英语泛读教程2第三版课文翻译unit13
The policeman on the beat moved up the avenue
impressively. The impressiveness was habitualand not for show,
for spectators were few.The time was barely 10 o'clock at night,
but chilygusts of wind with a taste of rain in them had well nigh
depeopled the streets.
一个执勤的警察正沿街巡逻,很认真,他一直都这样认真,并不是做给谁看的。差不多是晚上十点了,街上行人寥寥无几,冷风飕飕地吹着,有种雨水的味道。
Trying doors as he went, twirling his club with many
intricate and artful movements, turningnow and then to cast his
watchful eye adown the pacific thoroughfare, the officer, with

guardian of the peace. The vicinitywas one that kept early
hours. Now and then you might see the lights of a cigar store
or of anall-night lunch counter; but the majority of the doors
belonged to business places that had longsince been closed.
Unit 13
Main Idea
The text mainly tells us a story happened to a Chinese couple living in French Guadeloupe.
They lived in a world where Chinese custom and culture are not well taken notice of. The author
recalled the happiness of the lunar new years she’d been through in her hometown when she was
young, and decided to create a Caribbean Spring Festival in this western culture dominated island.
The whole celebration was imbued with fun and happiness and a kind of feeling that had been lost
for more than 20 years. They’ve even been invited to give talks on Chinese culture. This made
them feel the urge to learn more about their motherland.
