2014届最新高考英语一轮单元复习精品阅读理解提升文章精选一百篇(67)Unit 69W hy Character Counts? Some time ago I was asked to consult for a bank that was h aving a problem with employee morale. "I don't know what's wrong," complained their young president. Bright and ambitious, he'd risen through the ranks only to se e his institution faltering. He blamed his employees. "No matter what incentives I provide," he said, "they won't shake off this gloom." He was right. The atmosphere seemed poisoned with suspicion and lack of trust. But no one would tell me the source o this distrust. Finally the truth emerged. The boss, who was married, was h aving an affair with an emp loyee. And everyone knew it.It was obvious now that the company's poor performance was caused by his conduct. But the greatest damage the m an was doing was to himself. He was thinking only of his own gratification, disregarding long-term consequences. Moreover, he had violated the trust with his wife. In a word, his failing was one of character.Today it is out of vogue to speak in terms of character. But there is no more essential a spect of any person. Character is made up of those principles and values that give your life direction, meaning and depth. These constitute your inner sense of what's right and wrong based not on the rules of conduct but on who you are. They include such trait as integrit y, honesty, courage, fairness and generosity -- which arise from the hard choices we have to make in life. So wrong is simply in doing wrong, not in getting caught.Yet some people wonder if our inner values matter anymore. Af ter all, hasn't our noted bank executive succeeded in every visible way, despite his faults? This question demon strates a quandary of our modern life. Many have come to believe that the only things we need for success are talent, energy and personality. But history has taught us that in the long run, who we are is more important than who we appear to be. During the nation's first century and a half, almost everything in the literature of success and self-help focused on what could be called the character ethic. Such famous figures as Benjam in Franklin and Thomas Jefferson made cle ar their belief that we can only experience true success and happiness by making character the bedrock of their lives. After we moved into the industrial age, the basic view of success shifted to what we could call the personality ethic. Success becomes more a function of charm, skills and techniques that, at least on the surface, smooth the process of human interaction. Rather than struggle with thorny issues of right and w rong, we turned to making thing s run smoothly. Some of that philosophy expressed itself with harmless but superficial maxims such as "smiling wins more friends than frowning". Other ideas were clearly deceptive -- faking interest in other's ho bbies so theywill like you, for instance. With a value system based solely on skill and personality, we find heroes in athletes, musicians and in powerful business executives. But despite the admiration we feel for these achievers, we shouldn't necessarily look upon them as role model. While skill is certainly needed for success, it can never guarantee happiness and fulfillment. These come from developing character. What become of the bank president who was involve d sexually with an employee? He confessed to his wife, who forgave him. Then he called a meeting of his staff and addressed their morale problem. "I have found the cause of the problem," he said. "It is me. I'm asking you to give me another chance." It took time, but eventually employee morale -- a sense of openness, optimism and trust -- improved. In the end the executive was finding his own path to character.。
2014届高考英语一轮复习话题阅读素材8Two Basic Ways to See GrowthThere are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external result or product that can be identified and measured. The worker who gets a promotion, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language -- all these are examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since by definition, it is a journey and not the specific signposts and landmarks along the way. The process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution and courage, as they encounter new experiences and unexpected obstacles. In their process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept. In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to confront the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may fail at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is essential to our ability to grow. Do we perceive ourselves as quick and curious? If so, then we tend to take more chances and to be more open to unfamiliar experiences. Do we think we are shyand indecisive? Then our sense of timidity can cause us to hesitate, to move more slowly, and not to take a step until we know the ground is safe. Do we think we are slow to adapt to change or that we are not smart enough to cope with a new challenge? Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not to try at all. These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we do not confront and overcome these internal fears and doubts, if we protect ourselves too much, then we cease to grow. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.。

Seattle has its Space Needle. And, Longview has its squirrel bridge. The bridge, which has attracted international attention, is now a local landmark. The Nutty Narrows Bridge was built in 1963 by a local builder, Amos Peters, to givesquirrels a way to cross the busy road without getting flattened by passing cars. The original bridge was built over Olympia Way on the west edge of the library grounds. Before the bridge was built, squirrels had to avoid traffic to and from the Park Plaza office building where office staff put out a nutty feast for the squirrels. Many times, Peters and others who worked in and near Park Plaza witnessed squirrels being run over. One day Peters found a dead squirrel with a nut still in its mouth, and that day's coffee break discussion turned into squirrel safety. The group of businessmen cooked up the squirrel bridge idea and formed a committee to ask the blessing of the City Council(市政会). The Council approved, and Councilwoman Bess LaRiviere jokingly named the bridge “Nutty Narrows”.After architects designed the bridge, Amos Peters and Bill Hutch started construction. They built the 60-foot bridge from aluminum and lengths of fire hose (消防水带). It cost $1,000.It didn't take long before reports of squirrels using the bridge started. Squirrels were even seen guiding their young and teaching_them_the_ropes. The story was picked up by the media, and Nutty Narrows became known in newspapers all over the world. In 1983, after 20 years of use, Peters took down the worn-out bridge. Repairs were made and crosspieces were replaced. The faded sign was repainted and in July 1983, hundreds of animal lovers attended the completion ceremony of the new bridge.Peters died in 1984, and a ten-foot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in memory of its builder and his devotion to the project.16. The Nutty Narrows Bridge was built in order to ________.A.offer squirrels a place to eat nutsB.set up a local landmarkC.help improve trafficD.protect squirrels17. What happened over the coffee break discussion?A. The committee got the Council's blessing.B. The squirrel bridge idea was born.C. A councilwoman named the bridge.D. A squirrel was found dead.18. What does the underlined phrase “teaching them the ropes”probably mean in the text?A. Passing them a rope.B. Directing them to store food for winter.C. Teaching them a lesson.D. Showing them how to use the bridge.19. Which of the following is true of the squirrel bridge?A. It was replaced by a longer one.B. It was built from wood and metal.C. It was rebuilt after years of use.D. It was designed by Bill Hutch.BThe average temperature around the world is rising. People living in the US Midwest might find a fact hard to believe, though. The scientists suggest that the change in the Midwest climate may have happened because of farming. The first study was led by David Changnon, a climatologist(气候学家) at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.Changnon and his team studied temperature records from the sites in the Midwest. They found that since 1970, the average temperature in the region during July and August has gone down—by up to one degree Fahrenheit(华氏度)—from what it was during the years between 1930 and 1969. Their investigation also showed that the average rainfall in those states during those two months has increased. Between 1970 and 2009, about 0.33 inch more rain fell than between 1930 and 1969.These_changes may be connected by humidity(湿度), Changnon says. Humidity is the measure of how much moisture is in the air. Humid air, which contains a lot of moisture, takes longer to heat up than dry air, Changnon notes. And humid air often releases its moisture through rainfall. So where did the extra moisture in the air come from?Changnon points to farms in the region. As plants grow, they pull moisture from the ground and release it into the air. And among plants, soybeans (大豆) and corn plants release a lot of moisture. Midwestern farms now plant more soybeans and corn than in the past, with 97 percent of farmland today planted with these two crops. In the 1930s, corn and soybeans covered only about 57 percent, Changnon says. He also notes that the plants are planted closer together now than they used to be, so there are more plants per acre than in the past. The second study, like Changnon's, also found an increase in rainfall in the same area. But it points to another possible source for the increased moisture. Alan Robock at Rutgers University was part of the team that produced the second study and presented the group's findings. The team found that irrigation practices in the Great Plains have changed over the years. The researchers studied a vast area in the region. They found that in 1930, farmers in that region irrigated only about 1.8 million acres of farmland. In 1980, however, farmers irrigated nearly 15 million acres. Plants use the water and then release it into the air. These results by Changnon and Robock and their colleagues are the first step toward understanding a change in the weather.20.What does the underlined term “These changes”refer to?A.Lower temperatures and more rainfall.B.Higher temperatures and higher humidity.C.Making a record both in the past and now.D.The two periods of the 40-year investigation.21.Which of the following could be the possible sources for the increased moisture in the US Midwest?A.Scientists' research and farmers' attention.B.Less farmland and more plants.C.More plants and irrigation practices.D.Natural reservoirs and underground rivers.22.The studies show that in America's Midwest,________.A.the average temperature is getting higher and higherB.more and more farmland has been desertedC.the amount of rain is closely related to the temperatureD.summers are now cooler and wetter than they were in years past23.According to the passage, irrigating more and more plants means ________.A.making more space for farms and buildingsB.making more and more water into the air, and thus causing more rainC.more farms depending on water-saving systemsD.using plants to change the climate课时作业(二十六)Ⅰ.1.A here和there放在句首时,主语是名词要用全部倒装,主语为代词则不用倒装。

Where Does Bad-breath Odor Come From?
We all have offensive breath at one time or another. In most cases, offensive breath originates from bacteria in the mouth, although there are other more surprising causes.
Until a few years ago, the most doctors could do was to counsel patients with bad breath about oral cleanliness. Now they are finding new ways to treat the usually curable condition.
Bad breath can happen whenever the normal flow of saliva slows. Our mouths are full of bacteria feeding on protein in bits of food and shed tissue. The bacteria emit evil-smelling gases, the worst of which is hydrogen sulfide.
Mouth bacteria thrive in airless conditions. Oxygen-rich saliva keeps their numbers down. When we sleep, for example, the saliva stream slows, and sulfur-producing bacteria gain the upper hand, producing classic "morning breath".
Alcohol, hunger, too much talking, breathing through the mouth during exercise -- anything that dries the mouth produces bad breath. so can stress, though it's not understood why. Some people's breath turns sour every time they go on a job interview.Saliva flow gradually slows with age, which explains why the elderly have more bad-breath trouble than younger people do. Babies, however, who make plenty of
saliva and whose mouths contain relatively few bacteria have characteristically sweet breath.
For most of us, the simple, dry-mouth variety of bad breath is easily cured. Eating or drinking starts salvia and sweeps away many of the bacteria. Breakfast often stops morning breath.
Those with chronic dry mouth find that it helps to keep gum, hard candy, or a bottle of water or juice around. Brushing the teeth wipes out dry-mouth odor with its own smell, but the effect lasts no more than an hour. Some mouthwashes claim to kill the bacteria responsible for bad breath. The trouble is, they don't necessarily reach all offending germs. Most bacteria are well protected from mouthwash under thick layers of mucus. If the mouthwash contains alcohol -- as most do -- it can intensify the problem by drying out the mouth.。
