他在纽约长大，在高中时期就被认为是全美最顶尖的球员之一。
但是当时大学层面的球队并没有准备好接纳他，因此林书豪只能进入哈佛大学继续深造。
就算是进入了哈佛大学，林书豪的生活也没有多少改变。
他与那些参加NCAA锦标赛的球队不同，他又成为了那些在课余时间不断的训练自己，试图将自己提升到了更高的水平。

“一直以来，我从未幻想过有一天书豪会在大学或者职业篮坛亮相。
”林杰明说，“我只是单纯地爱看他打球。
现在，我以他为荣，他是我生命中的惊喜。
我不止一次对他说，我年轻时的梦，已经成真了。
”麻省剑桥(哈佛大学所在地区)的球馆都挤爆了的疯狂球迷们，他们打着标语、穿着定制的T恤(上面写着“我爱你杰瑞米·林！”)，让这个来自哈佛大学的美籍华人看起来比乔纳森兄弟(美国当红歌唱组合)还受欢迎。
最令人称奇的部分，林书豪摇着头、叹着气总结道，是几乎关于这件事的一切。
被人们这样谈论，我还有点不习惯。
[1]实际上，整个哈佛大学篮球队也是一样，他们还从未在8所学校组成的常青藤联盟里拿过第一名。
这所美国最权威的大学在篮球方面一无所获。
我总是不明白，为什么我们的篮球队不能打出成绩呢。
哈佛校友、微软CEO史蒂夫·鲍尔默说，现在，他们终于有起色了。
随着林书豪的逐渐成熟，哈佛大学本赛季的最终战绩达到了21胜7负，刷新了队史纪录，而林书豪本人几乎肯定进入常青藤联盟的最佳阵容，而且是常青藤联盟年度球员的有力竞争者。
篮球成绩当哈佛大学和康奈尔大学在2010年1月份碰面时，场上的关注点不仅有康奈尔的砍分高手——莱恩维特曼，还有两名组织后卫。
第一位就是令人称奇的林书豪。
这位身高1.91米、体重90公斤的后卫本赛季场均得到17.1分、4.8次助攻、4.5个篮板、2.9次抢断和1.3次盖帽。
我这辈子身边总有很多好的球员。
哈佛大学教练托尼·埃梅克说，杰瑞米就是其中之一，他太出色了。
另一个受关注的组织后卫，就是教练埃梅克本人。

上赛季，林书豪是常青藤联盟中唯一一个各项数据都排名前10的球员。

”球探关注哈佛大学官网给予林书豪的评价是：集速度与出色控球能力于一体的全能控卫，投射出色，影响比赛的方式很多。
打败波士顿学院的那场比赛证明了这一点，那场比赛是哈佛大学历史上首次打败排名前25的球队。
美国媒体《》给予林书豪的评价更高：亚洲纳什。
哈佛大学在NCAA 属于一级联盟，而林书豪有非常大的希望进入NBA，如果他成功进入NBA，将成为继克里斯-杜德利后首位从常青藤联盟进入NBA的队员，更是哈佛自1953年后首位进入NBA的队员，也将成为首位进入NBA的美籍华裔。
人物评价在黑人当道的美国篮球圈里，黄皮肤的华裔球员生存空间非常的狭隘，林书豪自己曾说过“篮球是一项属于白人和黑人的运动。
在美国，一名亚裔美国篮球运动员是不受人尊重的。
”林书豪在刚进入哈弗篮球队时经常被投来异样的目光，他在07年夏天参加旧金山的Pro-Am夏季联赛时，当他走进球馆开始热身时，有工作人员跑过来提醒他说：“这里举行的是篮球比赛不是排球”，当他在客场打比赛时有人在看台上大说对他说：“滚回中国去吧！”，他就在这样的环境下一点点的进步，用自己表现来回击蔑视他的人。
他的表现也引来了很多亚裔球员的关注，“我经常可以收到一些亚裔球员的email，他们写信支持我鼓励我”。
尽管随着姚明，易建联这样的中国NBA球员的出现，让美国人开始了解亚洲篮球，了解中国篮球，但在多数美国人眼里他们只是亚洲人中的异类，全靠巨大的身体的本钱，这丝毫不能够改变美国“亚洲(亚裔)人不会打篮球”的印象。
虽然在此之前在NCAA一级联盟中也有过一些(亚洲)亚裔球员，但又有多少能够让美国人提及或者记住的明星球员呢？(亚洲)亚裔球员能够在NCAA一级的学校打球已经是一种荣耀，如若是能打上先发那更是凤毛麟角，连亚洲人自己都不敢奢望哪一天(亚洲)亚裔球员能够成为NCAA一级联盟中的明星球员。
所以林书豪成功的意义远远不止他个人那么简单。
两年前华盛顿州立大学的华裔混血后卫Derrick Low(目前在立陶宛联赛打球)在NCAA取得的成就相比他的亚裔前辈来说已经有所突破，他是夏威夷历史上最伟大的篮球员，并且代表美国队参加了泛太平洋运动会，不过由于先天身体素质以及球风(6-1的三分射手)，限制了他向更高水平联赛(NBA)买进的脚步。
而林书豪是一个真正意义上的黄皮肤华裔球员，其次他的身高，身体素质，以及综合能力相比Low未来会有更大的发展空间。
林书豪拥有正统的控卫身高(6-3)，聪明的头脑(哈佛的高材生)，以及不错身体条件，在进攻端他可以轻松突破对手后暴扣，可以在篮下激烈的身体对抗中将球投中，他虽然称不上是一个射手，但却常常命中关键的投篮，当然作为控卫他也能很好的完成球分配的任务，林书豪表示，他希望传更多的好球给队员，不过作为球队的进攻核心他必须担负起球队得分的重任。
在防守端他的篮板，抢断能力也非常的强，尤其是作为控卫他的封盖能力在亚洲球员中是非常罕见的。
林书豪正在依靠自己的努力迎来更多的目光.当然要让一名在常青藤联盟打球的球员引起NBA球探的关注是一件非常困难的事，一位NBA球探曾经表示常青藤的球员根本不会在他们的考虑范围内。
大多数专家认为林书豪进入NBA的机会是微乎其微，不过他未来可以在海外联赛有一个很好的职业生涯。
林书豪不但球技好，品学兼优，还是虔诚的基督徒，林的家境不错，在从高中时代就经常去贫民区做社区服务，大学之后由于要兼顾学业和篮球两方面没有时间再做那些，不过他和他的家人每年暑假都回内地老家平湖，捐款并向当地学生传授球技，这样的球员不应该成为中国年轻一代学习的榜样吗？他是篮球界里真正的华人之光。
他很好的证明了一个黄皮肤后卫球员一样能在美国打出一片天，球技好和读书好并没有冲突！林书豪的未来发展在美国学界篮球窜红后，关于林书豪的未来发展，一是聚焦能否进入NBA，二是他将选择代表哪支球队出战国际赛事。
对于林书豪的选秀前景，许多美国的专业选秀网站都持乐观态度。
一般认为林书豪如果现在参加选秀，他将在第一轮20位左右被选中。
如果他在本赛季能够在与传统篮球名校比赛有好的发挥，那么他的选秀顺位还将有上调的空间。
换句话说，林书豪已经被NBA预定了。
不过在大洋彼岸，人们对林书豪日后代表哪支球队打国际比赛更加感兴趣。

不过林继明也没有把话说死，他认为虽然父子俩都觉得台湾的篮球水平不差，但会否代表中华台北出战，还要看他们能不能拿到伦敦奥运的入场券再说。
林书豪现在有多红美国媒体这样描述：他的拥趸来自全美各地，东至马萨诸塞州剑桥，西至加利福尼亚州圣克拉拉。
