Elizabeth, she is a lively,attractive,self-determined,brave and intelligent girl. She has her own opinions and not easy to change. Her vigor andcharm make her get many friends and admirers.Such as Collins,Wickham and Darcy.Among them,Darcy is the most affectionate one.He changes his arrogant attitude because he loves Elizabeth.Even going against his aunt Lady Catherine’s will,he still want to stay with Elizabeth.Mr Darcy helps Wickham who he hates very much and give him lots of money for Elizabeth. What a charming woman Elizabeth must be!She also has obtained so much knowledge from the books and she forms her own values. What makes she distincts from all others is that she has the courage to express her ideas.Of cause, nobody is perfect,Elizabeth has shortcomings, too. She has a tendency to judge on first impressions. For example, she defines Darcy as a stern,cold-hearted and proud man after Darcy’s haughty rejection of her at the dance. And she trusts Wickham’s unilateral words.I think that it’s stupid to judge a person by the first impression and always have prejudice on a person who you don’t like.Besides, she often remarks other people with biting and sarcastic tone.It can really hurt others. In my eyes,Pride and Prejudice represent two characters:Darcy and Elizabeth.I think the title of this novel tells us the power of true love is great,Pride and Prejudice will disappear before it.From this book,I also know love and marriage is closely associated with property and society.Property is not everything in the life, but without it, we can do nothing. This is called reality. But if you only married forwealth, your life will be miserable and bitter. An ideal marriage should be based on mutual affection, respect and the same interst. In a word,Pride and Prejudice is a good book which is worth everyone reading.。
Book report of Pride and prejudicePride and prejudice is a famous novel throughout the world. The author of Pride and Prejudice is a British novelist, Jane Austin. Austin was born in a mid-class family. Her father was a local vicar. Although her family was not very rich, her father attached great importance to her education. Influenced by her father, Jane read many literary works when she was young. Jane was unmarried all her life and her novels did not earned her great fames when she was alive. After her death in 1817, Jane’s novel became popular across the world.Jane Austin was known for her excellent writing skills of narrating the country love stories since she lived in a small country town all her life. Her other novels Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Emma were all about the marriage and love between gentleman and ladies in countryside. Austin authentically and intimately describes the quiet, day-to-day country life of the upper-middle-class English. The novel is named Pride and Prejudice because the principal male character Mr. Darcy was pride at first and the principal female character Elizabeth had prejudice against Mr. Darcy. Elizabeth first met Mr. Darcy at an assembly. Soon Mr. Darcy fell in love with Elizabeth but Elizabeth disliked Mr. Darcy because of his haughtiness. When Elizabeth met Mr.Wickham who was Darcy’s childhood playmate, she was told that Mr. Darcy treated Wickham badly. Later Elizabeth discovered that Darcy urged his friend Mr. Bingley to leave her sister Jane. Elizabeth prejudiced against Darcy deeper and deeper. As a result when Mr. Darcy proposed to Elizabeth, she refused directly. Mr. Darcy wrote a letter to Elizabeth in order to explain his relationship with Wickham. From then on, both of them have changed their attitudes and the misunderstandings gradually eliminated. When Mr. Darcy saved her little sister Lydia and her family’s reputation, Elizabeth lost her heart to Mr. Darcy. Darcy’s aunt Lady Catherine is a domineering woman who tried to make her daughter marry Darcy. One day Lady Catherine went to Elizabeth’s house and asked her to break up with Darcy. To Lady Catherine’s surprised, Elizabeth refused to obey. Angry and displeased, Lady Catherine told Mr. Darcy what Elizabeth said. Few days later, Mr. Darcy proposed to Elizabeth again and this time Elizabeth accepted his proposal immediately. They married soon and lived together happily.I read Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice when I was in middle school. At that time I thought the story was all about Elizabeth and Darcy’s love story. But when I read it again in college I find the book tells us more than love story, but the marriage and family. In my opinions, there are little similarities between courtship and marriage. Noteveryone can marry someone who they love deeply. One can easily fall in love with a handsome person but they have little chance to get married if they have completely different social statues and education background. Elizabeth is a lucky woman since she fell in love with Mr. Darcy who is intelligent and wealthy. Mr. Darcy can be a sweet lover as well as a responsible husband. Bur if Elizabeth is not pretty enough and smart, it is rather difficult for her to find an ideal husband. I don’t like Elizabeth’s criticizes on Charlotte. I personally like Charlotte best because she treated Elizabeth as her best friend from beginning to end. She never envy toward Elizabeth. When Elizabeth married with Mr. Darcy, Charlotte gave her best wishes sincerely. Some people think Charlotte’s marrying with Mr. Collins is a thoughtless decision but I can understand Charlotte’s decision. In a society where women are not allowed to work, it’s acceptable to treat ensuring fundamental material needs as the primary object of marrying a man. Charlotte was already 27 years old. If she insists on seeking for a man she loves, she may be an old maid till her dying.Comparing to the main character Elizabeth, I’m more interesting in her sister Jane, a very gentle and kind girl in this book. She never see a fault in any body. I have never met such a wonderful girl in my life. I can’t understand that Jane be so kind that she never doubt people around her.She ignored Mrs. Bingley’s unkind behavior and made up excuse for Mr. Wickham when she heard of Mr. Wickham’s shameful past.I don’t particularly like the main characters in Pride and Prejudice as well as the author’s idea on marriage but I do appreciate her satire. Apparently Jane Austin is good at portraying comic figures within a few details and language. For example, Mr. Collins is one of the comic figures. It’s quite suffering for me to read Mr. Collins’ letters; he used lots of big words, wrote long complicated sentences. He was self-conceit and vain. Mrs. Bennet is a woman of little information and uncertain temper. She is eager to marry off her five daughters. To sum up, Pride and Prejudice is a book worth reading. It expressed several different ideas of marriage through the story of Elizabeth and Darcy, the story of Jane and Bingley, the story of Lydia and Wickham and so on. Since the novel was written more than 200 years ago so some ideas in it may be hard to understand now. But there is still something that we can learn from the novel.。
Book report of Pride and Prejudice外国语学院2010级英语5班 (20104169)Pride and Prejudice has been valued as most successful and popular masterpiece among all the novels written by Jane Austen. The novel describing several different marriages among young women of the middle class, which reveals that love is the foundation for a happy marriage, and also should be based on a large amount of money. Pride and Prejudice also reflected Jane Austen’s marriage view: It is wrong to marry for the property, money and position. She emphasizes the importance of the ideal marriage, and regards men and women's emotion as the foundation stone which concludes the ideal marriage. The story of Pride and Prejudice took place in the time of the Regency in Britain. At that time, Britain was at the period of transition from the earlier stage of Capitalism to Capitalist Industrialization. In the countryside, the aristocratic family still held great power and right that country squires were likely to fawn upon them. However, as the development of Capitalism and the expand of the rank of rich people, the distinction between social strata was becoming smaller and smaller, while money was getting more and more important in people’s mind about social value. The author, Jane Austen, was a British novelist who was born in a small country town. Austen didn't go to regular schools, but she read many literary works at her parents' guidance. She started writing about the age of 20, and published six novels. Jane was unmarried all her life. She described a truthful picture of her world, especially the marriage and love between gentleman and ladies by her meticulous feminine observation. It mainly describes the development of the relationship between Elizabeth Bennet, an intelligent young woman and the daughter of a country gentleman, and Fitzwilliam Darcy, a rich and haughty aristocratic landowner. The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England. The writer Jane Austen disclosed mid-class young ladies’ different ideas ofmarriage and love through describing the different ways in which the Bennet girls doing with their marriage problems, and this undoubt edly shows the writer’s idea about love and marriage: it’s wrong to get married just for property, wealth and status while neither would it be without caring about those elements. Jane Austen just attached great significance to marriage through her novel b y telling people that marriage should be regarded carefully cause it is not a game you could just enjoy without prudent consideration. She also wanted to deliver information that marriage should be based on real love between the lovers. Besides, marriage does not mean the act of uncontrolled passion but a complex engagement between the marrying couple and society.Elizabeth was a clever and smart girl, although she was not the most beautiful one. She was also an independent girl and always had an individual opinion, because Elizabeth was an educated girl, although she learned by herself. So education is very important to women. I think Elizabeth has personality ethic which caused her independent idea about love and marriage and in consequence she earned a happy life.Darcy was handsome man and he seemed very noble. He was very wealthy, but he was very proud and rude in other people’s eyes. Because of the education he had in his childhood, he first ignored Elizabeth’s merits because of the social position she was in and the relatives she had. But later, he realized Elizabeth’s smart and beauty and proposed to her.Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage is a perfect one. The female subject Elizabeth is a mid-class girl, and Darcy proposed to her regardless of the gap between them, but Elizabeth refused because of his pride had formed Eli’s prejudice. Cause Darcy’s pride was a suggest of status gap between he and Eli, he wouldn’t have the same thought with Eli and consequently the ideal marriage. But later Darcy’s doings especially his change of the prideful manner eliminated Eli’s misunderstandings and prejudice about him, and Elizabeth accepted his proposal. At the beginning of Pride and Prejudice, a sentence reads “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” It not only reflects Austen’s opinion towards marriage that money is very important, but also reflects the reality of the British society at that time: moneywas at the first place, men played an important role in the society, but women had no position in the society. In Austen’s opinion, a marriage that both had money and love is a perfect one. Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage just coincided with Austen’s basic requirements. It was Elizabeth’s optional marriage based on her personal value that made her get the final happiness and curbed Darcy’s arrogant as well. They thus established an equal relation based on mutual understanding and respect. So their marriage was the most harmonious one in the novel.Jane was the oldest in Bennet’s family. She was the most beautiful one among her sisters. But she was shy and lack of self confidence. So she was afraid to speak out that she loved. Bingley was also very wealthy, but he was more approachable than Darcy. Similar to Jane, he was lack of courage and had no definite views of his own on his marriage. They were met on a ball. Jane was attracted by Bingley’s handsome appearance, and Bingley also indulged in Jane’s beauty. So they fell in love with each other at the first sight. Although Jane loved Bingley very much, as a lady, she never showed her love. And she was within an inch of losing such a good man. Bingley was also not a strong-minded person. Influenced by his friend Darcy and family, he left Jane. But fortunately, this couple got married at last. In my opinion, their marriage was just based on the attraction between each other. Actually, they were lack of confidence and understanding with each other. Although this marriage appeared a happiness one, some crisis was hidden. The style of her works is humorous and rich in comic conflicts, so many readers love them. From the late eighteenth to the nineteenth century, vulgar and boring sentimental novels and gothic novels were full in British literary. Bu t Jane’s novel iconoclastic showed mid-class of daily life and pastoral scenery in British countryside at that time which had not been capitalist industrial revolution impacted,. Although the breadth and depth of the reflection was limited, it played good effect to change the vulgar atmosphere in novels.Pride and prejudice are our common weakness and shortcomings. Every person actually is easy to be driven by his own subjective impression. So it can comment easily to other people under incorrectness, then it will cause misunderstandings between each other. A person’s first impression can affect many things. Not he mustchange, but you should more deeply know about him, then you will have more objective opinion, just like the heroine's opinion of Darcy in the novel changed because of knowing. Or if the people in the world no longer have pride and prejudice these two bad behavior customs, this world will more harmonious and friendly.。
Book Report about Pride and PrejudiceRecently, I read a book titled Pride and Prejudice, which impresses me a lot. Therefore, I write a book report about it so that I can share what I feel and what I learn with others.Pride and Prejudice displayed a love story about Elizabeth Bennet, one of a squire’s five daughters. Bennet family has five daughters. Jane, a shy girl, is the eldest and most beautiful, most elegant of them. Lizzie, also named Elizabeth, is the second daughter, who holds a belief that she can find her true love ignoring the wealth and the social class. One day, a new neighborhood, a rich man named Bingley, attracts the interest of Mrs. Bennet. So Mrs. Bennet invited Bingley, Bingley’s sister and his friend, Darcy who is a much richer man. The ball is coming. When they arrived in the ball, Bingley was attracted by Jane, so did Jane. However, Darcy looked down upon Elizabeth and her family, which was regarded as arrogant. Due to Lizzie’s pride, she decided to ignore Darcy. Later, Darcy found Elizabeth cute, vivacious and charming. Therefore, in the other ball, he asked Elizabeth whether she would like to dance with her, and she agreed. After dancing, Darcy fell in love with Elizabeth.Caroline was jealous to Elizabeth because Darcy treated her differently. What’s more, Caroline and Darcy persuaded Bingley not to marry with Jane, because they thought that Jane didn’t love him. Then Bingley, his sister and Darcy went back to London without leaving a piece of word. Janewas so sad because she loved Bingley so much. Also, even though Darcy appreciates Elizabeth, he couldn’t bear the rudeness and impoliteness of Elizabeth’s mother and her younger sisters. He left with Bingley together. Later, there was a big thing happening in the Bennet. Due to net having a son, Bennet’s legacy will be signed away by Collins, who is a conservative, obsequious minister. At first, he fell in love with Elizabeth, and he proposed to Elizabeth. But Elizabeth refused him. Later, Collins married with Elizabeth’s friend—Charlotte. Then, a handsome military officer, Wickham, attracted Elizabeth. He lied to Elizabeth that Darcy misappropriated his money, which made Elizabeth detest Darcy more. After marrying with Collins for a while, Charlotte invited Elizabeth to their home. Also, Elizabeth met Darcy at Catherine who is Darcy’s aunt when she was inviting to her estate.Darcy couldn’t control himself, so he proposed to Elizabeth. However, Elizabeth refused his propose, reasoning that he damaged the relationship between Jane and Bingley as well as Elizabeth could n’t bear his arrogance. When Darcy realized his misbehavior made Elizabeth misunderstand him, he gave a letter to Elizabeth telling her what happened to explain, and then he left. Next summer, Elizabeth met Darcy in his estate with her uncle and aunt. Elizabeth found that Darcy changed a lot; he was polite, modest to Elizabeth’s uncle and aunt. Therefore, she changed her attitude to him. Just at that time, Elizabeth got a letter from home telling that Lydia ran away with Wickham, which made her embarrassed and sad. But Darcy helped them solve the problem. Furthermore, Elizabeth transformed the prejudice into love. Moreover, Jane and Bingley were ready to have a wedding after experiencing a lot of barrier. However, Mrs. Catherine came to find Elizabeth angrily and asked her to assure that she wouldn’t marry with Darcy. Elizabeth refused to promise to her due to the fact that she fell in love with Darcy deeply. The next morning, after hearing the argument between Elizabeth and his aunt, he came to find Elizabeth and proposed to her again. Eventually, Elizabeth agreed Darcy’s propose. And they lived a happy life in the end. After reading the book, I was impressed by the heroine Elizabeth in the book. She has a clear understanding about marriage. Also, she has a special thought about marriage, just marrying with someone who she really loves instead of marrying with someone for loving his money or social status. From her thinking, Ifeel that she is a girl who is keen of free, different to otherpeople at that time so that she has special charm. What’s more, I realize that even though someone is rich and high-social-status, he should be modest and polite to everyone. Because being modest and polite shows individual mastery as well as noble spirit. If they look down upon others, they would n’t be respected by others due to their rudeness. What’ worse, they may miss their love just as Darcy and Elizabeth. Therefore, people should be polite and modest to whoever they meet with. Also, after reading the book, I come to understand that people shouldn’t judge a man just meeting once. It may cause some mistake. Just as the old saying goes, don’t evaluate a person on the basis of appearance. Because people would change, also, people may hide some character when they meet the strangers. But if they have a better understanding between each other, they will find something charm and attractive from each other. And then they will become friends, partners, may be lovers. There is no denying that people may be distinguished by wealth or social status. But as a modern person, we should hold an equal attitude towards each other. We should be friendly to everyone, no matter who they are. After reading the Pride and Prejudice, what impresses me most is that Darcy helped Bennet’s family to find Lydia and Wickham. Darcy gave money to them so that they can have a wedding in London. What’s more, Darcy gave money to Wickham, which let him have a good position in the army. Even though Wickham had spoken ill of Darcy, Darcy still helped him. From this case, I know that Darcy really is a kind-hearted man. For his good personality and change, he let Elizabeth fall in love with him. From this book, I have learned a lot, such as the real meaning of love, the importance of being modest and polite and so on. Thus I recommend this book to everyone.。
A Book Report of Pride and PrejudicePride and Prejudice is a novel created by Jane Austen. The novel mainly describes the manners, upbringing, morality, education and marriage in the landed gentry society of early 19th-century England, especially about young women who are going to be married. Here goes the main plot of the novel. Mrs. Bennet has five daughters who are not married yet. According to the law then, if Mr. Bennet, her husband dies soon, she and her five daughters will be without home or income. So, the primary for Mrs. Bennet is to find good husbands for her daughters quickly. The story begins with Mr. Bingly, a wealthy young gentleman renting a country estate near the Bennets called Netherfield. Mr. Bingly finds Jane, the eldest daughter of the Bennets very charming, and they begin to grow close. Mr. Bingly is very amiable, but his friend, Mr. Darcy is a very arrogant man. Mr. Darcy is so proud that despite his huge wealth, handsome appearance, he is not welcomed by almost all the people, including Elizabeth, the second eldest daughter of the Bennets. On one hand, Elizabeth finds Darcy a very haughty, self-centered and annoying man. On the other hand, Darcy thinks that her family is of low status and the behavior of her sisters and parents is very rude. Later Elizabeth begins a friendship with Mr. Wickham, a militia officer who is of long personal acquaintance with Darcy—they grew up together. Wickham tells her he has been seriously mistreated by the proud man; Elizabeth seizes on this news as further reason to dislike Darcy. Ironically, Darcy begins to find himself drawn to Elizabeth.Mr. Collins, Elizabeth’s cousin who is going to inherit her family’s property when her father dies, comes to visit the Bennets. Mr. Collins is a self-important, obsequious and pedantic man. He proposes to Elizabeth, but Elizabeth rejected bluntly. However, he soon recovers by marring Elizabeth’s close friend Charlotte Lucas. Unfortunately, Bingley leaves Netherfield abruptly. Elizabeth is convinced that Darcy and Bingley's sister have conspired to separate Jane and Bingley. In the spring, Elizabeth was invited to visit Charlotte. She meets Darcy and his cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam during her visit. Elizabeth learns from Fitzwilliam that Darcy prides himself on having separated Bingley from Jane; while Darcy proposes to Elizabeth at that moment. Incensed by his high-handed and insulting manner, she abruptly refuses him. When he asks why, Elizabeth accuses him of separating Jane and Bingley and mistreating Wickham. Deeply shaken by Elizabeth's accusations, Darcy writes her a letter. It turns out that Wickham is indeed a conscienceless person. Regarding Bingley and Jane, Darcy explains that he thought Jane is cold to Bingley, so he aimed to separate them to protect his friend from heartache. Darcy admits his 'repugnance' for the 'total want of propriety' of Elizabeth's family, especially her mother and three younger sisters. This letter explains everything. Elizabeth feels very ashamed for her long-time misunderstanding of Darcy and also for her family’s improper behavior. Some months later, Elizabeth visits Pemberley, Darcy's estate with her Aunt and Uncle Gardiner. There she meets Darcy unexpectedly. Darcy is very polite to her andthe Gardiners. Their relationship develops quickly. Unfortunately, Elizabeth receives the news that her youngest sister Lydia has run away with Wickham. Luckily, Darcy makes great effort and sacrifice to get Lydia and Wickham married and thus saves the fame of the Bennets. In the end, Bingley marries Jane while Darcy marries Elizabeth. My favorite character is Elizabeth. She is a lively, attractive, self-determined, brave and intelligent girl. Her vigor and charm get her many friends and admirers. Her father and her sister Jane love her and her close friend Charlotte trusts her. She has many admirers, such as Collins, Wickham and Darcy. Among them, Darcy is the most affectionate one. He is so attracted by Elizabeth that he is willing to change his values, go against his aunt’s will, help Wickham whom he hates so much and marry Elizabeth in spite of her little fortune and low social status. What a charming woman Elizabeth must be! Elizabeth is self-determined. When Collins proposes to her, she refuses him bluntly regardless of her frivolous and narrow-minded mother’s insistence. She doesn’t like Collins and that’s the fact. No one can force her to marry a man whom she doesn’t love. Besides, Elizabeth is very brave. She is so dauntless that she would not flatter Lady Catherine or any other person who is rich and powerful. When Lady Catherine demands that she never accept Darcy’s proposal, Elizabeth refuses to bow to her demands. What’s more, Elizabeth is a very intelligent woman. She has obtained so much knowledge from the books that she forms her own values. What makes her distinct from all others is that she has the courage to express her ideas.Of course, Elizabeth has shortages, too. She has a tendency to judge on first impressions and perhaps to be a little selective of the evidence upon which she bases her judgments. For example, she defines Darcy as a stern, cold-hearted and proud man after Darcy's haughty rejection of her at the dance. And she trusts Wickham so much that she takes all the words he says as facts. As a result, Wickham’s slanders on Darcy strengthen her prejudice upon Darcy. Besides, she often remarks other people with biting wit and sometimes sarcastic tone. It can really hurt others. The major theme of Pride and Prejudice is that social standing and wealth are not necessarily advantages. The combination of the two couples, Bingley and Jane and of Darcy and Elizabeth explains it. It also describes the ineffectual parents. Elizabeth’s parents, especially her mother, behave improperly and haven’t bred their children in the right way. Lydia’s foolish behavior is deeply infected by her mother. Kitty, rescued from Lydia's bad influence and spending more time with her older sisters after they married, improves greatly in their superior society.Pride and Prejudice employs the narrative technique of free indirect speech. By using narrative which adopts the tone and vocabulary of Elizabeth, Austen invites the reader to follow events from Elizabeth's viewpoint, sharing her prejudices and misapprehensions. The language used is very exquisite and formal. Besides, Austen gives each character his or her own way of speaking, which makes the novel interesting, colorful and vivid. In a word, Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece.。
Reading Report of Pride and PrejudicePride and Prejudice is one of the English author Jane Austen’s representative works. This book is considered as the treasure of the world literature because it broke through the conventional thought of that era. It not only perfectly reflected the relationship between money and marriage in 18s but also delivered the Feminism of Jane Austen herself.Introduction of the author: Jane AustenThe English female author Jane Austen is regard as the most significant writer of the English literature, only second to Shakespeare. She lived from 1775 to 1817, born on December 16th, 1775 at Steventon, Hampshire, England. Her family background and growing environment have played a crucial role in her creation. Jane Austen was one of eight children of an English clergyman and she was educated mainly at home. As a clergyman's daughter from a well-connected family, she had ample opportunity to study the habits of the middle class and the aristocracy. At an early age she began writing sketches of popular novels for her family's entertainment, and soon she was given the accomplishments of her novels. She lived a remarkably quiet and domestic life in the ruralsouth of England. Because of her high-demanding, she has never married through her life and died at 41.Jane Austen's novels were witty, warm and ironic portraits of the privileged classes of 18th- and 19th-century England. Although Austen was not a high-yield writer (only 6 finished novels and 1 short fiction), her novels were still highly prized not only for their light irony, humor, and depiction of contemporary English country life, but also for their underlying serious qualities.Historical backgroundJane Austen cannot be said to be an absolute feminist, but she indeed has women consciousness and unique feminist ideas. She expressed her thoughts by creating animated characters in her novels to fusing romantic love with serious issue including feminism. From the end of the 18th century to the early 19th century, the British litera ry were flooded with the vulgar and boring “sentimental novel” and “Gothic novel”. At that time, Jane Austen’s novels unconventionally showed the life of British countryside which had not yet been the influence by the capitalist industrial revolution. In her novels, there were amount of description of daily life and bucolic which changed the vulgar ethos at that time and played a good role inconnecting the significance in the history of the development of the English novel.Like Austen's other works, the p lot revolved around the heroine’s activities and efforts to reveal the vices of British social trends. She blasted the thought of marrying as a woman was just meant to seek economic security or to improve the economic status. In her novels, the female characters are pursuing the equality with men in thoughts and feelings in communication. She appealed strongly for the Equal Rights on the social status, adhered independent observation, and insisted the free opportunity of choosing husband. This sort of practice in England at the time has no doubt that it was almost tantamount to a cry of revolt.Something more: FeminismFeminism is a collection of movements and ideologies aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights for women. This includes seeking to establish equal opportunities for women in education and employment. Feminism i s “an advocate or supporter of the rights and equality of women”Feminist activists campaign for women's rights – such as in contract law, property, and voting – while also promoting bodily integrity, autonomy, and reproductive rights for women. Feminist campaigns havechanged societies, particularly in the West, by achieving women's suffrage, gender neutrality in English, equal pay for women, reproductive rights for women (including accessto contraceptives and abortion), and the right to enter into contracts and own property. Feminists have worked to protect women and girls from domestic violence, sexual harassment, and sexual assault. They have also advocated for workplace rights, including maternity leave, and against forms of discrimination against women. Feminism is mainly focused on women's issues, but because feminism seeks gender equality, some feminists argue that men's liberation is a necessary part of feminism, and that men are also harmed by sexism and gender roles.Summary of the novelThis novel mainly centered on the love story of Bennet’s 5 daughters. Once at a dancing hall, it is obvious that Mr. Bingley has fell in love at the first sight with Miss Jane because of her stunning beauty. Mrs. Bennet was so excited that she could not hold her manner and declared publicly she would have a daughter married soon, which frightened Mr. Bingley away. Mr. Collins, a distance nephew of Mr. Bennet, came to ask a marriage to one of his cousins before Mrs. Bennet was able to get clear why Mr. Bingley left suddenly. After receiving the hint from Mrs. Bennet that Jane already had an admirer, Mr. Collins turned to Elizabeth withoutwasting a minute and to Miss Charlotte Lucas two days later after refused by Elizabeth. It was difficult for Mrs. Bennet to recover herself as a result of the “deadly stupid” decision made by Elizabeth until she got the news that Lydia finally married Mr. Wickham, though the marriage was built on the basis of ten thousand pounds. Mr. Darcy offered the money and did everything departing from his will just because he loved Elizabeth so much. He could not hide his feelings anymore and showed his affection to Elizabeth at last. This plot is the climax of the novel as the prejudice of Elizabeth to Mr. Darcy was exposed and removed since then. When Mr. Darcy once again proposed marriage Elizabeth, she accepts, and the two become engaged. In the end, all the people in the novel are happy, and this is the happy ending. The Themes of Pride and PrejudicePride and Prejudice takes the marriage as main line, and the main themes of it are pride and prejudice. We can see from the passage that the author has taken many measures to show the themes and to express her idea.First of all, how does the author express the pride? There is one sentence arousing my interests. It is ““pride,” observed Mary, who piqued herself upon the solidity of her reflections, “is a very common failing I believe. By all that I have ever read, I am convinced that it is verycommon indeed, that human nature is particularly prone to it, and that there are very few of us who do not cherish a feeling of self-complacency on the score of some quality or other, real or imaginary. Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us.”” The author conveys her opinion of pride by Mary. Pride is a very common failing; so, don’t doubt that it is universal in this book. There are several examples as follows. The first example is the pride of heroine----Elizabeth. She has free idea and independent observation, analysis and selection. Her pride is inherent. She is so proud of her judgment that she can’t understand Mr. Darcy and thinks he is pride. Then comes the second example, Mr. Darcy, he was burn in a noble family, rich and handsome. He has the nobles ense of honor and concept of hierarchy. Thus, his some behavior can’t be accepted by others. Besides the hero and heroine’s pride, author has put a lot of ink on other characters. Like Mr. Collins , who is proud of his stable property income ,relatively high social position ; Lady Catherine , who has level prejudice , proud of her blue blood and is so vain ; finally , Miss Bingley ,who is well educated , beautiful , rich and those are all her pride .Secondly, how does the author convey the prejudice? As fa r as I’mconcerned, the prejudice in this book can divides into two parts. First, the character prejudice, such as Elizabeth, whose wrong judgment between Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham leads to so many misunderstanding and barrier between her and Mr. Darcy. Second , social prejudice , which is very obvious existing on Mr. Darcy ,Mr. Collins ,Lady Catherine and Miss Bingley and so on .Pride and prejudice are closely linked in the novel; they impede the combination of E & D. And the way of E & D getting together reflects the pursuit of personality's independence and equal rights of women. It seems that the novel just talks about household affairs, but reflects the huge social problem. E’s pursuit of free and beatific marriage and her ignorance of level prejudice reflect the combat between the rising bourgeoisie and the feudal system. Besides, the novel also suggests the author's attitude to women. She criticize the gender discrimination existed in the 19th century’s British society. In addition to the above, marriage is the main line in this novel, and there are four kinds of marriages. First, the marriage between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, their marriage is based on equality and understanding each other. Second, the marriage between Jane and Mr. Bingley, their marriage is a cultured marriage, also with love. Third, the marriage between Lydia and Mr. Wickham, it is not based on respect and love, impulsive and imprudent. Fourth, the marriage between Charlotte andMr. Collins is for pecuniary exchange, for benefit rather than love. The different kinds of marriages suggest the author’s attitude towards marriage: It is wrong to marry just for property, money and status; and it is also stupid to ignore those listed above. She insists that a happy marriage should be based on love and understanding.Characters of Pride and PrejudiceThe title of the book is Pride and Prejudice, the Pride refers to the hero Mr. Darcy, and the Prejudice suggests the heroin Elizabeth. They fall in love with each other, but they don’t real ize it or we can say that they don’t want to admit it because Mr. Darcy is so elegant and pride that it gives Elizabeth a false image that the man is not worth loving, especially when Elizabeth thinks it is Mr. Darcy who takes apart her elder sister Jane and Bingley. From the title, it seems that two persons like this are unlikely to come together. But later, after witnessing the tragedy of her little sister’s marriage,Elizabeth begins to view Mr. Darcy in a more reasonable way. And also,Mr. Darcy has realized that he is too elegant and begins to change. At last, the two persons express their feelings to each other and create a legend of love. Now, let’s analyze the character of the leading roles. The heroin Elizabeth is not only the most charming figure in this book, but also themost brilliant female image. On the appearance and talent, Elizabeth is not the excellent, but she is smart, brave, intelligent and self-expect, and she is the daughter her father most proud of. She has her own views of love and marriage. The most important is that she pursues the independence of spirit and personality. In that male dominated era, it is commendable to possess such qualities.Mr. Darcy, An extremely wealthy aristocrat, Darcy is proud, haughty and extremely conscious of class differences at the beginning of the novel. He does, however, have a strong sense of honor and virtue. Elizabeth's rebukes after his first proposal to her help him to recognize his faults of pride and social prejudice. It is, in fact, precisely because Elizabeth is not so awed by his high social status as to be afraid to criticize his character that he is attracted to her. The self-knowledge acquired from Elizabeth's rebukes and the desire to win Elizabeth's love spur him to change and judge people more by their character than by their social class.Jane, Elizabeth's elder sister. She is beautiful, gentle and elegant. She is well-hearted and weak, and she is learned in books and reserved, but smart and decisive in this regard is inferior to that in younger sister Elizabeth.Bingley, he is noble and dignified, a gentleman, and a benign countenance, unaffected. He is placid, straightforward, but a little lord. The friend’s trust, are easily controlled by others.Mr. Collins, he likes to flatter, servile. He is boring and he didn't sense of love, also do not understand love, only wants to marry.Mr. Bennet, he is smart, witty and humorous, serious in speech and manner and unpredictable changed.Mrs. Bennet, she is a woman of low intelligence, knows very little, low reaction and narrow-minded. And her greatest wish is to make her daughters married, better to marry a rich man.The social status of women then and nowThe social status of women is different in different society, but what is the different between the 19th century and now? I’m very impressed in two sentences .They are “it was the only honorable provision forwell-educated young women of small fortune, and however uncertain of giving happiness, must be their pleasantest pr eservative from want.” and “When she was discontented she fancied herself nervous . The business of her life was to get her daughter married; its solace was visiting and news.” They two reveal the passive situation of women in marriages. And in patriarchal society, Women are always in a subsidiary position. So ,you may can see , the social status of women in 19th century are lower than women’s now .They were not respected like women today and they were not treated as equal as men . The core of their lives wasfamilies and they should obey their husbands. Men and women, boys and girls, however, are equal in today’s society.Writing techniquesLet me introduce the writing techniques used in the pride and prejudice. The author used a lot of conversations and contrasts. There are not so many descriptions of characters’ psychological activities, but the vivid contrasts and interesting conversations have already caught our eyes. I think the most important writing skills in the novel is irony and it has four mainly functions.Firstly, it expresses the theme. As we all know that the most famous sentence about this novel is the first sentence. “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” Through this sentence, the author uses the irony to show us that it is a story about the marriage of rich men and she combines marriage with fortune, to imply that money is the basis of marriage. In order to illustrate this kind of view, of course she shows us the example. As far as I am concerned, Charlotte’s marriage is an obvious one. She decides to marry to Mr. Collins, but her best friend Elizabeth can not understand why she wants to marry such a ridiculous man. So Charlotte explains that” I am not romantic, y ou know. I never was. I ask only a comfortable home; and considering Mr. Collins’s character, connections, and situation in life, I am convinced that my chance ofhappiness with him is as fair as most people can boast on entering the marriage state.” I thi nk her words can clearly show us at that time, most of women marry to men just due to their fortune.Secondly, irony depicts the characters. For example, Mrs. Bennet is such a typical ignorant snob. “She was a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper. When she was discounted she fancied herself nervous. The business of her life was to get her daughters married; its solace was visiting and news.” When her daughter Lydia ran away with Mr.Wicham, she was worried. But when she knew that Lydia would get married soon, she was beside herself with joy and did not care about whether Lydia would happy or not. In addition, she expresses Darcy’s pride through irony. The first time when Darcy proposes to Elizabeth, “He spoke well, but there w ere feelings besides those of the heart to be detailed, and he was not more eloquent on the subject of tenderness than of pride. His sense of her inferiority-of its being degradation-of the family obstacles which judgment had always opposed to inclination were dwelt on with warmth.” But “As he said this, Elizabeth could easily see that he had no doubt of a favorable answer. He spoke of apprehension and anxiety, but his countenance expressed real security.” From these we can see that Darcy thinks Elizabeth will accept his proposal but actually she rejected. So here the author uses irony to express the pride of Darcy and even the noble.Thirdly, it develops the plot. Still when Darcy proposes to E, she says “From the very beginning, from the first moment, I ma y almost say, of my acquaintance with you, your manners impressing me with the full belief of your arrogance, your conceit, and your selfish disdain of the feelings of others, were such as to form that groundwork of disapprobation on which succeeding events have built so immovable a dislike; and I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed on to marry.” From the words Elizabeth says, we can clearly see her prejudice to Darcy. It is an obvious irony that she said she would never married Darcy, but in the end she married to Darcy happily. Mr. Collins, a mixture of pride and obsequiousness, self-importance and humility, his marriage is very ironic. He loves Jane to start with. “Miss Bennet’ s lovely face confirmed his views, and established all his strictest notions of what was due to seniority; and for the first evening she was his settled choice.” But after Mrs.Bennet tells him Jane will engage to another man soon, he changes his mind to choo se E as his wife. “Mr.Collins had only to change from Jane to Elizabeth- and it was soon done- done while Mrs. Bennet was stirring the fire. Elizabeth, equally next to Jane in birth and beauty, succeeded her of course.” But actually, to my surprise that he marry to Charlotte at last. Besides these, we can see the author’s irony through Darcy and E’ changes. At the beginning, Darcy does not want to dancewith Elizabeth, and the he invites Elizabeth to dance with him. They hate each other and want to escape from each other, but later, they love and desire to see each other. Darcy becomes modest and Elizabeth regret for her prejudice.Lastly, it builds the frame. At the beginning, Darcy thinks that there are several disadvantages for Mr. Bennet’s daughters to find good husbands, but he and Mr. Bingley becomes Mr. Bennet’s son-in-law in the end. Lady Catherine wants Darcy to marry her daughter, so she does some dirty things between Darcy and Elizabeth. But what she did lets them have the chance to communicate with each other and facilities Elizabeth to accept Darcy’s proposal. Those “clever men” is satirized by the reality, but the “uninformed” Mrs.Bennet’s is proved to be true that “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” What can I say if it is not an excellent irony.。
Reading Report: Pride and PrejudiceI. IntroductionJane Austen is a famous British novelist in the Romantic period. She was born in the middle class of Hampshire, England. Her novels mainly describe love and marriage, and observe social issues from the unique perspective of women. When she was young, she fell in love with Tom Lefroy. But both families expect their children to marry nobles, and Austen is forced to end the relationship with his lover. After that, she was unmarried all her life, and her persistence and understanding of love are written in her novel. Because Austen, with a good family, has always lived in the feudal English countryside, her living circle is very small. Her family and living environment are the most direct source of her ideas and content, as well as part of her creative materials. But this also made her works often limited to stories about the daughters of ordinary squires falling in love and getting married, and to a certain extent, her works also reflected the conditions of British rural society at that time.Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen’ s most famous masterpiece. It vividly reflects people's views on marriage and social attitudes in the English countryside from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. The novel revolves around the marital status of the five daughters of Bennett s family. According to local law, the inheritance of family property must be inherited by her nephew Collins, so Mrs. Bennett' s greatest wish is to marry all her five daughters into a wealthy family. At the beginning of the article, the single and wealthy Bingley came to Netherfield Manor, which soon became the focus and topic of discussion among the people in the town. When Mrs. Bennett learned that Bentley was about to host a party, she was excited to discuss marriage with her daughter, and hoped that one of them could win Bingley' s heart. This party was where the protagonist and heroine met for the first time. Later, because of the misunderstanding between her sister and Bingley, Elizabeth's prejudice against Darcy became deeper. Layers of misunderstandings and contradictions brought the novel to a climax one after another. In the ending, Darcy changed his arrogance, the two resolved the misunderstanding and were happy together.II. My Comments on the BookBefore reading the original version, I had a certain understanding of the theme of the novel through watching movies. Love stories are a very common theme. There are so many love stories, why do Pride and Prejudice play an important role in the British romantic period? Through reading, I think the English version of Pride and Prejudice is relatively simple and easy to understand compared with many foreign masterpieces. It does not deliberately praise elegant and loyal love, and through the daily dialogue of each character, it creates a distinctive character in common things. The novel also vividly portrays the English country life in the 18th and 19th centuries. In addition, this novel has no extreme dramatic conflicts, nor major conflicts, but some of our human shortcomings, just like the title of the novel "Pride and Prejudice".In fact, Mrs. Bennett in the novel is the epitome of most people in society at that time. In the traditional social concept at that time, people's standard for marital happiness was not loyal love, but money. Parents believe that the child’s marriage partner should have a certainamount of money and social status. For them, love is an unreliable luxury, they only value material. Therefore, the speech and behavior towards the people in the small town in the novel fully reflects the money worship of the society at that time. Elizabeth is a very charming character, not only because of her own good qualities, wisdom, wit, courage and strong self-esteem, but also because of her avant-garde view of love. Despite the family status and the gap between rich and poor, Darcy still proposed to her several times, but Elizabeth refused. Her different attitudes towards Darcy's several marriage proposals actually reflect women' s pursuit of personality independence and equal rights. In the article, Elizabeth has always had a deep misunderstanding and prejudice against Darcy for various reasons. The most important thing is that she hates his arrogance. In fact, Darcy's arrogance is a reflection of status differences. From ancient times to the present, from East to West, class differences exist objectively. In the social background of that era, the main gap between classes was not money, but culture and ideas. In the novel, Elizabeth rejects Darcy's marriage proposal on a gloomy rainy day, and the dialogue between the two reaches an unforgettable climax. Darcy expressed his sincere opinion on the improper behavior of Elizabeth's family. He said: "It hurts me to say this, but it is because your mother, your three sisters, and sometimes your father is not polite. Please forgive me." Elizabeth couldn't bear this kind of criticizing her from a moral high point. The behavior of family members, even if they may not be perfect. Class inequality prevents Darcy from accurately understanding the behavior of the Bennett family. Money worship is actually just a normal weakness of human beings, no one can be perfect. Apart from these shortcomings of human nature, Elizabeth's parents are only thinking about the future of their daughter. A marriage that only considers material things is unhappy, but a marriage without material foundation is sad.Although this novel was written in the early 19th century, the concepts of love and marriage expounded by Jane Austen are still hot topics in China today. From the concept of marriage advocated in the novel, we can think of the current state of marriage in contemporary society. The divorce rate is rising every year, and more and more people are afraid of marriage and believe that marriage is the grave of love. Although this view is unilateral, I think it is not unreasonable, and there are certain practical factors. In fact, not so many women can, like Elizabeth, see through the nature of sweet talk and discover that there are places where both men and women are not suitable to continue. Every year, popular searches on Weibo show some cases of wife murder and domestic violence. Due to various family factors, the husband and wife have unresolved conflicts, which leads to an astonishing tragedy. In recent years, a new policy has been introduced, called the divorce cooling-off period, which has aroused widespread discussion. Why not advocate a positive view of marriage in the first place? Let everyone seriously consider before getting married, rather than when considering divorce, let the traumatized family calm down and continue the tragic marriage with the pain. All in all, I admire Jane Austen’ s view of marriage, and I also agree with her views on love and marriage. In contemporary China, although class differences are not so obvious, the gap between the rich and the poor is still very large. Families of equal standing is the most direct embodiment of the contemporary concept of marriage. Marriage is not a matter of two people, but a matter of two families. Love is the most important element of marriage, and conformity with the world outlook, values, and outlook on life is an important factor for a good marriage to last.。
A Book Report of the Pride And PrejudiceThe pride and Prejudice is a novel written by Jane Austen, original version, and published by Central Compilation and Translation Press in 2012. The story is set the eye of early 19th century in a reserved England countryside. The gist of this story is as follow: one of five daughters of the Bennets, Elizabeth Bennet, who is not only a beautiful creature, but a humorous, rational person as well. When the other girls are busy to find them a husband, Elizabeth is just rational enough as usual, for being herself. Actually, she is deeply admired by a well-possessed gentleman—Mr. Darcy. Although their first meet has no joy because of Darcy’s pride manner, Elizabeth’s prejudice to Darcy gradually disappears which is due to their ardent love. And finally, they get through every barrier between them such as their social class discrepancy and are married happily. Meanwhile, the marriages of other sisters and friends of Elizabeth’s form a great contrast to hers. And nearly all the people in the story live in happiness in the end. This is one of the most remarkable novels as I’ve ever seen, and I enjoy myself in reading it every time. The whole story is attractively humorous and philosophical. And it seems like that, Elizabeth and charlotte, these two characters with their good wits, are the representatives of Jane herself. Once, Jane shows her views on marriage by charlotte:“ It is better to know as little as possible of the defects of the people with whom you are to pass your life.” As we all known that Jane has never been married, that is not mean that she lack of experience of being in a relationship with someone. Her sentimental but rational heart and also her observant eyes adding to her quick mind and then comes out this wise utterance. In my minds, Sometimes she would look like a taciturn “Darcy”, standing among the ladies and gentlemen at parties, watching and listening carefully, and then she said:“There is meanness in all the arts which ladies sometimes condescend to employ for captivation whatever bears affinity to cunning is despicable.”I stand on the point of female literature evolution, trying to find an answer to her voices. Admittedly, Jane Austen is a pioneer of this evolution. She read and learned all by herself, struggling for emancipating that social which thought that women were intellectually inferior to men and had no need to be educated. According to Virginia Woolf, Jane even hadn’t got her own study room for writing. It is hard to imagine that a female writer, sitting in a noise public room, writing a masterpiece like this book. And all of a sudden, I experienced her struggling and accusing of upon this society by hearing what Elizabeth said:” The more I see this world, the more am I unsatisfied with it.” And this is only for equality, for human rights, for being herself. In modern society, there are big changes in marriage, women professions, and social status ect. But what we should learn from Jane and her work Pride and Prejudice is that—Never give up on your hope, never forget who you are, never stop fighting for your right and let wisdom fill your head, let observant eyes help you to scope and to think.。
A Book Report on Pride and PrejudiceJane Austen was born into a Middle-class family in 1775. She was the seventh child of Rev.George Austen, rector of Steventon. With her sisters she was educated at home, and passed her life very quietly, cheerfully, in the doing of small domestic duties. She began to write at an early age. Walter Scott was her admirer until her early death; but these two, the greatest writers of fiction in their age ,were never brought together. Jane Austen never married on the whole life. She died, quietly as she had lived, at Winchester, in 1817,and was buried in the cathedral. She was a bright, attractive little women, whose sunny qualities are unconsciously reflected in all her books. Jane Austen completed six novels, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma. Each is perfect, and there is no choosing between them for one who enjoys her quiet irony and her simple delicate analysis of character. She was the founder of the novel which deals with unimportant middle-class people and of which there are many fine examples in later English fiction. Her style is easy and effortless, a perfect example of what De Quincey meant when he said that we should have to turn to the prose of the cultivated gentlewoman for English uncorrupted by the slang and cant of the world. The main idea of chapter one and two of Pride and Prejudice is as follows. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of good fortune must be in want of a wife. At such a situation, a kind of people like Mrs.Bennet appeared. The chief business of Mrs.Bennet’s life was to find suitable husbands for her five daughters. When a single gentleman with a large fortune by the name of Bingley moves into a mansion called Netherfield Park, the news quickly spreads through the neighborhood via gossipy women. In order that one of their daughters can marry such a rich young man, Mrs.Bennet begsher husband to visit Mr.Bingley. While Mr.Bennet was so odd a person, sarcastic humor, reserve ,and caprice, that Mrs.Bennet so speechless and complaining. In fact, Mr.Bennet is the first one of that area to visit Mr.Bingley without telling Mrs.Bennet. Finally, Mrs.Bennet and her daughters know that. The following thing that girls are going to do is preparing for the ball with Mr.Bingley.Just from the two chapter, I can conclude that Mrs.Bennet is frivolous, excitable, and narrow-minded, and she imagines herself susceptible to attacks of tremors and palpitations. Though all what she had done just for her daughters, including instigating her daughters to marry rich men, I really do not like her way. Instead, I have a good impression on Mr.Bennet. He has a sarcastic, cynical sense of humour that he purposefully uses to irritate his wife. He loves his daughters (Elizabeth in particular), too.But he does not do as his wife. Comparatively, he is much more reason. From this we can see, marriage at that time of England just like a deal. They pay much attention to a man’s possession but his quality.。
prideandprejudice傲慢与偏见读后感(推荐五篇)第一篇:pride and prejudice傲慢与偏见读后感Book Report onPride and PrejudiceThe author of Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen. She was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. She was born into a Middle-class family and her father was a rector.Although she was not formally educated, she received a broader education than most women of that time.As a novelist, she was apt at describing marriage life, able to skillfully use irony, and created lots of unique female characters with independent thought and personalities.Although she never got married throughout her life, she was yearning for a marriage based on true live.Once she told to her niece:“Not to think of accepting him unless you really do like him.Anything is to be preferred or endured rather than marrying without affection”.The themes of Jane Austen’s works are always love, Pride and Prejudice is no exception.Love seems to be a perpetual theme of literature all over the world. But actually what is love? For most girls in their 20s, love is what they eagerly look forward to and yearn for. They chase love bravely no matter what difficulties they may be faced with. They assume that love is pure or even holy, perhaps it is just quite the other way around. In real life, it is disputable that love is always bound up with many other factors, such as property and social status.People tend to find a balance between love and property.Pride and Prejudice is one of the representative works of Jane Austen. It is also an essential classic of world literature.I still remember the first sentence of the book “It is u niversally acknowledged that a single man inpossession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”Which indicates that marriage at that time is based more on possession than on emotion. In this book, the writer represented the love stories between several young men and young girls who were from different social status.Through the discussion of the different marriages and love, the writer demonstrated her concept about love and marriage: love and marriage was closely associated with property and position, however, love and marriage could not only be decided by the property and social status. An ideal marriage should be based on mutual affection, respect and the same interest. She objected to mercenary marriages and the attitude of regarding marriage as trifling things. The story took place in the class-conscious England of the late 18th century. The five Bennet sisters: including Jane, who was simple, innocent and never speaks evil of others;Elizabeth, a clever and strong-willed girl, who bid defiance to the marriage without love;Mary, reading books all day round, who was actually a pedant;besides, shallow-pated Kitty and Lidia, who followed exotic things, handsome men. Also, their father, Mr.Bennet being a wise and witty gentleman;while their mother, Mrs.Bennet was permanently distracted by the issue of marrying off her daughters at any cost.In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen actually showed us several different views on love and marriage by depicting five marriages in her rational and humorous writing tone.Firstly, Jane and Bingley, who were considered as the happiest couple.Their marriage was out of aesthetic love which met people's expectation best.Mr.Bingley, who was good looking and gentlemanlike, with a pleasant countenance and easy, unaffected manners, was the one every woman wanted to make themselves acquainted with. But he fell in love with Jane at a ballat the first sight.Although the sister of Bingley strongly opposed to their marriage because of the distinct difference between their family background and social status, they finally overcame difficulties and made it.On the contrary, there was also mercenary marriage based on pecuniary benefit rather than true love in this book.Charlotte, a friend of Elizabeth, who thought herself neither a beautiful nor a rich girl, chose to marry stupid and shallow Collins out of economic considerations. In her mind, if there was no love, living a rich life was the best choice, which was an authentic depiction for the majority people at that time.Besides, there were other miserable marriages in this book.Elizabeth's sister, Lydia, as well as her father's marriage, was unfortunate.Lydia, being confused by the beauty of appearance, while ignoring the moral character, became fascinate with Wickham, who was vile and rotten deep in his heart out of temporary impulse, and finally eloped with Wickham.Mr.Bennet's marriage was also a miserable one, it is incredible that they got married and lived together so many years without love. Then came to Mr.Darcy and Elizabeth, who were the hero and heroine in this book.Their story also explained why this book was called pride and prejudice.Mr.Darcy, a single proud man of a large fortune, was soon drew the attention of the room by his fine, tall person, handsome features and noble mien when he accompanied Bingley to the ball.Although many girls wanted to acquainted themselves with Mr.Darcy, his arrogance and apathy made them keep away.Elizabeth had seen it all and as anyone else believed he was haughty and stubborn, thus grew disgust and prejudice toward him.Although Mr.Darcy didn't have a crush on Elizabeth at the first sight, he gradually found himself fall in love with her for her wisdom and straightforward manner. But outof his pride, the more he loved Elizabeth, the least he would show on the surface instead of making apathy, which made Elizabeth prejudiced against Darcy deeper and deeper. As Darcy more loved Elizabeth, he finally was unable to restrain to show his love to Elizabeth. As Darcy said:"In vain have I struggled. It will not do.My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”However, to his surprise, his showing of true feelings which he had struggled for a long time met with Elizabeth's firm refusal. His arrogance had suffered a blow. But from then on, Mr.Darcy began to reflect on the self-examination and treated people with more populist, and they began to candid exchange. After a long-term observation of his behaviors, Elizabeth's misunderstandings and prejudice toward Mr.Darcy gradually eliminated.Afterwards, inadvertently knowing that Darcy properly handled her sister Lydia and Wickham's elopement, Elizabeth's attitude changed.Darcy was not arrogant as others thought. Finally, regardless of his aunt's strong objection and concept of family, Darcy proposed to Elizabeth again.Elizabeth willingly consented.Through the five stories, we can actually grasp the truth of marriage: love.Marriage should be based on love, while it can’t have access to happiness when just based on money or appearance. And a deeper knowledge is needed when we start our affection.Just like in this book, Elizabeth stereotyped Mr.Darcy a very proud man who seemed to always feel superior on first impression. Thus she hated him and avoided him, which widened the chasm of misunderstanding. But after deep looking toward him, she finally overcame prejudice and accepted his proposal.Which indicates that in a relationship, only exclude vanity and prejudice, and think about each other’s moral character objectively, can we knoweach other better and more exact—only good moral character deserves real love.In our modern society, with the concept of “ money makes a mare to go” having rooted in many people’s mind, they are gradually accustomed to weighing everything they encounter;if they will benefit from it, how to achieve maximum benefits, including love. Thus, Being engagedto someone from a rich and powerful family becomesmany women’s dream. They would rather lead to an ensured but dull marriage life.As far as I am concerned, I am firmly convinced that marriage without love is unimaginable;those who are willing to give up pursuing love for the sake of a life of abundance are foolish and hopeless.Besides, in reality, we can’t simply judge one by appearance or first impression.Glossy and gentle though someone appears to be, underneath that façade hides a nasty and rotten mind, just like Mr.Wickham in this book;also, a seemed proud and pretentious man may be possess a tender and virtuous personality, just like Mr.Darcy.Thus we must get along with a person and insight into him or her, only in this way won’ t we miss the one and the true love due to some unlocked misunderstandings or prejudice. All in all, we must be for love alignment in the face of marriage;and we must be subject to moral character in the face of love;and we must be objective and fair in the face of judging the moral character.第二篇:傲慢与偏见读后感[模版]《傲慢与偏见》读后感摘要:简〃奥斯汀的作品《傲慢与偏见》中围绕班奈特家五个女儿待嫁为中心,进而展开的一段四队情侣的爱情故事。
Book report of pride and prejudice李晓鹏‘It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.’This is the first sentence of Pride and prejudice, a love novel, which contains one of the most cherished and classical love stories in English literature. Jane Austen, the author of pride and prejudice, is the unique writer of England between eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, I think. The first sentence of pride and prejudice implies the themes, or key words: love, marriage, money. Every one has his or her opinion of these three words. Jane Austen expresses hers in pride and prejudice: love is the only basis of marriage but it’s stupid to ignore the role of money in the marriage, as well. The news that a rich young gentleman called Charles Bingley has rented the manor of Netherfield Park causes intensive reactions in the nearby village of Bongbourn, especially in the Bennets, who have five unmarried daughters—Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia, from oldest to youngest. Mr. Bennet has paid a visit to Mr. Bingley without inform Mrs. Bennet and Miss Bennets. As for Mrs. Bennet, her five daughters’ marriages are her life career. Here is an opportunity for Mrs. Bennet to help his daughters to make a friendwith Mrs. Bingley. Mr. Bennet take his five daughters to attend a big ball, where Bingley and his close friend Darcy are also there. Bingley falls in love with Jane at first sight, and spends much of the evening dancing with her, while his fried Darcy is less interested with dancing and refuses to dance with Elizabeth ,which makes everyone view him as a pride and arrogant guy. Maybe Elizabeth’s prejudice against Dacry has existed at this moment. However, Darcy is attracted to Elizabeth’s charm and intelligence, gradually in the following social activities. Jane is invited to Bingley’s mansion. On her journey to the house she is caught in a downpour and catches ill, forcing her to stay ant Netherfield for several days. Elizabeth walks through muddy fields and arrives with a spattered dress to bingley’s mansion to attend Jane. The snobbish Miss bingley, Charles Bingley’s sister, laugh at Elizabeth, because of her higher status. Nevertheless, her jealousy boosts when she notices that darcy is paying quite a lot of attention to Elizabeth. When Elizabeth and Jane return home, they find Mr .Collins visiting their family, who is a young but pompous fool, but will inherit Mr. Bennet’s property. Shortly after his arrival, he makes a proposal to Elizabeth. She turned him down, hurting his pride. Meanwhile, the Bennet girls have become friendly with militia officers stationed in a nearby town. Wickham is a handsome young soldier who is friendlywith Elizabeth and tells her how Darcy cruelly cheated him out of an inheritance. At the beginning of winter, the Bingleys and Darcy leave Netherfield and return to London, much to Jane’s disappointment. And Collins has married Charlotte, Elizabeth’s best friend. Jane goes to London in the hope of a Bingley’s visit. But the results go contrary to her expectations that Miss Bingley treats her rudely and Bingley fails to visit her at all. That spring, Elizabeth visits charlotte, who live near the home of Mr.Collins’ patron Lady Catherine de Bourgh, who is also Darcy’s aunt. Darcy calls on Catherine and encounters Elizabeth, and Darcy has paid many visits to Collins’s home. One day, he makes a shocking proposal to Elizabeth, but she quickly refuses. Elizabeth still considers him arrogant and pride. And her prejudice against him is more stubborn. Darcy leaves her and shortly delivered a long letter to Elizabeth,he admits that he urged Bingley to distance himself from Jane ,but claims that he did so only because he thought their romance was not serious. As for Wickham, he explains to Elizabeth that the young solider is a liar and the real cause of disagreement between Wckham and him is that Wickham attempted to elope with his young sister, Georgianna Darcy, only fifteen years old. This letter makes Elizabeth reevaluate Darcy. She returns home treat Wickham coldly. The militia is leaving town, which makes the younger Bennets crazy and nervous. The summer comes and Elizabeth begins a trip and the trip takes her to the neighborhood of Pemperley, Darcy’s estate. When she is sure that darcy is not at his estate, Elizabeth decided to visit the splendid building and grouds. Suddenly, Darcy arrives and behave very friendly to her. Making no attention of his proposal, he introduces his young sister to Elizabeth and invites Elizabeth to his estate. However, a letter came that Lydia has eloped with Wickham and the two is nowhere to be found, which suggests that they may be living together out of wedlock. Mr .bennet and Mr. Gardiner go off to find them, but soon Mr.Bennet returns home empty-hand. Just all hope seems lost , a letter comes from Mr. gardiner saying that the couple has been found and that Wickham has agreed to marry Lydia. But Elizabeth learns that it is only because of Darcy’s help. Wickham and Lydia return to Longbourn where Mr. Bennet treats them coldly. Soon Bingley and Darcy also returned there, and Dingley proposes to Jane and she accepts, and Darcy makes no mention of his desire to marry Elizabeth. Meanwhile, Lady Catherine de Bourgh pays a visit to Longbourn. She corners Elizabeth and forces her to promise that she will never marry Darcy.Of course, Elizabeth will not promise anything against her own happiness. A little later, Darcy and Elizabeth go out walking together and he tells her that his feelings have never changed at al since the spring’s proposal. She tenderly accepts his proposal finally and both Jane and Elizabeth find their own happiness. Surely Elizabeth and Darcy are the novel’s protagonists. Elizabeth is the most intelligent and sensible of the five Bennet sisters. I admire her actually, and to tell the truth I hope I can have a girlfriend just like Elizabeth. However, her sharp tongue and tendency to make hasty judgments often make her astray. Darcy , a young handsome young gentleman whose status is higher than Elizabeth, tends to look down upon others including Elizabeth at first, which leads to Elizabeth’s prejudice against him. But his honesty, generosity and kindness to help others is uncomparable advantages to Wickham.Surely enough, pride and prejudice shows the power of love and happiness to overcome class or status boundaries and prejudices. Jane Austen is a real great writer, which describes what is love and how people love carefully. I learn from this classical novel that love can be captured only by getting rid of pride and prejudice in your heart.Very good!Pride and Prejudice is also one of my favorite novels. I really cannot relate this author, a young lady who never gets married all through her short life, to the sophistication she displays in writing this novel. And the theme of this novel still applies to the modern society. Pride and prejudice is everywhere in the world, and it seems not that easy to get rid of.。
