A Brief Analysis of Application of Domestication and

Foreignization in Idiom Translation

XX

Abstract:Idioms are the essence of language and also an important part of language. The

translation of English idioms and Chinese idioms should not only consider transformation

of language, but also transfer of culture. English and Chinese idioms have many common

characteristics. However, there are cultural differences due to the distinction in living

environment, customs, religious beliefs, ways of thinking, etc. Such cultural differences

give the two languages unique cultural charm, but also bring barriers to the translation of

English idioms and Chinese idioms. For this problem, theorists put forward the two cultural

translation strategies-domestication and foreignization. This thesis describes the

development of domestication and foreignization and the applications of them in idiom

translation. Foreignization should be taken as the main strategy for idiom translation and

domestication as supplement one because of its incomparable advantages in cultural

exchange and enrichment, so as to better promote the cultural communication between the

two languages.
