Unit 4 Career PlanningIntroductory RemarksToday’s job market is more competitive than ever before. So you should begin to think about your future career before you graduate from college and even make your career plan. A considered and detailed plan can give a picture of the way leading to a satisfying and productive career. The first step is a good résumé (or curriculum vitae, CV for short). It should be clear and concise, with the most important items on the first page. It should include your name, address, phone, and your fax, email, mobile phone if you have them. The key items in a résuméinclude your job objective, your education, your work experience, your honors, awards, your affiliations and any offices held, and anything else you think will help you get the job.The second step is a good cover letter. This should be no more than a page. Like the résumé, the cover letter should go through several careful drafts, with advice from an instructor or some other experienced people. Other documents such as personal statements and application forms may be required. These should be prepared just as thoroughly and conscientiously as the letter and the résumé.Now you are almost ready for the bottom line of the job-hunting process: the interview. You should practice this part several times, including your entry, greetings, etc. Bring several copies of your résuméto the interview in case the committee members don't have them, and be prepared to hand these out at the beginning. It's also good to practice the entire interview. Answers should be clear and concise, including relevant specific examples of your education or experience. It’s good to practice the entire interview, and especially practice some questions (See NCE Teacher’s Book p.61) before the interview.Part One PreparationName different occupationsDirections: You will have 3 minutes to list as many names of occupations as possible. Describe a careerDirections: You will be asked to describe a career you’re likely to pursue in the future. Don’t men tion its name but ask your classmates to guess what it is.What kind of job is suitable for you?Listen to 14 statements carefully and decide which category of jobs they belong to. Questions for discussion1.What do you think is the most ideal occupation?2.How are you preparing for your future career?3.What are the steps to get a world-class job?Proverbs and SayingsMany hands make light work.人多好办事。
Unit4 Career PlanningUseful InformationFinding a job is like any other competitive activity. You would not play a game of basketball without practicing and warming up for the game. You would practice your shots, your dribbling, your passing, and even your free throws for a long time before the game. Then on the day of the game you would practice them again. Every time you practice, you’d hope to improve. The job market is more competitive than that. So, you should practice harder, and have a good plan. In basketball you can fall behind in the first quarter and still win, but that’s unlikely in the competition for jobs, where unpreparedness is rarely rewarded. The first step is a good résumé(or curriculum vitae, CV for short). It should be clear and concise, with the most important items on the first page. It should include your name, address, phone number, your fax, email, etc. It would be unfortunate if someone wanted to interview or hire you but did not know how to find you. The key items in a résuméinclude your job objective, your education, your work experience, your honors and awards, your affiliations and any offices held, and anything else you think will help you get the job. Some candidates include hobbies, interests, personal information, references, etc. Others do not. Such items come at the end of the résumé, with references as the last. The second step is a good cover letter. This should be no more than one page. Like the résumé, the cover letter should go through several careful drafts, with advice from an instructor or some other experienced people. Different copies should be written for different jobs you apply for in order to match the jobs better. You can provide more information about yourself in a cover letter than you could in the résumé. This helps attract the attention of the recruiter. Other documents such as personal statements and application forms may be required. These should be prepared just as thoroughly and conscientiously as the letter and the résumé.Now you are almost ready for the most important step of the job-hunting process: the interview. This normally includes a phone interview, on-site interview, second interview, and final follow-up interview. The job may be gained or lost in the first 30 seconds of the interview. You should practice this part several times. Bring several copies of your résuméto the interview in case the committee members don’t have them, and be prepared to hand them out at the beginning. It’s also good to practice the entire interview. Answers should be clear and concise, including specific examples of your education or experience. One good example can be worth several minutes of general discussion. Here are some good questions to practice answering before the interview. •Can you tell us something about yourself?•What are your career goals?•Why do you want this job?•What do you hope to be doing five years from now?•What are your greatest achievements?•What are your strengths and weaknesses?•How are your English and computer skills?•Can you work with people of either gender?•Can you work with people from other countries or cultures?•What would you do if…?•Why should we hire you instead of other applicants?•Do you have any questions for us?PART 1Preparation1 Jobs and StereotypesSampleSTEP ONEaccountant, actor, actress, administrator, advisor, astronaut, athlete, auto-repairman, barber, bartender, body guard, butcher, butler, car dealer, carpenter, clerk, conductor, counselor, chef, civil servant, computer programmer, cook, dancer, designer, doctor, driver, engineer, singer, film director, farmer, flight attendant, hairdresser, interpreter, journalist, lawyer, librarian, lifesaver, manager, nurse, operator, physician, pilot, plumber, policeman, real estate agent, receptionist, reporter, salesperson, secretary, security guard, soldier, spokesperson, surgeon, taxi driver, teacher, tourist guide, waiter, waitress, worker, writer, etc.STEP TWO and STEP THREEStudent A: I’ll talk about one type of teacher who is very playful and a bit irresponsible. These teachers are usually primary school teachers. They will say “Hey, kids! Let’s have class outside today!”“Let’s watch a cartoon today!” Or “Let’s just sit and get totally offtopic and talk about last night’s game! We can just have a free day today because you guys have been so good!” This kind of teacher is fun, but you may find you are not doing well with your schoolwork.Student B: My impression of teachers is like this: wearing a pair of glasses and grey hair. They never seem happy or satisfied with us. Anything you are proud of will just be so-so in their eyes. When you go to their office, they will look at you from above their glasses suspiciously. They never ask you to sit down because they have never thought about it. Before you can stand still and take a breath, they start talking about your mistakes in the homework, pointing to your exercise book and asking you angrily why you are still making the same mistakes.Student C: This type of teacher is very scary or stern, like a police officer. Whatever you say, he will say no. For example, when you want to go to restroom, he will say “No!”“Can I turn in my homework tomorrow because I was ill?”“No!” This kind of teacher has no mercy for you, and no excuse is ever good enough. He doesn’t have to yell. His one icy stare can frighten you into submission.2 Word Family1 job2 business3 trade4 labor5 profession6 work7 occupation8 career9 taskSection A 1 job 2 career 3 profession 4 tradeSection B 1 pay 2 fee 3 salary, wages 4 incomeSection C 1 job-seeker 2 employer 3 fire 4 interviewPART 2 Reading-Centered ActivitiesIn-Class ReadingPre-ReadingSample1 It’s a job which requires many skills in dealing with people. For example, they should have a very good attitude toward people and provide good service for those who come to their office. Their main task involves doing paperwork in the office, answering phone calls and helping people go through formalities. They have a steady salary, and lead a comparatively leisurely life. They go to work at 8:30 in the morning, and get back home at 5 in the afternoon. They are not fired easily because they are employed by the government. Not many people would like to take the job before, but now it’s very popular. People even have to take and pass tests to get employed, and the competition is tough. The government keeps raising the salary of these people partly in an attempt to keep them from corruption.(Answer: government office worker, or civil servant)2 First of all, I am working very hard on my required courses, especially English. In the English class, I am very active in group discussions. I know what really counts is my ability to use English. I am also involved in some social work in the university in order to get myself prepared for serving society, so that I can form a good relationship with my colleagues and business partners in my future work. Warm-heartedness is also a very important attribute for my future career. I participated in some money-raising activities to help those victims of floods and earthquakes. If possible, I would also learn to drive. Having a driver’s license will enable me to have a better chance in the job market. Well, it seems that I have a lot to do to get ready for the future. ExercisesPost-ReadingReading Comprehension1 1 Introduction (Para. 1):Career planning does not necessarily follow routine or logical steps.2 Students’ weaknesses in career planning (Para. 2):i) Most students choose from a very narrow group of occupations.ii) 40 to 60 percent of the students choose professional occupations, but only 15 to 18 percentof the work force is engaged in professional work.iii) Young men lack interest in fields that offer many job opportunities.iv) A third of the students are unable to express any choice of occupation.3 Serious flaws in the ways of decision-making (Paras. 3-5)i) Complacency—ignoring challenging information.ii) Defensive avoidance—resorting to wishful thinking or daydreaming.iii) Hypervigilance—searching frantically for career possibilities and seizing on hastily derived solutions.4 Keys to career planning (Paras. 6-11)i) Study yourself.ii) Write your career goals down.iii) Review your plans and your progress periodically with another person.iv) If you choose a career that does not fit you, you can start over.5 Changes in careers (Paras. 12-13)i) Few changes involve downward movement; most involve getting ahead.ii) Job changes and career shifts occur at all ages.6 Conclusion (Paras. 14-15)Although there is no sure way to make career plans work out, there are things that you can do now to shape your career possibilities.2 1 T 2 T3 F4 T5 F6 T7 T8 T9 T 10 F3Sample•I agree with the panel’s decision. First, the applicant is very confident in answering the questions and he knows what he is supposed to do. Second, he is quick-minded and physically strong. Third, he is interested in the job and is ready to dedicate himself to the job. Finally, he has previous experience in working as a store detective.•I don’t agree with the panel’s decision. I think the panel puts too much emphasis on the appearance of the applicants. I think Applicant B is much more suited for the job. He has a warmer personality. He can be a good store detective as well as a good staff member, because I don’t think the sole responsibility for a detective is to check on the shoppers. He should also help the customers when possible.•Generally speaking, I think the panel has made a wise decision and chosen the right applicant for the job. Yet I think the applicant could have done better by not being so conceited and boastful about his ability. After all, people cannot trust too much what a person says about himself without further investigation. What’s more, team spirit is very important. If he is not easy-going and feels too good about himself, it will be difficult for others to cooperate with him. I also doubt whether he will listen to the boss.Vocabulary1 1 periodically2 efficiency3 insight4 instability5 clerical6 evaluation7 foreseeable8 challenging9 integrate 10 formula2 1 in case 2 Every so often3 resort to4 talk over5 start over6 in reality7 at stake8 seized on9 leading to 10 take stock of3 1 country 2 way 3 technical4 both5 provided6 who7 such8 needed9 opportunities 10 when11 to 12 Completion 13 holding 14 early 15 hire16 promote 17 up 18 educatingTranslation1 I used to enjoy / like photography, but I now have no time to pursue any hobbies.2 There is no sure way to tell / predict who will develop asthma and who won’t.3 Today neurobiologists no longer argue about whether or not the brain can grow new cells.4 “I don’t love acting as much as I once did”, said Angelina Jolie.5 If you don’t define your goal, you don’t know in which direction you should be heading.6 While you should not dwell on your past, taking the time to review and reflect on the path you have taken / spending some time reviewing and thinking about the path you have taken will help you plan for the future.7 You may love someone but not necessarily have to marry him.8 These examples demonstrate how poorly some students write their résumés.PART 3 Further Development1 Vocabulary Review1 A2 B3 C4 C5 C6 A7 C8 B9 B 10 C2 Which Career Is the Right One for You?SampleSTEP ONEI chose Nature.STEP TWOScientific: scientist, professor, geneticist, technician, architect, researcher, engineerSocial: nurse, lawyer, doctor, dentist, policeman, taxi driver, bus driver, teacherGeneral service: waiter, librarian, porter, bus driver, counselor, civil servant,Artistic: graphic designer, painter, writer, poet, photographer, film directorComputational: accountant, statistician, stock broker, cashier, mathematicianPractical: tiler, mechanic, carpenter, plumber, tailor, cook, knitterNature: gardener, vet, farmer, fisherman, animal keeper, landscaperOutdoor/Active: postman, construction worker, guide, sailor, policeman, athleteSTEP THREEI’d like to be a gardener. Maybe it sounds strange to you, but that idea appeals to me. To be a gardener, I can have a chance to know more about plants, because I am always interested in all sorts of plants. I enjoy taking pictures of beautiful flowers and plants. By working outside, I can breathe fresh air, smell the pleasant scent of flowers, and look at the beautiful blue sky. How intoxicating! That’s my ideal life! It’s also a simple life. I hate to deal with complicated interpersonal relationships as one does while working in offices and companies. What I am required to do is only to take care of the plants which I love. Besides, gardening can be a hobby to share with family members and friends, a stress reliever or an escape from the day-to-day grind.3 Looking for a Job1 G2 D3 B4 H5 INotes:1 In Ad A, “light typing” means they wouldn’t have to type very much.2 In Ad C, “power lighting design” means the design of lights for a room, building, or street.3 In Ad D, “detail-oriented” means careful and meticulous.4 In Ad F, “financial statements” means report of the finances of a certain company (财务报告).5 In Ad G, “legal trainee” means someone who is receiving, or has received training concerning legal matters.4 What Matters Most?SampleSTEP ONE and STEP TWO(The following factors have been listed according to their importance):•a high salary;•lots of perks (工资以外的实物或好处), e.g. a company car, reimbursing travel expenses, vacation;•an opportunity to serve others in the community / in society;•good promotion prospects;•a pleasant, friendly working atmosphere;•short working hours—not more than 35 hours a week;•a good boss;•pleasant colleagues;•career orientation;•suitable for one’s natural / professional talents / skills;•interesting tasks;•a good safety record;•a clean environment;•a restaurant in the building;•good location (near bus stop, highway, metro, etc.);•opportunities for travel, especially going abroad•opportunities for professional development / job training;•daycare facilities;•school nearby.STEP THREEI will explain why I list “a high salary, perks and serving the society” as the three most important factors contributing to my job satisfaction. Though we do not work to live, we need money to live. After we graduate, we have to repay our parents’ support for our education, to make their lives better. Also, we have to buy or rent our own apartments. Very soon, perhaps we will have a child. How can we support the family? Only by working hard and earning a good salary. But of course, money is not my only pursuit. Career satisfaction also involves serving the society. I can derive a lot of pleasure from the fact that I can use my knowledge and ability to make contributions to the society. So it’s really a win-win situation in my opinion.5 Are Summer Jobs Necessary?Sample1 I think the following jobs are not practical in China: 1) baby-sitting, and 2) opening a lemonade stand. The following jobs are practical: 3) working in the library or in the cafeteria, 4) tutoring, 5) being a waiter or waitress and 6) being a teaching assistant. The main reason why being a baby-sitter is not practical in China is that China has adopted family planning policy. Very often the only child is the so-called “prince” or “princess” in the family. On the one hand, parents and grandparents dote on the only child so much that they don’t feel at ease to allow a young student to do such a summer job. On the other hand, students know nothing about baby-sitting and cannot be expected to be able to take good care of other people’s kids. What’s more, our parents believe students’ major responsibility at school is to study. They don’t think we should spend our precious time baby-sitting instead of studying. These are the reasons why I think it is not practical for college students to be baby-sitters in China.I think being a tutor is not only practical but also a very good job. Many college students use their summer time or weekends to tutor middle-school students. They teach them either English or math, two very important subjects. The reasons why college students can be tutors are as follows: First, they like to be tutors because they enjoy teaching what they excel at while receiving pay. Also, their parents think it is a good job. And, high school students like to be tutored by collegestudents because they have more in common in terms of hobbies and interests. Parents also like college students to tutor their kids because they are good examples for their children. That’s why many college students like to be tutors.2 Advantages:•enable one to earn some money to pay for college expenses and part of their tuition fees; •help one to gain some work experience;•help one to compare different jobs and form a clear idea about their future career;•help one to learn about the outside world;•help to apply and practice what they learn at university;•help one to gain additional training;•help one to make contacts, meet new people;•help one to learn to work with other people;•help one to serve the community or help others.Disadvantages:•distract one’s attention from studies;•make one become too practical;•make one become money-oriented;•spoil one’s vacation, which could be spent on relaxation, traveling, etc.;•cause one to spend more time away from one’s family;•tiring, unhealthy work conditions;•prevent one from taking summer courses.6 Funny Job InterviewsSampleSTEP ONEA Interviewer: Do you have a boyfriend?Applicant: Yes.Interviewer: Is he here, in this city?Applicant: No, he is in another city.Interviewer: Sorry, we will not employ you.Applicant: Why not?Interviewer: You would not be keeping your mind on your work. What’s more, we do not wantto see our telephone bill increase enormously because of you.B Interviewer: Do you have a girlfriend?Applicant: No.Interviewer: Have you ever dated a girl?Applicant: Yes, but failed.Interviewer: Do you want to date girls after you have a job?Applicant: I will set my mind on work first. I will not consider my marriage now.Interviewer: Sorry, we will not employ you.Applicant: Why not?Interviewer: You are lacking in the ability of dealing with interpersonal relationships. Also, you lack self-confidence.C Interviewer: Do you have a girlfriend?Applicant: Yes.Interviewer: Is she pretty?Applicant: Not quite.Interviewer: Sorry, we will not employ you.Applicant: Can it be that a plain girlfriend will affect your company’s image?Interviewer: It’s not that. But our company engages in works of art. Your aesthetic judgment does not satisfy our company’s need.D Interviewer: Do you have a girlfriend?Applicant: Yes.Interviewer: Is she pretty?Applicant: Very.Interviewer: Is she your first love?Applicant: Yes.Interviewer: Sorry, we will not employ you, because you lack the initiative in unceasingly pursuing the better.E Interviewer: Do you have a girlfriend?Applicant: Yes.Interviewer: Is she your first love?Applicant: No, I had a couple of girlfriends before.Interviewer: Sorry, we will not employ you, because you would soon job-hop.F Interviewer: Do you have a boyfriend?Applicant: Yes.Interviewer: Is he very rich?Applicant: No.Interviewer: Sorry, we will not employ you, because your job is to work with money. I’m afraid you cannot resist the temptation.G Interviewer: Do you have a boyfriend?Applicant: Yes.Interviewer: Is he very rich?Applicant: Yes, he has his own company.Interviewer: Sorry, we will not employ you, because even your boyfriend’s company doesn’t employ you.Applicant: But that’s because his company doesn’t have a position suitable for me. Interviewer: What’s your major then?Applicant: Secretary.Interviewer: Sorry, we still cannot employ you. Pretty girls will affect our manager’s work. Applicant: But I am not pretty.Interviewer: That’s even worse. If you are not pretty, our manager will not be interested in you. STEP TWO1 These interviews are rather funny. Obviously the interviewers’points of view are often contradictory. It seems that any response from the job applicant is unacceptable. In other words, nobody would be able to get the job they are interviewed for. There can be only one result from the interview, that is, the job will not be offered to anyone, or the job has already been reserved for someone they know very well. Generally speaking, it’s not possible in reality to have these kinds of interviews. But I like them very much. The interviewer is very clever in refusing anyresponse from the applicant.I can’t say that all the interviews would exist in any particular company when they hire new workers or staff. The viewpoints contradict one another. If we look at each of the interviews individually, we should say they could exist in reality. And, the conversation seems logically conducted, and the reason for refusing to give a job offer is a good one, though in reality the refusal probably wouldn’t be done so straight forward, and the interviewers would be friendlier. Besides, the interviewer’s questions wouldn’t focus just on girlfriend and boyfriend relationships. This makes the interviews sound a little ridiculous. These interviews also show us that a refusal can always be made whatever good qualities and skills the applicant has.2 •The job interview is an important part of recruiting new employees for companies or institutions. At an interview the applicant can be observed in person and may be askedquestions so that the organization can find the best candidates for the target job. By the same token job interviews are equally important for job applicants to find the job they really want or like. When people apply for jobs very often they choose to apply for several jobs at the same time to see which of them are most desirable. For strong applicants they may be offered more than one job, and they may accept the one they prefer. At the interview the applicant can also ask for information which they couldn’t get otherwise, or they can learn more about the job.For a job applicant to get a job, the most important thing to do is to show to the employer their qualifications for the job or position, their education background, experience and knowledge necessary for the job, and their skills which the job demands. The applicant who can meet the most of the requirements will probably get the job. So, for applicants they need to know the job very well, what is essential to the job, and anything else that is important to the job. •Experienced job interviewers know how they can recognize the best candidate(s) for the job. They know what and how to ask and how they can see the real picture of an applicant. They know how they can find out what they couldn’t by just reading their resume, or anyother written materials. When they find the best candidate, they know how to keep themfor the job. As for job applicants, they should know what’s most important for the job and should naturally do their best to influence the interviewers in order to get the job. At thesame time they should learn from the interviewer their possible career development if theyare given the job.In addition to educational background, work experience, knowledge and skills, the applicant’s personality is also very important for any particular job. For example, are you devoted to or responsible for your work? Is it easy for you to get along with others? How well can you cooperate with your colleagues? Are you willing to support others so that you finish the work together? Can you share your ideas with others, or listen to others when they have good ideas? Are you optimistic or pessimistic about problems that arise in your work? In short, your personality will also contribute to getting good job offers.PART 4 Translation and Writing2 Translation Practice1 刚才总统对我所说的热情友好的话使我深受感动。
