怀履光简介怀履光的英文名字是威廉·查尔斯·怀特(William Charles White），于1873年8月22日生于英格兰德文郡的艾维布里奇，在兄妹10人中他排行第一。
1881年全家移居加拿大，定居安大略省诺伍德镇。
怀履光的父母是圣公会教徒，要求孩子严守教规，这使他从小就受到虔诚的基督教教育。
怀履光18岁高中毕业后，即离开家乡去外地，在基督教青年会工作，但他的愿望是将来能从事神职工作。

不久他便着手编写《建宁方言英语词典》，该词典于1901年由福州的一家出版社出版。
1899年，怀履光在福州不列颠公众教堂由香港主教按立为牧师。
1901年被派到闽侯传教。
他在教区大院里建立了一所男子寄宿小学；亦在附近麻风病人居住区为病人子弟开办了一所学校，自己继续行医。
他还与其他传教士合作，帮助鸦片吸食者戒毒。

加拿大圣公会决定按立怀履光为主教领导该地宣教工作。

Norman Bethune really cared about helping poor people who couldn't afford medical care.Even as a student, he would go to poor neighborhoods and treat sick people for free. One time, he was out delivering a baby and the family had no money to pay him. Norman didn't care - he just wanted to help the mom and baby. That's the kind of caring person he was.After finishing school, Norman Bethune worked at hospitals in Montreal and other cities. He could have made a lot of money as a fancy doctor for rich people. But instead, he chose to open up a small clinic in a poor area to treat patients for free or very little cost. Norman didn't care about getting rich. His only goal was helping people in need.In 1936, there was a terrible war going on in Spain between the government and rebel groups. Hospitals were getting bombed and they really needed doctors to help treat all theinjured people. Norman performed surgery after surgery, sometimes operating for 20 hours straight! He would even roll up his sleeves to physically carry wounded soldiers to safety when no stretchers were available.The people of China loved Norman Bethune for his selfless work ethic and the way he cared about every patient, no matter if they were just a poor farmer or an important official. He became a hero and bright symbol of hope during some of China's darkest hours of that terrible war.Sadly, Norman's time in China was cut short after he cut his finger during surgery. Back then they didn't have antibiotics, so a small infection turned deadly.
