A(原创)You never forget your first whale. The impact it makes upon you is huge and life is never quite the same again. My first whale was a 40ft grey, off the coast of California in 1979, and I’ve been a whale addict ever since. Now I have to go whale watching re gularly just to survive normal daily life.I may be crazy but I am certainly not alone. The world is filled with whale watchers: since its beginnings in the mid-fifties, whale watching has grown dramatically and now more than 13 million people join organized whale watching trips every year.As a faithful whale watcher, all your holidays center on whales. The only books you read are ones about whales; you wear whale T-shirts, and every time you meet your friends you talk about whales. So what is it about these larger-than-life animals that makes them so special? Their enormous size is one possible explanation: imagine sitting in a small boat next to a blue whale almost as long as a Boeing 737.The fact that we know so little about them is another possibility: modern technology has taken us to the moon and beyond, yet we are only just beginning to understand these extraordinary forms of intelligent life on our own planet.Planning and patience are just two essential requirements for successful whale watching. Planning is needed because there are certain whale hot spots—where you have the best chance of seeing them—and because the larger species tend to be on their wayfrom feeding areas to breeding grounds, so rarely do they stay in one place for more than a few months at a time.Patience is necessary because, even under the best conditions, whales can be tricky to find. However, most commercial whale watching trips have a surprisingly high success rate because they tend to concentrate on well-known whale populations at peak (最高的) seasons.21.What is the impact of the author’s first whale in his life?A.He has been crazy ever since.B.He can’t have a normal daily life.C.He has fallen in love with whale watching.D.He has organized watching trips every year.22.What will a faithful whale watcher do usually?A.Take part in whale forums.B.Wear only whale-themed clothes.C.Join an organization for whale watching every month.D.Pay much attention to whales in the holidays.23.Why is patience necessary in whale watching?A.Because it is very difficult to find these clever whales.B.Because whales are on their way to breeding grounds.C.Because the watching conditions are not always good.D.Because they have enormous size as big as a Boeing plane.24.What can be the best title of the passage?A.Tips on Whale WatchingB.Memories of Whale WatchingC.Whales Are Intelligent AnimalsD.Essential Requirements for Whale WatchingBOur bodies communicate what we feel loudly and clearly. Here are sometips for reading body language so that you can understand what is not being expressed by words. All of these tips are based on American interpretations (解释), so not all the body language here means the same in different cultures.A Cold Shoulder Is Really ColdI was meeting a friend and her husband. We were discussing our business. When the husband brought up an annoying topic that my friend didn’t want to discuss, she unknowingly turned her shoulder away from her husband. She didn’t notice what she had done, but he got the message and changed the topic. An Eye for an EyeIn the US, we expect people to look us in the eyes when they are talking to us. In a crowded elevator or on the street, someone that makes eye contact with you wants to start a conversat ion with you. If you are talking and don’t want to be interrupted (打断), look away at the end of a sentence. Eye movements help you control a conversation. On the other hand, if you want to talk and the speaker doesn’t give you the chance, stare at him and fix your eyes on him for a while. He will stop talking and let you speak. You’ve Got to Hand It to ThemPrince Charles often stands with his hands held together behind his back. This posture expresses a sense of superiority (优越), confidence and power. When the hands are held together in front of one’s body, the posture means a need for protection or help.25. From the passage, we learn that _________.A. our bodies can show most of our feelingsB. Americans are good at using body languageC. body language has no country limitsD. body language may mean differently in different places26. What did the author’s friend do when her husband brought up an annoying topic?A. She began to discuss business.B. She showed her husband a cold shoulder.C. She interrupted her husband rudely.D. She tried to change to another topic.27. If a man makes eye contact with you in an elevator, it shows that he___________.A. would like to talk to youB. is likely to control the conversationC. feels that you are dangerousD. is hoping to stop you talking28. Who would most probably hold his hands together in front of his bodyaccording to the passage?A. A confident prince.B. An armed soldier.C. A missing child.D. An old artist.C(原创)DEAR AMY: We recently had to put our cat down. It came out of the blue. We had no idea that he had health problems, and we woke up early one morning to the cat crying outpainfully. We immediately rushed him to the vet’s where the vet said that at b est treatment might lengthen his life by two to three months. We did not want to see him suffer, so we chose to kill the cat in a painless way.I am having a rough time! I cry when I am alone. I cry when I see pet commercials on television. I put away everything that reminds me of the cat. But the last sight of seeing the cat in pain plays over and over in my head. My kids seem alright with what has happened, but why am I struggling? It has only been one week since his passing, so I hope things will get better. Do you have any suggestions?Yours,SadDEAR SAD: There is no loss quite like the loss of a pet; these animals keep us company through important life passages and are beloved witnesses to our human lives.I understand your instinct to put away all of your cat’s things, but it may help you now to memorialize your pet by using these things. Each family member can write down favorite things about him or memories of him; read their memories aloud and put the papers inside his bowl. The idea is to replace those painful last memories with much more lively memories taking place over the most of the animal’s life.Time will then do its job, which is to affect your feelings. And then, when you’re ready, I hope you will adopt another animal and give it the opportunity to share your life.Yours,Amy29.Which of the following made the author’s family choose to kill the cat in a painless way?A.The cat had changed its color.B.The vet himself had no way to save its life.C.The family wouldn’t see it suffer in its later life.D.The cat suffered so much that it could die at any time.30.What does the underlined phrase mean in Paragraph 1?A.In the color of blue.B.Very sadly.C.All of a sudden.D.With much pain.31.What do we know from the last paragraph of Amy’s letter?A.The longer it is, the less you will feel sad about your pet.B.It is important to find a new pet as soon as possible.C.As time goes on, you will feel more sorrow about your pet.D.One can’t live a happy life without a pet around him.DScientists find that hard-working people live longer than average men and women. Career women are healthier than housewives. Evidence shows that the jobless are in poorer health than jobholders. An investigation shows that whenever the unemployment rate increases by 1%, the death rate increases by 2%. All this comes down to one point, work is helpful to health. Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy away from loneliness. Researches show that people feel unhappy, worried and lonely when they have nothing to do. Instead, the happiest are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their careers feel that they are happiest when they are working hard. Work serves as a bridge between man and reality. By work people come into contact with each other. By collective activity they find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss of work means the loss of everything. It affects man spiritually and makes him ill.Besides, work gives one a sense of fulfillment and a sense of achievement. Work makes one feel his value and status in society. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees hisstudents grow, they are happy beyond words. From the above we can come to the conclusion that the more you work the happier and healthier you will be. Let us work hard and study hard and live a happy and healthy life.32. The underlined word “average” in Paragraph 1 means ______.A. healthyB. lazyC. ordinaryD. poor33. The reason why housewives are not as healthy as career women is that ______.A. housewives are poorer than career womenB. housewives have more children than career womenC. housewives have less chance to communicate with othersD. housewives eat less food than career women34. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Paragraph 2?A. Busy people have nothing to do at home.B. High achievers don’t care about their families.C. There is no friendship and warmth at home.D. A satisfying job helps to keep one healthy.35. The best title for this passage may be _____.A. People Should Find a JobB. Working Hard Is Good for HealthC. People Should Make More Friends by WorkD. The Loss of Work Means the Loss of Everything第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

ARed Nose Day (RND) is a well-known event in the UK. The aim of the day is to raise money for a charity called Comic Relief which helps people in need in Africa and in the UK.Comic Relief was started in 1985 by the scriptwriter Richard Curtis. He wrote the famous films ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral' and ‘Notting Hill'. Richard's idea to start Comic Relief was as a response to the severe famine in Ethiopia. It's called Red Nose Day as on this day many people buy a plastic red nose to wear! The money made from selling red noses goes to the charity.Red Nose Day takes place every two years in the spring and is now so well established that many people consider it to be an unofficial national holiday. For example, many schools have non-uniform days. The slogan for the last RND was ‘Do Something Funny for Money' and the money that was collected helped to fund projects in the following areas, treating malaria(疟疾), education, and mental health. The BBC Red Nose Day pro gram raised £74.3 million! Money-raising events take place all over the country and many schools participate. People also donate money by post, in banks, by phone using a credit card and online. In the evening of Red Nose Day a telethon takes place on the BBC TV channels. It shows on and on a selection of the events of the day, as well as lots of comic sketches and reports of how the money raised will be spent. He reached out with his hand. The Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man’s weak ones, expressing a message of love and encouragement. The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sitbeside the bed.All through the night the young Marine sat there in the poorly lighted ward(病房), holding the old man’s hand and offering him words of lo ve and strength. Other exercises and rules teach concentration-Yogis feel this is the key to finding inner peace. This kind of concentration is called meditation.Yogis and many other people practice meditation. They say that it makes them feel relaxed and peaceful. Some people say that it makes them feel better-just as good exercise does. (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AFear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting(收缩) and pumping blood around their bodies, pared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed.Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said:"Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart."The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces.Dr Garfinkel said,"The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don't see-and guide whether we see fear."To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner(扫描仪) to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person's feeling of fear."We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain ‘speak' to each other to change our feelings and reduce fear,"Dr Garfinkel said."We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced,we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder."21.What is the finding of the study?A.One's heart affects how he feels fear.B.Fear is a result of one's relaxed heartbeat.C.Fear has something to do with one's health.D.One's fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear.22.The study was carried out by analyzing________.A.volunteers' heartbeats when they saw terrible picturesB.the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditionsC.volunteers' reactions to horrible pictures and data from their brain scansD.different pictures shown to volunteers and their heartbrain munication23.Which of the following is closest in meaning to"mechanism" in Paragraph 6?A.Order.B.System.C.Machine.D.Treatment.24.This study may contribute to________.A.treating anxiety and stress betterB.explaining the cycle of fear and anxietyC.finding the key to the heartbrain municationD.understanding different fears in our hearts and headsBA popular saying goes, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." However, that's not really true. Words have the power to build us up or knock us down. It doesn't matter if the words e from someone else' or ourselves—the positive and negative effects are just as lasting. We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We're usually too shy to admit it, though. In fact, more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. This "self-talk" helps us encourage ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying "Good job!"!Often, words e out of our mouths without thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner or harsh (刻薄的)and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.Words have power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn't pass this test, then it's better left unsaid.Words have power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊) and encourage others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.25.The main idea of the first paragraph is that______.A.words have a lasting effect on us.B.positive words give us confidenceC.negative words may let us downD.nothing but words will hurt us26.There is no need for us to feel shy when we talk to ourselves because _____.A.it does no harm to have "self-talk" when we are aloneB.talking to ourselves always gives us courageC.almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselvesD.we can benefit from talking to ourselves27.The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely______.A.criticize ourselvesB.praise ourselvesC.relax ourselvesD.amaze ourselves28.The author would probably hold the view that_____.A.encouraging words surely lead to harsh offersB.people will always remember friendly wordsC.it is better to think twice before talking to othersD.negative words may help us make more progressCWhen most of us look at our hands, we might notice that we need to clean, or stop biting our fingernails, and that's about it. But if you ask a doctor, he can see a whole lot more. Everything from poor diet and stress to serious kidney (肾) problems can be revealed by a glance at your fingernails. There are about 30 different nail signs that can be associated with medical issues, though may indicate more than one problem, according to Dr.Amy Derick, a clinical instructor of dermatology at Northwestern University. Here are five of the things a doctor can tell about your health based on your fingernails.People who aren't eating well and lack vitamin or dietary may have thinner than normal nails, which are more likely to break.Horizontal (水平的) lines are associated with serious physical stress. They frequently occur in people who have gone through chemotherapy(化疗).They can also occur after some illnesses, injuries, or with severe malnourishment(营养不良).Interestingly, there may be an altitude connection too. They've also been found in people who dove 1,000 feet and others who participated in an Everest exploration. Vertical (垂直的)lines, however, are generally not such a big deal. Some people are more genetically prone to them than others, but they're monly associated with aging. When people lack iron, their nails can turn spoon-like. Instead of curving down and covering the finger normally, they 'll start to rise up on the sides and front, like the part of a spoon that holds liquid.Kidney and liver problems can create "half-and-half nails", where one part of the nail is white and the other part dark or pink, according to Derick.Doctors note that because disease diagnosis is plex and some symptoms can be associated with different diseases, you should always see a medical professional if you are concerned about something you notice.29. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Doctors can tell us something about our health by looking at our nails.B. We should see a doctor if we find nails in bad condition.C. Chase was busy weighing each new bag of vegetables I collected. I handed him a bag of tomatoes and he walked over to the scale and waited patiently in line. Suddenly, an old man walked up behind Chase, and stepped before him, bumping Chase out of the way. Chase looked shocked and scared. Seeing this I left my shopping cart and walked over to Chase, saying loudly,"Are you all right, honey? I saw what that man did to you. That was very, very wrong."When the man finished weighing his bag,he turned around too quickly and all of his onions spilled out of his bag and onto the dirty floor. The three of us froze for a moment. Then I got down on my hands and knees and started collecting onions while the old man accepted them from my hands and put them back into his bag. After Chase and I retrieved all the onions, the old man walked away. We didn't discuss the event until we got back in the car.On the way home,Chase said through tears,"Mommy,I've a frustrating day. That man cut right in front of me. And we had to help him pick up his onions! Why did we do that? That didn't make any sense."I took a deep breath and said," Chase, that man seemed to have a very bad mood today. We should forgive him. I was also angry with that man for treating you rudely. I really wanted to kick him. But doing that doesn't make any sense. If we hadn't helped that old man, we might have felt good for a moment, but then I bet we would have felt really sorry for a long time. You and I have a lot of love to share. Maybe that man doesn't have much. People who behave badly still need love. ''A cheerful smile appeared on Chase's face. It was a smile of a promise kept. It was the best smile I had ever seen. God, it was a good moment. It may have been my best mommy moment ever.33.What did the old man do?A.He jumped the queue.B.He hit Chase on the head.C. But the whales currently face a major threat in their favorite feeding area. Ships carrying cargo (货物)sail in the same area at the same time. All too often, the whales’ paths and the ships’ travel lines overlap (重叠), and a ship will hit a whale.According to a new study, these ship strikes have become a serious threat to the over all population of the world’s blue whales. Only about 10,000 of the creatures still exist worldwide. Blue whales are the largest known animals ever to live on Earth. Even so, if hit by a container ship, a blue whale will likely die from its injuries. In 2007 alone, large ships killed five blue whales in the waters off San Francisco and Los Angeles, California. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says that because there are so few whales already, losing three to five from the Califor nia whale population every year is a significant loss. “The estimated population of blue whales in this part of the Pacific is 2,500”, says Sean Hastings, a NOAA analyst. “So every whale counts toward this species moving off the endangered-species list.”Now, marine scientists must figure out how to protect the whales from the giant container ships. One very simple program is already under way in the Santa Barbara Channel, a waterway that separates mainland California from the nearby Channel Islands. The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary has asked large container ships passing through the area to voluntarily slow down. Sailing slower will allow the ships‟crew (船员)more time to change course before hitting a whale.Several of the world’s larg est shipping lines are set to participate in the new program. For every ship that passes through the Santa Barbara Channel at or below the reduced speed of 12 knots (海里/小时), the company that owns the ship will be paid $2,500.32. From Paragraph 1, we can know that_____.A. people intend to illegally hunt blue whales for moneyB. large ships often carrying goods may pollute the seaC. the container ships may hit the blue whales frequentlyD. there is fewer fish in blue whales‟ favorite feeding area33. Why is the death of several whales regarded as significant loss to the world's blue whales?A. Because the number of the blue whales is so small.B. Because other blue whales will be scared away.C. Because blue whales are the largest animals in the world.D. Because many blue whales get killed throughout the year.34. According to Sean Hastings, it’s inferred that .A. the number of the blue whales is decreasing sharply.B. the blue whales are still on the endangered-species list.C. most of the world’s blue whales live in the Pacific Ocean.D. blue whales are often disturbed by other endangered creatures.35. What are the last three paragraphs mainly about?A. The basic responsibility of a sailor.B. Measures to protect the blue whales.C. The world’s largest shipping lines.D. Ways to slow down the speed of the ships.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
