Community Service: a Win-Win Situation
Nowadays, a growing number of young people are mainly concerned with prestigious careers, making more money, and living a luxurious life. It seems that we no longer pay attention to the benefits of spending money and time helping the community, the country, or the world. In order to strengthen these human values and improve the world, it is indispensable to require young people to spend a year working in some type of community service.
It is an effective way to en hance young people’s social awareness and develop a strong sense of responsibility if they work in some community service. Today’s young people spend more time staying with families and their friends, and they seldom know the outside world. When they perform community service, they will find there are so many people need their help and appreciate how much they have compared to some people. After engaging in community service, they will see more social problems and know more about their city and their country. The Harvard Institute of Politics (IOP) 2009 survey of youth found that eighty-one percent of all young people believed that community service is effective “as a way of solving important issues facing your community.” To put it simply, we can see that community service is an important civic duty, which can make young people become more responsible and take much more care for others.
Admittedly, doing community service can build up young people’s confidence and help them realize their value s and capacity. While some people are naturally outgoing, others are shy and have a hard time meeting new people. Community service provides a good opportunity for young people to develop their social skills and make them more confident. On one hand, it is easier to branch out and make more friends and contacts while cooperating with others. Working in a group is also a good way to listen to other’s ideas and express their own views confidently. On the other hand, they will feel a natural sense of accomplishment while doing something good for the others and community. The role as a volunteer can also give people a sense of pride and identity. Therefore, by doing community service, young people can not only get the satisfaction of helping others but also help themselves.
Finally and most importantly, we cannot improve our country and the world without young people’s service. According to the report: The Nigerian National Volunteer Service (NNVS) shows that young people work in community service addresses problems of socio-cultural, economic and humanitarian nature, and acts as a peace building mechanism. It has also been preached in most parts of the world to help the development of their countries. Professor T. Umeh of the University of Nigeria Nsukka saw volunteerism as "a service
through giving ourselves, our time, our hands and feet, our ideas, our ability to help another person, our problem solving skills and our professional know-how for the well being of our society". Young volunteers are providing important services at low or even no cost to help others for the country. As a result, community service plays a very important role in the development of a country.
Taking all these factors into consideration, there is no doubt that young people should be required to spend a year working in some type of community service. After all, it is a tremendous win-win situation for themselves, the organizations and communities they serve, and the benefits of community service will be really great, not only in the contemporary society, but also in the future.。
