TheUC1838Afamilyofmagneticamplifiercontrollerscontainsthecircuitrytogen-
erateandamplifyalow-levelanalogerrorsignalalongwithahighvolt-
age-compliantcurrentsource.Thissourcewillprovidetheresetcurrentnecessary
toenableamagneticamplifiertoregulateandcontrolapowersupplyoutputinthe
range of 2A to 20A.
Bycontrollingtheresetcurrenttoamagneticamplifier,thisdevicewilldefinethe
amountofvolt-secondsthemagneticamplifierwillblockbeforeswitchingtothe
conductingstate.Magneticamplifiersareidealforpost-regulatorsformulti-
ple-outputpowersupplieswhereeachoutputcanbeindependentlycontrolledwith
efficienciesupto99%.Withasquareorpulse-width-modulatedinputvoltage,a
magneticamplifierwillblockaportionofthisinputwaveform,allowingjustenough
topasstoprovidearegulatedoutput.WiththeUC1838A,onlythemagneticampli-
fiercoil,threediodes,andanoutputL-Cfilterarenecessarytoimplementacom-
plete closed-loop regulator.
TheUC1838Acontainsaprecision2.5Vreference,twouncommittedhigh-gainop
ampsandahigh-gainPNP-equivalentcurrentsourcewhichcandeliverupto
100mA of magnetic amplifier reset current and with –120 volt capability.
Thesedevicesareavailableinaplastic“bat-wing”DIPforoperationovera–20°C
to+85°Ctemperaturerangeand,withreducedpower,inahermeticallysealed
cerdipfor –55°C to +125°C operation.Surface mount versions are also available.
