For many parents, making sure their children get the right amount of sleep can be stressful. This is especially true during high-pressure times such as exams when students tend to study all night for the next day. Unfortunately, it is often counterproductive(适得其反的) because with fewer hours to sleep, the teen brain doesn't get enough time to lay down what they've studied the night before. In her groundbreaking book The Teenage Brain, neuroscientist Dr.Frances Jensen explains that bedtime isn't simply a way for the body to relax and recover after working, studying or playing a hard day. It is the glue that allows us not only to recollect our experiences but also to remember everything we've learned that day. Basically the more we learn, the more we need to sleep, which is why a good sleep is of great importance in achieving success at school. Then how much sleep do teenagers need? There is no magic number for exactly how much sleep teenagers need, but the Austrian Centre for Education in Sleep(ACES)suggests 8 to 10 hours per day for high school adolescents. What happens if they don't get enough sleep? According to ACES, poor sleep will have all sorts of negative effects on teenagers, including rise in blood pressure, mood swings and impatient behaviors. Without adequate sleep the focus and attentiondrifts making it harder to receive information. The brain can no longer function to deal with information properly and access previously learned information. So, how can parents help? If you think your child needs more sleep, try making gradual changes to their sleeping habits. Small increases have been shown to be effective in changing sleep patterns. And remember your children are going through a period of their lives when their brains and bodies are going through a lot of changes. Not only is your job to help make changes, it's also to ride the wave with them. It may not be easy, but they will thank you for it eventually.

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tiger s behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver's seat is another matter.Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don't even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise tounpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can't even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take (互让) from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.
Advertising plays a major role in the competitive business world. Many industries take advantage of the power of advertising to attract or to win customers away from their business competitors. The influence of advertising is so huge that it causes many people to buy things that they don't want at the start. Advertising encourages people to buy things they don't want through misleading ideas. Advertising is proven to be a successful tool to stress the features of their product to the public even though it's regarded undesirable such as cigarettes, drugs, alcohols and so on. For example, Dunhill, a cigarette company which sponsors many football teams, seems to be promoting cigarettes to the public. Without the sponsorship(资助), the company will be less known to the public, resulting in fewer sales of cigarettes.Besides that, advertising has a large influence on the decisions made by the people in their everyday life. Many businesses use advertising as a form of promoting to create awareness about their product in the market. For instance, in a fast food industry, theintroduction of a new flavor of burger needs advertising to reach the public while the other burgers require advertising to increase sales. Children, especially, are easily influenced by advertisements and will have the desire to dine at fast food restaurants after that. Although fast food is bad for health, it has successfully become appealing to the pubic through advertising. However, advertising plays a part in helping customers to compare a product in terms of price, quality, reliability and so on. Without advertising, it will be very difficult for customers to judge the worthiness of a product. For example, advertisements published by various companies have given the customers the opportunity to choose wisely when purchasing an item. Without the power of advertising, customers will be stuck to a brand which may not offer the best choice.二、词汇讲解1. at the start 开始,起初The new system will be confronted with great difficulties at the start.

Although some people don't like using automatic hand dryers in restrooms, It may actually be argued that motion-sensing(动作感应)hand dryers are a practical alternative to paper towels(纸巾). I believe that our school would benefit from investing in automatic hand dryers in all the restrooms.First of all, the automatic hand dryer Is very sanitary(卫生的). Instead of pulling on a lever(手柄) touched by a large number of students, users can just stick their hands under the air dryer. No bacteria can get on them because there is nothing to touch. In addition, if the school buys automatic hand dryers, we can save money. There is a terrible waste of paper towels in the restrooms. Students continuously pull on the lever for unneeded towels until the dispensers(自动售货机) are empty. An automatic hand dryer costs about $ 500, with very little additional cost over time while paper towels can cost $ 25 a case, or about $ 500 a year. After just one year, it would pay for itself. Finally, our bathroom is a paper towel mess! There are always piles of paper towels on the floor. Sometimes the extras fall from the dispenser unused. Many times kids make their used towel into a ball and aim for a basket. But if they miss the target, the paper ball stays on the floor. Paper towels leave so much litter in the restrooms that the restrooms are a mess.People use the hand dryers for just a few seconds, and they think that automatic hand dryers don't dry their hands as thoroughly as paper towels. However, studies have shown that when people dry their hands for at least 30 seconds, automatic dryersactually dry much better than paper towels. It is difficult to get every part of your hand dry using paper towels, but the air can if you take a few extra seconds. As you see there are some good points, let's install automatic hand dryers as soon as possible.二、中心句转换❶Motion-sensing(动作感应)hand dryers are a practical alternative to paper towels(纸巾).I believe that our school would benefit from investing in automatic hand dryers in all the restrooms.--Compared with paper towels, hand dryers have more advantages, which will benefit school in four ways.❷First of all, the automatic hand dryer Is very sanitary(卫生的). Something happens to many children when they are out of school over the summer months. It is called the "summer slide". This may sound like a ride at a water park. But it's not. Summer slide is when children forget much of what they learned during the latest school year.To fight the effects of summer slide, teachers often give students homework over the summer. Many parents may send children to all kinds of camps or find other activities to keep them learning. Some even try to build up their children's strengths by getting them into extra tutoring. However, experts say keeping children busy all the time is not good for them. The result is often a tired child with an overcrowded schedule. This keeps a child's brain active constantly-learning, gathering information and preparing for the next event. And this may have the opposite effect the parents are not hoping for. What should parents do instead? Nothing.According to Lea Waters, a psychologist specializing in positive psychology and positive education, slowing down actually helps children become the best they can be. Machines need to be reset, while kids need to goof off(偷懒). She says that goofing off really allows kids to have some downtime, when they are not focused on a specific task but are free to do something that they're interested in doing and that they can do more automatically and get enjoyment from, like shooting baskets or listening to the music. She also adds that goofing off does not mean the brain isn't working It just goes into this default network mode(默认网络模式)and uses that time to process all the information it had during the day, to integrate(整合)new information. It makes a kind of decision about what information to put into memory and what to get rid of, which in fact helps to improve memory.

Whether you're looking for a quick hotel in the city or an isolated resort in the tropics, where you choose to stay can make or break your vacation experience. But even the most seasoned travelers may not know the difference between the two main types of homes-away-from-home. Besides their first letter, is there any real difference between hotels and motels? These two types of lodging (宾馆) have the same basic purpose-a place for travelers to sleep but there are plenty of features that set them apart. For instance, they came to be for different reasons, and at very different times. The word "hotel" dates back to the 1600s and comes from a French word, hotel. That word, just like the English one, referred to a place that provides lodging, meals, entertainment, and other services to travelers.Motels, on the other hand, are a much more recent-and pretty much exclusively American-lodging option. This word dates back to the 1920s and combines the words "hotel" and "motor." As America's major highway system developed, so did motels, filling the need for roadside stops for motorists traveling cross-country.There are also some smaller differences that can help you figure out which type of place you're in. Hotels tend to be built for longer stays, while motels are geared more for one-or two-night stops along a journey. Because of this, hotels are much more likely to have offerings like lounges, gyms, and entertainment. So, in the end, it comes down to what you want from your trip and from your lodging. Want the place you stay to be just as much a part of your travel experience as anything else? Opt for a hotel. Just need a place to pop in and out of to shower and sleep? A motel might be the better choice.

For many high school students, giving an in-class presentation is an approach to their growth. Teachers will call up students, one by one, to present their work in front of the class, and, though it is often tense, many people say it has helped turn them into more confident public speakers. Some educators also credit it with building leadership skills and increasing students' confidence and understanding of materials. But in the past few years, students have started calling for an end to in-class presentations as they show discrimination against those with anxiety. This week, a tweet posted by a 15-year-old high school student declaring "Stop forcing students to present in front of the class and give them a choice not to" received more than 130,000 rewets and nearly half a million likes. In fact, being a high schooler nowadays is more stressful than ever. Students are burdened with extra hours of homework. They stay up every night till 1:00 a.m. finishing homework on their third Red Bull. Anxiety is increasing at a faster rate than depression (抑郁) as the leading mental-health issue affectingteenagers, a recent study in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics found. These students want more options. They say that every student has unique strengths and that they should be allowed to present their work in ways that speak to those strengths. This might mean presenting alone in front of the teacher, or choosing between several alternatives like producing a piece of art or an essay for private judgment instead of presenting their work orally.Educators have begun to take it seriously. They agree teachers should listen to students and hear their voices and respond to that. If studen ts’ feelings are ignored, they might just walk away. However, not everyone is convinced. Some hold the view that pushing students out of comfort zones is a big part of what they should do as some students are deathly afraid to do it.
Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was though to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.Though the belief in the merit (好处) of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18 century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist (免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter (后者) position is gaining some ground. One possible version:(参考范文)People have mixed opinions towards dirt on our skin. (要点1) For a long time in history, people of some European countries, such as France, believed that dirt protected people from getting ill. (要点2) However, people began to change their attitudes to dirt about 200 years ago. People have been told that washing dirt off our body can keep us healthy. (要点3) However, some scientists believe that exposure to some dirt may help our immune system. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt. Different people have different attitudes towards dirt. Different people have different attitudes towards dirt on the skin. 1“People have mixed opinions towards dirt on our skin. ”概括非常精炼。
2. 第二段主要谈到了在16世纪,人们认为dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease,尤以英、法两国的贵族为代表。
Though the belief in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since 18 century.
2 “For a long time in history, people of some European countries, such as France, believed that dirt protected people from getting ill.”
3. 第三段用Though引出人们对dirt观点的转变“…since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health.” 3“However, people began to change their attitudes to dirt about 200 years ago. People have been told that washing dirt off our body can ke ep us healthy.”4.
4“However, some scientists believe that exposure to some dirt may help our immune system.”
