When we were young, we had dreams and expectations. We imagined things and we kept thinking about what we wanted to be, what we wanted to do, what made us proud and happy and what we would become.

We grew up, and things seemed like having its own way. We accepted our success or failure and we moved on. The rapid change, the need to do the urgent things, the work, the pressures and the failure all killed part of our visions.

Things have changed, but they cannot really take away the dreams. We still have to dream, to visualize(想象) our desires, our visions of the future, even when we are considered to be too old for such things.

Cornel Sanders started his business when he was sixty, and started the whole successful KFC business. The main thing is not the age —whether it is too old, or too young, but it is the desire to dream on, and the courage to realize it.

Vivid(清晰的) visualization, taking it to sleep, thinking constantly about it, talking about it, planning for it and adding all the spices to our dreams will all bring us a bit closer to the realization of our dreams.

The ability to dream is one of the fine qualities of human race that other species do not possess. So dream on, and put a deadline: make it a giant dream, a tiny one, an old everlasting one, a newfound one, a hobby related one, or just whatever ... just continue to dream ... Then, just go and do it!

There was a small boy living on a farm which seemed so far away from everywhere. He needed to get up before sunrise every morning to start his chores.

During sunrise he would take a break and climb up the fence so that he could see the house with golden windows in the distance. He thought how great it would be to live there and his mind would wander, imagining the modern equipment and appliances(器具)that might exist in the house. "If they could afford golden windows, then there must be other nice things. “He then promised himself, "Some day I will go there and see this wonderful place."

Then one morning his father told him to stay at home and his father would do the chores. Knowing that this was his chance, he packed a sandwich and headed across the field towards the house with the golden windows.

As time went on, he began to realize how he misjudged the distance and

something else was very wrong. As he approached the house, he didn’t see any golden windows but instead, he saw an old house with a broken-down fence. He went to the tattered(破烂的)screen door and knocked. A small boy very close to his age opened the door.

He asked the boy if he had seen the house with the golden windows. The boy said, "Sure, I know.” And the boy invited him to sit on the porch(走廊). As he sat there, he looked back from where he had just come. The sunset turned the windows of his own house golden.

James Bender, in his book How to Talk Well relates the story of a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won a blueribbon One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it.

The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. "How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they also enter the competition each year?" the reporter asked.

"Why didn’t you know, sir?" said the farmer. "The wind picks up pollen(花粉)from the ripening(成熟的)corn and carries it from field to field. If my neighbors grow bad corn, cross-pollination(异花授粉)will steadily lower the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn."

He is very much aw are of the connection of life. His corn can’t improve unless his neighbor’s corn also improves.

So it is in other aspects. Those who choose to be at peace must help their neighbors to be at peace. Those who choose to live well must help others live well, for the value of life is measured by the lives it touches. And those who choose to be happy must help others find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all.

The lesson for each of us is this: if we are to grow good corn, we must help our neighbors grow good corn.

I remember a day when I was a little kid. I was making a sandwich in the kitchen when I noticed the date on one of the wine bottles...

"Dad, Dad!" I cried. "This wine is too old to drink."

"Son, hold on," he said.

"No, you can’t drink this tonight! This bottle of wine was made 10 years ago."

"Wait; let me tell you ..."

"Would you like me to throw it away for you?" I asked.

"Son, wait a second," he said. "Son, some wines get better over time. The longer you wait to drink it, the better it will be. Although this may seem strange, it is true."

When I was young, I didn’t have any understanding of what this meant, but now, this would have been very helpful to remember as I went through my teenage years.

In our society, we forget this simple rule: The longer you wait for certain things, the better they will be. But we want the best job as quickly as possible; we want to graduate from college in as few years as possible; we even speed through our homework just to chat with friends. When we do this, we lose something of great importance.

We all want to get to the next step so quickly that perhaps we don’t get re ady enough to get there. This has a negative effect (负面影响) on our society. When trying to go to the right college, we will do anything to get in and when we rush through our homework, we may not study enough for the test, and end up failing. We need to be ready for whatever comes, ready for the unexpected. Just as wine gets better over time, so do the things in our paths.

I have determined that I am living in a television sitcom(情景喜剧). It started back in November whe n my wife’s sister and her husband sold their house. They have been building a nice new home. They quickly sold their former house, but this meant they would be without a home for nearly three months. So my wife offered to let them move in with us for a few months.

Thus, my wife’s sister and her husband have become our house-guests. Of course, most of my friends didn’t think this was a good thing at the beginning, but I was cheerfully confident. I like my wife’s sister, her husband and their daughters, who are cute. We all get along pretty well. My wife and her sister have always been best friends even when my life becomes a sitcom with the total chaos(混乱), because we have eight people and an insolent(傲慢的) cat living under one roof.

My house used to be a fairly quiet place. It was nice to come home after work, take my shoes off and enjoy a relaxing dinner with the family. Now it becomes a

day-care center and an amusement park. We call the period between 8 pm and 9 pm, when the kids make beds for the night, "Happy Hour".

My kitchen has become a 24-hour dining-room. With four adults, two youngsters, two babies and the cat, there are always dirty dishes and something cooking on the stove. Sometimes we have one large dinner together when our schedules allow. Other times, my guests may serve one dinner, me another when I get home, and my wife a third dinner when she arrives home. By the time the third dinner of the evening is served, it’s time to prepare bedtime snacks. The basic rule is, "If you d on’t help cook it, you don’t help eat it."

Just like in a sitcom, my wife and I usually end the day giggling(哈哈大笑) about the interesting things that occur during a "normal" day, like babies chasing the cat through the kitchen, or the cat running after babies through the kitchen. I’ve never had a sister, but now I can honestly say that my wife’s sister is mine.

87 Every day is a lucky day I teach economics at UNLV three times per week. Last Monday, at the beginning of class, I cheerfully asked my students how their weekend had been. One young man said that his weekend had not been so good. He had his wisdom teeth removed. The young man then proceeded to ask me why I always seemed to be so cheerful. His question reminded me of something I'd read somewhere before: "Every morning when you get up, you have a choice about how you want to approach life that day," I said. "I choose to be cheerful." "Let me give you an example," I continued, addressing all sixty students in the class. "In addition to teaching here at UNLV, I also teach out at the community college in Henderson, 17 miles down the freeway from where I live. One day a few weeks ago I drove those 17 miles to Henderson. I exited the freeway and turned onto College Drive. I only had to drive another quarter mile down the road to the college. But just then my car died. I tried to start it again, but the engine wouldn't turn over. So I put my flashers on, grabbed my books, and marched down the road to the college." "As soon as I got there I called AAA and arranged for a tow truck to meet me at my car after class. The secretary in the Provost's office asked me what has happened. 'This is my lucky day,' I replied, smiling." " 'Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day?' She was puzzled. 'What do you mean?'" " 'I live 17 miles from here.' I replied. 'My car could have broken down anywhere along the freeway. It didn't. Instead, it broke down in the perfect place: off the freeway, within walking distance of here. I'm still able to teach my class, and I've been able to arrange for the tow truck to meet me after class. If my car was meant to break down today, it couldn't have been arranged in a more convenient fashion.'" "The secretary's eyes opened wide, and then she smiled. I smiled back and headed for class." So ended my story. I scanned the sixty faces in my economics class at UNLV. Despite the early hour, no one seemed to be asleep. Somehow, my story had touched them. Or maybe it wasn't the story at all. In fact, it had all started with a student's observation that I was cheerful.

The American Revolution represents the link between the seventeenth century, in which modern England became conscious of itself, and the awakening of modern Europe at the end of the eighteenth century. It may seem strange that the march of history should have had to cross the Atlantic Ocean, but only in the North American colonies could a struggle for civic liberty lead also to the foundation of a new nation. Here, in the popular rising against a "tyrannical" government, the fruits were more than the securing of a freer constitution. They included the growth of a nation born in liberty by the will of the people, not from the roots of common descent, a geographic entity, or the ambitions of king or dynasty.

As a teenager,I felt I was always letting people down. I was rebellious out-side,but I wanted to be liked inside. Once I left home to hitch-hike2 to California with my friend Penelope. The trip wasn?t easy, and there were many times I didn?t feel safe. One situation in particular kept me grateful to still be alive. When I returned home,I was different, not so outwardly sure of myself. I was happy to be home. But then I noticed that Penelope, who was staying with us,was wearing my clothes. And my family seemed to like her better than me. I wondered if I would be missed if I weren?t there. I told my mom,and she explained that though Penelope was a lovely girl,no one could replace me. I pointed out,“She is more patient and is neater than I have ever been.”My mom said these were wonderful qualities, but I was the only person who could fill my role. She made me realize that even with my faults—and there were many-I was a loved member of the family who couldn?t be replaced. I became a searcher, wanting to find out who I was and what made me unique. My view of myself was changing. I wanted a solid base to start from. I started to resist3 pressure to act in ways that I didn?t like any more, and I was delighted by who I really was. I came to feel much more sure that no one can ever take my place. Each of us holds a unique place in the world. You are special,no matter what others say or what you may think. So forget about being replaced. You can’t be. If you put a buzzard1) in a pen2) six to eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. .

It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress. It always receives us with the same kindness; amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting and consoling us in age. Men often discover their affinity to each other by the mutual love they have for a book just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both entertain for a third. But not until the very critical moment will we realize our potential tolerating ability. There was a woman in the countryside who got married at the age of 18 and had to escape with her two daughters and a son wherever she could at the age of 26 due to the Japanese army’s invasion. Many people in the village at that time could not bear the suffering of being a fugitive and wanted to commit suicide. After she knew about it, she would come to those people and soothed them by saying, “Don’t do that silly thing. There are no such setbacks that we could not overcome. The Japanese armies are bound to be foiled one day!” Finally she insisted until the day when all the Japanese armies were kicked out of China. Nonetheless, her son died of disease without sufficient medicine and nutrition in those days of hardships. Her husband, after knowing the death of his son, lay in bed for two days without eating and drinking anything. She teared to her husband and said, “We have a tough destiny, but however tough our lives will be, we should also persist. Though our son has passed away, we can have another. There are no such setbacks that we could not overcome.” After giving birth to the second son, her husband died of edema, which almost blew her away. But eventually, she recovered and cuddled the three young children, saying, “My sweet hearts, don’t feel scared. You still have me, your dear mum!” It took her painstaking efforts to raise her children up and the life of her family was getting better and better. Two daughters were married and so was his son
