1.Warm-up activities

Introductory Remarks:

Step 1: Show some pictures and watch a video, discuss in groups.

Step 2:

1.Are you familiar with Bill Gates? Please say something about him.

2.Please list some other successful persons’ names and give a brief comment on them.

3.People often say that family education plays an important role in one’s life, what’s your opinion about it?

II. Understanding the text

1. Analyze the structure of the passage.

2. Introduce the main idea of the Text A. Explain and illustrate the cultural background and language points in the text.

3. Guide students to the correct use of the words, expressions in the text through doing the related exercises.

4. Lead discussions among students on the text and the topic of successful persons.

III. Detailed studies of the text

1.counteract vt.to do something in order to reduce the bad effects of something, or to defend yourself against them

抵抗,抵制,阻碍,打破(计划)

They will counteract the effects of his bad influence.

他们要清除他的不良影响。

We must counteract extremism in the party.

我们应该抵制党内的极端主义。

Our bodies produce antibodies to counteract disease.

我们的身体能产生抗体以抵抗疾病。

2.drew up: to prepare a written document起草,草拟(文件)

He drew up a brief for his speech. 他起草了一份讲话的概要。

The two countries drew up a peace treaty after the war ended.

战争结束后,两国起草了一份和平协议。

The police drew up a blacklist of wanted terrorists.

警方拟就一份通缉恐怖分子的黑名单。

3.in detail: covering all the information 详细地

He told us the accident in detail. 他详细地把事故讲给我们听。

We’ll discuss the problem later in detail.

4.It has been said that in order to counteract this, Mary drew up weekly clothing plans for him.

此句中it是形式主语,that 从句是真实主语。

draw up: to prepare and write something such as a document or plan.

eg. A plan has been drawn up to deal with emergencies.

5. be noted for: be famous for 因……而出名

He was noted for his vigor. 他以精力充沛而出名。

He was noted for his politeness. 大家都知道他很有礼貌。

6. gain/get access to: get the right or opportunity to have or use something that will bring you benefits 获得;得到

Students must get access to good books.

学生必须有机会读到好书。

7. Funds were raised, mainly by parents, which enabled the school to gain access to a computer ---

a Program Data processor (PDP) --- through a teletype machine.
