Comments on Wuthering Heights
The powerful novel Wuthering Heights is written by Emily Bronte. It tells us a tragic life of Heathcliff, both his love and his calculated revenge.
Speak for Heathcliff
Heathcliff’s life is truly controversial, I cannot deny that his character was somehow twisted and it was him that made Catharine’s death. After that he performed revenge against the two families. To some extent, he was cruel, and in his eyes everyone is the enemy. His life was a tragedy since his birth.
In spite of that, I can also see his passionate feeling for Catharine which is never die since they were young. In his mind, Catharine is the whole world. But I firmly believe that it is Catharine’s fault to marry Edger Linton, she should wait and she should listen to the voice from the bottom of her heart. Actually, her behavior betrayed their love.
Other people may argue that his revenge against Hindley and his wife is rather cruel. To some extent, it is reasonable. However, revenge is the only reason for him to live in the society. Thinking about what happened to him in the past, all kinds of misfortune he had suffered from. And he chose to endure with it. I think Hindley deserve the punishment, as for his wife, it was her brother or her noble family that deserted her. More importantly is that he put little pressure on the children. Indeed, we should realize the torture he had to suffer every day since Catharine’s death. He deserves our compassion.
A hero against the system
The love between Heathcliff and Catharine has no consequence, however their brave, courage and insistence really touch me. It was difficult to accept this love by public in that period of time. Inevitably, Heathcliff as the adoptee, will be the victim of this period.
Hindley was firmly opposed to their love, he looked down upon Heathcliff’s birth and in his mind wealth and class is more important than love even though he married a woman without letting anyone know. Edger Linton, who seems gentle and wisdom
but hypocritical, is actually the other representative of the system, he holds as nearly the same views as Hindley, and he deserts his sister merciless. Heathcliff, instead of escape, he fight against them, against the hostile society, deserves our respect.
In the end of the novel a little boy declares that he has seen the ghosts of Heathcliff and Catharine walking on the moor. In this point, Heathcliff is the winner.。
