songs.To me, music is so much more than just sounds and melodies. When I hear a beautiful song or piece, I feel like it speaks directly to my heart and soul. It can make me laugh, cry, dream, remember, or just feel so many powerful emotions all at once. A soaring violin concerto by Beethoven and a traditional pipa ballad from ancient China can both move me in amazing ways, even though they come from completely different times and places.That's why I think music is one of humanity's most special creations and gifts. For thousands of years, every culture around the world has made music a vital part of celebrating life, expressing ourselves, telling stories, and bringing people together through shared experience. Just imagining a world with no music is unthinkable to me...it would be devoid of joy, creativity, and connectivity.My biggest dream is to become an accomplished musician when I grow up - maybe a singer, instrumentalist, composer, or perhaps all three!
