Use of Symbolism in The Call of the Wild
Abstract: Symbolism came out in the middle of the 19th century. Nowadays, application of symbolism is more and more popular in fiction. As one branch of symbolism, the animal as symbols also attracts the writer’s attention. This thesis takes the animal as symbols for the theoretical framework. It analyzes the symbolic meaning of Buck who is the hero of Jack London’s The Call of the Wild. Through the alteration of Buck from a pet dog to a wild animal, it analyzes the symbolic meaning of humanity, society and the writer’s philosophical ideas that contains in Buck’s images. Thus the readers not only understand the theme of novel more comprehensively and profoundly, but also realize the originality of animal as symbols.

象征主义在《野性的呼唤》中的运用
摘要:象征主义起源于十九世纪中期的法国,近些年来,象征主义在文学中的应用已经越来越普遍了,而动物象征作为象征主义的一个分支,也是日趋受到作家的青睐。
本文则以动物象征手法为理论支撑,分析杰克伦敦的著名小说《野性的呼唤》中的主角——狼狗巴克所寓含的多重象征意义。
论文从巴克由宠物狗变为野性的狼的转变过程入手,通过巴克勇敢、机智以及对环境高度的适应能力的特征分析反映人性的、社会的和作者本身的哲学思想这三重象征意义,让读者在全全面、更深刻的理会作者的旨意的同时领悟到动物象征这一写作手法的独到之处。
