They were truly saints among ordinary people.I was one of the ten children my parents adopted. They rescued each of us from a life of poverty and loneliness. They were hardly able to restrain themselves from bringing home more children to care for.If they had the resources, they certainly would have. Most people do not realize how much they appreciated someone until they pass away. My sisters and brothers and I did not want this to happen before we uttered the words” Thank you” to our parents.Although we have all grown up and scattered about the country, we got back together to thank our parents. My brother tom undertook the task of organizing the event. Every Friday night, Mom and Dad have had the ham dinner special at the same restaurant for the last twenty years. That is where we waited without their knowing. When we first caught a glimpse of them coming across the street, we all hid underneath a big table. When they entered, we leapt out and shouted, “Thank you, Mom and Dad.” My brother tom presented them with a card and we all hugged. My dad pretended that he had known we were under the table all along.UNIT2 VWomen who exercise regularly need to be careful with what they eat. Researchers have found evidence that even moderate exercise can result in losing iron. They said that women who exercise regularly, especially in endurance activities, typically lose iron. In order to prevent this from becoming a problem, it is important that those women consume more meat or take supplements to replace the iron lost. Those who do not bother to get plentiful amounts of iron may begin to feel weak and tired. “If you can get the recommended daily allowance of iron in your diet, you will probably perform better,” said one diet specialist. ”One shortcoming of taking iron pills is that the pill form is not well absorbed and can sometimes make you sick. It is preferable that you try to remedy the deficiency by getting more iron-rich meats in your diet.”There are ways to help your body store away the iron it takes in. By getting plenty of Vitamin C, your body is able to process, or use, the iron better. Researchers acknowledge that ever yone’s body is different and the problem will be less serious for some. Because it is impossible to decide whether or not this could be a problem for you, health specialists say it is advisable to check your iron levels. Even when you can’t feel is, you ma y still have a problem.UNIT3 VWhile many private schools are focusing more on values, public schools are moving toward testing standards. The national government demands academic success and tests are taken as taken as a key measurement for a school’s pe rformance. Schools with low test scores face penalties such as a reduction in money to run their schools. And, even individual teachers are being graded on how they’re preparing theirstudents for these tests.“We have concentrated too much on teaching the kids how to take these tests,” commented one elementary school teacher. “We should be providing a more comprehensive curriculum to these kids. We should be cultivating leadership and curiosity. The trouble is that in poorer areas of the city like ours, kids start school less equipped to perform well. We have many obstacles to overcome before we can teach them basic subjects. All schools are not alike, so they shouldn’t be tested that way.”“The goal is to improve performance in schools that are not providing their students with tools for success,” said one government official. But if I have t choose one as the most useful, I’d choose “keep a balance”. When we were in high school, we spent almost all our time studying. There lacked a balance between social life and academic life in high school. It’s important to keep a balance between life and work because it will give us a sound mind in a sound body. Now we have much more free time, so we can join student organizations or go to different activities.2 Before I left for college my parents did have a talk with me. They told me how important college experience would be in my life. They told me about the opportunities that college education would open up to me. They told me to try to develop more interests and join some student clubs. The most impressive advice they gave me was that I should not only read books about my major; instead, they advised me to read as widely as possible. All these are very valuable pieces of advice.Scripts:Sarah: Hi I’m Sarah. I’m a student advisor at a university. I know the first year of college is always difficult. You have to adapt to a new environment, and learn to do everything on your own. To help make your transition just a little easier, I’m going to interview some senior students on campus let’s see what advice they can give you.Sarah: Hi Jennifer. What do you think is important to a freshman?Jennifer: I think it is very important to go to class regularly. It sounds easy, but oversleeping and missing that 8 o’clock morning class is very common. Try to go to class on time and regularly. You will learn the material in class, get to know the professors, and make friends with your classmates. You will also get important information from the professors about tests and exams.Sarah: Mark, do you agree with Jennifer?Mark: Absolutely. My advice is: Find a good place to study. It may be your dorm room or a corner of the library or a quiet classroom, but find a place that works best for you to get your work done. If you have trouble concentrating in your dorm, you need to find another place.Sarah: Nancy, what is our advice for freshmen?Nancy: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” My advice is to get involved on campus. A big problem for a lot of new students is that they miss home and they don't have a sense of belonging. The solution is to join a student organization, or a club, or a sports team. You will make new friends, learn new skills, and feel more connected to your school.Sarah: Excellent advice, Nancy. Simon, it seems you have something to say.Simon: Yes, I do. Well, I want to say you should keep a balance. College life is a mixture of social life and academic li fe. Don’t join too many student organizations or go to too many activities. Otherwise, you won’t have enough time to study. Of course, you should not become a book worm. The key is to keep a balance between fun and study.Sarah: They all give very useful tips. But let me add a few more. Take responsibility for yourself and your actions; take advantage of the learning resources on campus; stay healthy and eat right.I hope you will get the most out of your college experience.Reading comprehensionUnderstanding the text11. In the university I can acquire specialized knowledge about my major, and develop critical thinking and research skills. I will have the opportunities to meet and share ideas withpeople of different minds. I can gain a broader view of the world by meeting people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. And I will start my life journey of self-discovery, self-improvement, andself-fulfillment.2.Yes, absolutely. With a university education, a person will have more freedom and thereforemore choices. This education experience provides unlimited potential. Moreover, a university education provides the means for one to succeed. Not only will a person obtain knowledge and skills essential for his career development, but he will also develop an independent mind and be able to make right decisions on his own.3.I admire those who dropped out of university and yet have made fame for themselves byachieving big goals. Some people use those successful college dropouts as counterexamples to show their belief that a person can succeed even without a university education. Chances are that most people do not have the same mind, talent, determination, or opportunities as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg did; therefore, they might not be able to achieve success without having a university education. In fact, a university education will equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills which will help them to succeed.4.Nowadays education is getting more and more expensive, especially college education. Andthere are people who choose to give up education because of the high cost. But without education, one would not be able to acquire knowledge that an education will offer. In other words, they would be “ignorant”. The result would be that ignorant people will suffer even more or pay even more for being so. It is true that education is expensive, but if you try “ignorance”, the cost would be even higher5.To sample widely and challenge my self, I am going to venture out of my comfort zone and dowhat I have not had the courage to do. For instance, I will make friends with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. I will take a swimming class and learn how to swim. I wil attend unconventionallectures, join student clubs, and try all kinds of food. Most of all, I will do whatever it takes to make the most of the four years and try to become a well-rounded graduate.Language focusWords in use31 confidence2 explore3 emerged4 assume5 pose6 comprehensive7 resources 8 yield 9 inherited 10 transmitWord building4Words learned new words formed-uncover uncovereasy uneasy load unload-antapply applicant resist resistant account accountant -ifysimple amplify note notify quality qualify class classify51.classified2.assist3.resistant4.uncovered5.uneasy6.qualify7.unloading8.applicants9.simplified10.accountant11.notifiedbanked cloze61 D2 H 3A 4B 5M 6 F 7O 8 I 9 G 10 J Expressions in use71.got by2.make the most of3.in advance4.over time5.reap the benefits of6.all at once7.remind… of8.stand a chance of9.open the door to10.take pleasure insection Breading skills11. 新视野大学英语读写教程第二版第二册1-5单元课后作文答案UNIT 1A larger and larger part of society is expressing its concern about environmental protection. Active in their concern, teachers and students hold specific meetings to discuss environmental protection. Also, city planners take environmental problems into serious consideration. And, though reducing pollution can be expensive, factories often take every possible measure to do their part. Many people are concerned and active because air and water pollution affects everyone and makes it difficult for cities to survive and businesses to make a profit.UNIT 2Computers, just like any new technology, have a negative side. As more and more computers are used in production lines, many jobs are being taken over by computer-controlled machines. As a result, many workers are finding themselves jobless. This constitutes a threat to social security. Another problem is computer crimes. For example, some people are finding ways to break into the bank computer systems and transfer large sums of money to their own accounts. There have been many reports like this. One more negative effect of computers is that they bring about health problems.Sitting in front of computers all day undoubtedly affects people’s health. Back pain, wrist pain, failing eyesight, to name only a few.UNIT 3Many people place so much emphasis on success that they think any failure is bad. Failure is never pleasant because it hurts people. But in fact it can make positive contribution to our life once we learn how to make the best of it. We can learn from adisastrous party how to give a good one. And we can learn from an ill-chosen first house what to look for in a second. Even a total failure can give us fresh ideas or a change of direction. Repeated failures lead to success and prove to be beneficial to us as we experiment every day to find out the right way of doing things.UNIT 4Parents have to save a large amount of money for their children to study abroad. Apart from the international flight, they have to pay for their daily expense, such as food, shelter, entertainment, long-distance telephone calls, and clothing. In addition, the children should have some money ready to cover unexpected expenses.UNIT5There are many problems for mixed marriages. The number one reason is the cultural differences between the mixed couple, like those in customs and lifestyle. Many people have prejudice against mixed marriages. They often feelshocked to see people of different races get married and have doubts about such marriages. Wha t’s more, children from mixed marriages tend to be looked down upon or even badly treated by their peers. Mixed marriages face many trials, and as a result, mixed couples have higher divorce rates than couples of the same race.。

You should take the opportunity to get to know your teacher and classmates through email and by participating in Internet discussions. This will lead to a more positive and rewarding learning experience. It‟s true that learning the technology needed to take part in a class can at times be frustrating. For example , you may need to ask how to post your assignment on the Web. But , don‟ t worry ! If you have a problem ,ask for help. There‟s no such thing as a stupid question , so there is no need to be intimidated or embarrassed. Sharing insights and answers freely is what makes the Internet such a great medium for learning.Online classroom teacher Mike Roberts was asked about what he thought the greatest benefit of online learning is. “As a teacher , I need the students to ask questions so that I know what areas of my lessons need further explanation. That‟s what is great about teaching and learning over the Internet. In an ordinary classroom , time is limited , so students seem to ask the minimum amount of questions possible. But in the virtual classroom , students are always asking questions. They really seem to feel comfortable asking me for the information that they need. They also share a lot of valuable ideas with each other in a way that you don‟t usually see in a regular classroom.”Unit 2I have to write to you about the way you dress. I was a little intimidated to comment in person , so I am writing instead. I hope this doesn‟t upset you , but something has to be done. I must appeal to you to start dressing like a mom.Your unique sense of fashion is more like a sister‟s than a mother‟s. Personally , it‟s embarrassing to have a mom who dresses younger than I do. You wear T-shirts with torn jeans and your nose is pierced. My friends say it‟s strange , but I think they‟re being a little too negative. It‟s most likely because their boyfriends think you are pretty. Still , if you want me to have any friends in this community , it is vital that you remove the ring from your nose and start dressing like the other moms. Don‟t your peers ever show any concern?Don‟t you remember how horrible being a teenager can be ? I feel awful because I think people of my age would rather tale to you than to me. Last week at the shopping center , I had the absolutely worst experience of my life. The young man who took our money asked if you were my older sister. I thought he would likely ask you out if I hadn‟t said “Thanks , mom” to you. It was disgusting.Unit 3Some people just can‟t keep from giving. That was the way it was with my neighbor. Despite being crippled , she was very active. In fact , she seemed to do more for the community every day than I ever do in a year‟s time. I was always amazed at the pace she kept. On Mondays and Fridays , she worked at a college giving students guidance on what career to choose. On Tuesdays and Thursdays she helped out at a church that gave aid to people without homes. And on the weekends , she taught localkids who needed extra help with their schoolwork. And most importantly , she always had a positive attitude. I don‟t remember once hearing her complain about her troubles. The stresses of everyday life never seemed to bother her. Instead , she looked for every occasion she could find to spread her good humor around. I remember when I had just lost my job. She took a day off from work to spend time with me and listen to my friends. She never once became impatient with my complaints. She never acted like there was anything in this world more important than what I had to say. What I regret now is not having ever really done anything for her. I suppose she never needed it.Unit 4“So , how about your interview?”“The whole thing was bad from the beginning. I entered the room with confidence and gave the woman a strong handshake. She said I squeezed too hard and hurt her. I had a real hard time communicating with her after that.”“What do you mean?”“Well , it was pretty apparent that I failed to persuade her to hire me.I tried to make eye contact with her , but she kept looking away , which made me think she wasn‟t very focused or interested in what I was saying.”“I know what you mean. It can be so stressful being interviewed for a job. It‟s very depressing when you don‟t get any encouragement from the person who is asking you questions. But , don‟t worry. I …m sure you made a better impression than what you think.”“I don‟t think I impressed her at all. I was really bothered that she kept looking away , only interrupting me once in a while to throw in a word or two. I had to get her attention by making big gestures and changing the tone of my voice. I don‟t think I have ever had such a horrible experience.”Unit 5AIDS has emerged as the world‟s biggest problem over the past 25 years. The epidemic has touched the lives of people around the world , but no other place has been plagued like Africa. In Africa 20 million people were infected with the disease in 1999. That number continues to grow. Africa has accounted for nearly four out of five AIDS related deaths in the world. It is estimated that as of 1999 , 13 million children had lost their parents to AIDS. Although there is no cure , people in more developed countries can get medicine to help. In Africa though , most do not have access to new medicines. Most people neglect going to the doctor to find out if they have the disease. Because they have not been diagnosed with the illness , they continue to spread the disease without knowing it. Many men leave their rural homes to find work. Thisthreatens many people when the workers have AIDS and their behavior is not safe.In response to this crisis , many groups have set up programs. The goal is to educate people about AIDS. It is difficult to implement such programs , though , because of poor literacy rates. Some education programs have worked , though. One such project combats people‟s fear of getting tested for AIDS. Other campaigns focus on schooling for the poor.Unit 7When we stepped out of our front door last evening , something seemed different. I had this unusual feeling that something bad was going to happen. Our neighborhood isn‟t the kind of place where you would except to get robbed , but I guess you never know.My husband and I were walking across our lawn to our parked car when a man leaped from behind our bushes. The man pointed a gun at my husband and demanded that we give him our money. We of course did so , and then begged for mercy from him. He told us to get on our knees and then he shoved my husband‟s forehead into the dirt. He then grabbed my watch off my wrist and told me to lie down and close my eyes. I did not know if we were going to survive. Then I heard his footsteps fade away into the darkness , I went to the police , but I could n‟t identify the man because he was wearing a stocking over his head. They admitted that theyprobably wouldn‟t be able to do anything about it.Of course , we can afford to lose the money. I can find a replacement for the watch he took. What bothers me though , is how scared it made me to even go out in my own yard. I hate this feeling of fear.Unit 8Upon seeing an apple fall while walking , Isaac Newton was struck with an idea. His new concept was that the same force that pulled the apple to the ground guides the room. This simple story about Newton exemplifies what makes a great mind. Great minds like Newton just seem to be always open to new ideas. It is almost automatic for them. A bright idea often occurs to them even when it seems very odd. They understand with certainty that there is logic to be found even within the most unusual idea. Then they hold onto the idea. They turn it over and over in their mind until that element of logic reveals itself. This process involves combining what you know with what you experience in the world around you. In contrast , many very smart people have labored over one great idea throughout their lives. In the end though , they are unable to unlock the mystery of what it takes to be a genius. What is it that they have omitted in their search? They have simply forgotten to observe the new combinations being formed in the unconscious. They have employed only their conscious mind without giving time for their unconscious mind to provide the answers. This is particularly true of those who work too hard. They might be well advised to take a little walk every once in a while. Unit 10What‟s more important to you , money , a comfortable life , or self-respect? Many people believe that we are living in an age where values are in decline. They say that a standard for morality has been replaced by self-interest. Some people even predict the people of this earth will soon be punished and that disasters will destroy much of the civilization today. Most disagree with such conclusions , but they do think that it is time to stop our excessive ways.A non-religious woman from California commented , “I do believe that a moral compass should guide our actions. We share this planet and we need to keep the values like integrity and treat each other with respect. There is a significant need for each inhabitant of this world to take a good look at how they are behaving.Another man from New York said , “It‟s not enough to be a good person in your heart. We have to demonstrate our good intentions through our actions. There is plenty of temptation out there. It often causes people to give in to convenience instead of doing what is right. I have faith that if people just start following their conscience instead of what‟s easy , things will improve. We are all going to be faced with some tough decisions. I think we‟re ready for the challenge ,though.”。
