At the end of the passage you’ll hear five questions about what was said. Listen carefully and choose the best answer to each question.A few years ago it was fashionable to speak of a generation gap, a division between young people and their elders. Parents complained that their children did not show them proper respectand obedience, while children complained that their parents did not understand them at all.One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their own life-styles. In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and approve of and often to continue the family occupation. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family home at an early age, and choose occupations different from those of their parents. In our modern society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did; to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. But often they discover that they have very little in common with each other. Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap between generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become obsolete overnight. The best way to narrow the gap is that parents and children should be mutually respected. Questions 11 to 15 are based on the passage you’ve just heard.11. What does this passage mainly tell us?12. Which one is the most important cause of the generation gap?13. What are children expected to do in a more traditional society?14. What is children’s young people attitude towards elderly people’s life experiences?15. How do young people narrow the gap?Unit 10Part I Listening ComprehensionSection A 1. D 2. B 3. C 4. D 5. CSection B 6. D 7. A 8. D 9. B 10. DSection C 11. A 12. B 13. C 14. C 15. CSection D1. three2.

Certainly Newton considered some theoretical aspects of it in his writings, but he was reluctant to go to sea to further his work. For most people the sea was remote, and with the exception of early intercontinental travelers or others who earned a living from the sea, there was little reason to ask many questions about it, let alone to ask what lay beneath the surface. The first time that the question‘What is at the bottom of the oceans?’had to be answered with any commercial consequence was when the laying of a telegraph cable from Europe to America was proposed. The engineers had to know the depth profile of the route to estimate the length of cable that had to be manufactured. It was to Maury of the US Navy that the Atlantic Telegraph Company turned, in 1853, for information on this matter. In the 1840s, Maury had been responsible for encouraging voyages during which soundings were taken to investigate the depths of the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Later, some of his findings aroused much popular interest in his book The Physical Geography of the Sea.The cable was laid, but not until 1866 was the connection madepermanent and reliable. At the early attempts, the cable failed and whenit was taken out for repairs it was found to be covered in living growths,a fact which defied contemporary scientific opinion that there was nolife in the deeper parts of the sea.Within a few years oceanography was under way. In 1872 Thomson leda scientific expedition, which lasted for four years and brought homethousands of samples from the sea. Their classification and analysisoccupied scientists for years and led to a five-volume report, the lastvolume being published in 1895.The passage implies that the telegraph cable was built mainly_____________. It was ____________ that asked Maury for help in oceanographicstudies. D. the company which proposed to lay anundersea cable问题34得2 分,满分2 分The aim of voyages Maury encouraged in the 1840s was___________. C. to measure the depths of twooceans问题35得2 分,满分2 分‘Defied’in the 5th paragraph probably means ___________. This passage is mainly about ___________.所选答案: A. the beginnings ofoceanography。
