Unit 3 A taste of En glish humouri •阅读理解A(2017课标全国n ,B)I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy andthe Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn ' t want me for thefilm —it wan ted somebody as well known as Paul —he stood up for me. I don ' t know how many people would have done that; they would have liste ned to their age nts or the studio powers. The friendship that grew out of the experienee of making that film and The Sting four yearslater had its root in the fact that although there was an age differenee, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft(技艺)and focused on digginginto the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of America n actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other —but always with an un derly ing affectio n. Those were also at the core(核心、)of our relati on ship off thescree n.We shared the belief that if you ' re fortun ate eno ugh to have success, you should putsomething back —he with his Newman ' s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn ' t see each other all that regularly, but shari ng that brought us together. We supported each other finan cially and by show ing up at even ts.I last saw him a few mon ths ago. He ' d bee n in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we did n ' t talk about it. Ours was a relati on ship that did n ' t n eeda lot of words.I. Why was the studio un willi ng to give the role to the author at first?A. Paul Newma n wan ted it.B. The studio power s did n ' t like his age nt.C. He was n' t famous eno ugh.D. What is the author ' s purpose in writing the text?A. To show his love of films.B. To remember a friend.C. To introduce a new movie.D. Humor has been evaluated by many great minds such as Thomas Hobbes, who disliked humor, “ Laughter is nothi ng else but sudden glory arising from some sudden thought of feeling far better than others. ” He thought humor to bea negative quality of human narrow-mindedness.However, Mordechai Gordon, Ph.D. of Education, insists, “ Humor allows us to view the world f rom an angle that is amusing rather than serious. ” I agree with Gordon. Learning to lookat the world through humor is important. In the United States, every four years an election occurs. Without humor as a way to express their feelings, how else would Americans keep from clawing their eyes out and going the way of lemming?Television shows like“ The Daily Show ” have become important parts of American culture. They are mothering the masses by metaphorically (隐喻地) airplane-ing politics intoour mouths. They make politics fun.Of course, politics is only one type of humor. Social humor helps people through the twists and turns of the human condition. American pop culture promotes an unhealthy self-image. On the topic of self-image, Hari Kondabolu stands out. He has a joke about the popular musical group “The Pussycat Dolls ”, describing their hitsong “Don' t Cha ” as a negative representation of women. He points out an obvious offence in American culture.A study from Loyola Un iversity of Maryla nd has show n that humor is one determ ining factorfor selecting a mating partner. Amongst other things, mates look for an outstanding funny bonein a potential partner.Of course, humor is not always used for good purposes. Humor can be lin ked to vulgarity(庸俗)and racism, but, like everything else, it has potential to unite humanbeings by allowing us to laugh at ourselves, our failures and our connection with one ano ther.Though life may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have to do is look in the mirrorat my in creased wrin kles (皱纹)to know that there is a comedy out there that even Chapl in was n' t aware of.With that in mind, remember to laugh with huma nity and sometimes at huma ni ty.5. Unit 3 A taste of English humourⅠ.阅读理解When Danny Wallace, 26, got bored, he put an ad on the world wide web reading simply,“Join Me. Send a passport photo.” A year and a half later his east London flat is the headquarters for a global internet-based “club” whose members carry out good deeds for strangers every Friday. It's not common for people in London to talk to strangers. If you see someone struggling with something, part of the brain goes “I want to help”. But the trained part of the brain says,“They will think you are mad or going to mug them”, so you walk away.Join Me now has about 3,000 members around the world who do an act of kindness every Friday. For example, I'm usually out on Friday so I go for one of the standard acts—the unexpected cup of coffee. You might be sitting in a cafe and see an old man in the corner drinking coffee or tea, and you walk up with another cup of whatever they are drinking, and say,“I've bou ght you a coffee” and walk away. It's a pleasure to see the look of surprise on their faces. There can be some suspicion, but I think that was mostly in the early days when I didn't know how to do it properly. I would walk up quite nervously like I was doing something wrong a nd I didn't know when to leave. In the end, I learned through trial and error. Sometimes it worked, other times it didn't. I discovered that you have to walk up with confidence and humour and not “get in their faces”. You say,“This is for you”, then you go. It's hit-and-run kindness. And there is no point in doing it half-heartedly. You've got to do it because you really mean it.Join Me is without geographical boundaries, but there are quite a few members in London, and such stories about things happen on the underground or on the buses. One lady got on the bus and put a £10 note down and said,“That's for me and the next nine people.” So at every stop, anyone who got on was told it was paid for.A lot of people were doing this sort of thing anyway. For them it's an excuse or reason to do something nice for a complete stranger, and it gives them the confidence to walk up and start chatting.1.When Londoners see someone in trouble, they .A.often give a handB.stop and ask questionsC.pretend not to have seen itD.telephone the police2.According to the passage, members of Join Me often .A.put an advertisement on the worldwide webB.go out and make friends with strangersC.do an act of kindness every FridayD.buy coffees for the strangers3.The underlined expression in the third paragraph possibly means .A.finding something very difficultB.doing something without much effortC.making a few mistakesD.experimenting to get the right result4.Which would be the best title for the passage?A.Hit-and-run KindnessB.History of Join MeC.Danny Wallace and Join MeD.Why not Join MeOne day the employees of a large company in St.Louis,Missouri returned from their lunch break and were greeted with a sign on the front door. The sign said,“Yesterday the person who has been hindering(阻碍) your growth in this company passed away.We invite you to join the funeral in the room that has been prepared in the gym.”At first everyone was sad to hear that one of their colleagues had died, but after a while they started getting curious about who this person might be.The excitement grew as the employees arrived at the gym to pay their last respects.Everyone wondered:“Who is this person that was hindering my progress?Well, at least he’s no longer here.”One by one the employees got clos er to the coffin(棺材) and when they looked inside it they became speechless. They stood over the coffin, shocked and in silence,as if someone had touched the deepest part of their soul. There was a mirror inside the coffin.Everyone who l ooked inside it could see himself. There was also a sign next to the mirror that said:“There is only one person who can set limits to your growth:it is YOU.”You are the only person who can revolutionize(彻底改变) your life. You are the only person who can influence your happiness, your realization and your success. You are the only person who can help yourself.Your life does not change when your family changes, when your friends change, when your boss changes, and when your company changes.Your life changes when Y OU change, when you go beyond your limiting beliefs, when you realize that you are the only one responsible for your life.5.The writer’s purpose in writing the article is to tell us that_______.A.the harder we work, the more successful we will becomeB.our work and life are closely connected with othersC.changing our lives is up to ourselvesD.we will have a better future if people do not hinder our development6.People were speechless when they looked inside the coffin because_______.A.there was nothing but a mirror insideB.they could see their own souls insideC.their closest colleague lay insideD.what was inside was not hing at all7.Who probably wrote the sign on the front door?A.The company boss.B.A worker who liked to make fun of others.C.The director in charge of production.D.A worker who wanted to teach others a lesson.8.What can we conclude from the article?A.The employees went to the gym to join the funeral.B.The lesson the employees learned would influence them greatly.C.The employees’lives depended on the attitude of their b oss.D.The employees got angry after the funeral.Ⅱ.语法填空On a diet? Unit 3 A taste of English humourⅠ.阅读理解A(2017·大连高三双基测试)A new “health” trend in Hong Kong sees women staring straight at the sun in the belief that it will replace their needs for food and even improve their vision and sleep quality, reports Oriental Daily News. The women reportedly head to the Sam Ka Village beach every evening and take off their shoes before setting their phone timers and stand to stare at the sunset —some using an umbrella to protect their skin. The concept of “sun eating” is about consuming the sun's solar energy instead of food and they believe by doing so it can reduce the body's needs. Some of the women choose to wear pinhole glasses to limit the UV rays getting to their eyes and causing permanent damage. Some of the sungazers stress they are doing it for health reasons, not weight loss.“We practice sungazing as a substitute for eating. Some of us who have finished the practice now eat less, and others don't have to eat at all,” one woman said. She said they start by looking at the sun for up to 10 seconds on the first day, adding 10 seconds every day until they reach 44 minutes by the ninth month of practice.Hou Xiangjun,a skin specialist,is concerned about the rising trend, saying the high UV degree and water reflection are leading to far too much UV light absorption.“Even if painted with sunscreen(防晒霜) they can only stop five to six percent of the damage;an umbrella or a cap can only take 1020 percent and long exposure will increase the risk of serious skin cancer,” she said.Eye experts are also concerned that it will cause some eye diseases.【语篇解读】本文讲述了一些香港女性的一种新的“健康”趋势。

Unit 3 A taste of English humourⅠ.阅读理解(2017·厦门质检)导学号 42492401A culture's values can be mirrored by its humor.Humor has been evaluated by many great minds such as Thomas Hobbes, who disliked humor,“Laughter is nothing else but sudden glory aris ing from some sudden thought of feeling far better than others.” He thought humor to be a negative quality of human narrowmindedness. However, Mordechai Gordon, Ph.D of Education, insists, “Humor allows us to view the world from an angle that is amusing ra ther than serious.” I agree with Gordon.Learning to look at the world through humor is important. In the United States, every four years an election occurs.Without humor as a way to express their feelings, how else would Americans keep from clawing their eyes out and going the way of lemming?Television shows like “The Daily Show” have become important parts of American culture. They are mothering the masses by metaphorically (隐喻地) airplaneing politics into our mouths. They make politics fun.Of course, politics is only one type of humor.Social humor helps people through the twists and turns of the human condition.American pop culture promotes an unhealthy selfimage. On the topic of selfimage, Hari Kondabolu stands out.He has a joke about the popular musical g roup “The Pussycat Dolls”,describing their hit song“Dont Cha”as a negative representation of women. He points out an obvious offence in American culture.A study from Loyola University of Maryland has shown that humor is one determining factor for selecting a mating partner.Amongst other things, mates look for an outstanding funny bone in a potential partner.Of course, humor is not always used for good purposes.Humor can be linked to vulgarity (庸俗) and racism, but, like everything else, it has potential to unite human beings by allowing us to laugh at ourselves, our failures and our connection with one another.Though life may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have to do is look in the mirror at my increased wrinkles(皱纹)to know that there is a comedy out there that even Chaplin wasn't aware of.With that in mind, remember to laugh with humanity and sometimes at humanity.文章大意:一种文化的价值能通过其幽默感表现出来。
