Sort of.My husband and I were recently in Egypt, where the temperature was a bit warm for my tiny princess self. So, we left Egypt. Back home, my dearest friends struggled with health stuff, with family craziness...The game of life is hard, and a lot of us are playing hurt.I ache for the world but naturally I’m mostly watching the Me Movie, where balance and strength are beginning to fail. What can we do as the creaking elevator of age slowly arrive? The main solution is to get outside every day, ideally with friends. Old friends — even thoughts of them — are my comfort.Recently I was walking along a beach with Neshama. We go back 50 years. She is 84, short and strong. Every so often, she bent down somewhat tentatively (踌躇地) and picked up small items into a small cloth bag.“What are you doing?”“I’m picking up micro litter. I try to help where I can.”I reminded her of an old story. A great warhorse comes upon a tiny sparrow (麻雀) lying on its back with its feet in the air, eyes tightly shut with effort. The horse asks it what it’s doing.“I’m trying to help hold back the darkness.”The horse laughs loudly, “That is so funny. What do you weigh?”And the sparrow replies, “One does what one can.”This is what older age means. We do what we can.We continued our walk. Neshama bent tentatively to pick up bits of litter and started to slip, but I caught her and we laughed. We are so physically vulnerable in older age, but friendship makes it all a rowing machine for the soul. We can take it, as long as we feel and give love, and laugh gently at ourselves as we fall apart. We know by a certain age the great lie in our life — if you do or achieve this or that, you will be happy and rich. No. Love and service make us rich.4. What does the author say about her present life?A.She leads a balanced life. B.She enjoys meeting old friends.C.She is really into movies. D.She struggles with family crises.5. What largely determines happiness in older age according to the author?A.Achieving important life goals. B.Enjoying life as you can.C.Living a life of love and service. D.Loving what is being done.Researchers say a new electrical device placed in three paralyzed patients has helped them walk again. The lower bodies of the three patients were left paralyzed after they suffered spinal (脊柱的) cord injuries. But a device implanted in the spinal cord was able to send electrical signals to the muscles to permit them to stand, walk and exercise.Scientists have discovered that neurons—which receive and send signals for muscle movements—often still work in injured patients with serious spinal cord injuries. However, past research into spinal cord injuries has centered on the stimulation of neurons. Now in the latest experiment led by Gregoire Courtine and Jocelyne Bloch of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, three paralyzed men were implanted a new electrical device designed to copy an action of the brain, in which it sends signals to the spinal cord that result in muscle movement. When the spinal cord receives the brain signals, it stimulates a collection of nerve cells that can activate different muscles. The researchers reported that all three patients who got the spinal cord implants were able to take their first steps within an hour after receiving them. Over the next six months, the patients regained the ability to take part in more advanced walking activities, the study found. They were also able to ride bicycles and swim in community settings.Unlike other attempts to help paralyzed patients walk by stimulating nerves through the back of the spine, Courtine said that his team redesigned the devices so signals would enter the spine from the sides. This method permits more direct targeting and activation of spinal cord areas, he said. The team then developed artificial intelligence (AI) systems linked to the device. The AI controls electrodes on the device to send signals to stimulate individual nerves that control muscles needed for walking and other activities. However, because the patients muscles were weak from not being used, they needed help with supporting their weight, the researchers said. It also took some time for them to learn to work with the technology. Still,Bloch said, “The more they train, the more they start lifting their muscles, the more fluid it becomes.”8. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?A.Neurons in paralyzed patients can’t work.B.Paralyzed men recovered using a new device.C.The new device can imitate the brain to send signals.D.Stimulating the neurons is the focus of the latest research.9. How does the new device stimulate the spinal cord areas more directly?A.By using the AI system. B.By sending the signals to the brain.C.By making signals enter the spine from the sides. D.By stimulating nerves through the back of the spine.10. Which can best describe Bloch’s idea in the last paragraph?A.Practice makes perfect. B.It’s hard to please all.C.Every garden has its weeds. D.Put the cart before the horse.11. What is the purpose of this text?A.To introduce the findings of a recent research.B.To report the consequence of spinal cord injuries.C.To recommend a treatment for paralyzed patients.D.To compare a recent research with other previous researches.Hiring processes can be thought of as a battle between integrity and dishonesty. You might imagine this is a simple fight between truth-seeking firms and self-promoting candidates and to a certain extent it is .But companies themselves are prone (有倾向的) to bend reality out of shape in ways that are self-defeating.Start with the obvious wrongdoers: job applicants. When it comes to writing the resume (简历),they tend to massage (美化) reality into the most appealing shape possible .Everyone beyond a certain level of experience is a transformational leader personally responsible for generating millions income; the world economy would be about 15 times bigger than it actually is if all such claims were true. The average British spends four and a half hours a day watching TV and online videos. But each average job candidate is an enthusiast for public welfare, using their spare time only for worthy purposes, like volunteering in soup kitchens. But the tendency to stretch the truth infects companies as well as applicants. The typical firm will write a job description that invariably describes the work environment as fast-paced and innovative, and then lays out a set of improbable requirements for the ideal candidate someone who almost by definition does not exist. Sometimes, the requirements include an ability to go back and change the course of history.Too few firms offer an accurate account of what a position actually involves in their job previews, which are supposed to give prospective employees a genuine sense of the negatives and positives ofthe job, as well as a clear idea of the company’s corporate culture. One effective strategy is to lay out in text or video what a typical day in the role would look like.Such honesty can be its own reward. Research has long suggested that realistic job previews lead to lower turnover and higher employee satisfaction. A paper in 2011 by David Earnest of Towson University and his co-authors concluded that favourable perceptions of the organization's honesty are the best explanation for why. So a process designed to uncover the truth about job applicants would run a lot more smoothly if firms were also honest about themselves.12. Why are “leader” and “enthusiast ” menti oned in paragraph 2?A.To present a rule. B.To give examples.C.To make a comparison. D.To explain a phenomenon.13. What does the underlined word “stretch” in paragraph 3 mean?A.Overturn. B.Overstate. C.Overlook. D.Overestimate. 14. What are job previews expected to be like in paragraph 4?A.They show a position as it is.B.They are made either in text or video.C.They are favorable for bigger firms.D.They mainly contain negatives of a job.15. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A.Pains and gains of employees.B.Dishonest behavior of companies.C.How to be more appealing in hiring.D.How to get the lying out of hiring.Learning disorders, such as ADHD, dyscalculia, auditory processing disorder, and dysgraphia, can si gnificantly impact a person’s life. 16 In fact, it’s been shown to impact about 20% of the world’s population, or 1 in 5 people. And it’s even more common among people who are already struggling with other learning disorders, affecting some 80% to 90% of them.Dyslexia is a brain-based learning disorder that affects how people process written language, especially in reading, writing and spelling. People with dyslexia may struggle with decoding words, matching letters with sounds, reversing or transposing (使调换顺序) letters or words, remembering what they’ve read or doing math. 17 Complicating matters, dyslexia can also affect other mental health challenges. It is documented that children with dyslexia are more subject to behavioral or emotional conditions, including anxiety and depression. One reason for this is that social withdrawal and self-esteem problems can arise from someone’s inability to perform in comparison to their peers.18 Environmental influences such as growing up in a household where readi ng isn’t encouraged or supported can contribute to its development. Boys are more likely to have reading difficulty than girls due to certain gender-related factors. 19 According to relative research, dyslexia occurs in up to 68% of identical twins of individuals with dyslexia and up to 50% of individuals with a first-degree relative with dyslexia.Regardless of its causes, dyslexia is a condition that can be diagnosed by a mental health professional and treated and supported through many helpful and proven interventions. Despite the struggles associated with dyslexia, it doesn’t impact a person’s intelligence or creativity. 20I often helped at Grandma’s restaurant on weekends.
