大侦探福尔摩斯 Sherlock Holmes 英文影评review byROGER EBERTThe less I thought about Sherlock Holmes, the more I liked "Sherlock Holmes." Yet another classic hero has been fed into the f/x mill, emerging as a modern superman. Guy Ritchie's film is filled with sensational sights, over-the-top characters and a desperate struggle atop Tower Bridge, which is still under construction. It's likely to be enjoyed by today's action fans. But block bookings are not likely from the Baker Street Irregulars. One of the comforts of the Arthur Conan Doyle stories is their almost staid adherence to form. Villains and cases come and go up the staircase at 221B Baker Street, but within that refuge, life stays the same: Holmes all-knowing and calm, Watson fretful and frightened, clues orderly, victims distraught, never a problem not seemingly insoluble. Outside is the fabled Victorian London, a city we all know in our imaginations. I think I became an Anglophile on those winter nights when I sat curled up in my dad's big chair, a single lamp creating shadows in the corners of the room, reading the Modern Library edition of the stories while in the basement I heard the comforting sounds of my parentsdoing the laundry.Every Holmes story is different and each one is the same, just as every day has its own saint but the Mass is eternal. "Sherlock Holmes" enacts the strange new rites of hyperkinetic action and impossible CGI, and Holmes and Watson do their best to upgrade themselves. Holmes tosses aside the deerstalker hat and meerschaum calabash, and Watson has decided for once and all to abandon the intimacy of 221B for the hazards of married life. Both of them now seem more than a little gay; it's no longer a case of "oh, the British all talk like that." Jude Law even seemed to be wearing lipstick when he promotedthe movie on Letterman.Well, Holmes, like Hamlet, has survived countless interpretations. The character has been played memorably by Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, Frank Langella, Peter Cushing, John Barrymore, James D'Arcy, Michael Caine, John Cleese, Peter Cook, Rupert Everett,William Gillette, Stewart Granger, Charlton Heston, Anthony Higgins, Raymond Massey, Roger Moore, John Neville, Leonard Nimoy, Christopher Plummer, Jonathan Pryce, Nicol Williamson -- and now Robert Downey Jr., who is not the least of these.Downey's Holmes is at once more dissolute and more fit than previous incarnations. Holmes' canonical devotion to cocaine is here augmented by other drugs and a great deal of booze. Yet Holmes has the body of a lithe athlete, the skills of a gymnast and the pugilism of a world champion. He and Watson (who is, you recall, only a doctor, although one with clients who must be puzzled about his office hours) spring readily into action likeBatman and Robin. In a really very good opening sequence, the two burst in upon the fiendish satanist Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) in the act of committing a dastardly act. Blackwood is sent to the gallows and sealed in his tomb, only to reappear (to Holmes' undeniable satisfaction) seemingly still alive. This sets off a series of action set pieces in the streets of London, which have never seemed more looming, dark and ominous; I had the impression Jackthe Ripper had just darted out of view. After the initial apprehension of Blackwood, Holmes retreats to his digs. In Conan Doyle, this is often explained as "a period of study" and implied drug reveries. In Ritchie's version, he trashes his rooms like a drunken undergraduate; they lack only empty pizza boxes. This will not do. My Sherlock is above all fastidious. But never mind. Blackwood'sresurrection gives him a new reason for living. There is also interest from two women: Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), of course, said to be the only woman to ever touch Holmes' heart, and Mary Morstan (Kelly Reilly), Watson's intended, who may be in for more than she knows. The advent of Mary on the scene sends Holmes into fits of petulance; how dare the doctor prefer a woman to his own fascinating company? Watson has always maintained quarters elsewhere, but in this film, the cozy confines of 221B make his other rooms seem more than ever like a beard. The Conan Doyle stories are still read, and probably always will be. Most readers get to at least a few. But among moviegoers on Christmas night (traditionally one of the busiest movie nights of the year), probably not so many. They will be unaware that this "Sherlock Holmes" is cheerfully revisionist. They will be entertained, and so was I. The great detective, who has survived so much, can certainly shrug off a few special effects.。
经典电影英文影评1.《Forrest Gump》Forrest Gump grows up in the county of Greenbow, Alabama. He lives with his mom, who is a real smart and strong woman. Although Forrest’s IQ is only 75, his mom manages to let him have the finest education, and always tell him “You are no different”. In school, Forrest meets a girl named Jenny, and they become best friends. Under Jenny’s encouragement, Forrest discovers his ability to run like the wind blows. Fortunately, this ability gives him the chance to go to college where he becomes an all-star football player. After graduation, Forrest joins the army for service in Vietnam, and he finds new friends Bubba and Dan. In the war, Forrest rescues many comrades, but Bubba is seriously wounded and dies. Lieutenant Dan, the platoon's commanding officer, is also badly wounded and loses both legs. He chastises Forrest for saving him, insisting that he should die honorably on the battlefield instead of becoming a cripple. When Forrest gets back from Vietnam, he is awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. During the next several decades, Forrest becomes a war hero, a famous ping-pang player, a national celebrity, a successful businessman, and something of an American idol. Forrest successfully realizes Bubba’s dream and help Dan discover his self-worth. Finally, Forrest marries Jenny, and has a happy life with his son after Jenny dies.“Life was like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.”When the first time Jenny asked Forrest to run away and the first time Forrest freed himself from the bondage, hope has been growing up in his mind. Though Forrest is surely a little stupid, he believes “stupid is as stupid does”, so he fears nothing and does his best. In his innocence, Forrest does what he feels he has to do, no matter the situations and the people around him, lead only by an inner sense of right. My heart is deeply shocked by this “stupid” man, and I think in recent times we surely need this spirit. So, let’s have a try now.2.《2012》The film 2012 tells a breathtaking story that everything on the earth is destroyed in the year 2012, only a small number of human beings survive from the doomsday. The hero Jackson takes his children to go camping in Yellowstone National Park, where they meet a man named Charlie. That night, Charlie plays a video of Charles Hapgood's theory that polar shifts and the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar predict that the 2012 phenomenon is going to occur. He has a map of the ark project in addition to information about government officials and scientists from around the world who were murdered after planning to alert the public about the project and the upcoming doomsday. After the family returns home, Jackson rents a plane to rescue his family. Hecollects his family and some friends as the Earth crust displacement begins, and they escape Los Angeles quickly. Learning the arks are in China, the group lands in Las Vegas, where the group secures a bigger plane and departs for China. Eventually, Jackson and his family successfully get on the arks.In my opinion, this is a powerful film, and it makes me think a lot. If we are in such a situation that a disaster is surely coming, what should we do? Will we inform other people of the upcoming disaster? Will we escape first without considering other people’s lives? Will we abandon our family, our friends, even our nation? The film teaches me of love, responsibility, forgiveness, and so on.Don’t think that the plot in 2012 has been exaggerated, actually it is really based on science. Looking at our earth carefully, we have done so much damage to it. All the nations should do its best to protect our earth, because in some sense it is to protect ourselves. We need no more arks, and the doomsday will never come.3.《The Shawshank Redemption》For the first time I heard the name of the film, I thought that Shawshank must be the hero’s name, but in fact it is a name of a prison, in which the hero stayed for almost 20 years. In early 1947, young banker Andy Dufresne is mistakenly convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, and then he is put into the Shawshank prison. In prison, Andy and Red become best friends. Using his wisdom, he brings a lot of benefits for his friends. For having a banker experience, the warden of the prison and the chief guard require Andy to make money for them by improper means, but at the same time he records their guilt.Andy makes a plan of prison break, and secretly carries it out during the prison life. In a night of thunder and lightning, he escapes through the hole he dug, crawls 500 yards through a narrow pipe, and successfully gets the freedom. After escaping, Andy withdraws most of the corruption money from several banks, and sends evidence of warden's corruption to a newspaper. Then Andy goes to Mexico, where Red and Andy are happily reunited on the beach.Such a story may sound simple, but the truth behind the words is remarkable. “H ope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.” Andy clearly knows that he isn’t a murderer and believes he doesn’t belong to Shawshank. There is hope in Andy’s mind, and he gives hope to his friends. I really love this sentence “G et busy living or get busy dying”, Andy gets busy doing what he should do instead of wasting time. His story encourages people to fight to preserve the dignity of human beings, to appreciate the beauty of life, and the most importance is to keep hope forever.4.《The Pursuit of Happiness》In San Francisco, 1981, the salesman Chris Gardner invests all the family savings in portable bone-density scanners. He believes he has made a wise decision because the scanners can give a denser picture than an x-ray machine though it’s a little expensive. However, they do not sell as Chris imagines, and even bring big troubles to him. As Chris goes everywhere and tries to figure out how to sell the scanners, his wife leaves him, he loses his house, his bank account, and credit cards. Forced to live out in the streets with his son, Chris is desperate to find a steady job.Fortunately, Chris gets a chance to fight for a stockbroker internship position at Dean Witter. However, in the six-month training period he will get no salary, and there are 19 other candidates for this only position. Meanwhile, moneyless, homeless, Chris has all sorts of difficulties with his son. But he is very smart and hardworking, and he never gives up. Eventually, for his great efforts, Chris becomes a broker at Dean Witter and starts his career there. In 1987, Chris founds the investment firm Gardner Rich and becomes a successful businessman. There are so many classic lines in this great film, from which I learned a lot. “You want something, go get it!” In reality, most of us have an equal opportunity, if we really want it, just do it. “People can't do something by themselves; they wanna tell you you can not do it.” Although we will come up against all kinds of difficulties, we must have confidence in ourselves and never give up.In this film, I recognize another thing, which is Chris’s love to his son. Actually, all the efforts he does are not only to achieve his dream but also to give happiness to his son. Chris says “You have a dream, you got to protect it”.5.《Hachiko: A Dog's Story》Our hero, professor Parker Wilson, finds an abandoned dog at the train station and takes it home. Parker finds that the dog is an Akita dog and names it Hachiko. However, nobody comes to claim the dog, so Parker decides to keep Hachi in his family. In the following years, Parker takes good care of Hachi and trains him patiently. Hachi will accompany Parker to the train station every day and return each afternoon to greet him after work, they become best friends. One day, Parker dies suddenly from a heart attack when he is teaching his music class, and never come back. However, Hachi remains waiting for his master lying in the snow, for several hours, until Parker's son comes to collect him. The next day, Hachi returns to the station and waits, remaining all day and all night. As time passes, Hachi gets older and older, and he is waiting for Parker for nine years until his death. He teaches the local people love, compassion and above all unyielding loyalty. The film is based on a true Japanese story and it's only natural that the film is great because the real story itself is very touching. I learned that now a bronze statue of Hachiko has been set in his waiting spot outside the Shibuya station in Japan as a permanent reminder of his devotion and love. What is love and what is loyalty? There is no doubt that this film is full of love and loyalty, which Hachi brings to the audiences. Someone may say “Hachi is just a dog without thought and wisdom.”Yes, I can’t deny such a reality, but in many respects we human beings do no better than animals. In all, Hachi is a respected and great dog, and his pure loyalty is what we should learn.6.《The Terminal》Viktor Navorski, who comes from an Eastern European country Krakozhia, arrives in New York, with the purpose of achieving his father’s music dream. Unfortunately, Viktor’s country broke out a civil war after he left, and he suddenly becomes a man without a country. For this reason, the US airport cannot recognize Viktor, and he is denied to set foot on New York. He also can't be deported so he is told by the security manager Dixon that he has to remain in the airport until his status can be recognized.Viktor doesn't speak English very well, so he cannot talk to or understand anyone. But he somehow adapts and sets up residence in the airport, which makes Dixon who placed him there unhappy. So he tries to get Viktor to leave but Viktor is smart and remains in the airport, and even have a better life. Viktor makes friends with some of the people who work in the airport and is attracted to an air hostess Amelia.Several months later, the war in Krakozhia ends, but Dixon will still not allow Viktor to enter the United States. Finally, with the help of his friends, Viktor successfully leaves the airport, and accomplish his purpose.About this film, I have some words to say. Firstly, I am glad to see that Viktor achieves his father’s dream through constant efforts. Secondly, most of people are friendly, and if we have a sincere heart we will have countless friends. Thirdly, I feel a little sorry that Viktor cannot be together with Amelia, but I believe both of them will have a new life.I can’t help saying that now I really love the actor named Tom Hanks for his perfect acting skill. From Forrest Gump to Viktor Navorski, he always seems a little stupid, but he finally succeeds again and again. It’s really not about fortune, and it depends on love, sincerity, courage, persistence and so on.7.《Brave Heart》It is a story about a national hero of Scotland -- William Wallace. In the 13th Century, Scotland is under the heel of King Edward I of England, who granted areas of land in Scotland to his nobility which they were to rule along with the traditional privileges. In the uprising against cruel English ruler, Wallace’s father and brother sacrifice, and he is taken abroad by his uncle to learn knowledge and skills. When Wallace returns home, he falls in love with his childhood lover Murron, and they m arry in secret so that she doesn’t have to spend a night with theEnglish lord. Soon after that, Wallace kills an English soldier who tries to rape Murron, and for this reason Murron is finally executed by the lord.Full of anger, Wallace determines to fight against the English ruler, and in response to Wallace's exploits, people of Scotland rise in revolt against England. Although Wallace comes up against all kinds of difficulties, he never gives up. For the betrayal of his partners, Wallace fails to defeat the English ruler. Before Wallace’s dying, the scene that he shouts loudly "Freedom!" moves everyone. After Wallace’s death, his previous partner Bruce continues to fight and finally makes Scotland free.In my viewpoint, at first Wallace has no intention of being a freedom fighter, he is just a simple man with simple desires to live in peace and raise a family. However, circumstances make that impossible, so he has to be brave and stand out, not for the death of his father and wife, but for the freedom of his nation. I am really shocked by his brave heart.I feel a little sorry for Wallace’s death, because he cannot see for himself that the freedom of Scotland is back again. However, his heart for freedom will last forever, and lead his people to fight against dark rulers, fight for freedom.8.《The Day After Tomorrow》The hero of this film, a paleoclimatologist named Jack Hall, discovers that the huge polar ice sheet is melting quickly due to the global warming. The situation will lower ocean temperatures, and then causes a massive climate shift which brings about many natural disasters and eventually a new ice age. It’s too late to inform everyone in the nation, and when people realize the situation and try to move to the warmer south, the disaster has arrived. Meanwhile, Jack’s son Sam is attending an academic competition with his friends in New York.As Jack’s request, Sam and his friends stay in the library and burn books to get warm. Worrying about his son, Jack and his two partners set out for New York to rescue his son. Overcoming all the difficulties including the death of a partner, Jack finally arrives in New York and finds the library. Gladly finding Sam and his friends are all alive, Jack embraces Sam tightly for a long time. In Mexico, the new President orders search and rescue teams to look for other survivors, having been given hope by the survival of Sam's group. This is another disaster film, and it deeply shocked my heart again. Although there are countless people die in the disaster, I believe that survivors have learned a lot, and people all over the world will take action to protect our earth. In addition, the relationship between Jack and Sam runs through the whole film.I want to say Jack is a great father, because he does what he promised his son no matter how difficult it is. At the same time, Sam is also a great young man, because he is intelligent, brave and responsible. Both of them set good examples for us.It’s a great film, not for its large investment and magnificent scenes, but for what it brings to human beings.。

Film Review on Transformers 2: Revenge of the FallenTransformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a 2009 American , directed by and produced by . It is the to (2007) and the second film in the . Revenge of the Fallen was nominated for at the and for at the . It also won 5 for Best Actress, Breakout Performance-Female, Best Sequel, Best F/X, and Scream Song of the Year. The film was a success, achieving the second highest Wednesday opening gross in history, bringing in $62 million in North America and close to $100 million worldwide. It is currently the fourth highest-grossing film of 2009 worldwide (behind, , and) and the second-highest grossing film of 2009 in the United States, only behind making it the 22nd highest grossing movie of all time. In less than a month, the film surpassed the all-time earnings of its predecessor.Clocking in at nearly two and a half hours, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen rumbles into theaters as a slam-bang exercise. Director Michael Bay ups the ante on his 2007 hit Transformers by hurling even more massive amounts of swirling, twirling, machine-crunching robot action onto the screen. Industrial Light and Magic’s photorealistic CGI bots interact seamlessly with star Shia La Beouf and other cast members against a backdrop of huge explosions and military firepower. The plot revolves around (), the human caught in the war between and , having visions of Cybertronian symbols, and being hunted by the Decepticons under the orders of their long-trapped leader, , who seeks to get revenge on Earth by finding and activating a machine that would provide the Decepticons with an source, destroying all life on the planet in the process. It’s an impressive display of digital effects, but bigger, faster, louder and longer do not necessarily equal better. Bay’s famous fondness for blowing up stuff threatens to overwhelm the senses in Round 2 of the ongoing grudge match that pits evil, alien Decepticon robots against a fractious coalition of civilians, soldiers and humanity-loving Autobots.Still, there’s plenty to admire in this fast, furious and frequently goofy sequel, which opens Wednesday. Within the first 12 seconds, Bay showcases his gift for masterful wide-screen compositions as he sets up ’s 17,000-year back story. Following a manic blur of bot-chasing mayhem that takes place for no discernible reason on the streets of Shanghai, the story catches up with the comparatively docile doings of reluctant hero Sam Witwicky.Played by La Beouf with his usual hyper charm, Sam heads off for college, leaving behind his girlfriend Mikaela (reprised by ) his best Autobot friend, Bumblebee and his robot-slaying past. But when shape-shifting Decepticons figure out that Sam holds the key to their survival, he hits the road in search of a mysterious matrix with evil bots in hot pursuit. At one point, as a machine prepares to slice into his brain with a circular saw, Sam protests: “I’m just a normal kid with normal problems.”Unlike many of its sci-fi brethren, including the grim Terminator Salvation, the PG 13-rated Revenge of the Fallen embraces its inner Joker. The film received mostly negative reviews by the critics. Actor Shia LaBeouf was unimpressed with the film, stating "We got lost. We tried to get bigger. It's whathappens to sequels. It's like, how do you top the first one? You've got to go bigger, went so big that it became too big, and I think you lost the anchor of the movie. ... You lost a bit of the relationships. Unless you have those relationships, then the movie doesn't matter. Then it's just a bunch of robots fighting each other."The Houston Chronicle called it "A well-oiled, loudly revving summer action vehicle that does all that’s required, and then some". Jordan Mintzer from Variety said Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen takes the franchise to a vastly superior level of artificial intelligence. said "Revenge of the Fallen may be a massive overdose of popcorn greased with motor oil. But it knows how to feed your inner 10-year-old's appetite for destruction". According to , Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is Bay's worst-reviewed film, faring even lower than . Ray Bennett of commented in his review that "for the uninitiated, it's loud, tedious, and at 147 minutes, way too long"., who had given the 2007 film three stars, gave Revenge of the Fallen only one star, calling it "...a horrible experience of unbearable length".He later wrote in his blog about the film, saying "The day will come when Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will be studied in film classes and shown at cult film festivals. It will be seen, in retrospect, as marking the end of an era. Of course there will be many more CGI-based action epics, but never again one this bloated, excessive, incomprehensible, long or expensive ". critic Peter Travers did not give the film any stars considering that "Transformers 2 has a shot at the title Worst Movie of the Decade".In the movie, helicopters, fighter jets and panther-shaped robots take precedence over La Beouf and his exceptionally photogenic co-star Fox. Too tiny tocause much damage to the massive Devastator and his fellow killer ‘bots, the humans do an awful lot of running as the mechanized warriors smash each other to bits.Though there are many negative comments on Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, personally speaking, I think there are many things should be admitted in this movie. For example, as the director did in the first Transformers movie, Optimus Prime gets the last word amid the wreckage, Revenge of the Fallen’s most soulful character voices the hope that man and machine can co-exist. This is a good hope to be harmonious with the unknown power. It alarms humanbeings to introspect. Besides, I appreciatie the music in the movie. I think should thank Linkin Park, cause their songs certainly added coulor to the movie. As the old saying goes “Love me, love my dog”, I like the movie partly because that I am a big fan of Linkin Park.。
Superman regime—《Injustice Gods among us》拍完了期末作业,帮着大一学弟剪完了片子,我也终于和成都-scofield一起观看了《钢铁之躯》,看完后他问我感觉怎么样,我顿时语塞,对于这类问题我总是找不到合适的言语来表达,对于《钢铁之躯》更是如此。

X-manAs "the X-man" series prequel, the film has more new pictures, more exciting action sequences, younger people on the X variants, as well as the X-Men team antecedents and consequences. For the arrival of X-Men on the big screen represents the culmination of efforts that stretch back more than 20 years. For the long time, Marvel has been trying to get one of their properties - Spiderman, The Fantastic Four, X-Men, or any number of others - out of the pages of a comic book and into a major motion picture. Their longtime rival, DC, did it twice - once with Superman and once with Batman - but every trip to the cinematic altar left Marvel as a jilted bride.X-Men, which feature an A-list, cast and a top-notch director represents Marvel's best chance at gaining a foothold in Hollywood. If the film succeeds, they have other projects waiting in the wings; including multiple X-Men sequels. If it fails, the future of big-budget superhero movies, already uncertain in the wake of the Batman and Robin disaster, will be gloomy indeed.X-Men have a strong fandom. Since the comic book first arrived on shelves in the mid-60s, it has consistently been one of the bestselling titles; most people who have collected comics at one time or another have bought at least one X-Men issue. Yet it remains uncertain how much box office clout these X-Men fans will be able to muster. Every movie studio hopes for the success of a Star Trek or a Batman. But the result could just as easily be akin to X-Files - a movie thought to have a large, fanatical following but which tanked after a big debut. There is no question that X-Men will finish at the top of the box office chart during the first weekend of its release. It has been two decades since I last picked up an X-Men comic book. Once, in what seems like another lifetime, I was a comic book collector, and for about three years in the late 70s’ and early 80s’, X-Men was one of the books I purchased religiously, dolling out a portion of my meager allowance to the guy behind the cash register at El Dorado Comics. After my interest in collecting comics waned, I lost track of X-Men. Now, revisiting those 20 years later in a different medium, I find that there haven't been many fundamental changes. To one degree or another, I recognize many of the characters, so, at least on the same level, the filmmakers have made an effective translation from print to celluloid. But is it a good enough metamorphosis tosatisfy today's X-Men fans? And, more importantly, will it achieve what Superman and Batman accomplished to the movie? For someone with my background, the film is effectively paced with a good balance of exposition, character development, and special effects-enhanced action. Neither the plot nor the character relationships are difficult to follow, and the movie avoids the trap of spending too much time explaining things that don't need to be explained. X-Men fandom is likely to be divided over whether the picture is a success or a failure. Many comic book lovers will be pleased to see the heroes brought intact to the screen by a group of filmmakers who are concerned about maintaining the characters' identities and dignity. Others will grouse about missed opportunities and will cringe at even the most minor missteps. But, with a project like this, there's no pleasing everyone.Meanwhile, two newcomers have arrived at Professor X's school. They are Rogue (Anna Paquin), a frightened teenage girl who has recently discovered that she cannot touch another human being without draining that person's life energy, and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), a fast healer with an adamantine skeleton and retractable, razor-sharp claws that spring from the backs of his hands. These two, who have a big brother/little sister type of bond, are deciding whether to join Professor X when a move by Magneto takes matters out of the realm of free choice.Character development is admittedly spotty, with some individuals getting little more than token screen time, but there is enough here for us to care about the core group of mutants. The best realized personalities are Magneto, Wolverine, and Rogue. The middle ground is occupied by Professor X and Jean Grey. The flattest are Cyclops, Storm, and Magneto's henchmen. The action sequences, especially the climactic one, are choreographed with flair, with a few Matrix influences to be found. Plus, although Magneto's plan is a little silly, it's nice to find a villain who is not a megalomaniac. Unlike the average James Bond bad guy, Magneto isn't interested in world domination. Instead, he wants to avoid living through a second holocaust. As a boy, he endured the Nazi death camps in Poland. As an adult, he doesn't intend for the human persecution of mutants to reach a similar level of intolerance. Thus, in many ways, the story that unfolds here is an allegory about difficulties of combating prejudice and bigotry.Compared to Batman, the most recent comic-turned-movie franchise to capture the public's imagination, X-Men is an improvement. Style, not story, was that series' forte. The world created by Singer and his craftsmen is not as strange and gothic as Gotham City, but it is no less visually interesting. The climax, which involves the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, utilizes flawless, set-based duplications of reality. The giant spherical room within Professor X's school is impressive, as are chambers in Magneto's abode, and the glass-and-plastic apartment shown later in the film.X-Men do not, however, top Superman as the most engaging superhero motion picture. The 1978 Richard Donner feature possessed an epic scope that X-Men doesn't approach(Nor, in all fairness, does it aspire to.). This is a much simpler action/adventure effort, as the relatively short running length of 100 minutes betokens. In terms of its plot structure and intent, X-Men have modest goals, most of which it meets. The prime characters are introduced, thrown into the maelstrom of an adventure that allows each of them a personal highlight, and then sent on their way.For the role of Professor X, there couldn't be better choice than Patrick Stewart, whose bald head alone made him the pick of almost every X-Men fan. Having portrayed Star Trek's Captain Picard for more than a decade, Stewart is used to both appearing in science fiction adventures and playing a cult icon, and appears at ease. It's too bad he isn't accorded additional screen time. Ian McKellen, soon to don the robe of Gandalf in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings, brings his considerable talent to bear in the role of Magneto, creating a more complex and conflicted villain than one might normally expect in this sort of movie. As Wolverine, Hugh Jackman is suitably feral and captures some of the mannerisms of his comic book inspiration. Anna Papuan explores the emotional pain and loneliness of the young Rogue, who is forever forbidden intimate human contact. Famke Janssen, James Marsden, and Halle Berry all look and act their parts, at least within the constraints of their limited screen time. They are supporting players with limited duties. Most viewers will see X-Men as delivering what's expected of any summer movie. There are several in-jokes designed specifically for X-Men fans, none of which will confound someone who has never been exposed to this world before. X-Men bring to the screen the elements that any live comic book adaptation should offer, resulting in a lightly enjoyable cinematic experience. For mid-season escapism, X marks the spot.。
