Unit 3 Language in use
Step 1Lead in
Play a song about sports and have a short conversation with students. In the conversation, try to use the comparative forms of the adjectives and adverbs.

Step 2Grammar
1.Work in pairs. According to the photos in Activity 1, ask the students to say whether they play sports and which are their favourites. Write the sentences down.
2.Ask the students to complete the sentences in Activity 2.There is a word “than” in each sentence, so t he students can finish them easily. Pay attention to the words which need the suffix “er” and which need “more” to make a comparative.
3.Have the students read the examples in Activity 3 carefully and then complete the sentences. The most important thing is to decide if the word in brackets needs to be changed.
4.Ask the students to complete the passage in Activity 4 first. Then choose four students to show their answers. For the mistakes, the teacher should explain.

Step 3Listening
1.Ask the students to read the exercises in Activity 5 carefully first. Then discuss them.
2.Play the tape. Have the students complete the exercises on their own.
3.Play the tape once more for the whole class to check answers.
Step 4Reading
1.Ask the students to guess what the passage is about according to the photo in Activity 6. Tell the students to read the exercises behind the passage carefully first, then read the passage to find the answers. After finishing them, have the students point out the important language points (faster/cheaper/more fun/see sb. doing sth./go jogging/at weekends/The+比较级,the+比较级).(详见素材三突破一) 2.Ask the students to look at the photo and say what they can see. Step 5Group work
1.Ask the students to read the example conversation and talk about their favourite Olympic sports. Each group chooses two students to express their opinions. (Activity 7)
2.Tell the students to write down their ideas and sort out the information they want to include in their posters. Attention: the posters should be simple. (Activity

3.Ask the students to stick their posters on the blackboard and the whole class choose the better ones. (Activity 9)
