湖北成人学位英语考试《阅读理解》强化练习(3)For centuries Dutch engineers have been fighting a war against water. Their main ene-my is the sea. A large part of the country is below sea level. In fact,Holland is also called the “Netherlands” which means “low land.” Very tall a nd strong walls, called dykes, have built to keep out the sea. But in very rough weather the sea may suddenly burst through a dyke. Great damage can be caused by floods when this happens.Three large rivers are also part of the problem.-They flow through Holland into the North Sea. They have cut many passages across the country. At low tides, the rivers flow into the sea as usual, But at high tide, the sea can flow into the rivers! This is because the land is so low.The battles against the water never end, but they have made Holland a bigger and bigger country. In order to prevent floods, the engineers take, or reclaim, land that was under water. The Dutch have been reclaiming land for seven hundred years.Land is usually reclaimed from a passage between islands. Two dykes are built across the passage, so they block the water between them. Then the engineers dig long canals and pump the water into them. At low tide, the canals empty the water into the sea.Because the land is so low, water from the sea and rivers can rise up through the ground. For this reason, the pumps continue working. The dykes contain gates, and through these the water is pumped out. In manyparts of Holland, pumps must be working all the time. If they stopped, there will be very bad floods.A piece of reclaimed land is called polder, and Holland has thousands of polders. Some are very large, but others are quite small. There are farms on many of the polders. Corn and other crops grow well on the drained land, and it gives good grass for cattle. Many small towns and villages stand on polders. Even′Amsterdam′s great airport was built on reclaimed land.1.Water is the main threat to Holland because__________.A.the sea is too roughB.the land is lower than the seaC.the dykes can not keep the floods outD.the weather is too rough答案:B2.Holland is threatened not only by the sea,but also by__________.A.the floods from broken dykesB.the three riversC.the low tides and high tidesD.many passages of the rivers答案:B解析:细节判断题。
2021年成人英语三级学位英语阅读理解练习题(五)Interact use appears to cause a drop in psychological health, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more bad feelings and loneliness than those who was online less frequently, the two-year study showed. Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others. The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in psychological health, researchers hypothesized (推测). Faceless, bodiless“virtual”(虚的) communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider worldthrough the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.“But it' s important to remember this is not about the technology, it' s about how it is used,”says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study' s sponsors (发起人). "It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology. "1. King would later write that his unanticipated call to leadership "happened so quickly that I did not have time to think in through." "It is probable that if I had, I would have declined the nomination."Although press reports at the time focused on his inspiring oratory, King was actually a reluctant leader of a movement initiated by others.(The boycott began on Dec. 5 1955.) His subsequent writings and private correspondence reveal man whose inner doubts sharply contrast with his public persona. In the early days of his involvement, King was troubled by telephone threats, discord within the black community and Montgomery's "get tough" policy, to which king attributed his jailing on a minor traffic violation. One night, as he considered ways to "move out of thepicture without appearing a coward," he began to pray aloudand, at that moment, "experienced the presence of the God as I had never experienced Him before."He would later admit that when the boycott began, he was not yet firmly committed to Gandhian principles. Although he had been exposed to those teachings in college, he had remained skeptical. "I thought the only way we could solve our problem of segregation was an armed revolt," he recalled. "I felt that the Christian ethic of love was confined to individual relationships."Only after his home was bombed in late January did king reconsider his views on violence. (At the time, he was seeking a gun permit and was protected by armed bodyguards.) Competing with each other to influence King were two ardent pacifists: Bayard Rustin, a black activist with the War Resisters League, and the Rev. Glenn E. Smiley, a white staff member of the Fellowship of Reconciliation. Rustin was shocked to discover a gun in King's house, while Smiley informed fellow pacifists that King's home was "an arsenal."1. What did King think of his nomination as leader of the Montgomery Boycott?A) He hadn't expected it. B) He had to think about it carefully.C) He would refuse to accept it.D) He was prepared to accept it.2. Why was King unwilling to lead the movement atfirst?A) Because he doubted if the boycott would be successful.B) Because he was troubled with a traffic accident at that time.C) Because he thought he was too young to be a leader.D) Because he himself didn't start the boycott.3. Which of the following is Not mentioned as something that happened at the beginning of the black people's movement?A) King was put into prison.B) Black people disagreed with each other.C) King's armed revolt proposal was turned down.D) Black people found it hard to accept the policy pursued in Montgomery.4. Which of the following was the immediate cause that made King change his view on violence?A) The education he received in college.B) The attack of his home.C) The influence of two active non-violence advocates.D) The verdict of the Supreme Court.5. In Paragraph 4, the last sentence "King's home was 'an arsenal'" meansA) King's home was a place where people got together.B) King's home was a place where people tested bombs.C) King's home was a place where weapons were stored.D) King's home was a place where bombs exploded.正确答案:ADCBC2021年成人英语三级学位英语阅读理解练习题(三)Early or Later Day CareThe British psychoanalyst John Bowlby maintains that separation from the parents during the sensitive "attachment" period from birth to three may scar a child's personality and predispose to emotional problems in later life. Some people have drawn the conclusion from Bowlby's work that children should not be subjected to day care before the age of three because of the parental separation it entails, and many people do believe this. But there are also arguments against such a strong conclusion.Firstly, anthropologists point out that the insulated love affair between children and parents found in modern societies does not usually exist in traditional societies. For example, in some tribal societies, such as the Ngoni, the father and mother of a child did not rear their infant alone - far from it. Secondly, common sense tells us that day care would not be so widespread today if parents, care-takers found children had problems with it. Statistical studies of this kind have not yet been carried out, and they have uniformly reported that day care had a neutral orslightly positive effect on children's development. But tests that have had to be used to measure this development are not widely enough accepted to settle the issue. But Bowlby's analysis raises the possibility that early day care has delayed effects. The possibility that such care might lead to, say, more mental illness or crime 15 or 20 years later can only be explored by the use of statistics. Whatever the long-term effects, parents sometimes find the immediate effects difficult to deal with. Children under three are likely to protest at leaving their parents and show unhappiness. At the age of three or three and a half almost all children find the transition to nursery easy, and this is undoubtedly why more and more parents make use of child care at this time. The matter, then, is far from clear-cut, though experience and available evidenceindicate that early care is reasonable for infants. 练习:1. Which of the following statements would Bowlby support?A) Statistical studies should be carried out to assess the positive effect of day care for children at the age of three or older. B) Early day care can delay the occurrence of mental illness in children.C) The first three years of one's life is extremely important to the later development of personality.D) Children under three get used to the life at nursery schools more readily than children over three.2. Which of the following is derivable from Bowlby's work?A) mothers should not send their children to day care centers until they are three years or older.B) Day care nurseries have positive effects on achild's development.C) A child sent to a day care center before the age of three may have emotional problems in later life.D) Day care would not be so popular if it has noticeable effects on a child's personality. 3. It is suggested that modern societies differ from traditional societies in thatA) the parents-child relationship is more exclusive in modern societies.B) a child more often grows up with his/her brothers or sisters in traditional societies. C) mother brings upchildren with the help of her husband in traditional societies.D) children in modern societies are more likely to develop mental illness in later years. 4. Which of the following statements is NOT an argument against Bowlby's theory?A) many studies show that day care has a positive effect on children's development.B) Day care is safe, otherwise there wouldn't be so many nursery schools.C) Separation from parent for very young children is common in some traditional societies. D) Parents find the immediate effects of early day care difficult to deal with.5. Which of the following best expresses the writer's attitude towards early day care?A) Children under three should stay with heir parents.B) Early day care has positive effects on children's development.C) The issue is controversial and its settlement calls for the use of statistics.D) The effects of early day care on children areexaggerated and parents should ignore the issue.正确答案:CAADC2021年成人英语三级学位英语阅读理解练习题(二)Dining CustomEvery land has its own dining custom, and the United States is no exception. Americans feel that the first rule of being a polite guest is to be on time. If a person is invited to dinner at 6:30, the hostess expects him to be there at 6:30 or not more than a few minutes after. Because she usually does her own cooking, she times the meal so that the coffee and meat will be at their best at the time she asks the guest to come. If he is late, the food will not be so good, and the hostess will be disappointed. When the guest cannot come on time, he calls his host or hostess on the telephone, gives the reason, and tells at what time he thinks he can come.As guests continue to arrive, the men in the group stand when a woman enters and remain standing until she has found a chair. A man always rises when he is beingintroduced to a woman. A woman does not rise when she is being introduced either to a man or a woman unless the woman is much older. When the guests sit down at a dinner table, it is customary for the men to help the ladies by pushing their chairs under them.Even an American may be confused by the number of knives, forks, and spoons beside his plate when he sits down to a formal dinner. The rule is simple, however, use them in the order in which they lie, beginning from the outside. Or watch the hostess and do what she does. The small fork on the outside on the left is for salad, which is often served with the soup. The spoon on the outside at the right is for soup, and so on. Sometimes there is a separate little knife, called a butter spreader, on a small bread-and-butter plate at the left. As the bread is passed, each guest puts his piece on the bread-and-butter plate.1. We don't know what our stone Age ancestors knew about plants, but from what we can observe of preindustrial societies that still exist, a detailed learning of plants and their properties must be extremely ancient. This is logical. Plants are the basis of the food pyramid for all living things, even for other plants. They have always been enormously important to the welfare of people, not only for food, but also for clothing, weapon, tools, dyes, medicines, shelter, and many other purposes. Tribes living today in the jungle of the Amazon recognize hundreds of plants and know many properties of each. To them botany has no name and isprobably not even recognized as a special branch of "knowledge" at all.Unfortunately, the more industrialized we become the farther away we move from direct contact with plants, and the less distinct out knowledge of botany grows. Yet everyone comes unconsciously on an amazing amount of botanical knowledge, and few people will fail to recognize a rose an apple or an orchid. When our Neolithic ancestors, living in the Middle East about 10,000 years ago, discovered that certain grasses could be harvested and their seeds planted for richer yields the next season, the first great step in a new association of plants and humans was taken. Grains were discovered and from them flowed the marvel of agriculture: cultivated crops. From then on, humans would increasingly take their living from the controlled production of a few plants, rather than getting a little here and a little there from manyvarieties that grew wild and the accumulated knowledge of tens of thousands of years of experience and intimacy with plants in the wild would begin to fade1. It is logical that a detailed learning of plants and their properties must be extremely ancient.A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned2. People cannot survive without plants.A. RightB. WrongC. 湖北省成人本科学位英语模拟试卷4(题后含答案及解析)题型有: 2. Reading Comprehension 3. V ocabulary and Structure 5. Cloze 6. Translation 7. WritingPart I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. In ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates for the doctor degree. Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same question, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modem industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Generally, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an “ objective” test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like correct answers to students who have not learned the material properly.1.In the Middle Ages students( ).A.took objective testsB.specialized in one subjectC.were timed by electric clocksD.never wrote exams正确答案:D解析:细节题。

成人本科学位英语阅读理解专项强化真题试卷39(题后含答案及解析)题型有:1.One study shows that Americans prefer to answer with a brief “Yes”, “No”, “Sure”, or the very popular “Yeah”rather than with a longer reply. (76) But brief replies do not mean Americans are impolite or unfriendly to some extent. Very often, Americans are in a hurry and may greet you with a single word “Hi”, indeed; this is a greeting you will hear again and again during your stay in the United States. It is used by everyone, regardless of rank, age or occupation. However, those who are accustomed to longer greetings may require a little more time before they feel comfortable with American simple talk. Americans sometimes use plain talk when they are uncomfortable. (77) If people praise them or thank them in an especially polite way, they may become uncomfortable and not know what to say in reply. They don’t want to be impolite or rude, you can be sure that they liked what was said about them. Except for certain holidays, such as Christmas, Americans don’t usually give gifts. Thus, you will find Americans embarrassed as they accept gifts, especially if they have nothing to give in return. They are generally a warm but informal people.1.The fact that Americans like shorter answers tells us ______.A.they reply very quickly in a hurryB.they choose words too carefullyC.they like replying brieflyD.they want to be as polite as they can正确答案:C解析:本题考查考生对细节的把握。

Tasks that puzzle the most advancedsupercomputer--recognizing a face, reading a handwritten note--are child′ s play. Most important, unlike any ordinary computer, the brain can learn from its mistakes. Researchers have tried for years to program computers to imi-tate the brain′s abilities, but without success. Now a growing number of designers believe they have the answer: if a computer is to work more like a person and less like an over-grown calculator it must be built more like a brain, which distributes information across a vast interconnected web of nerve cells or neurons.Ordinary computers work by following a chainlike sequence of detailed instructions.Although very fast, their processors can perform only one task at a time. This approach works best in solving problems that can be broken down into simpler logical pieces. The pro-cessors in a neural-network computer,by contrast, form a network much like the nerve :cells in the brain. Since these artificial (人造的) neurons are interconnected, they can share infor-mation and perform tasks at the same time. Thistwo-dimensional approach works best at rec-ognizing patterns.Instead of programming a neural-network computer to make decisions, its maker trains it to recognize patterns in any solution to a problem by repeatedly feeding examples to the machine.Neural networks come in all shapes and sizes. Until now most existed as software simu-lations (模拟品) because redesigning computer chips took a lot of time and money. By exper-imenting with different approaches through software rather than hardware, scientists have been able to avoid costly mistakes.1.It can be inferred from the first paragraph that acomputer__________.A.can recognize a faceB.cannot learn from its mistakesC.cannot follow detailed instructionsD.can read a handwritten note答案:B2.Which of the following is NOT true about an ordinary computer?A.It must be programmed before it works.B.It can only solve one problem at a time.C.It is good at solving problems that can be broken down into simpler logical pieces.D.It is trained to make decisions.答案:D解析:从其次段开头这句,Ordinary computers work by following a chainlike sequence of detailed instructions(电脑的工作原理就是遵循一系列具体的指令),可知选项A是正确的表达。

In fact,Holland is also called the "Netherlands" which means "low land." Very tall and strong walls, called dykes, have built to keep out the sea. But in very rough weather the sea may suddenly burst through a dyke. Great damage can be caused by floods when this happens.Three large rivers are also part of the problem.-They flow through Holland into the North Sea. They have cut manypassages across the country. The dykes contain gates, and throughthese the water is pumped out. In many parts of Holland, pumps must be working all the time.

湖北成人学位英语考试:阅读理解练习(1) Concern with money, and then more money, in order to buy the conveniences and luxuries of modern life, has brought great changes to the lives of most Frenchmen. More people are working than ever before in France. In the cities the traditional leisurely midday meal is disappearing. Offices, shops, and factories are discovering the greater efficiency of a short lunch hour in company lunchrooms. In almost all lines of work emphasis now falls on ever-increasing output. Thus the “typical” Fr enchman produces more, earns more, and buys more consumer goods than his counterpart of only a generation ago. He gains in creature comforts and ease of life. What he loses to some extent is his sense of personal uniqueness, or individuality. Some say that France has been Americanized. This is because the United States is a world symbol of the technological society and its consumer products. The so-called Americanization of France has its critics. They fear that “assembly-life” will lead to the disappear ance of the pleasures of the more graceful and leisurely (but less productive) old French style. What will happen, they ask, to taste the elegance, and the cultivation of the good things in life—to joy in the smell of a freshly picked apple,a stroll(散步)by the river,or just happy hours of conversation in a local cafe?Since the late 1950’s life in France has indeed taken on qualities ofrush, tension, and the pursuit of material gain. Some of the strongest critics of the new way of life are the young, especially university students. They are concerned with the future, and they fear that France is threatened by the triumph of this competitive, goods-oriented culture. Occasionally, they have reacted against the trend with considerable violence. In spite of the critics, however, countless Frenchmen are committed to keeping France in the forefront of the modern economic world. They find that the present life brings more rewards, conveniences, and pleasures than that of the past. They believe that a modem, industrial France is preferable to the old.1.Which of the following is Not related to the new French way of life?A. Shorter lunch hour.B. Greater output.C. Creature comforts.D. Leisurely cafe talk.参考答案:D详解:答案D.从第一段三、四句可知,A、B两项是法国新的生活方式所带来的结果。
[17] 学位英语:2021年阅读理解分析2021年阅读理解真题I knew a man who was asked to be the new dean (院长) of the college of business of a large university. When he first arrived, he studied thesituation the college faced and felt that what it needed most was money. He recognized that he had a unique capacity to raise money, and he developed a real sense of vision about fund-raising as his primary function. This created a problem in the college because past deans had focused mainly on meeting day-to-day faculty needs. this new dean was never there . He was running around the country trying to raise money for research .But he was not attending to the day-to-day things as the previous dean had. The faculty, who were used to working with the person at the top , had to work through his administrative assistant. The faculty became so upset with his absence that they sent a delegation to the president of the univerisity to demand a new dean or a fundamental change in his leadership style . the president , who knew what the dean was doing, said. “relax, he h as a good administrative assistant. Give him some more time”Within a short time. The money started pouring in and the faculty began to recognize the vision . it wasn’t long until every time they saw the dean, they would say “get out of here!we don’t w ant to see you. Go out and bring in more funds. The college student most people think of usually range in age from 18-21,and are most often away from home for thefirst time. As a result , they now have choices and no parent to tell them what to do . They are responsiblefor their own lives, needing to learn to manage their time and find a job, while attending school. They enter this new world with the anticipation of freedom, fun and a good job after graduation. The new faces in the college are usually 30 years old or older ,and are returning to school after several years away. They are starting their college education, after raising a family and are now ready to do something for themselvees. Their lives are considerably different from their younger classmates. They have been on their own for a while , and are concerned about family, responsibilities, work, and the adjustment of being back in school after some years . Most importan to them are the hopes of a new career or a job promotion after they graduate.Though they may come to college for different reasons, the resulet is the same. The dykes contain gates, and throughthese the water is pumped out. In many parts of Holland, pumps must be working all the time. Broadband technology is seen as the key to the new digital economy. In this rapidly changing world, media and technology information can be sent via phone calls and downloads like music, graphics, business information or films. The simpler the information, the smaller the package and the narrower the bandwidth needed to deliver it.Broadband is used for high speed Internet connections at a fixed monthly rate. It turns an existing telephone lineinto a high speed digital line capable of carrying data up to 40 times conventional modem speeds. Any download is available at the click of a mouse—there is no dial-up as there is with standard Internet Service Providers. For home owners and fam-ilies there are many advantages. One of the most important is simultaneous (同时的) access to both telephone lines and the Internet. No queues and no delay. For businesses, broadband can improve customer relations and provide direct access to corporate e-mails and databases.Entire operations can go online.1.The function that broadband technology has on the new digital economy is__________.A.furtherB.criticalC.costlyD.global答案:B【答案详解】逻辑推理题。
