at the age of意为“在……岁时”,of后接基数词,有时也可省略为“at+基数词”或“at age+基数词”。
at(the age of)/at age…可位于句首或句末,在功能上相当于when引导的时间状语从句。
fall ill意为“生病”,fall用作系动词,意为“进入(某种状态)”,其后常接形容词作表语。
fall ill是短暂性动作,不能和表示一段时间的状语连用,若与表示一段时间的状语连用,应改为表示持续状态的be ill或be sick。
ability在本句中为不可数名词,意为“能力”。
have the ability to do sth.意为“有做某事的能力”;lose the ability to do sth.意为“失去做某事的能力”。
while, when, as
三者都可表示“当……的时候”,引导时间状语从句,它们之间有共同点,也有不同之处。
(1)while引导的从句中的谓语动词常用延续性动词,表示从句的动作正在进行时,主句的动作发生了。
(2)when和as引导的时间状语从句中的谓语动词可以是延续性动词,也可以是非延续性动词。
(3)as引导时间状语从句时,常强调主从句谓语动词表示的动作的同时性,含有“一边……一边……”的意思。
