She told her mother, Jahira, about the dream. Jahira said, “Lisa said that in her dream she went to the Olympics. She described everything at this international competition. At first I did not take her story seriously. ”But Lisa kept talking about her dream. She told it to her father, David. So Jahira and David decided to pay for Lisa to learn gymnastics. So Lisa started to train at a special and competitive gym. Though only 7 years old, she was already training to compete at a high level. The years passed quickly. Lisa got better and better. By the time she was 12 years old, Lisa was training so many hours each day that she did not have time to do things that many other Americans of the same age did. When Lisa was 13, she had a chance to compete in a national gymnastics event. If she did well, the event would give her the chance to join the national team — the team that trains for the Olympics. But the family was out of money. Jahira had to tell Lisa that she could not go. Jahira said, “Tears came to her eyes, and she said, ‘I understand.’”A week or two later, a rich family came to visit Lisa’s gym unexpectedly. They watched Lisa train. Then they asked to talk to her mother. The rich family offered Jahira all the money they needed!Eventually, Lisa competed at the 2012 Olympic trials. She finished 10th in all rounds.24. Lisa’s parents were tired of her talking about her dreamB. Lisa’s parents loved her and were moved by herC. Lisa’s mother supported her dream even at the beginningD. Lisa became a national team player at the age of twelve26. What does the author want to tell us?A. Knowledge is a measure, but practice is the key to it.B. Wherever you go, go with all your heart.C. Nothing is to be got without pain but poverty.D. God blesses the determined and hard-working.27. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A. A Talented GirlB. The Caring ParentsC. An Olympic DreamD. A Helping HandCPope Benedict named five new saints on Sunday, including a Catholic priest, Father Damien, who cared for people in a leper (麻风病患者) colony.Father Damien was born Joseph De Veuster in Belgium. In 1873 he went to the Hawaiian island of Molokai. After several years of working in the colony, he himself developed leprosy (麻风病). Father Damien died in 1889, when he was 49 years old.Leprosy —also called Hansen’s disease — is a bacterial disease that causes skin wounds and nerve damage. The disease can severely disfigure (使变丑) victims and cause death. Untreated patients can spread the bacteria from their nose and mouth through the air to people who are near them a lot.But doctors have been able to treat leprosy since the 1940s. Today they use a combination of three drugs. Experts say after the first treatment, patients can no longer infect others. At the start of this year there were 213,000 cases of leprosy reported in 121 countries. The World Health Organization says there were almost 250,000 new cases last year. But the drug combination can cure the disease within six to twelve months. The number of new cases has been falling in many countries. But there are places where leprosy is still spreading quickly. These include areas of Angola, Brazil, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and India. Other areas are in Madagascar, Mozambique, Nepal and Tanzania.Leprosy is an ancient disease. Its victims have been highly looked down upon — often blamed for their condition and made to feel unclean. In India, leprosy has traditionally been considered a punishment for something bad done in a former life. Other cultures have considered it a sign of evil.James Staples teaches in the School of Social Sciences at Brunel University in Britain. He is the author of the book Peculiar People, Amazing Lives: Leprosy, Social Exclusion and Community Making in South India. He tells us that modern knowledge about leprosy does not necessarily reduce the stigma. Public health campaigns spread the message that leprosy is curable and not highly infectious. Yet he says this message is often more scary for people than the idea that leprosy is some sort of spiritual punishment. That explanation may not do much for the patient’s place in society, he says, “but at least other people don’t think they are going to catch it.”28. What happened to Father Damien according to the passage?A. He died of abnormal cancer.B. He died from an earthquake.C. He died from an accident.D. He died of leprosy.29. What’s people’s attitude towards the victims who are infected with leprosy in the past?A. Sympathetic.B. Concerned.C. Prejudiced.D. Optimistic.30. What does the underlined word “stigma” in the last paragraph probably mean?A. Shame.B. Pride.C. Custom.D. Explanation.31. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. The victims can be cured within 6 to 12 months.B. The victims’ social status has changed greatly since 1940s.C. The disease causes skin wounds and nerve damage.D. The leprosy is still spreading quickly in many countries.D“Why It Can Matter More Than IQ”, this subtitle (副标题) of my 1995 book Emotional Intelligence (EI), unfortunately, has led to misunderstandings of what I actually say. Some readers even jumped to an absurd conclusion that “EI accounts for 80 percent of success.”I never made the claim that EI matters more than IQ for academic achievements. My argument is actually that emotional and social skills give people advantages in areas where such abilities make the most difference, like love and leadership. EI does better than IQ in “soft” ar eas, where intelligence matters relatively little for success.IQ is a much stronger predictor (预测指标) than EI of which jobs or professions people can enter. However, having enough intelligence to hold a given job does not by itself predict whether one will be a star performer or rise to management or leadership positions in one’s field. In part this is because everyone at the top level of a given profession has already been examined for intelligence. At those top levels a high IQ becomes a basic ability, one needed just to get into and stay in the game. The one place, I expect, we will be seeing more data showing a relationship between skills in the emotional and social area and school performance, will be in studies of children who have gone through social/emotional learning (SEL) programs. These courses give students the self-management skills they need to do better on academic achievement scores. A study from the University of Illinois finds around a 10 percent increase in achievement test scores among these students. Probably, the SEL programs would also have meant higher scores on the particular assessment of EI used in the Australian study, and so if they had tested such children, there may well have been a positive connection. Therefore, learning seems to be another area where EI may matter —whether more than IQ is a question based on experience. This is what I want to explain on this website.32. The author writes the passage to _____.A. state his new opinion on IQ and EIB. explain the importance of IQ and EIC. clear up some misunderstandings of his bookD. argue for his study into school learning33. According to the author, EI matters more than IQ for _____.A. family relations; being promoted at workB. being a leader; receiving an MBA degreeC. winning a quiz; becoming a star performerD. becoming an accountant; getting an interview34. The author might agree that _____.A. success has everything to do with intelligenceB. the subtitle of his book is seldom misunderstoodC. EI matters more than IQ for academic achievementD. IQ determines one’s basic ability to enter a certain field35. We can learn from Paragraph 4 that _____.A. the two same studies have opposite findingsB. the SEL programs im prove students’ scores rapidlyC. students’ school performance is decided by their EID. the SEL programs attempt to promote learning with EI第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

So it was very excited to spend money on shopping, nights out, and all the junk food my mum had never let me eat. I managed to max out (达到最高限度) my account within three months and suddenly life wasn’t so much fun.I spent the last two weeks before Easter on a diet of porridge and became self-loathing (自我憎恨的) and I also blamed Asda (阿斯达超市) for all the two-for-one deals I couldn’t resist. Now I’m working full-time to repay my debts. I’m also setting up a separate bank account for my student loan to go into to cover rent and bills. So I’ll be able to keep an eye on my spending. With a lot of hard work and saving over the holidays I’m hoping that I’ll be in better financial shape for next year. After my experience in halls — being kept awake until 4 a.m. and work surfaces permanently covered in mind —I’m looking forward to moving into a house with friends. The partying and social life i n halls are fantastic, but sometimes you’re put wit h people you don’t get on with, and it’s hard to cope with that. It helped me to stay strong, but I wish I had stood up to them rather than felt bullied.I had a really bad time in my first year, which is why I’m going to make the most of universitynext year. However, people who write computer code say that creativity is also an important quality for coding.Software developers in the American state of California have created a game called Osmo Coding Jam. The game is designed to help children use the creative side of their minds as they learn to code. Children can play the game on iPads. There are many activities they can do by the game.Tanya Dodge is the mother of two children, nine-year-old Dylan and his 11-year-old sister Meghan, who play the game. According to her, these activities give them important skills for the future. “It’s an analytical skill that the kids are going to need to have as they grow up today” said Dodge. But the developers of Osmo Coding Jam believe writing code should be more than just an analytical skill. “We want to explore the creative side of coding that I think is often not as explored,” said Felix Hu, an Osmo engineer. Hu added, “The coolest part is that we’re teaching kids how to be creative with code and that’s a really important thing that kids should get comfor table with because coding is creative.”Hu also sees a growing number of parents who feel that software code is a second language thatchildren need to learn to succeed in future jobs. Tanya Dodge, the mother of Dylan and Meghan, consents. She said, “I think you’re going to have to understand at some point the idea of coding will work well in the fu ture.”Hu also explained that very often kids grow up not understanding how a computer works or just thinking that it’s like a magical machine. These plants are used to make traditional medicine, inclu ding drugs to fight cancer. “The loss of medicinal plants is a quiet disaster,” says Sara Oldfield, secretary general of the NGO Botanic Gardens Conservation International. Most people worldwide rely on herbal (药草制的) medicines which are got mostly from wild plants. But some 15,000 of the 50,000 medicinal species are under threat of dying out, according to report from the international conservation group Plantlife. Shortages have been reported in China, India, Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda.Over-harvesting does the most harm, though pollution and competition from invasive species (入侵物种) and habita t destruction all contribute. “Businessmen generally harvest medicinal plants, not caring about sustainability (可持续性),” the Plantlife report says, “damage is serious partly because they have no idea about it, but it is mainly because such collection is unorganized.” Medicinal trees at risk include the Himalayan yew (紫衫) and the African cherry, which are used to treat some cancers. The solution, says the report’s author, Alan Hamilton, is to encourage local people to protect these plants. Ten projects studied by Plantlife in India, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Uganda and Kenya showed this method can succeed. In Uganda, the project has kept a sustainable supply of low-cost cancer treatments, and in China a public-run medicinal plant project has been created for the first time.”“Improving health, earning an income and keeping cultural traditions are important in encouraging peo ple to protect medicinal plants,” says Hamilton, “You have to pay attention to what people are interested in.”Ghillean Prance, the former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London, agrees that medicinal plants are in need of protection. “Not nearly enough is being done,” he told New Scientist. “We are destroying the very plants that are of most use to us.”51. Go through what happened this year, and let your wiser self give you advice.Write a letter to anyone who you feel incomplete with and need closure. Don't send it. Write it for yourself and for your healing. Say exactly what needs to be said, and don't hold back.Give yourself the gift of forgiving someone who hurt you this year. You can do this in person, over the phone or quietly in your own space. Include yourself in this exercise. What mistake, regret or action do you need to forgive yourself for this year?Accept your family exactly the way they are. Have no expectations that they will be different this time around, whether it's during the holidays or through the next year. Do not expect them to understand you or any choices/decisions you've made or are planning to make.Figure out the few things you can do to reenergize yourself, since you will probably need to turn to these things in the coming year. Does walking in nature get you energized? Does working out get your engines running? Is it sleeping in? Prayer? Meditation? Writing? Be clear about what you need more of to continue on your path. What's the top excuse that gets in your way? Write it down and make friends with it. Ask yourself: Is this really true? Who would you be and what would you do without this excuse?24. What may be the best title of the passage?A. Forgiving Yourself for the Past MistakesB. Finding No Excuse to Avoid ChangesC. Finding Peace Within for the New YearD. Energizing Yourself for Changes25. To make yourself less anxious about the changes, you can do all the following EXCEPT .A. Looking back on what happened in the past year to get valuable experienceB. Having no expectations that your family will understand youC. Finding out your top excuse that is in your wayD. Breaking away from anyone you feel incomplete with26. The author probably thinks that .A. Having some excuses can help you get along well in the new yearB. It is unnecessary to be clear about the things you can do to get yourself energizedC. It's important to forgive not only the person who hurt you but also yourselfD. It can be inferred from the passage that .A. it's no use trying to change your husband's personalityB. it's necessary to change your wife's dressing styleC. it's unnecessary for you to make a holiday plan for the familyD. it's natural for your children to support every decision you makeCSometimes people add to what they say even when they don’t talk.Gestures are the “silent language” of every culture. We point a finger or mo ve another part of the body to show what we want to say.It is important to know the body language of every country,or we may be misunderstood. In the United States, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm.If the handshake is weak,it is a sign of weakness of unfriendliness.Friends may place a hand on the other’s arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug.Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a half feet away and at an angle,so they are not facing each other directly.Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch a person by accident, they say,“Pardon me.” or “Excuse me.”Americans like to look the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don’t do so,it means you are bored, hiding something,or are not interested. But when you stare at someone,it is not polite. For Americans,thumbs-up means yes, very good,or well done.Thumbs-down means the opposite. To call a waiter, raise one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as if you are signing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger.Americans shake their index finger at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire them.Learning a culture’s body language is sometimes confusing. If you don’t know what to do,the safest thing to do is to smile.28.From the first paragraph we can learn that ________.A.gestures don’t mean anything while talkingB.gestures can help us to express ourselvesC.we can learn a language well without body languageD.only American people can use gestures29.In the United States, people often ________.A.show their friendship by touching each otherB.show their friendship by glancing at each otherC.say “Pardon me” to each other when they are talkingD.get uncomfortable when you stand too close to them30.If you talk with an American friend,it’s polite to________.A.look up and down at your friend B.look at him or her in the eyesC.hide your watch now and then D.look at your watch now and then 31.When your friend gives you the thumbs-up,he,in fact,________.A.shows his rudeness to you B.shows his anger to youC.expresses his satisfaction to you D.expresses his worries about youDWhen an ant dies, other ants take it out of the nest, often within an hour after its death. This behavior interests scientists and they wonder how ants know for sure—and so soon—that another ant is dead. One scientist recently came up with a way to explain this ant behaviour. Dong-Hwan Choe is a biologist, a scientist who studies animals and plants. He found that ants have a chemical on the outside of their bodies that signals to other ants, “I'm dead—take me away”when it is dead. But there's a question to answer: As we know, if an ant is dead, it stops moving. But when an ant is sleeping or knocked unconscious, it is also not moving. However, other ants don't move the living ant out of the nest. How do they know this ant is not dead? Choe found that ants have another chemical on their bodies, which tells nearby ants something like, “Wait—I'm not dead yet”when it is not dead. Choe suspects that when an ant dies, the chemical that says, “Wait I'm not dead yet”quickly goes away. When other ants detect the“dead”chemical without the“not dead yet”chemical, they move away the body.To test his theory , Choe and his team put different chemicals on ants. When the scientists used the “I'm dead”chemical, other ants quickly moved the treated ant away. When the scientists used the“Wait—I'm not dead yet”chemical, other ants left the treated ant alone. Choe believes this behavior shows that the“not dead yet”chemical overrides (超越) the“dead”chemical when picked up by other ants. And that when an ant dies, the “not dead yet”chemical fades away. Other nearby ants then detect the remaining“dead”chemical and remove the body from the nest.Understanding this behavior can help scientists figure out how to stop ants from invading new places and causing problems.32. What is the function of the first paragraph?A. Introducing the background of the passage.B. Leading the following paragraphs.C. Showing the main idea of the passage.D. Giving a summary of the passage.33. From the passage we learn that Choe .A. has a great interest in the ways ants communicate with each otherB. was the first to observe the ant removal behaviourC. built his theory with other biologistsD. did more than one experiment on ants34.
