Teaching aims:
1.Target language knowledge:
Students are expected to learn the words and idioms used to describe emotions
and feelings.
Students will learn some nouns related to emotions and adjective forms of these
words.
2.Target language skills:
Improve students’ speaking and reading ability by discussion and competition.
3.Emotional goals:
Make students form the habit of self-study and develop their consciousness of
cooperation.
Important and difficult points:
Enable students to master the words and idioms related to emotions.
How to enable students to use the words and idioms about emotions to express
their feelings exactly and freely.
Teaching aids:
Multimedia and blackboards.

Task based approach and Communicative teaching
Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in ( brainstorming )(2分钟)
Encourage students to think of as many words as possible to express happiness
since they have just learnt the text about happiness.
T: In the last class, we have learnt “what is happiness to you”. Can you
think of some words related to happiness?
S: Yes, delight, joy, cheer, enjoyment, contentment…
T: (write the words that students talked on the blackboard) happiness is a
kind of (wait students to speak out )
S: Emotion
T: Yeah, emotions are different kinds of strong human feelings. Happiness is
just one of the many emotions. Today we are going to learn Word power —— Emotions.
Step 2 Vocabulary learning and expansions(10分钟)
Guide the students to recall the words related to emotions of different
respects by making students guess what emotions the pictures on the screen show.
Inspire the students to think about their noun forms.(refer to the form on
page 22)
Step 3 Exercises and consolidation (10分钟)
Do excises part A on P.22 : Make students write the answers on the blackboard
and let themselves explain how to choose the answers.
Group1: angry anger
Group2: content contentment
Group3: curious curiosity
Group4: frightened fright
Group5: concerned concern
Group6: sadness sad
Do excises part B on P.23: Make students finish the exercise. Let students
discuss and find out the important points that we have to pay attention to in the
passage. Enable students to summarize Flora’s change of emotions.

Step 4 Idiomatic expressions(5分钟)
Since students have learnt some words and phrases related to emotions, let’s
learn some English idioms about emotions.
Discuss and practice doing the excises offered, guessing the real meaning of
the underlined parts.
1.I don’t know what makes him so angry but he is really hot under the collar.
2.He is extremely irritable ——he flies off the handle at the slightest thing.
3.When he scored the winning goal, he was over the moon.
4.When he got the news that he was admitted to Peking University he was on
cloud nine.
5.She was a bit down in the dumps because she were going to take her exams
again.
6.She felt blue as she failed the math exam.
Step 5 Competition (12分钟)
Enable students to take an active part in the competition.
Rules: Ten words for each group and two students from each groups. A come to
the front and facing the class. B stands in the seat and gets the word on the
screen and then describes it for A to guess. The group that guesses the most words
in two minutes is the winner.
Step 6 Homework (1分钟)
1.Revise the words learnt in Word power and learn to use the English idioms in
daily life.
2.Preview Grammar and usage.
