Learning Anxiety Disorder Atonio, male, 18 years old, went to see the psychologist for help several days ago. His illness was diagnosed as anxiety neurosis or the so called learning anxiety disorder. It is a typical psychological counseling case occurring in campus.
Recently he always seemed negative at learning things that the other students at his age had no trouble with, but he wasn't exactly a mentally retarded boy. He was once a good student and he did well both in math and science.
"I like reading and playing ball games. I'm always in a happy mood. I don't know why... I just can't concentrate on my study and the moment I open my book, my heart starts beating faster. Sometimes I even have panic attacks. I've heard that some people who suffer a panic attack develop a phobia, a deep fear of ever repeating the activity that brought on the attack. And now I am afraid of reading books, doing my homework and taking the exams. The somatic symptoms may include a fast heartbeat, sweating palms, a lightheaded feeling or a period of fright followed by intermittent restlessness. What does this mean? Am I ill or..." Antonio said to the doctor.
"Chinese students who study under high pressure easily get panic. If they repress their emotions, though, those emotions might be rechanneled into somatic symptoms. It is ..."the doctor replied,"But it is not incurable."
Before we start to analyse Antonio's condition, we'd better consider the inducement of learning anxiety disorder. Only by addressing the root causes can the patient be cured finally.
So what are the causes of learning anxiety disorder? In nearly 1/4 cases there is a known biological cause. According to wikipedia, low levels of GABA, a neurotransmitter that reduces activity in the central nervous system, contribute to anxiety. A number of anxiolytics achieve their effect by modulating the GABA receptors.
The majority of cases of learning anxiety disorder are caused by present students' learning mania for access to a prestigious school, obtaining a higher degree or finding an ideal job. In these circumstances, learning anxiety disorder arise in response to study stresses all from schoolmates, teachers and parents. Somewhere between 5% and 9% of high school students are diagnosed with such illness, a figure that is probably an underestimate.
The most important clinical point to relieve from studies of learning anxiety disorder is the benefit of early diagnosis and treatment. Treatment options available include lifestyle changes, psychotherapy, especially cognitive behavior therapy and pharmaceutical therapy. Research has shown that cognitive and behavioral components seek to change thought, physical reactions to anxiety inducing situations. Prescibed medications include several classes of antidepressants and some other commonly used medications. CES(Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation) has also attracted attention as a possible treatment comparing with medications which may trigger safety concerns. Dr.Martin Teicher in Harvard University indicated in The Times that any remission caused by drugs may worsen patients' condition instead.
Attention given to learning anxiety disorder has
significantly increased worldwide. The Chinese government in China has made contribution and will put great efforts on this field in future.。
