What insiders look for when assessing a high school
Tons of AP classes. Beautiful buildings. A winning soccer team. What makes a
high
school great is all the stuff you hear about?Think again. Here are some absolutely vital,
but often overlooked things that indicate a quality high school.
Adults and students high five each other in the halls.
Or at least smile and say hey.Are students comfortable to enter a teacher's office
or
classroom during a break, just to check in?Do they trust the adults at the school enough to
share their lives outside of school?Indeed, strong, caring relationships with adults in
a
school setting increase students' motivation and academic success.
No child is left without a plan.
Good high schools make sure there's a well-maintained and real-time updated
system
that students and parents know how to use to check on their progress before report
cards
come out, especially for students at risk of failing or dropping out. They give all
students
access to demanding academics and meaningful career options throughout their high school
years, plus extra support for applying for college or pursuing a career.
Everyone's voice is being heard.
All of the students should be valued as individuals and as members of the community.
Do students get to participate in decisions that affect their learning?Do the adults
and
students at the school feel that their personal identities are valued and respected?
When you ask a kid, why are you doing that? He has an answer.
At a quality high school, students should be able to say why they're spending
their
valuable time programming a robot, testing the water at the local stream,or designing
a
museum exhibit. Of course every single assignment will not get a clarity of purpose, but the
more you hear a logical response to why,the more it's likely that students are engaged
in
realistic ways of learning how to solve complex,open-ended,real-world problems.

When Tavia Gilbert studied acting at Seattles Cornish College of the Arts, she
drove
home to Idaho for holidays. She'd listen to audiobooks on those long, seven-hour drives back
and forth. After graduating with an acting degree, Tavia studied documentary radio at the Salt
Institute. Unexpectedly, this six-month program in Portland turned into a twenty-year stay.
Audiobook narration seems like a natural fit for her. Twenty years and 700 audiobooks
later, Tavia Gilbert has narrated every book genre fot almost every publisher in the industry.
She's won countless awards and earned a Grammy nomination(格莱美提名奖)
Although Tavia's successful, established and respected in the business,
narrating
opportunities don't just pop into her inbox. Once she does land a job -
non-fiction,mystery,novel,science fiction, or picture book --Tavia precisely marks her manuscripts
in a rainbow of colors. She notes a character's screaming,Southern lengthened tone
or
Bostonian accent with a blue marker. Green indicates verbs—like screamed, wept—to
emphasize. Red marks alert Tavia to double-check a pronunciation.
To record the book,Tavia has to stay in her home's whisper room. Such a professional
recording studio's double walls block noises that may ruin a production. There Tavia pictures
the story with her voice as she tells it to listeners. In a short time period, she must
perform
numerous characters in a 350-page novel, wrap up the recording, and send it to the publisher.
She's studied
French and Russian and sings in these two languages. Moreover,Tavia feels
comfortable
narrating in a wide variety of dialects. Scottish characters are the most troublesome
for
her.“The dialect is rather tongue-tying,”she laughs.
Several years ago,Tavia narrated the audiobooks all day long.“Sitting with my recording
equipment for twelve hours a day helped me escape the painful loneliness of divorce, illness,
