It's all about these kids named Margie and Tommy who lived in the future, like in 2157 or something! Can you imagine? They had no teachers and did all their schoolwork from home on computer things called "telebooks." That sounds kind of fun but also kind of boring if you ask me. I like seeing my friends at school!The story is about the kids finding an old book from the 2000s when students went to an actual school building. They think books from back then are amazing. Margie even says "it must have been fun back then!" I agree - doing school with real books and classmates does seem way more fun than just staring at a computer all day.In Unit 2 called "The Open Window", this crazy guy named Framton Nuttel comes to this big country house to rest his "shattered nerves." That's a pretty funny name, right? Framton! Anyway, this girl starts telling him this made-up story about her uncle and these hunters who went tramping off to the bogs and never came back. Framton believes it all and is spooked whenthe uncle shows up later with his hunting buddies covered in mud! It's a silly trick but I felt kind of bad for Framton.My favorite unit so far is Unit 3 - "The Little Girl". It's a poem by John Betjeman about this little girl who gets lost on her way to tennis practice. She wanders into this old outdoor museum village and starts wondering if she went back in time! The little houses and shops with their "shining windows and pumpkin faces" sound so magical. I wish my town had a cute old village like that to explore.At the end, the police find the girl safe and sound after her big imaginative adventure. Phew! The poem has such pretty descriptions like "the wild flowers in the sun" and "sunshine in a chequered square." It reminds me of a fun summer day. But then these scientists found a way to use special micro-organisms to clean up the air and water. By the end, the planet was all green and beautiful again. But she gets greedy and asks for more and more until the comb disappears. It's a nice reminder to appreciate the little things.For the writing section, we had to write a thank you letter to someone important in our life. I wrote mine to my parents to say thanks for all their love and support. I hope they liked it!Unit 3 was titled "Life in Cyberspace" and it was all about technology and the internet. We learned some really fascinating statistics, like there are over 4 billion people online and over 1 billion websites! Mind-blowing, right? This unit also taught us internet safety tips like never sharing personal information, usingstrong passwords, and being careful what you post online. Important stuff that everyone should know.There were a couple funny dialogues of kids talking about their excessive smartphone habits. Like getting caught texting at the dinner table or playing video games super late at night instead of sleeping. I could definitely relate! My parents are always nagging me about that stuff.The reading had a science fiction story that imagined what life might be like in a futuristic, hyper-connected metropolis. People could instantly video chat with 3D holograms, have smart appliances that did all their chores, and travel through virtual realms. It sounded so awesome and crazy advanced! Part of me hopes we get that level of technology someday, but part of me also thinks it might be a little too much.For the project in this unit, we had to design our own app and present it to the class. My app idea was a smart planner that helped you organize your schedule, did your homework for you, and nagged your parents about things instead of the other way around. Today I'm going to tell you all about Units 1, 2 and 3 from our book this semester. Get ready for a fun adventure as I take you through each unit!Unit 1 is called "Outstanding People" and it's sooooo cool! In this unit, we learned about some amazing people who did incredible things. My favorite was Helen Keller. Can you imagine being blind and deaf from such a young age? I can't! But Helen didn't let her disabilities stop her. With the help of her teacher, Annie Sullivan, she learned how to communicate and went on to become a world-famous writer and speaker. Wow!We also read about Louis Braille, the man who invented the braille alphabet so blind people could read. What an awesome idea! I tried writing my name in braille during class – it was tricky but fun. Another inspiring person was Franklin D. Roosevelt, the US President who led America through World War 2 despite being paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Talk about determination!In Unit 2, the name is "The Environment Around Us" and it's all about nature and environmental protection. I loved reading the different texts about incredible animals like blue whales, pandas, and beavers. Did you know blue whales are the largest animals to have ever existed on Earth? They're hulking giants! I also learned about the three R's of environmental protection –reduce, reuse and recycle. We did an activity in class where we had to design creative ways to reuse common household items like plastic bottles and cardboard boxes. My partner and I made a really cool robot model!But the environment isn't just about animals, it's also about plants too. I found the section on rainforests fascinating. They are home to over half of all plant and animal species on our planet! But unfortunately, rainforests are being destroyed at an alarming rate. We need to protect these precious habitats. Afterthis unit, I've become much more conscious about not wasting things and reusing items instead of throwing them away.Last but not least, Unit 3 is called "Game is Fun". You bet it is! This unit was jam-packed with awesome texts and activities all about different sports and games. I especially loved reading about the origins of sports like soccer, basketball and tennis. Can you believe soccer started out as an ancient game played in China with a stuffed leather ball? How crazy is that?My highlight from this unit was definitely when we had a mini sports tournament in our English class. We split into teams and played basketball, badminton, and even had running races. I was on the yellow team and although we didn't win, it was still a total blast! I also enjoyed the reading about the Olympic Games and famous athletes like Michael Phelps. He has the most Olympic gold medals in history – 28 in total! This unit was kind of depressing because we learned just how much damage pollution, deforestation, and other human activities have caused to the planet.There were so many new vocabulary terms related to environmental issues that I had to look up, like "greenhouse gases", "carbon footprint", and "ecological balance". The factsand statistics about things like rising sea levels and dwindling animal populations were really alarming.But we also read inspiring examples of young environmental activists like Greta Thunberg who are bravely raising awareness and calling for change. Her speech about her generation's future being stolen away by inaction on climate change gave me chills. I have a much deeper appreciation now for why we need to make serious efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle.For our unit project, we did a trash audit at our school over the course of a week. We sorted through all the garbage to see what types of waste made up the biggest portions. It was pretty gross to dig through all that muck, but it was an eye-opening way to see how much unnecessary waste we produce through things like excessive packaging and food waste. Our group came up with a plan to start a compost bin and replace styrofoam trays in the cafeteria with reusable plates.Last but not least, Unit 3 was all about creativity and the arts.
