2015.05.09Part I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D, You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Babies who are breast-fed may be more likely to be successful in life, a new study published Tuesday suggests. The study followed more than 3,000 babies into adulthood in Brazil. The researchers found those who were breast-fed scored slightly higher in intelligence tests in their 30s, stayed in school longer and earned more money than those who were given formula(配方奶粉).“Breast-feeding not only has short-term benefits, but also breast-feeding has long-term benefits, "says Bernardo Lessa Horta of the Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil, who led the study being published in The Lancet Global Health.(76) Doctors have long known that breast-feeding can be good for a baby’s health. This is especially true in poor countries, where water can be contaminated. For instance, a baby given formula in developing countries is 14 times more likely to die in the first six months than one who’s breast-fed. In the U.S., some research has suggested that breast-feeding may raise a baby’s IQ(智商)by a few points. But a recent study with siblings(兄弟姐妹)found little advantage to breast-feeding.Horta says these previous studies didn’t follow children into adulthood to see if breast-feeding had long-term effects. So Horta analyzed data collected from 3,493 volunteers he and his colleagues have been following since birth. They are now in their 30s. First, the researchers gave the subjects IQ tests. Those who were breast-fed for 12 months or more had IQ test scores that were 3.76 points higher than those who were breast-fed for less than one month, the team found. When Horta and his colleagues looked at how much education the subjects had gotten and how much money they were making, they also found a clear difference: Those who were breast-fed the longest stayed in school for about an extra year and had monthly salaries that were about a third higher.1. Her mother was once a slave in a rich woman’s house. When Maggie was very young, a thief killed her father. Her family was impoverished, so Maggie's mother started doing laundry in her home.Maggie had to help her. She washed clothes every day, but she continued to go to school. She was a very good student, especially in math. After Maggie graduated from high school, she got a job as a teacher. In 1886, she married Armistead Walker. They had two sons and Maggie stayed home to care for them. She also volunteered to help a social organization called the Order of St. Luke. This organization helped African Americans take care of the sick and bury the dead. Maggie Walker loved the work of the organization. The organization believed that African Americans should take care of each other.Over the years, Maggie Walker had more and more responsibilities with the organization. In 1895, she suggested that St. Luke begin a program for young people.(77) This program became very popular with schoolchildren. In 1899, Walk became Grand Secretary Treasurer of the St. Luke organization. However, because she was a woman, she received less than half the salary of the man who had the job before her.The Order of St. Luke had a lot of financial difficulties when Walker took over. It had a lot of unpaid bills and only $31.61 in the bank. But soon Maggie Walker changed all of that. (78) Her idea was to get new members to join the Organization. Now, under his leadership, the city is preparing to end the ban. It will be replaced by a policy that allows phones inside schools but tells students to keep them packed away during class. Many schools have a rule about enforcing the ban that says, “If we don't see it, we don’t know about it.” That means teachers are OK with students bringing in cell phones, as long as they stay out of sight and inside bags and pockets. But at the 88 city schools with metal detectors, die ban has been strictly enforced. The detectors were installed to keep weapon out of schools, but the scanners (扫描器)can also detect cell phones. So students at these schools must leave their phones at home or pay someone to store it for them. The ban was put into place in 2007 under mayor Michael Bloomberg. Ending the ban will also likely end an industry that has sprung up near dozens of the schools that enforce the ban. Workers in vans(厢式货车)that resemble food tracks store teens’ cell phones and Other devices for a dollar a day,(79) Critics of the ban say cell phones are important safety devices for kids during an emergency. They also say that enforcement of the ban is uneven and discriminatory. Where the ban is enforced, it puts a disadvantage on students who can’t afford to pay to store their phones. Before putting an official end to the cell-phone ban, city education officials are working on creating a new policy. 全国英语等级考试第三级PUBLIC ENGLISH TEST SYSTEM (PETS)LEVEL 32015年9月SECTION II Reading(50 minutes)Part ADirections :Read the following two texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A,B, C or D. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.Text 1Five-year-old Elia arrived at school with a big box of colored pencils. Her friend, Anna, offered exchange her set of markers for the brand-new pencils. Elia agreed, but soon discovered that the markers were dried up. “That‟ s not fair!” cried Elia to her teacher. “I want my new pencils back. “ After some tears and negotiation, the teacher helped the girls set things right by returning the items to their original owners.Later that day, at story time, the teacher shared the picture book classic A Bargain for Frances. Though the conflict in the story is just over a broken tea set, the message about fair play was not lost on the children. The bookwas helpful in exploring a small, yet significant, life lesson.Stories are vital to the way we process and experience life events and the feelings that surround us. The ability to create, share, and respond to stories is one of the vital characteristics of being human. In fact, the human brain is programmed to see patterns and become fascinated in the plot development of stories, finally storing them in long-term memory. As a result, the brain is a remarkably effective processor of stories, both real and fictional.High-quality picture books are a good blend of art and literature that attracts kids‟ imaginatio n and communicates an idea in an effective way. These books are perfect teaching tools, as they deal with the powerful emotions that kids feel, model effective coping strategies, and present complex concepts in appropriate ways. In addition, according to brain research, the picture book complements words with what leaves the most permanent impression: images. The pictures in books are distinctive from the fleeting images kids see on television in that they remain on the page, ready to be revisited, touched, and commented upon.Whether we share stories about families, historical events, or emotions, stories are a way to m up life‟s memorable moments and lasting lessons. We can control the power of literature and use it to develop positive character in young .kids by reading often, choosing suitable books, and enjoying stories together.26. Elia cried “That‟s not fair!” as she thought that she was ______.[A] cheated by her friend [B] defeated by her friend[C] ignored by her teacher [D] scolded by her teacher27. A Bargain for Frances is intended to teach kids how to______.[A] play fair in life [B] defeated by her friend[C] ignored by her teacher [D] write a message28. According to the text, stories can help kids______.[A] realize their potential [B] improve their memory[C]concentrate on reading [D] understand the human world29. In comparison with pictures in books, television images________.[A] are frequently commented on[B] stay temporarily with children[C] blend art and literature vividly[D] communicate ideas effectively30. The power of literature can help kids develop their________.[A] positive character [B] interest in history[C] passion for stones [D] learning strategiesText 2We have heard a lot about the health benefits of tea, especially green tea. It is high in poly-phenols, compounds with, strong antioxidant activity that in test-tube and animal models show anti-cancer and heart-protective effects. Good clinical studies are few, however, and although physicians telltheir patients to drink green tea, there hasn‟t been any definite proof of the value of that advice.A team of Japanese researchers was able to link green tea consumption with decreased mortality from many causes-including heart disease. The researchers tracked 40,530 healthy adults ages 40 t0 79 in a region of northeastern Japan where most people drink green tea, following them for up to 11 years. Those who drank five or more cups of green tea a day had significantly lower mortality rates than those who drank less than one cup a day. There were also fewer deaths from cardiovascular disease. But no such association was seen with deaths from cancer. Nor was consumption of oolong or black tea connected with any decrease in mortality. Those teas are easier to be combined with oxygen in processing, which not only darkens the color of the leaves and changes their flavor but also reduces their polyphenol content.Coffee is more complicated. It has received both gold stars and black marks in medical literature. It, too, contains antioxidants, although they are less well studied than tea polyphenols. Evidence for the health benefits of coffee is growing, however. A group of investigators from Finland, Italy and the Netherlands reports that coffee seems to protect against age-related decline in mental capacity. The scientists studied 676 healthy men born from 1900 to 1920 and followed them for 10 years, using standardized measures of brain function. Their conclusion: the men who consumedcoffee had significantly less decline in mental capacity than those who didn‟ t. Three cups a day seemed to provide the most protection.Population studies like those help us form assumptions about relationships between dietary habits and long-term health. We still have to test our suppositions in controlled conditions, and measure the effects of coffee and tea on various systems of the body.31. Physicians often tell their patients to drink green tea because______.[A] its medical value has been proved[B] it is believed to be good for one‟s health[C] it has long since been used clinically[D] its effectiveness has been shown in animals32. The Japanese study seems to have confirmed the positive effect of green tea on ______.[A] young adults [B] Asian people[C] patients with cancer [D] patients with heart disease .33. The text indicates that black tea differs from green tea in that_______.[A] it can retain the color of its leaves[B] it can reduce cancer-related deaths[C] it contains less polyphenol content[D] it is stronger in flavor than the latter34. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.Jennifer:In your article about online shopping being the newest and easiest way to shop, you said that computers will replace shopping malls sooner or later because they make buying things faster and cheaper. But don‟t you think that the entire point of shopping is to spend leisure time with friends while doing something necessary. Shopping is not just a quick task. It is, in fact, an entire way of life.Pau1:I am a great collector of all manner of hard-to-find items such as out-of-print books and antiques. Purchasing in physical stores would mean round-the-world travel and years of effort. I can get the same result in a few hours on eBay, and often at bargain prices .I am quite well-off, but buy very few consumer items available in regular shops. I have many friends and acquaintances with the same approach.Mike:My wife buys online often. I have not heard complaints or dissatisfaction. She can compare with differe nt online vendors‟ prices after she has decided what she wants. It‟s delivered to the door, a big time savings and gas savings. If I need something, I check online first and see what it costs and then decide where to buy, local stores or online. Online has the advantage most of the time.Henry:Virtually all online stores make you register. But, I don‟ t need another username and password to remember. I will only buy online if I cannot find something locally. Even though shipping is fast, I‟ d rather drive across town and pay more to be able to bring home a new gadget the same day. And, most of the time, there is no difference in price between local stores and online stores.Jeff:If you think the prices are the same online as they are locally, you‟re dealing with the wrong online retailers. I‟m an online shopping veteran and I always save quite a bit on my large-dollar purchases. With a little research experience, I‟ve easily saved thousands of dollars over the last several years. Besides, shipping on most i tems is reasonable and you don ‟t even pay taxes 99. 9% of the time. Now match the name of each person (36-40) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements.Statements36.Jennifer [A] I‟ll buy onlin e only when I have to.37.Paul [B]You can enjoy steep discounts with most online sellers.38.Mike [C] I shift between buying on or off line depending on whatsuits me.39.Henry [D] Shopping is not only a necessary task but a sociablepleasure.40.Jeff [E] Online selling helps to satisfy my special needs in buying.[F] Buying online is far from being as good as it is boastedto be .[G] Buying online can save you a lot only if you find theright online sellers.Part CDirections:Read the following text from which five sentences have been removed, choose from the sentences A-G the most suitable one to fill each numbered gap in the text (41-45). I followed her to her truck and bought a kilo. On credit, of course. 41 “Pay me whenever you like,” said Effie, climbing back into her truck. All pretense of payment was dropped when our funds, food and fuel decreased to alarming lows. Effie came often, always bringing some gift: a jar of peaches or some firewood. There were other generosities. Our baby was not doing well, so Effie financed my wife‟s trip to New York for consultation with a specialist.42 Her income, derived from investments she had made while running an interior decorating shop, had never exceeded $ 200 a month, which she supplemented by selling her apples. But she always managed to help someone poorer.Years passed before I was able to return the money Effie had given me from time to time. She was ill now and had aged rapidly in the last year. “Here, darling,”I said, “is what I owe you.”“Don‟t give it to me all at once,” she said. “ 43 ”“ I think she believed there was magic in the slow discharge of a love debt. The simple fact is that I never repaid the whole amount to Effie, for she died a few weeks later. 44 But a curious thing began to happen.Whenever I saw a fellow human in financial trouble, I was moved to help him. I can‟t afford to do this always, but in the ten years since Effie‟ s death, I have indirectly repaid my debt to her.The oddest part of the whole affair is that people whom I help often help others later on, 45 So the account can never be marked closed, for Effie‟s love will go on in hearts that have never known her.[A] At that time, it seemed that my debt would forever go unsettled.[B] Give your help to those in greater need.[C] Effie was not a rich woman.[D] Effie worked diligently all her life.[E] Cash was the one thing in the world I lacked just then.[F]By now, the few dollars Effie gave me have been multiplied many times.[G] Give it back as I gave it to you---a little at a time.Part DDirections :Read the following text from which 10 words have removed. Part II Reading Comprehension (40 points) Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each of the passages is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center. Passage One Americans this year will swallow 15, 000 tons of aspirin, one of the safest and most effective drugs invented by man. As the most popular medicine in the world today, it is an effective pain reliever. Its bad effects are relatively mild, and it is cheap. Although aspirin was first sold by a German company in 1899, it has been around much longer than that. Hippocrates, in ancient Greece, understood the medical value of the leaves and tree bark which today are known to contain salicylates, the chemical in aspirin. During the 19th century there was a great deal of experimentation in Europe with this chemical, and it led to the introduction of aspirin. By 19l5, aspirin tablets(⽚剂) were available in the United States. For millions of people suffering from arthritis, aspirin is the only thing that works. A small quantity of aspirin (two five-grain tablets) relieves pain and inflammation. It also reduces fever by interfering with some of the body's reactions. Aspirin, in short, is truly the 20th-century wonder drug. On the other hand, it is also the second largest suicide drug and is the leading cause of poisoning among children. It has side effects that, although relatively mild, are largely unrecognized among users. Aspirin is very irritating to the stomach lining, and many aspirin takers complain about upset stomach. There is a right way and a wrong way to take aspirin. The best way is to chew the tablets before swallowing them with water, but few people can stand the bitter taste. Some people suggest crushing the tablets in milk or orange juice and drinking that. 16. This article discusses __________. A. the multiple functions of aspirin B. how and why aspirin was invented C. the history and the features of aspirin D. how to take aspirin properly 17. According to the second paragraph, salicylates is __________. A. leaves and tree barks B. the old name of aspirin C. the name of a US company D. a component of aspirin 18. Which symptom can NOT be treated by aspirin?A. feverB. reactionsC. painD. inflammation 19. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the best way to take aspirin is to take it __________. A. with bitter water B. with orange juice C. in tablet form D. in powder form 20. The author of this article seems to be__________. A. against the use of aspirin B. in favour of aspirin C. doubtful about aspirin D. not interested in aspirin Passage Two Dr. Mary Jo Bane is the associate director of the Center for Research on Women. Her recent study found “surprising evidence of the persistence of American commitments to family life”, which cast doubt on some common myths about American family. Myth 1: The American Family is Dying Because of the Soaring Divorce Rate. According to Dr. Bane’s study, the American family is changing, not dying. It is becoming smaller and the divorce rate is high. But Dr. Bane says that despite the high divorce rate, marriage has never been more popular. The majority of divorced people re-marry, but only 2%marry more than twice. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces arefrom teenage marriages. Depending on the specific situation, there’s often good reason for teenage marriages to break up. Myth 2: Working Mothers are Destroying the Family by Neglecting Their Children. “There’s no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home,” says Dr. Bane. “You have to divide the time into different categories: simple physical function and educational time or development time when a mother plays with the child. So far we haven’t seen the amount of educational or development time vary much, whether or not the mother works outside the home.” In fact, Dr. Bane finds evidence that working mothers, especially in the middle class, try to compensate for working by setting aside time exclusively for their children. “They probably read more to their children and spend more time in planned activities with them than nonworking mothers do.” says Dr. Bane. 21. Dr. Mary Jo Bane’s study seems to suggest that _________. A. Americans are persistent in career B. Americans are serious with their families C. American families are all breaking up D. American families are perfect as usual 22. It can be inferred that the common myths of American family consider family life to be _________. A. in great danger B. quite wonderful C. changing too fast D. very satisfying 23. According to the article, which of the following is true about marriage and divorce? A. Divorced people never consider a second marriage. B. Teenage couples often divorce out of no reason. C. Less and less people plan to get married. D. Very few people have a third or fourth marriage. 24. For the children whose mothers go out to work, __________. A. it is better to have mothers at home B. almost no attention is paid to them C. no less attention is paid to them D. a lot of time is spent playing games pared with n o n w o r k i n g m o t h e r s , w o r k i n g m o t h e r s _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ . / p > p b d s f i d = " 1 8 6 " > 0 0 A . s p a r e l e s s t i m e t o s t a y w i t h t h e i r c h i l d r e n / p > p b d s f i d = " 1 8 7 " > 0 0 B . d o m o r e e d u c a t i o n a l a c t i v i t i e s w i t h c h i l d r e n / p > p b d s f i d = " 1 8 8 " > 0 0 C . d o v e r y l i t t l e s i m p l e p h y s i c a l h o u s e w o r k / p > p b d s f i d = " 1 8 9 " > 0 0 D . a v o i d d i s t u r b i n g t h e i r w o r k b y f a m i l y d u t i e s 0 P a s s a g e T h r e e 0 0 C r i m e h a s i t s o w n c y c l e s , a m a g a z i n e r e p o r t e d s o m e y e a r s a g o . The 26 , for instance, from 1960 to 1969 will be 27 by many as a period of social and political unrest in America. 28 this time, many people despaired 29 the music favored by the American teenagers. 30 , we must now admit that the music they loved was 31 a sign of the period and a 32 of the tensions and changes that were 33 American society. In the early sixties,34 about social justice and equality were 35 by the song “Blowing in the Wind” which 36 the civil rights song “We Shall Overcome”. The conflict concerning military 37 in Vietnam was sung about in 1965 in the 38 song “Eve of Destruction” and in the song “Ballad of the Green Beret”. A few years 39 , a gradual shift in mood became 40 in one of the most popular songs which suggested calmer questions and possible answers even as some pop stars protested loudly 41 the draft. Finally, music as a 42 of the political and social process in America was highlighted at Woodstock, New York, where half a million young people came 43 in 1969 to spend three days listening to songs that spanned the decade. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. Text 1 I'd been living with my wife for eight years and one night “morn” says,“I guess you guys are never gonna get married. I mean, you've been through jail together, you' e living together, but.., oh, forget it.” “Oh, well,” I said, “put it like that and I'll marry your daughter tomorrow.” Actually, I don't know what we were waiting for, except that for a guy it's never the right time to get married. I' m also suspicious of any two people who don' t struggle with that decision. Part of my problem was that I was still lusting in my heart after other ladies. But somehow I knew that I wasn't going to find another woman remotely as great as my soon-to-be wife. It's a good thing my mother-in-law finally spoke up. I finally gathered my courage one day when we were having a picnic, and popped the question. I also gave my wife a big tourist pamphlet about Switzerland. I wasn't taking any chances. She said no. It killed me. I felt sick to my stomach. I lost my appetite. Our dog just stared at me, thinking, “If you're not going to eat your lunch, I will.” Finally, I said, “But the Switzerland trip is yours if you say yes.” “Switzerland,” she said, “is filled with precise, humorless people.” “Maybe I should have suggested Paris?” For a minute it seemed as if my change in travel plans would rate a solid “maybe”. But she said no again. When we woke up the next morning, she told me that she'd slept on my proposal. “I guess I was a little rude to you last night,” she explained. Meanwhile, I' m figuring I' m off the hook for this marriage thing for at least another eight years. I could afford to be generous. “I asked, you said no. It's okay,” I said. I might have looked a little too relieved because later that day she gave me a little box. Inside was a gold watch. On the back was inscribed. “Yes. I've reconsidered.” I liked the watch, so I did the right thing. 46. The reason why the man had waited so long was that he_________. [ A ] didn' t think eight years was long enough [ B ] suspected that husband and wife would often quarrel [ C ] didn' t think he was ready to propose to her [ D ] was waiting for his mother-in-law' s approval 47. The man proposed to the woman because _________. [ A] he realized he could find no other woman better [ B ] he was afraid that the woman might leave him [ C ] he was eager to visit Switzerland with the woman [ D ] he could finally overcome his fear for marriage 48. By saying “I could afford to be generous.” (third paragraph from the bottom) the man implied that he__________. [ A ] wouldn' t care too much if he stayed single [ B ] could take her to a better place than Paris [ C ] was rich enough to support his wife [ D ] didn't care what she thought about his proposal 49. The last sentence “I did the right thing” implied he_________. [ A ] traveled with his wife [ B ] had a successful marriage [ C ] liked the watch very much [ D ] waited for another eight years 50. The best title for this text would be___________. [ A ] How My Mother-In-Law Helped Me [ B ] How I Received a Gold Watch I Liked [ C ] How I Made My Wife Travel With Me [ D ] How I Came to Marry-My Wife Text 2 “Hi there. How's it going?” “Oh, fine. Fine. How about this weather, huh ?” “Well, I guess we can always use the rain.” What's that? This story ? Oh, just a little look at small talk. You know, those seemingly meaningless conversations you have dozens of times a day, Maybe you' re waiting for the elevator. Or in a line at the bank. It all seems pretty trivial. Idle chatter about traffic doesn' t do much more than fill the air with empty words that are quickly forgotten. But you should know that small talk actually has a big place in our lives. Pat Oliver, assistant professor on arts, says that, “Left unchecked, small talk can be an invasion. It's so powerful. It does something to you.” “Everymorning after spending an hour and a half on the freeway I start the day with small talk with my secretary,” Oliver says, “If I don't make small connection with another person, I can' t work.” What causes it? As a rule, you' re either trying to force something into your life, or you' re using conversation as an invisible force field to keep them out. You can be wanting to connect with another person, and small talk is your introduction to more meaningful conversation. The way people use small talk is usually determined by where they happen to be at the time. Take the elevator, for instance. Now there's prime territory. Nobody knows anyone and there's no reason to start a conversation, but invariably, someone does. Making conversation in such peaceful social settings, according to Oliver, “can confirm your territory. It's a way of feeling liked and accepted.” The topics of small talk don't matter. In fact, you don't want anything more taxing than the weather or the traffic. It's non-threatening talk in a threatening situation. However, the rules change quickly when you're with lots of people doing lots of talking. Let's say you're at a party. Now it' s time to use small talk as a way of making others feel more comfortable around you, so you don' t look silly standing by the food table alone all night. 51. “Small talk”, as interpreted by the author,________. [ A ] has no real function in communication at all [ B ] is usually meaningless and therefore useless [ C ] is not as idle as it may seem to be [ D ] is restricted to certain topics only 52. According to the author, small talk is often used ____________. [ A ] to invade other' s private affairs [ B ] to share a secret between intimate friends [ C ] to open and maintain channels of communication [ D ] to protect one' s own privacy 53. According to the author, topics of small talk may include comments on________. [ A ] some political issues [ B ] one' s physical condition [ C ] other' s ways of dress [ D ] the traffic jam 54. Why is small talk described as “non-threatening talk in a threatening situation”? [ A] It is used by people to encourage those who are confronted with danger. [ B ] It is used to show that one is enthusiastic and hospitable. [ C ] It is used to create a more friendly atmosphere and to avoid embarrassment. [ D ] It is used by people to protect others in the threatening situation. 55. According to the author, at a big party, small talk is used with the purpose of_______. [ A ] making both others and yourself feel at ease [ B ] excluding those you don't like from joining you [ C ] keeping your voice low so only your friends can hear you [ D ] comforting those who feel lonelyText 3 Dollars and cents are the basic units of American money. The back of all dollar bills are green (hence “greenbacks”). The commonly used coins are: one cent (penny ), five cents (nickel), 10 cents(dime), and 25 cents (quarter).50 pieces (half dollar) and silver dollars (not really silver anymore) are gaining in usage, while there has been talk of phasing out the penny that's inflation for you. “Always carry plenty of quarters when travelling. Very useful for phones, soda machines, laundry machines, etc.” There is generally no problem in using US dollars in Canada, but this is never possible in reverse. It's useful always to carry small change for things like exact fare buses, but do not carry large sums of cash. Instead keep the bulk of your money in travellers' cheques which can be purchased both in the US and abroad and should be in dollar denominations. The best known cheques are those of American Express, so you will have the least difficulty cashing these, even in out of the way places. Thomas Cook travellers' cheques are also acceptable, especially as lost ones can be reclaimed at some car rental companies. Dollar denomination cheques can be used like regular money. There's no need to cash them at a bank: use them instead to pay for meals, supermarket purchases or whatever. Ten or twenty dollar cheques are accepted like this almost always and you' 11 be given change just as though you'd presented the cashier with dollar bills. Be prepared to show I.D. when you cash your cheques. Credit cards can be even more valuable than travellers' cheques, as they are often used to guarantee room reservations over the phone and are accepted in lieu of deposit when renting a car--indeed without a credit card you may be considered so untrustworthy that not only a deposit but your passport will be held as security too. The major credit cards are VISA, Master Charge and Access, Diners Club and American Express. If you hold a bank card, it could well be worthwhile to increase your credit limit for travel purposes--you should ask your bank manager. 56. Why is it useful to carry enough 25-cent coins with you? [ A ] They can act as small change for the-exact bus fares. [ B ] There is- generally no problem in using them in Canada. [ C ] As a basic unit of money, they are gradually gaining in usage. [ D ] They may come in handy for pay phones or laundry machines. 57. It is not necessary to carry cash instead of dollar travellers' cheques because the latter can be ________. [ A ] used for phones, bus fares and hotel reservations [ B ] used to pay in restaurants and big stores [ C ] used like credit cards, even in remote areas [ D ] exchanged easily, even at car rental companies 58. The phrase ‘in lieu of’ (line 2, paragraph 4) most probably means________. [ A ] on behalf of [ B ] in line with [ C ] with regard to [ D ] instead of 59. Which of the following statements is TRUE? [ A ] Credit cards have more advantages than travellers' cheques. [ B ] Dollar bills are as convenient as credit cards. [ C ] One-cent coins have been withdrawn from circulation. [ D ] You can increase your credit limit as you like. 60. This passage is most probably taken from [ A ] a tourist guide [ B ] a bank brochure [ C ] a booklet about car rental [ D ] a handbook on U.S. currency Part B Directions: Read the texts from a cyber saloon in which five people talked about Tofu (also known as bean curd), a traditional Chinese and Japanese food. For questions 61 to 65, match the name of each person to one of the statements (A to G) that he or she is most likely to say. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET. Jenise: I love peas and beans more than most people, so tofu is a natural choice for me. My Chinese friend Annabelle loves them too, and tells me that soy beans contain an ingredient not present in any other food source, or at least in that concentration, that helps prevent breast cancer. When we share a big bowl of these, we eat with abandon “for medicinal purposes”! I like it plain although there may be many different ways to prepare it and it may cure other diseases. Lee: In fact, I was probably preprogrammed to like it: as a kid one of my favorite books was Toru and the Tofu (hope I' m remembering the title right), a story about a young Tokyo boy, named Toru, who was given the assignment, his first, of going to the neighborhood tofu maker' s by himself and bringing back some fleshly made cubes for dinner. I can still recall Toru' s unique way of getting it home intact ( with a jar filled with water). It all seemed very strange to the five-year old me in semi-rural Southern California. Hoke: It's great in spicy Sichuan style soups, especially with fish, but I like it fried quickly to give a crisp exterior whilst retaining a moist, soft interior. Steaming is another option, with a pork and prawn mince ( with spring onion) on top of each cube. The thing that I love most is ,the texture--really good tofu is just amazing in the mouth, poised as it is between solidity and fluidity. I' m definitely a fan. Nyby: It's sort of weird to me. You go in to one of those “Mock Vegetarian”restaurants only to find everything on the menu “mock”--mock chicken, mock beef, mock pork, etc. Now whatever you order, it' s tofu molded into something that looks like that particular meat. I don't know about you, but if I' m eating a vegetarian I don' t need to go through a fantasy of pretending I' m eating a veal cutlet or a pork chop or a chicken breast. Is this to delude someone, or distract them from thinking they are eating vegetarian food? Robin: Precisely because it is so “tasteless”, I eat. it like a madman: I like the way it picks up the flavors of the dishes it' s served with. I can enjoy it in lots of different cuisine, in moderate quantities in relation to other ingredients in each dish. If you try them and tell me that you don't think they have much flavor, I' 11 have to disagree because that's not true of tofu. The flavor's mild and you can combine that with the hottest spices in the world, which for me illustrates its most endearing attribute. It does a reasonably good job of absorbing a great many flavors. Now match each of the persons (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement. Note: there are two extra statements. Statements 61. 这与C项表述一致.A、B两项曲解了文意.D项“琐谈的话题有严格的限制”,与文章倒数第二段第一句“The topics of small talk don’t matter.”相悖.故选C. 52.C【精析】推理题.由文章倒数第四段第二句话“You Call be waning to connect with another person, and small talks is your introduction to more meaningful conversation.” 文章第三段倒数第三句说“…use them instead to pay for meals.supermarket purchases or whatever.”,其中them 指代checks.
I. Reading comprehensionPassage 1Since its founding in 1948, McDonald's has grown from a family burger (汉堡包) stand to a global fast-food chain, with more than 30,000 locations in 118 countries. With 58 million daily customers worldwide, McDonald’s is now so ubiquitous around the globe that The Economist publishes a global ranking of currencies' purchasing power based on the prices charged at the local McDonald’s, called the Big Mac Index (巨无霸指数).That’s not to say that every nation carries the same menu items: choices vary widely depending on location. Some Asian locations serve fried shrimp in a Big Mac roll, while McDonald’s in India doesn’t serve beef at all, relying instead on burgers made from vegetables, rice and beans. Not everyone in the world has been happy to greet Ronald McDonald when he moves to town. Many see McDonald's as a symbol of American economic and cultural chauvinism (沙文主义), and European nations in particular have viewed American-style fast food as an insult to their national food. A French farmer, Jose Bove, became something of a national hero in 1999 after he and a group of people destroyed a McDonald's under construction to protest globalization and "bad food." Jim then went to a specialschool in Pennsylvania for Native American children. There, he learned to read and write and also began to play sports. Jim was poor, so he left school for two years to earn some money. During this time, he played on a baseball team. (77) The team paid him only $15 a week. He won many awards for his athletic ability, mainly for football. In many games, he scored all or most of the points for his team.In 1912, when Jim Thorpe was 24 years old, he became part of the U. S Olympic team. He competed in two very difficult events: the pentathlon and the decathlon. Both require great ability and strength. The decathlon hasten track and field and filed events, with running, jumping, and throwing contests.People thought it was impossible for an athlete to compete in both the pentathlon and the decathlon. All one has to do is walkby almost any nice gym and no tice all the healthy, sweating, “skinny”members. Sometimes they stare at those of us who are , well, zaftig. It is easy to see the judgment behind their eyes. Who wants to put up with that? Many people are self-conscious of their bodies and feel isolated when joining workout classes or while exercising, especially if they are larger than most of the others in the group. Now the fitness industry is finally paying attention. Popular gyms are catering(迎合) to overweight and weight conscious customers by ded icating areas where the “skinny” people are not allowed. There are even gyms or programs that require members to be at least 50 pounds overweight to participate.Trainers recommended functional fitness as a practical goal, rather than six-pack abs(六块腹肌). (79)They often use text messages to stay in touch with customers.Often at these specialized gyms, the trainers are overweight themselves, or working on their own weight goals, and this can help those people with anxiety caused by poor body image. The equipment has been designed for use by larger people. Wider seats, more cushioning, no mirrors, and tinted(有色的) windows for privacy, are all important changes.(80) Hopefully these types of gyms will successfully grow in numbers in the future.
