There are low-qualityschools just as there are low-quality businesses. We have no duty to save them simplybecause they exist. But many promising institutions that deserve to continue are threatened. Theyare doing a fine job educationally, but they are caught in a financial squeeze, withno way to reduce rising cost or increase income significantly. Raising tuitiondoesn’t bring in more income, for each time tuition goes up, the enrollment goesdown, or the amount that must be given away in student aid goes up. Schools are badbusinesses, whether public or private, not usually because of mismanagement but because of the nature of the enterprise. They lose money on every customer, and they can go bankrupt either from too few students or too many students. Even a very good college is a very bad business. It is such colleges, promising but threatened, that I worry about. Low enrollment is not their chief problem. Even with full enrollment, they may go under. Efforts to save them, and preferably to keep them private, are a national necessity. There is no basis for arguing that private schools are inherently (固有地) better than public schools. There are many examples to the contrary. Anyone can name state universities and colleges that rank as the finest in the nation and the world. It is now inevitable that public institutions will be dominant, and therefore diversity is a national necessity. Diversity in the way we support schools tends to give us a healthy diversity in the forms of education. In an imperfect society such as ours, uniformity of education throughout the nation could be dangerous. In an imperfect society, diversity is a positive good. Supporters of public higher education know the importance of sustaining private higher education.36. According to the author’s opinion schools are bad businesses because of ________.A. mismanagementB. too few studentsC. too many studentsD. the nature of schools37. The author used the phrase “go under” (Sentence 3, Para. 3) to mean ________.A. get into difficultiesB. have low enrollmentC. have low tuitionD. bring in more money38. We can reasonably conclude from this passage that the author made an appeal tothe public in order to support _________.A. public institutionsB. private schoolsC. uniformity of educationD. high quality of education39. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. High-quality private schools deserve to be saved.B. If the tuition is raised, the enrollment goes down.C. There are many cases to show that public schools are better than private schools.D. Private schools have more money than public schools.40. Which of the following ways could possibly save private schools?A. Raising tuition.B. Full enrollment.C. National awareness and support.D. Reduction of rising cost.BIs Your Diet Destroying the Environment?A vegetarian diet is often praised for its health benefits. Studies have shown that vegetarians usually have lower levels of heart disease and a lower risk ofdiabetes than people who eat meat. What most people are less aware of, however, are the effects that a vegetarian diet can have on the environment.Researchers from the Union of Concerned Scientists in the US recently studied how consumer behavior affects the environment. The study showed that meat consumption is one of the main ways that humans can damage the environment, second only to the use of motor vehicle. Then, how can eating meat have a negative effect on the environment? For a start, all farm animals such as cows, pigs, and sheep give off methane(沼气)gas by expelling (排出)wind from their bodies. One cow can produce up to 60 liters of methane each day. Methane gas is the second most common greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide. Many environmental experts now believe that it is more responsible for global warming than carbon dioxide. It is estimated that 25% of all methane released into the atmosphere comes from farm animals.Another way that meat production affects the environment is through the use of water and land. 2,500 gallons of water are needed to produce one pound of beef, whereas 20 gallons of water are needed to produce one pound of wheat. One acre of farmland used for crop production can produce 40,000 pounds of potatoes, 30,000 pounds of carrots, or 50,000 pounds of tomatoes. Many people now see the benefits of switching to a vegetarian diet, not just for health reasons, but also because it plays a vital role in protecting the environment. However, some nutritionists advise against switching to a totally strict vegetarian, or vegan diet. They believe a vegan diet, which excludes all products from animal sources, such as cheese, eggs, and milk, can be short of many necessary vitamins and minerals our bodies need.Today, many people know it’s important to take better care of their bodies and to use the earth’s resources more efficiently. As this understanding spreads, more people may realize that to help the environment and for the human race to survive, more of us will need to become vegetarians.41. The underlined word “it” in Para.3 refers t o ________.A. methane gasB. carbon dioxideC. expelling windD. greenhouse gas42. Many figures are used in Para.4 to show ________.A. growing tomatoes has the highest productionB. crop production is better than meat productionC. meat production consumes too much water and landD. farm animals are the main producer of the methane gas43. What message does the passage want to convey?A. Our diet is destroying the surroundings.B. Raising farm animals affects the environment.C. A vegetarian diet helps to protect the environment.D. More and more people are becoming strict vegetarians.CMrs. Squirrel and I Negotiated TermsI was sitting in the room reading when I heard a loud noise. To defend my home from break-in, I picked up my defense weapon--- a broom and went out. There on the roof of my porch(门廊), I saw a grey fluffy squirrel. I drove her away with the broom, but the next day I heard her again.I searched squirrels on the net and found because their teeth keep growing, they have to constantly chew on things to shorten their teeth. This was disturbing so I asked my husband to call in some wildlife control people. On Monday morning two men showed up, with guns in their hands. I pointed uneasily to the hole in my porch roof. They held up their guns. Suddenly I saw in my mind the baby nursery inside. I stopped them and confirmed that they wouldn’t harm her. They hesitated, but finally put down their guns. Then they brought out a bottle of deodorizer(除臭剂)and sprayed it into the squirrel’s home. They told me she would not like the smell and would leave. There was no sign of Mrs. Squirrel, so they blocked the hole, took my cheque for $250 and left.Shortly after they left, Mrs. Squirrel returned from her shopping trip. She was mad at beingdriven out and began feverishly clawing at the porch roof. In order to stop the destruction of myhome, I drove her away with the broom again. Each day thereafter, Mrs. Squirrel continued her attack on my possession. I then cal led the company to report that “SHE’S BAAAAAACK…” The receptionist said that if Mrs. Squirrel had managed to find another way into my porch roof, it would be a new charge. I replied I couldn’t continue contributing my husband’s hard-earned income to their silly wildlife experts and hang up.I went to the porch and banged on the roof. Mrs. Squirrel came out and glared at me. We negotiated some terms, came to an agreeable arrangement and went back into our respective homes. All is quiet these days, although large quantities of materials have been removed from my garage wall and my daughter claims that some of her doll-house furniture has disappeared. I still hope that Mrs. Squirrel would leave, but I will wait until it is warmer and hopefully until after the birth of the little ones.44. What did the author think of the squirrel at first?A. Troublesome.B. Dangerous.C. Interesting.D. Clever.45. Why didn’t the author ask the wildlife control people to come again?A. She worried about the safety of the squirrel.B. She thought the company charged too much.C. She decided to drive away the squirrel herself.D. She doubted the ability of the wildlife control people.46. What can we learn from the passage?A. Getting rid of the squirrel needs patience.B. The squirrel has destroyed the author’s house.C. The author has developed affection for the squirrel.D. The author signed an agreement with Mrs. Squirrel.47. The author has written the passage in a (an) ________ way.A. persuasiveB. seriousC. informativeD. amusingD"Panopticon" is a place in which everything is in full view of others.A recent New York Times " House and Home" article featured the story of a man who lives in a glass house.Every wall in his home is transparent; he has no walls to hide behind, not even in the bathroom.Of course, he lives in a remote area where he doesn't exactly have neighbors looking in and watching his every move. But he has chosen to live without any physical privacy in a home that allows every action to be seen.He has created his own panopticon of sorts. The term panopticon was coined by Jeremy Bentham in the late eighteenth century when he was describing an idea for how prisons should be designed. The prisoners' cells would be placed in a circle with a guard tower in the middle. All walls facing the center of the circle would be glass. In that way, every prisoner's cell would be in full view of the guards. The prisoners could do nothing unobserved, but the prisoners would not be able to see the guard tower. They would know they were being watched - or rather, they would know that they could be being watched-but because they could not see the observer, they would never know when the guard was actually monitoring their actions.Similarly, it is common that people behave differently when they know they are being watched. We act differently when we know someone is looking; we act differently when we think someone else might be looking. In these situations, we are less likely to be ourselves; instead, we will act the way we think we should act when we are being observed by others. In our wired society, many talk of the panopticon as a metaphor for the future. But in many ways, the panopticon is already here.Monitoring cameras are everywhere, and we often don't even know our actions are being recorded. In addition, we leave a record of everything we do online. And most of us have no idea just how much information about us has been recorded and how much data is available to various sources. We can do little to stop the information gathering and exchange and can only hope to be able to control the damage if something goes wrong.48.According to the passage, a panopticon is .A.a prison cellB.a house that is transparentC.a tower that provides a broad viewD.a place where everything can be seen by others49.From Paragraph 3, we learn that panopticon .A.is not applicable outside the prisonB.is used everywhere in public placesC.is an effective tool to control prisonersD.is an effective tool to share information.50.Why does the author say that panopticon is already here?A.Because our privacy is completely transparent.B.Because we are all prisoners in our own homes.C.Because our actions are observed and recorded in many cases.D.Because we are always afraid that someone might be watching us四、任务型阅读We are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear. Maybe some of our fears arebrought on by your own experiences, by what someone has told you,by what you’ve read in the papers. Some fears are reasonable, like walking alone in a bad part of town at two o’clock in the morning. But once you learn to avoid that situation, you won’t ne ed to live in fear of it.Fears, even the most basic ones, can totally destroy our ambitions. Fear can destroy fortunes.Fear can destroy relationships. Fear, if left uncontrolled, can destroy our lives. Fear is one of the many enemies hidden inside us.Let me tell you about five of the other enemies we face from within. The first enemy thatyou’ve got to destroy before it destroys you is indifference. What a tragic disease this is! “Ho-hum, let it slide. I’ll just drift along.” Here’s one problem with dr ifting: you can’t drift your way to the top of the mountain. The second enemy we face is indecision. Indecision is the thief of opportunity and enterprise. It will steal your chances for a better future. Take a sword to this enemy. The third enemy inside is doubt. Sure, there’s room for healthy skepticism. You can’t believeeverything. But you also can’t let doubt take over. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportu nities. Worst of all, they doubt themselves. I’m telling you, doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success. It will empty both your bank account and your heart. Doubt is an enemy. Go after it. Get rid of it.The fourth enemy within is worry. We’ve all got to worry some. Just don’t let it defeat you. Instead, let it alarm you. Worry can be useful. If you step off the sidewalk in New York City and a taxi is coming, you’ve got to worry. But you can’t let worry loose like a mad dog that drives you i nto a small corner. Here’s what you’ve got to do with your worries: drive them into a small corner. Whatever is out to get you, you’ve got to get it. Whatever is pushing on you, you’ve got to push back. The fifth enemy inside is overcaution. It is the timid (胆怯的) approach to life.Timidity isnot a virtue; it’s an illness. If you let it go, it’ll defeat you. Timid people don’t get promoted. They don’t advance and grow. You’ve got to avoid overcaution.Do battle with the enemies. Do battle with your fears. Build your courage tofight what’sholding you back, what’s keeping you from your goals and dreams. Be courageous in your life and in your pursuit of the things you want and the person you want to become.Title: Facing the (51) ▲ within1-5ABADB 6-10 CACAD 11-15 BADCB16-20 BABDC 21-25DACAB 26-30CADAB 31-35 CADBC36-40 DABDC 41-43 ACC 44-47 ABCD 48-50 DCC51. enemies 52. Graduating them is another matter.Barry Mills, the president of Bowdoin College, was justifiably proud of Bowdoin's efforts to recruit minority students. Since 2003 the small, elite liberal arts school in Brunswick, Maine, has boosted the proportion of so-called under-represented minority students in entering freshman classes from 8% to 13%. "It is our responsibility to reach out and attract students to come to our kinds of places," he told a NEWSWEEK reporter. But Bowdoin has not done quite as well when it comes to actually graduating minorities. While 9 out of 10 white students routinely get their diplomas within six years, only 7 out of 10 black students made it to graduation day in several recent classes."If you look at who enters college, it now looks like America," says Hilary Pennington, director of postsecondary programs for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has closely studied enrollment patterns in higher education. "But if you look at who walks across the stage for a diploma, it's still largely the white, upper-income population."The United States once had the highest graduation rate of any nation. Now it stands 10th. For the first time in American history, there is the risk that the rising generation will be less well educated than the previous one. The graduation rate among 25- to 34-year-olds is no better than the rate for the 55- to 64-year-olds who were going to college more than 30 years ago. Studies show that more and more poor and non-white students want to graduate from college – but their graduation rates fall far short of their dreams. The graduation rates for blacks, Latinos, and Native Americans lag far behind the graduation rates for whites and Asians. As theminority population grows in the United States, low college graduation rates become a threat to national prosperity. The problem is pronounced at public universities. In 2007 the University of Wisconsin-Madison – one of the top five or so prestigious public universities–graduated 81% of its white students within six years, but only 56% of its blacks. At less-selective state schools, the numbers get worse. During the same time frame, the University of Northern Iowa graduated 67% of its white students, but only 39% of its blacks. Community colleges have low graduation rates generally–but rock-bottom rates for minorities. A recent review of California community colleges found that while a third of the Asian students picked up their degrees, only 15% of African-Americans did so as well.Private colleges and universities generally do better, partly because they offer smaller classes and more personal attention. But when it comes to a significant graduation gap, Bowdoin has company. Nearby Colby College logged an 18-point difference between white and black graduates in 2007 and 25 points in 2006. Middlebury College in Vermont, another top school, had a 19-point gap in 2007 and a 22-point gap in 2006. The most selective private schools – Harvard, Yale, and Princeton– show almost no gap between black and white graduation rates. But that may have more to do with their ability to select the best students. According to data gathered by Harvard Law School professor Lani Guinier, the most selective schools are more likely to choose blacks who have at least one immigrant parent from Africa or the Caribbean than black students who are descendants of American slaves."Higher education has been able to duck this issue for years, particularly the more selective schools, by saying the responsibility is on the individual student," says Pennington of the Gates Foundation. "If they fail, it's their fault." Some critics blame affirmative action – students admitted with lower test scores and grades from shaky high schools often struggle at elite schools. But a bigger problem may be that poor high schools often send their students to colleges for which they are "undermatched": they could get into more elite, richer schools, but instead go to community colleges and low-rated state schools that lack the resources to help them. Some schools out for profit cynically increase tuitions and count on student loans and federal aid to foot the bill–knowing full well that the students won't make it. "The school keeps the money, but the kid leaves with loads of debt and no degree and no ability to get a better job. Colleges are not holding up their end," says Amy Wilkins of the Education Trust. There once was a time when universities took pride in their dropout rates. Professors would begin the year by saying, "Look to the right and look to the left. One of you is not going to be here by the end of the year." But such a Darwinian spirit is beginning to give way as at least a few colleges face up to the graduation gap. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the gap has been roughly halved over the last three years. The university has poured resources into peer counseling to help students from inner-city schools adjust to the rigor (严格要求) and faster pace of a university classroom–and also to help minority students overcome thestereotype that they are less qualified. Wisconsin has a "laserlike focus" on building up student skills in the first three months, according to vice provost Damon Williams.1. The government fails to provide the necessary support.D. Affirmative action should be held responsible.2 (原创)Blind from birth, I have never had the opportunity to see myself and have been completely dependent on the image I create in the eye of the observer. There are those who assume that since I can’t see, I obviously also cannot hear. Very often people will converse with me at the top of their lungs, enunciating each word very carefully. Conversely, people will also often whisper, assuming that sincemy eyes don’t work, my ears don’t either. For example, when I go to the airport and ask the ticket agent for assistance to the plane, he or she will invariably pick up the phone, call a ground hostess and whisper, “Hi, Jane, we’ve got a 76 here.”I have concluded that the word “blind” is not used for one of two reasons: Either they fear that if the dread word is spoken, the ticket agent’s retina will immediately detach, or they are reluctant to inform me of my condition of which I may not have been previously aware. On the other hand, others know that of course I can hear, but believe that I can’t talk. Often, therefore, when my wife and I go out to dinner, a waiter or w aitress will ask Kit if “he would like a drink” to which I respond that “indeed he would." This point was graphically(生动形象地) driven home to me while we were in England. I had been given a year’s leave of absence from my Washington law firm to study for a diploma-in-law degree at Oxford University. During the year I became ill and was hospitalized. Immediately after admission, I was wheeled down to the X-ray room. Just at the door sat an elderly woman —elderly I would judge from the sound of her voice. “What is his name?” the woman asked the orderly who had been wheeling me.“What’s your name?” the orderly repeated to me.“Harold Krents,” I replied.“Harold Krents,” he repeated.“When was he born?”“When were you born?”“November 5, 1944,” I responded.“November 5, 1944,” the orderly intoned. This procedure continued for approximately five minutes at which point even my saint-like disposition(性格) deserted me. “Look,” I finally blurted out, "this is absolutely ridiculous. Okay, granted I can’t see, but it’s got to have become pretty clear to both of you that I don’t need an interpreter.”“He says he doesn’t need an interpreter,” the orderly reported to the woman. The toughest misconception of all is the view that because I can’t see, I can’t work. I was turned down by over forty law firms because of my blindness, even though my qualifications included a cum laude(以优等成绩毕业) degree from Harvard College and a good ranking in my Harvard Law School class. The attempt to find employment, the continuous frustration of being told that it was impossible for a blind person to practice law, the rejection letters, not based on my lack of ability but rather on my disability, will always remain one of the most disillusioning(幻想破灭的) experiences of my life.Fortunately, this view of limitation and exclusion is beginning to change. On April 16, 1976, the Department of Labor issued regulations that mandate equal-employment opportunities for the handicapped. By and large, the business commu nity’s response to offering employment to the disabled has been enthusiastic.I therefore look forward to the day, with the expectation that it is certain to come, when employers will view their handicapped workers as a little child didme years ago when my family still lived in Scarsdale. I was playing basketball with my father in our backyard according to procedures we had developed. My father would stand beneath the hoop, shout, and I would shoot over his head at the basket attached to the garage. Our next-door neighbor, aged five, wandered over into our yard with a playmate. “He’s blind,” our neighbor whispered to her friend in a voice that could be heard distinctly by Dad and me. Dad shot and missed; I did the same. Dad hit the rim: I missed entirel y; Dad shot and missed the garage entirely. “Which one is blind?” whispered back the little friend.I would hope that in the near future when a plant manager is touring the factory with the foreman and comes upon a handicapped and non-handicapped person working together, his comment after watching them work will be, “Which one is disabled?”1. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?A. It is generally assumed that people who cannot see cannot hear.B. The way many people behave in the presence of the blind can be described as“silly”.C. Some people think it is impolite to use the word “blind” in the presenceof blind people.D. Airline personnel use the number “76” to refer to blind people.2. In Paragraph 3, rather than telling what happened in his own words, the author usesa dialogue. He does this for all the following reasons EXCEPT ______.A. to impress readers with his ability to recall the exact words in a conversationB. to help readers experience the situationC. to illustrate exactly how ridiculous the people wereD. to dramatize the frustration he felt3. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A. the author feels that he is greatly admired by the people who meet himB. the author feels that he can make his point more effectively with humor thanwith a serious lectureC. the author got good grades at Harvard Law School because he was given specialprivileges reserved for blind studentsD. Department of Labor regulations were enacted because the author complainedpublicly about the discrimination he experienced while looking for a job4. What is the central theme of the passage?A. The author leads a very fulfilling life as a lawyer despite his disability.B. Blind people often have difficulty finding jobs because employers prefer tohire sighted people.C. Handicapped people need to organize and campaign for better laws to protectthem.D. People often assume that because blind people cannot see, they cannot hear, learn or work.3Most of us are taught to pay attention to what is said—the words. Words do provide us with some information, but meanings are derived from so many other sources that it would hinder our effectiveness as a partner to a relationship to rely too heavily on words alone. Words are used to describe only a small part of the many ideas we associate with any given message. Sometimes we can gain insight into some of those associations if we listen for more than words. We don't always say what we mean or mean what we say. Sometimes our words don't mean anything except " I'm letting off some steam. I don't really want you to pay close attention to what I'm saying. Just pay attention to what I'm feeling." Mostly we mean several things at once. A person wanting to purchase a house says to the current owner, "This step has to be fixed before I'll buy." The owner says, " It's been like that for years." Actually, the step hasn't been like that for years, but the unspoken message is: " I don't want to fix it. We put up with it. Why can't you?" The search for a more expansive view of meaning can be developed of examining a message in terms of who said it, when it occurred, the related conditions or situation, and how it was said. When a message occurs can also reveal associated meaning. Let us assume two couples do exactly the same amount of kissing and arguing. But one couple always kisses after an argument and the other couple always argues after a kiss. The ordering of the behaviors may mean a great deal more than the frequency of the behavior. A friend's unusually docile behavior may only be understood by noting that it was preceded by situations that required an abnormal amount of assertiveness. Some responses may be directly linked to a developing pattern of responses and defy logic. For example, a person who says "No!" to a serials of charges like "You're dumb," "You're lazy," and "You're dishonest," may also say "No!" and try to justify his or her response if the next statement is "And you're good looking."We would do well to listen for how messages are presented. The words, "If sure has been nice to have you over," can be said with emphasis and excitement or ritualistically. The phrase can be said once or repeated several times. And the meanings we associate with the phrase will change accordingly. Sometimes if we say something infrequently it assumes more importance; sometimes the more we say something the less importance it assumes.1. Effective communication is considered possible between two conversing partners, if _____.A. they use proper words to carry their ideas.B. they both speak truly of their own feelings.C. they try to understand each other's ideas beyond words.D. they are capable of associating meaning with their words.2. "I'm letting off some steam" in paragraph 1 means_____.A. I'm just calling your attention.B. I'm just kidding.C. I'm just saying the opposite.D. I'm just giving off some sound.3. The house-owner's example shows that he actually means_____.A. the step has been like that for years.B. he doesn't think it necessary to fix the step.C. the condition of the step is only a minor fault.D. the cost involved in the fixing should be shared.4. Some responses and behaviors may appear very illogical, but are justifiable if_____.A. linked to an abnormal amount of assertiveness.B. seen as one's habitual pattern of behavior.C. taken as part of an ordering sequence.D. expressed to a series of charges.5. The word "ritualistically" in the last paragraph equals something done___.A. without true intention.B. light-heartedly.C. in a way of ceremony.D. with less emphasis.三、任务型阅读请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填上一个最恰当的词。
