It is his second, following his bestselling 2003 debut, The Kite Runner. Mariam is an illegitimate child, and suffers from both the stigma surrounding her birth along with the abuse she faces throughout her marriage. Laila, born a generation later, is comparatively privileged during her youth until their lives intersect and she is also forced to accept a marriage proposal from Rasheed, Mariam's husband. The author Hosseini has remarked that he regards the novel as a "mother-daughter story" in contrast to The Kite Runner, which he considers a "father-son story".It continues some of the themes used in his previous work, such as the familial aspects, but focuses primarily on female characters and their roles in Afghan society. The Author &BackgroundKhaled Hosseini ( born March 4, 1965) is an Afghan-born American novelist and physician. After graduating from college, he worked as a doctor in California, an occupation that he likened to "an arranged marriage". He has published three novels, most notably his 2003 debut The Kite Runner, all of which are at least partially set in Afghanistan and feature an Afghan as the protagonist. Following the success of The Kite Runner he retired from medicine to write full-time. Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. His father worked as a diplomat, and when Hosseini was 11 years old, the family moved to France; four years later, they applied for asylum in the United States, where he later became a citizen. Hosseini did notreturn to Afghanistan until 2001 at the age of 36, where he "felt like a tourist in hisown country".Hosseini visited Afghanistan in 2003, and "heard so many stories about what happened to women, the tragedies that they had endured, the difficulties, the gender-based violence that they had suffered, the discrimination, the being barred from active life during the Taliban, having their movement restricted, being banned essentially from practicing their legal, social rights, political rights".This motivated him to write a novel centered on two Afghan women.TitleThe title of the book comes from a line in the Josephine Davis translation of the poem "Kabul", by the 17th-century Iranian poet Saib Tabrizi:"Every street of Kabul is enthralling to the eyeThrough the bazaars, caravans of Egypt passOne could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs And the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls"In an interview, Khaled Hosseini explains, "I was searching for English translations of poems about Kabul, for use in a scene where a character bemoans leaving his beloved city, when I found this particular verse. I realized that I had found not only the right line for the scene, but also an evocative title in the phrase 'a thousand splendid suns,' which appears in the next-to-last stanza."SummaryThe novel centers around two women, Mariam and Laila, how their lives become intertwined after a series of drastic events, andtheir subsequent friendship and support for each other in the backdrop of Kabul in the 20th and 21st century. It is split into four parts that focus on individual stories: Part one is about Mariam, part two is on Laila, part three is on the relationship between the two women, and Laila's life with Tariq is in part four. The last section also happens to be the only part written in the present tense.Mariam lives in a kolba on the outskirts of Herat with her embittered mother. Jalil, her father, is a wealthy businessman who owns a cinema and lives in the town with three wives and nine children. Mariam is his illegitimate daughter, and she is prohibited to live with them, but Jalil visits her every Thursday. On her fifteenth birthday, Mariam wants her father to take her to see Pinocchio at his movie theater, against the pleas of her mother. When he does not show up, she hikes into town and goes to his house. He refuses to see her, and she ends up sleeping on the street. In the morning, Mariam returns home to find that her mother has committed suicide out of fear that her daughter had deserted her. Mariam is then taken to live in her father's house. Jalil arranges for her to be married to Rasheed, a shoemaker from Kabul who isthirty-years her senior. In Kabul, Mariam becomes pregnant seven successive times, but is never able to carry a child to term. This is a sad, disquieting reality for both Rasheed and Mariam. Ultimately Rasheed grows more and more despondent over his wife's inability to have a child and particularly a son. As their marriage wears on Rasheed gradually becomes more and more abusive.Part Two introduces Laila. She is a girl growing up in Kabul who is close friends with Tariq, a boy living in her neighborhood. They eventually develop a romantic relationship despite being aware of the social boundaries between men and women in Afghan society. War comes to Afghanistan, and Kabul is bombarded by rocket attacks. Tariq's family decides to leave the city, and the emotional farewell between Laila and Tariq culminates with them making love. Laila's family also decides to leave Kabul, but as they are packing a rocket destroys the house, killing her parents and severely injuring Laila. Laila is subsequently taken in by Rasheed and Mariam. After recovering from her injuries, Laila discovers that she is pregnant with Tariq's child. After being informed by Abdul Sharif that Tariq has died, she agrees to marry Rasheed, a man eager to have a young and attractive second wife in hopes of having a son with her. When Laila gives birth to a daughter, Aziza, Rasheed is displeased and suspicious. This results in him becoming abusive towards Laila. Mariam and Laila eventually become confidants and best friends. They plan to run away from Rasheed and leave Kabul but are caught at the bus station. Rasheed beats them and deprives them of water for several days, almost killing Aziza.A few years later, Laila gives birth to Zalmai, Rasheed's son. The Taliban has risen to power and imposed harsh rules on the Afghan population, prohibiting women from appearing in public without a male relative. There is a drought, and living conditions in Kabul become poor. Rasheed's workshop burns down, and he is forced to take jobs for which he is ill-suited. He sends Aziza to an orphanage. Laila endures a number of beatings from the Taliban when caught alone on the streets in attempts to visit her daughter. Then one day Tariq appears outside the house, and he and Laila are reunited. Laila realizes that Rasheed had hired AbdulSharif to inform her about Tariq's fake death, so that he could marry her. When Rasheed returns home from work, Zalmai tells his father about the visitor. Rasheed starts to savagely beat Laila. He nearly strangles her, but Mariam intervenes and kills Rasheed with a shovel. Afterwards, Mariam confesses to killing Rasheed in order to draw attention away from Laila and Tariq. Mariam is publicly executed, allowing Laila and Tariq to leave for Pakistan with Aziza and Zalmai. They spend their days working at a guest house in Murree, a summer retreat. After the fall of the Taliban, Laila and Tariq return to Afghanistan. They stop in the village where Mariam was raised, and discover a package that Mariam's father left behind for her: a videotape of Pinocchio, a small sack of money, and a letter. Laila reads the letter and discovers that Jalil had regretted sending Mariam away. Laila and。

He had an innate love for the sea and for travel and adventure when he was a child. Later, he devoted himself to literature and wrote several scientific romances, which gained him the name—Father of Modern Science Fiction.V erne’s novels are usually full of scientific facts and details and they pleased the public fascinated by all the scientific developments of the nineteenth century. They foretell with uncanny accuracy the inventions and advanced technology of the twentieth century, and have become the literary stepping-stone for generations of science fiction writers. After that, A trip to the Moon (1865), 20,000Leagues Under the Sea (1870), and The Mysterious Island(1875), were turned out one after another and they brought V erne worldwide popularity.V erne’s heroes are always those who risk their lives for scientific research and progress, and they have a great influence on the readers. For the first time, people began to believe that journeys into space or under the sea might really be possible. Many even tried to bring that day nearer by their own efforts. Jules V erne inspired a whole generation of scientists and he probably traveled more widely in his imagination than any other writer. This we can see quite clearly in Around the World in Eighty Days (1873).This is a book of science fiction which tells us an exciting story about an English gentleman, Mr. Phileas Fogg, who makes a bet with his club-mates and manages to travel around the world in eighty days. It gives us a vivid description of the many difficulties and incidents which happen on his journey. Mr. Fogg and his servant Passepartout start their journey from London and travel eastward. Mr. Fox, a detective, who is investigating a bank robbery case, suspects Mr. Fogg of being the robber and follows him all through the journey in an attempt to arrest him as soon as he gets the warrant. So Mr. Fogg, a man with courage and intelligence, tries to deal with all the troubles caused by Mr. Fox, and in the meantime, manages to overcome the difficulties on his way, such asmissing a train or a steamboat, being caught in a storm on the sea, attacks by the Indians, etc. With the help of his servant, Mr. Fogg saves an Indian woman Aouda, who would otherwise become a victim of the “Suttee”. The story ends happily with Mr. Fogg winning the bet and his marriage with Aouda. From this story, we can see the author’s deep love for the sea, travel and adventure, which played and important role in his life. We are also astonished and convinced by his fertile imagination and scientific and geographical knowledge. The story is so well-knit and fascination that the reader cannot put down the book before he finishes reading it. Though the book is full of scientific facts and details, the reader does not feel bored or confused at all, for in it profound truths are explained in simple language with accuracy and clarity. By reading his novels, the reader can both enjoy himself and obtain knowledge. And that is why, perhaps, that V erne’s novels have won great popularity all over the world ever since they were published.文案编辑词条B 添加义项?文案,原指放书的桌子,后来指在桌子上写字的人。

Laila is pregnant with her third child, and if it is a girl, Laila has already named her Mariam.CommentsAfter reading the novel,I am deeply touched and shocked.I am touched by the patience and suffering of Mariam and the friendship between Mariam and Laila.I am shocked by the violence and abuse of Rasheed. It is a beautiful, heart-wrenching story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely bond and an indestructible love. Although Mariam and Laila suffer many pains, yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism. In the end it is love that triumphs over death and destruction.Love may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you consider the war-ravaged landscape of Afghanistan. But that is the emotion—subterranean, powerful, beautiful, illicit, and infinitely patient—that suffuses the pages of Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns. As in his best-selling first novel,The Kite Runner, Hosseini movingly examines the connections between unlikely friends, the fissures that open up between parents and children, the intransigence of quiet hearts. Nowadays, there are still many wars in this land threatening the lives of the people stay there. And I wonder how will these Afghan women do, and more important, what can WE do.Style &TechniqueA Thousand Splendid Suns received significant praise from reviewers, with Publishers Weekly calling it "a powerful, harrowing depiction of Afghanistan"and USA Today describing the prose as "achingly beautiful".Lisa See of The New York Times attributed the book's success to Hosseini "understanding the power of emotion as few other popular writers do".Natasha Walter from The Guardian wrote, "Hosseini is skilled at telling a certain kind of story, in which events that may seem unbearable - violence, misery and abuse - are made readable. He doesn't gloss over the horrors his characters live through, but something about his direct, explanatory style and the sense that you are moving towards a redemptive ending makes the whole narrative, for all its tragedies, slip down rather easily."。
Book report: lost son foundsummaryIn Genesis, Jacob(Israel),had twelve sons.Because he loved Joseph more, the other eleven sold Joseph to Egypt and lied to their father that Joseph was devoured by wolves, however, Joseph, who was blessed by the God, relied on the ability to explain the dreams correctly and became the wealthy and prestigious person in Egypt. When there were a starvation time across the world, Jacob ordered his sons to buy some food in Egypt, where was ruled by their brother Joseph. At first, Joseph disguised himself so that his brother wouldn't recoganize him.He told them that one of them should be kept in prison as hostage and the others came home with the food. Joseph also warned if they came again, they must take their youngest brother to him.As the famine was still severe in the country, the brothers had no choice but to take Benjamin to Egypt. When Joseph saw his youngest brother who had the same mother with him, he couldn't overcome his feelings, again, he gave them the food with the money to buy the food in their packs. Specially, Joseph ordered the steward to put his sliver goblet in the bag on the youngest one's. On their way home, the steward caught up with them and said someone had stolen the sliver goblet. Finally , the goblet was found in Benjamin's pack. So they had to return to the city, and Judah, who once had intended to kill Joseph, begged for forgiveness. At that time, Joseph couldn't control himself and told the truth that he was their brother. He comforted them not to feel sorry for his misfortune, for it's the design of God, then , the family came together and led happy life.CommentsTo be honest, I am not that into the Bible Stories, for I think it's illogical. Anyway, it is fairy tale. When I read the chapter that Judah and his other brothers want to kill Joseph, I feltincomprehensible. It is not like conflicts in ancient royal family, which involves right, privilege and throne. Then, in this chapter, Joseph became powerful and could decide the death and survival of his brothers. I had thought he would revenge himself on them, on the contrary, he helped them. During the process, his behaviour was strange , he took hostage and put his brother into an terrible condition, what did he really want to prove? I felt confused, but from his words, I see how these people believed in God ,no matter what happened to them,no matter what misfortune they have bore, they have no complaint. They regard it as the test the almighty God put on them, after this bad luck, tolerance in the Bible. The stories are like the history of God or the Christianity. This is the root of the religion, I suppose.I am an atheist, but I really show respect for the God-fearing people, for they have their brief regardless what happens around.TranslationsIt is the Lord's Passover, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt when he struck the Egyptians but spared our house. The people bowed down and prostrated themselves.这是逾越节,当天主惩罚埃及人时,越过了我们的住宅。

Your reflections on the book.(at least 300 words)字数:100~500 满分:100A Book ReportThe book about Robinson Crusoe was a masterpiece of Daniel. Defoe, which is a famous English writer, journalist and pamphleteer. His father was a small business man. Then he selected the business at first. Besides, he travels widely, with selling underwear, alcohol and tobacco, wool fabrics, brick industry early. At the same time, he also engaged in political activities. When he became old and weak, his children abandoned him, then Daniel. Defoe died miserably in 1731.However, his novels were written in his lateryears. His works have played a huge role in the development of British and European novels. Therefore, Daniel. Defoe was called "The Father of English and European Novel".Robinson Crusoe, Defoe's first novel, was published in 1719. The story was based on a sailor, Alexander Selkirk's true experience. Defoe inspired by this true story to written the "Robinson Crusoe". Robinson Crusoe, the main character, was born in a rich family. His parents have great expectations for him, hoping him to become a lawyer and live a comfortable life. However, Crusoe abandoned himself to adventure, setting his mind to make his living by going to the sea. He thought nothing could be more fantastic than adventure and creation in the world, and without this, life would be meaningless. Attracted by the outside world and the expansive sea, Crusoe went to the sea several times. Each time, after going through such hardship, Crusoe determined to return to his parents and never does thatagain. However, due to his dissatisfaction of the ordinary life and his curiosity of the vast sea, Crusoe decided to have a sea journey again. Unfortunately, one time the shipwreck made Crusoe come to a desolate island, where he lived for 28 years. The main idea of this book is to show the quality of diligence as well as the indomitable spirit of labor. After reading Robinson Crusoe, I was deeply moved by Crusoe for his strong will and positive attitude towards the hardship and towards the tough life. For one thing, As Albert Einstein said, "Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character". I will choose to have inspiring, positive thoughts instead of depressing, negative thoughts. Provided that Crusoe dropped himself when he came to the deserted island because he didn't know to do anything, the only result is that he would die directly. A positive attitude is the motivation of doing anything. For another thing, just as the saying goes:" Where there is a will, there is a way". Due to his hard work and exploring spirit, also his willpower and optimism, Crusoe accomplished a lot and got great ability. Let us bear this motto in mind no matter how much thunders and thorns there are on our road ahead, and then we will be successful with such precious and powerful spirit. In short, a positive attitude is of the greatest importance in our life.。
Book-report——Ataleoftwocities第一篇:Book-report——A tale of two citiesA Book-Report of a Tale of Two CitiesA Tale of Two Cities is a masterpiece written by Charles Dickens. The book that I read has 428 pages and was published by the Tsinghua University Press in 2009.It costs 39 Yuan.I chose this book to read because I admire the author, Charles Dickens. He created vast collection of characters in his vivid novels. He focus was always on the individual rather than on abstract theories. Thus I could read the story with fewer difficulties.Charles Dickens was an excellent novelist. It was the quality of his writing that makes him popular with readers even today.A Tale of Two Cities is a sad and touching story. It took place in the London and Paris during French Revolution.Doctor Manette has been put into prison for 18 years as a result of his efforts of exposing the Evremonde family’s evil. However, for the sake of his daughter’s happiness, he agreed his daughter Lucie to marry his enemy’s son---Charles Darnay.Innocent Darnay condemned wickedness of his family and gave up the Evremonde title as well as all the property.Nevertheless due to he’s family background, he was put into prison in French by the outrageous people in French Revolution.A young lawyer named Sydney Carton fell in love with Lucie. He decided to die for Darnay for the sake of Lucie’s happiness. The family of1Manette finally escaped back to England safely while Carton departed to them for ever.Sydney Carton was my favorite character in this book.He was the person whose words were sharp but heart was kind.I was sure that he loved Lucie no less than Charles.Thought he had confronted his love to Lucie, afterLucie and Darnay’s wedding, he cho se not to disturb her happiness. When Darnay was sentenced to death, Sydney Carton tried his best to rescue Darnay at the expense of his own life.I was deeply touched by this tragic ending. After all, few people could do that as him.Doctor Manette was a just and respectful man. When he witnessed the terrible crime of the Evremonde family, he felt it was his duty to inform the government minister, which resulted in his longtime imprisonment.18 years later, thought he knew Charles Darnay was his enemy’s son, he gave up revenge and accepted the marriage because he loved daughter and wanted her to be happy.Madame Defarge was totally opposite to Doctor Manette. Her family was ruined by the Evremonde family when she was a little girl, thus she didn’t let go any chances to revenge Darnay, even thought Darnay had nothing to do with those wickedness.Grudge had already taken charge of her mind. She even wanted to hurt Darnay’s innocent wife Lucie and their child.T o forgive or not, it is a question.Madame Defarge and Doctor Manette, both of them suffered from brutal persecution. The former chose to forgive because of love while the later never gave up her revenge until she was killed.I sometimes assumed that women were more sensitive than men, so it is harder for women to abandon grudge. If I were one of them, I would probably never forgive but I would never hurt someone innocent. It was really ashamed that I couldn’t bring myself to do as Doctor Manette.A T ale of Two Cities was an excellent story.Once you begin to read it, you would be absorbed in it.Well organized plot, vivid description, especially the love between characters would inspire your desire to finish reading this book.第二篇:双城记英文简介 bookreport专用A Tale of Two Cities It was the year 1757, the doctor Manette lived in Pairs. And one day he treated a young How many days can you survive? Day or days?Daniel Defoe dramatizes such an experience in Robinson Crusoe, an adventure story about a man named Robinson Crusoe who is stranded on a desert island for 28 years. This book is one of the forerunners of the English realistic novel, which is based on a real experience of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived four years on the Pacific island.Defoe develops the sailor's story with his own imagination. As the struggle of man vs.nature and man vs.man is so interesting to read, I keep myattention on the story until the very end.As a bourgeois writer, Daniel Defoe shows his ideas about the rising bourgeois class in his book.He creates the image of Robinson Crusoe, a typical of the rising English bourgeois class in the 18th century.Robinson Crusoe is a practical, diligent and religious person with a restless curiosity to know more about the world. He is never content with his current life and he is longing for adventures. All his characters indicate the bourgeoisie's dissatisfactions with their situations at that time and their desires for extension in the world.Another thing delivering through the whole story is individualism. With the influence of the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution, more and more people are being interested in individualism, especially the bourgeois class. And from the story of Robinson Crusoe, we can see his desire to prove individual power in the face of social and natural challenges.Although his bad luck puts him alone on a desolate island, he doesn't lose his belief to survive.Alone on the island, Robinson Crusoe overcomes many difficulties: hunger, loneliness, the fight against disease etc.Of course he is only an ordinary person and he also has fears andgets puzzled at the beginning. We can see that he is in despair and qu estiones himself “Why did God put me on this island all alone ?” But later he gets out of despair and does all he can to find out ways to provide himself with residence, food, and tools. He salvages things from a wrecked ship and makes full use of them.Just as the proverb says, “God helps those who help themselves”.With great will and strength, Robinson Crusoe creats for himself a kingdom by taming animals, gathering fruit, growing crops, and hunting. He also makes a calendar to remind himself of the world. It is his marvelous capacity for work, his boundless courage and energy in overcoming obstacles that make him a hero. And in the story, Daniel Defoe also sings the praises of human labour, presenting it as the source of pride and happiness as well as a means to change man's living conditions. However, Daniel Defoe also beautifies colonialism and slavery in the story., which I think is the limitation of his class and the times.Obviously, Robinson Crusoe is a colonist. For example he puts up a sign as his landing monument after he sets foot on the island. He also thinks he owns Friday's life and wants Friday to be obedient just because he saves Friday and gives Friday a name as a man. Moreover, Robinson Crusoe's adventures is not only for survival, but also for occupancy of wealth and land. All in all, it's no wonder that Robinson Crusoe is a successful realistic novel. On one hand, it glorifies the individualism and tells a story of ordinary people in plain and simple language;on the other hand, it shows a vivid and positive picture of he rising English bourgeois class at its early stage of development.。

A Book Report: Jane Eyre ⅠCharlotte Bronte (1816~1855), a British novelist, was born at Thornron, in Yorkshire, England in a poor pastor family in 1816. She was best known for her second novel-- Jane Eyre, which was published in 1847, in the early years of the Victorian period. The novel-- Jane Eyre has shown us a story about a self-respecting female-- Jane Eyre’s whole life. Jane Eyre was an orphan who boarded at her aunt’s home, since her parents had died. Although she did the best of her ability to behave well, she cannot please her aunt. Soon, she was sent to the Lowood Charity School and persisted in learning there under the extreme conditions. There Jane met Helen Bums, an intellectual girl who finally died of lung disease, and made friends with her. And from Helen, Jane learnt tolerance and peace, though she cannot accept Helen’s rejection of the material world. After a few years study at the charity school, Jane became the teacher there. However, she got tired of the life there and got up the courage to start a new life. For this, Jane decided to apply for a career by writing to the newspaper and later become a governess of Thornfield Manor. There she found her true love, and she fell in love with Edward Fairfax Rochester, the host of Thornfield Manor. Alas, at the time she was going to get married with her host, the secret that Rochester had got married 15 years ago and had a mad wife made the wedding went up in smoke.Knowing this secret, Jane was so sad that she decided to leave Thornfield Manor. And after she spending all her saving, she began to beg along the way but finally faint in St. John a priest’s door and was saved by St. John and his two sisters. Meanwhile, St. John helped Jane in finding a teacher’s work, and later he found out that Jane is his cousin by chance. Appreciating Jane’s personality, St. John asked Jane to marry him and be a wife of the missionary. However, Jane didn’t promise. When she back to Thornfield Manor, she found that the whole park had already in ruins. And Rochester was burned blind eyes and lose an arm, while he tried to save his wife who set the fire. At last, Jane got married with Rochester and gave birth to a boy.According to this novel, Jane Eyre was a kindhearted and meditative woman who lived at the bottom of the society. Although her life was full of cruel, her strong will and her pursuit in the equal happiness are worth to be praised. From the depictions of Jane’s childhood, Jane lived in an unequal life when she was a child. However, facing the unequal treatment, Jane showed her intense spirit of resistance. She dared to counter while her cousin punched her; she shouted that “they are not quality to stay with me”, while Mrs. Reed asked her to keep away from her children. Moreover, compared with Helen Bums who choose to love her personal enemy, Jane’s character of resistance was presented obviously. So from these I can see that Jane is a self- respecting female who is unwilling to compromise humiliating and destiny of stubborn.Of course, Jane’s character had been influencing her life, including her view point of love. With the strong will of pursuit of equal, she thought that love should be set up on the basis of the spirit of equality, and should not depend on social status, wealth and appearance. For these, she didn’t give up her pursuit of happiness, although shewas a servant. Her love to Rochester was pure and noble, since she had never care about his wealth. What’s more, the reason why she loved him is because he equality with her and take her as a friend. She has once said that “If god had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh: it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both have passed through the grave, and we stood at god’s feet, equal as we are!” By saying these, Jane told her love to Rochester frankly, and she was showing her pursuit of equality to Rochester. In addition, from her saying, I can understand that she was not only contending for rights for herself, but for the women, who were neither beauty nor wealth. And after reading Jane Eyre, I thought that we, females should try our best to resistance to oppression and social prejudice, to contend equality right and to pursuit of happiness.。
