1953年诺贝尔文学奖得主。
20世纪30年代，丘吉尔在德国纳粹势力急剧膨胀、战争危机日益严重的情况下，不断提醒政府和公众注意英国国防实力有被德国超过的危险，反对对德国采取绥靖政策，二战爆发后，于1939年9月3日出任海军大臣。
1940年5月10日德军闪击西欧当日，出任英国战时内阁首相兼第一财政大臣、国防大臣和保守党下院领袖，他以其坚强意志和必胜信心，领导英国及英联邦国家人民进行反法西斯战争，在不列颠之战中击败德国空军，迫使希特勒放弃进攻英国的企图，使英国成为反法西斯抵抗运动的大本营和解放欧洲的反攻基地。
他团结一切反法西斯力量，借助美国的实力重返欧洲大陆，彻底击败轴心国。
三、课文讨论(一)一次成功的演讲，是对一种情境恰当和有效的回应。
丘吉尔是在什么情境下发表这个演讲的?当德军还在西线作战、不列颠之战正在紧张进行之时，希特勒将视线开始转向东线，盯住东南欧和苏联广大国土和财富。
1940年9月27日，法西斯在柏林签定了《德、意、日三国同盟条约》，正式结成三国轴心军事同盟，妄图奴役全世界，加快战争进程。
在德国的威逼利诱下，从40年11月20日到41年6月1日，希特勒德国已经控制欧洲14国，即奥、捷、波、丹、挪、卢、荷、比、法、匈、罗、保、南、希。
并以这些国家的人力物力资源，造成进攻苏联时的巨大优势。
在1941年6月22日德国突然袭击苏联的当天晚上，英国民众守在收音机旁，聆听丘吉尔作的广播演讲。

希特勒是个十恶不赦、杀人如麻、欲壑难填的魔鬼；而纳粹制度除了贪得无厌和种族统治外，别无主旨和原则。
它横暴凶悍，野蛮侵略，为人类一切形式的卑劣行径所不及。
过去的一切，连同它的罪恶，它的愚蠢和悲剧，都一闪而逝了。
我看见俄国士兵站在祖国的大门口，守卫着他们的祖先自远古以来劳作的土地。
我看见他们守卫着自己的家园，他们的母亲和妻子在祈祷──啊，是的，有时人人都要祈祷，祝愿亲人平安，祝愿他们的赡养者、战斗者和保护者回归。
我们只有一个目标，一个惟一的、不可变更的目标。
我们决心要消灭希特勒，肃清纳粹制度的一切痕迹。
