九十年代初开始的课程教材改革，英语教学开始形成“导入，巩固和运用”的
任务的五个要素
表达意义是首要目的学习者需要解决某个交际问题学习者所做的事情要与现实生活中的某
些活动有联系对完成任务的评价要以结果为依据
教材鼓励学生积极参与各项语言的实践活动，在各种情景中参与各项task（任务）、 activity（活动）、 project （项目），提倡“learning by doing(用中学、学中用)”，体会语言的工具性、交际性、和社会性。教材要求教师不仅传授语言知识，更强调听、说、读、写、语言技能的训练和培养；而且要求发展智力，培养健康情感。培养学生解决实际问题的能力，发挥创造，进行合作。整个学习过程是一个 “自主、探究、合作”的过程。它要求学生即
考虑当今的生活，更要考虑学生的未来生活，要考虑为今后的社会生活具备的各种知识、能力和素质。教材要求教师将语言教学与其它学科相结合，这里包括历史、地理、自然科学艺术等等。
教材的编排体系: block-building approach

区别任务和练习
任务是一种活动，但活动并不都是任务。听课文录音，朗读课文，抄写单词：没有学生的思考过程，也没有明显得出某种结论或者结果，而只是一种语言操练形式。句型转换，词义配对，师生问答：有学生的思考过程，也能得出结果，但是学生并没有真实使用语言（运用语言表达思想）。
老师编写天气预报，要求学生听，并记下来：学生听和记的能力得到了操练，但学生只重复别人说过的话或表达过的意思，没有经过思考，得出结论。
3p（presentation, practice, production）教学模式，
开始重视语言运用（production)。
什么是任务型教学
任务型教学是指在英语课堂教学中让学生用英语完成各种真实的生活、学习、工作等任务，将课堂教学的目标真实化，任务化，从而培养其运用英语的能力。
