AMy wife, daughter, and I moved into our home nine years ago and we spent a lot of time and energy in the yard to get it looking like the way it does today. We live on a corner, higher than street level, and the entire side of the yard is surrounded by a professionally built rock wall. The front of the house though is another story because instead of a wall along the sidewalk, the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish. We did the best we could with what we had to work with and called this area our “rock garden”. Whenever we had leftover flowers or plants, Denise or I would stick them out front, just to bring some color to the area. We would do all of the yard work on our own, even the tiring weed-pulling.Last summer I had reached the end of the rock garden and found a tiny little plant that I could not immediately identify, I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise claimed that she didn’t either. We decided to let it continue growing until we could figure out what it was.Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the mystery plant, it appeared to be aSunflower with a tall skinny stalk(茎,杆)and only one head on it. I decided to baby it along andweed around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something unusual. Array The Sunflower had not started where I saw the stalk begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun. That’s when I realized that if a tiny little Sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its wa y of developing, we too have the ability of doing the same thing. Once our environment begins to see that we believe in ourselves like that little Sunflower, we can attain the same nourishment(营养)and growth as well.Stand tall like the Sunflower and be proud of who and what you are and the environment will begin to support you. You will find a way to go under or around your big obstacle in order to reach your desires.1、We can know from the first paragraph that ______.A.the author finished building his home hurriedlyB.the author’s family have lived in this home for nine yearsC.the author’s home is made of rock wallsD.there is a wall along the sidewalk2、The author found it unusual that ______.A.the mystery plant turned out to be a SunflowerB.the Sunflower had a tall stalk and only one headC.the Sunflower grew under and around a big rockD.the Sunflower had started where the stalk was seen3、Which of the following best describes the Sunflower?A.Brave and stubborn B.Confident and persistentC.Optimistic and modest D.Mysterious and devoted4、What can be inferred from this passage?A.Human beings are able to remove obstaclesB.The universal truth made the sunflower surviveC.A big rock blocked out the sunlight of the sunflowerD.We can achieve success as long as we are self-confidentBOne evening at a busy crossroads, I noticed a sister struggling to keep her little kid under Array control while she talked on the pay phone. She wanted him to stay still next to her, but he wanted to run and play by the road, close to rushing buses and taxis. One could sense the woman’s frustration, that she was pulled in too many directions: She was angry at the person on the telephone and shouting at the younger that she would “snap(折断)his leg” if he moved again. As I waited for the traffic light to change, the child began to complain and struggle to free himself from the woman’s grasp. She dropped the phone, seized(抓住)the neck of his tiny. T-shirt and gave him a back-hand blow across the face that I know made his little head spin. The light changed, and passers-by continued on their way. But I stood there, fixed to the pavement. I knew this extremely upset woman would carry through on her threat of violence to the child. Before, I had wanted to get close to her and offer to watch the youngster while she dealt with the troubling situation on the phone. Now I wanted to comfort the little boy. I also wanted to speak to the sister to calm her and to caution(告诫)her, as I wish someone had cautioned me when I was passing my pain on to my daughter and causing her emotional suffering. But I was chicken. I thought, she may think I’m out of line, or I may be her next target.Oft en I’ve thought about that child and the many others abused(虐待)by adults. I wonder how they will internalize(使……藏在心底)their pain, and if it will crush their spirits. Will this little boy grow up to be an abusive man? Will he be gloomy(阴郁的,沮丧的)and withdrawn (孤僻,内向的)? Will he find it hard to communicate with women, with other men? Or will he survive and be sensitive, caring and determined not to continue the cycle? There is too much cruelty(残忍)in the world, too much cruelty between people. I tremble at the increasing verbal(言语的)bitterness and violence among Black girls, and among young mothers trying to discipline their children. This behavior isn’t class-or age-related: I hear sharp words from Black women from all walks of life who are overworked and stressed out and have grown impatient. At times I, too, become impolite to others, or, like the sister on the phone, strike out at(抨击)those closest to me.Often we’re tired because we've made the wrong choices. Young girls who still need mothering are loaded with ch ildren. We sisters easily get hurt and annoyed when we don’t compromise with our own sense of self. Our personal fulfillment requires knowing what is bestfor us, setting our boundaries(界限)and keeping them undamaged. We will always be asked todo more than we are comfortable doing. When we know our boundaries, we can decline Array comfortably. People—and we ourselves—will act in ways we don’t like. But they, like us, are still worthy of love.Whatever irritates(激怒)us about a person should be examined. Is the person reflecting behavior in us that needs to be changed? Often, when I find people irritating, I find they mirror something about me that I need to correct. What’s needed in our personal relationships is a return to gentleness and tolerance(容忍). We must allow one another our learning experiences. Just as violence results to violence, verbal violence—the hard words and sharp tones we use to release inner stress—adds to the distance between us.What we people of African root must do to become, and continue to be strong begins with love, sensitivity and our ability to work together. We Black women have these spiritual resources in abundance(丰富). Now we must encourage them to create a peaceful place—for ourselves, our children, our men.1、We can learn from the passage the mother of the little kid must be ________. We aren’t satisfied with ourselvesc. We have our boundaries damagedd. We decline others’ requests for helpA.a, b B.c, dC.a, d D.b, c4、According to the author, when we find a person irritating, we should ________.A.return to gentleness and tolerance Array B.reflect on our behavior that needs correctingC.avoid the hard words and sharp tonesD.examine if anything is wrong with him第三部分语言知识运用(共两节)第一节(每小题1分,满分20分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项.The other day I was offered two tickets to a special preview of the latest movie for free. When the p assage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general i dea. When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks numbered from S1 to S7 with the exact words you have just heard. For blanks numbered from S8 to S10 you are required to fill in the missing information. You can either use the exact words you have just hea rd or write down the main points in your own words. Finally, when the pass age is read for the third time, you should check what you have written. When John (S1) that morning, he remembered that his mother was going (S2) hospital. He hadn’t (S3) worked out what was wrong with her. He kne w, (S4) , that she hadn’t been well for some time now, and it had become almost (S5) to him to see her eyes narrowed in a sudden attack of pain, and her hand (S6) against her heart. Their own doctor, who she had finally gone to for (S7) , had sent her to a specialist who knew all about these t hings. (S8) . During the weeks since then the pains had come even more often, and the narrowed eyes became an almost permanent part of her exp ression. (S9)______________________________________________.John, a considerate person, tried to think what it would be like to have toot hache all the time and how bad-tempered that would make you. So when h is mother went into hospital, John was going to stay with his aunt, and his father would stay on at home by himself. However, John didn’t feel much h appier. (S10)______________________________________________.※II. Reading Comprehension (30%)Passage OneTread (踩) softly in the garden and pluck that rose with care; flowers cry w hen cut, cucumbers scream and even healthy fruit gurgles (发出咯咯声) acc ording to new acoustic research on the stressful life of plants. The findings, released by the Institute for Applied Physics at the University of Bonn, could have important implications for farmers since, with the prope r eavesdropping device, one can now distinguish between healthy and sick vegetables. Talking to plants, it seems, is not as rewarding as listening to t hem.The Bonn scientists have developed laser-driven microphones that pick up s ounds inaccessible to the human ear. When a leaf or a stem is sliced, the plant signals pain (or perhaps merely dismay) by releasing the gas ethylene (乙烯) over its entire surface.Doctor Frank Kuhnemann of Bonn University has been trapping the ethylene in a bell jar. The gas molecules are later bombarded with laser beams, wh ich makes them vibrate. This produces a sound wave picked up by the mic rophones. ―The more a plant is subjected to stress, the louder the signal we get on our microphone,‖ he said.(91) By eavesdropping on plants it should be possible to develop an earlywarning system to detect pests and disease. Knowing the stress level of fru it and vegetables can also be an aid in efficient storing and transporting. A coustical evidence demonstrates that apples emit higher levels of ethylene, which causes neighboring plants to wilt (枯萎). As a result, the scientists ur ged fruit producers to store apples separately.11. The first paragraph tells us that ___________.A. plants also have feelings like human beingsB. plants may have different reactions to different treatmentsC. we should not cut flowersD. healthy fruit will cry12. The findings’ implication lies in that ____________.A. we can know more about plants through talking to themB. we can help plant grow by playing music for themC. with acoustic device, we can know about the situation a plant is inD. with the help of eavesdropping, we can hear plants talking13. In the experiment, ___________ is not used.A. a jarB. microphonesC. a bellD. laser beams14. According to the passage, plants can ____________.A. dance to the musicB. listen to people talkC. be trapped by laser beamsD. release the gas ethylene15. Through the experiment we know that _____________.A. we should not store apples together with the other fruitsB. not all plants can release the gas ethyleneC. we can hear the cry of a plant with our earsD. plants also eavesdrop our conversationPassage Two(92) Despite a cooling of the economy, high-technology companies are stillcrying out for skilled workers. The Information Technology Association of America projects that more than 800,000 technology jobs will go unfilled next year. The lack of qualified workers poses a huge threat to the U. S. econ omy.The most commonly cited reason for this state of affairs is that the country’s agrarian-age (农村时代) education system fails to prepare students in the primary and secondary grades for twenty-first-century work. Yet an inadequa te and outmoded education system is only part of the problem. A less tangi ble but equally powerful cause is an antique classification system that divide s the workforce into two camps: white-collar knowledge workers and blue-co llar manual laborers.Blue-collar workers emerged in the United States during the Industrial Age as work migrated from farms to factories. (93) White-collar office workers be came a significant class in the twentieth century, outnumbering the blue-coll ar workers by mid-century. Corporations increasingly require a new layer of knowledge worker: a highly skilled multi-disciplined talent, who combines the mind of the white-collar worker with a solid grounding in mathematics and science (physics, chemistry, and biology). These ―gold-collar‖ workers —so named for their contributions to their companies and to the economy as wel l as for their personal earning ability —apply that knowledge to technology. The gold-collar worker already exists in a wide range of jobs. The maintena nce technician who test and repairs aircraft systems at American Airlines; th e network administrator who manages systems and network operations at Procter & Gamble; the engineering technologist who assists scientists at San dia National Laboratories; and the advanced-manufacturing technician at Inte l can all be regarded as gold-collar workers.16. In the first paragraph, the word ―projects‖ can be best replace by ___________.A. throwsB. predictsC. concludesD. claims17. Compared with a blue-collar worker, a gold-collar worker __________.A. is more skillful in technologyB. has received higher educationC. used to be a white-collar workerD. learnt more in high school18. A gold-collar worker ___________.A. knows more than one kind of knowledge or skillB. knows only one kind of knowledge of skillC. earns less than a blue-collar workerD. earns less than a white-collar worker19. The first group of blue-collar workers were most likely to be ____________in the past.A. migrantsB. educatorsC. servantsD. farmers20. When did the number of white-collar workers become bigger than that of the blue-collar workers in American?A. Recently.B. In 1970 or so.C. In 1950 or so.D. During the Industrial Age.Passage ThreeIn the United States there are two major political parties, the Democratic and the Republican. (94) The Democratic party is the older of the two, tracing its history back to the time of Andrew Jackson in 1820s. The Republican party, which followed the Federalist party and the Whigs, was organized in t he 1850s primarily as an antislavery party. Since antislavery sentiment was strongest in the manufacturing area of the North and East, the Republican party logically adopted the protective tariff and other ideas furthering the gro wth of manufacturing in the United States. In 1860 the Democratic party wa s split into two factions, the northern and the southern Democrats, each put ting up its own candidate for president. While the two factions together poll ed more votes than did the Republican ticket, the Republicans received a t otal higher than that of either faction of the Democrats, and Abraham Lincol n was elected president. From 1860 to the present day there have been many attempts to found ne w parties. But whenever a third party has had considerable appeal at the p olls, one of both of the major parties in the next election has embraced the platform accounting for its appeal, and the third party has faded away.Over the years, therefore, the positions of the two major parties have been changing and adapting themselves to the currently important problems of pu blic policy. At one time the Democratic party was considered to be a party standing up for state rights, and the Republican party a party representing t he interests of business and industry. A clearcut difference between the two parties, however, has not existed for more than half a century. If one read s the platforms of the two parties, one finds that there is very little differenc e between them. Each party seems to be appealing to practically every group of voters. Unlike the political parties of Europe, and unlike the Conservat ives and Laborites in England, the political parties in the United States are the collections of many disparate (不同的) elements.21. At first, the platform of the Republican party was centered around ___________.A. antislavery policiesB. developing manufacturingC. settling the disputes between factionsD. solving social problems22. According to the passage, Lincoln was elected because ___________.A. his antislavery policiesB. the Democratic party was split upC. his penetrating speechesD. the Democratic party was for him23. The third parties cannot survive in America because _____________.A. they don’t have appealing policiesB. the two major parties always adapt their policies to the public’s interestC. they are lack of fundsD. they are not allowed to take part in the election24. Nowadays, the two major parties ___________.A. have quite similar platformsB. don’t’ h ave any conflictsC. appeal to different groups of peopleD. have strayed away from the values they cherished in the past25. The two major parties in Britain are ____________.A. similar with those in AmericaB. similar with those in EuropeC. the collection of many different elementsD. different from those in AmericaPassage FourNot only politeness but an attitude of reverence is demanded in church.
