One big advantage of speaking is that it gives you a chance to control others’ thoughts and actions. Whatever your goal is —to have a boss hire you, to 36 others to vote for the person of your 37 or to describe the 38 you want your hair cut ... the key to success seems to be the 39 to speak well.Another 40 advantage of speaking is the chance it provides to 41 the admiration, respect, or liking of others. Tell jokes, and everyone will think you’re really a 42 m an. Tell them all you know, and they’ll be 43 by your wisdom. But keep quiet, and it seems as if you are a 44 person. Finally, talking gives you the 45 to release (释放) energy in a way that listening can’t. When you’re 46 , the chance to talk about your problems can often help you feel better. In the same way, you can often 47 your anger by letting it out orally. It is also helpful to 48 your excitement with others by talking about it, 49 keeping it inside often leaves you feeling as if you might burst. While it is true that talking does have many advantages, it’s important to 50 that listening can do good to listeners, too. As you’ll soon read, being a good listener is one good way to 51 others with their problems; and what better way is there to have others 52 you? As for controlling others, it may be true that it’s hard to be persuasive while you’re listening, but your 53 to hear others out will often make them open to your ideas 54 . Most drivers will buy small, fuel-efficient cars or simply hire one when they need it. On busy roads, cars will lock together to form “buses”, allowing f or smoother travel and less braking. Super-fast trains will connect city centers at speed close to that of planes. This is a picture of life in 2050, according to a group of Australian scientists who were asked to explore a simple question: Are there any engineering, scientific or environmental barriers (障碍) to reaching 30/50, that is, a population of 30 million in Australia by 2050?That’s not to say it’s an easy path, but it’s not an unconquerable one, concluded by these scientists. “At the moment, there are lots of issues surrounding climate change, water and energy supplies, and so people have concerns that the future is not looking rosy, but with proper planning and good engineering the issues can be addressed,” said technical director Dr Vaughan Beck. The scientists’ report paints a picture o f a future Australia in which life expectancy will have reached 92.2 for men, and 95 for women. With greater life expectancy comes greater demand for public housing and health and medical facilities. Australians are also likely to be more than twice as wealthy, pushing up spending in areas such as tourism, private education and cars. The 30/50 study says climate change is expected to lead to increased heat stress on humans and ecosystems, and also place additional strain on crops. There will be more migrants from countries greatly affected by climate change, mainly in south-east Asia and the Pacific Basin.Electricity prices will rise as resources become more scarce while in cities new sources of water such as surface and ground water, recycling and seawater desalination (淡化) will get rid of people’s worry about water supplies. However, the report warns that to achieve 30/50, important decisions about basic investment should be made on a national basis.60. I can’t say that I enjoyed it, but it was an experience I’ll never forget.I could never understand why there were so many things in the sales. Now I know the secret! Firstly, there is the special winter stock and the stock that people buy all the year round. Some of these things are slightly reduced. Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn’t sell last year; these are heavily reduced to clear them. Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in especially for the sales; these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60% in the sale. Lastly, they buy in “seconds” for the sa le and they are sold very cheaply. When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already a queue around three sides of the building. When the big moment arrived to open the doors, the security guards, looking less confident than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd charged in. I couldn’t believe my eyes; this wasn’t shopping. It was a battlefield! One poor lady couldn’t keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from behind.Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colors and styles they wanted. Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small children to crawl through people’s legs and get hold of things they couldn’t get near themselves.Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous English queue gone? The whole day continued like that, but I kept my temper! I was taking money hand over fist and began to realize why, twice a year, Graham’s were happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield like this.In the sale fever, people were spending money like water without thinking if they needed what they were buying. As long as it was a bargain, it was OK.You won’t believe this, but as soon as I got home, I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed, fearing the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale.69.
