It's a poem by John Betjeman about this little girl who gets lost on her way to tennis practice. She wanders into this old outdoor museum village and starts wondering if she went back in time! The little houses and shops with their "shining windows and pumpkin faces" sound so magical. People could instantly video chat with 3D holograms, have smart appliances that did all their chores, and travel through virtual realms. It sounded so awesome and crazy advanced! Part of me hopes we get that level of technology someday, but part of me also thinks it might be a little too much.For the project in this unit, we had to design our own app and present it to the class. I tried writing my name in braille during class – it was tricky but fun. Another inspiring person was Franklin D. Roosevelt, the US President who led America through World War 2 despite being paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Talk about determination!In Unit 2, the name is "The Environment Around Us" and it's all about nature and environmental protection. They're hulking giants! I also learned about the three R's of environmental protection –reduce, reuse and recycle. We did an activity in class where we had to design creative ways to reuse common household items like plastic bottles and cardboard boxes. My partner and I made a really cool robot model!But the environment isn't just about animals, it's also about plants too. I found the section on rainforests fascinating. They are home to over half of all plant and animal species on our planet! But unfortunately, rainforests are being destroyed at an alarming rate. We need to protect these precious habitats. Afterthis unit, I've become much more conscious about not wasting things and reusing items instead of throwing them away.Last but not least, Unit 3 is called "Game is Fun". You bet it is! This unit was jam-packed with awesome texts and activities all about different sports and games. I especially loved reading about the origins of sports like soccer, basketball and tennis. How crazy is that?My highlight from this unit was definitely when we had a mini sports tournament in our English class. This unit was kind of depressing because we learned just how much damage pollution, deforestation, and other human activities have caused to the planet.There were so many new vocabulary terms related to environmental issues that I had to look up, like "greenhouse gases", "carbon footprint", and "ecological balance". The factsand statistics about things like rising sea levels and dwindling animal populations were really alarming.But we also read inspiring examples of young environmental activists like Greta Thunberg who are bravely raising awareness and calling for change. Her speech about her generation's future being stolen away by inaction on climate change gave me chills. I have a much deeper appreciation now for why we need to make serious efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle.For our unit project, we did a trash audit at our school over the course of a week. We sorted through all the garbage to see what types of waste made up the biggest portions. It was pretty gross to dig through all that muck, but it was an eye-opening way to see how much unnecessary waste we produce through things like excessive packaging and food waste.
