2016.11Reading Comprehension Directions: There are three passages inthis part. Each passage is followed by some ques-tions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D.If the Dakota Access Pipeline(输油管道) is completed, it will carry nearly half a million bar-rels of oil across four states every day. Energy Transfer Partners (ETP), a Texas-based company behind the $ 3.8 billion project, hopes to finish construction this year. But the Standing Rock Sioux, an American Indian tribe( 部落), is determined to stop the 1,172-mile pipeline from being built. (76)Both sides show no signs of backing down. The Dakota Access Pipeline was announced in 2014. A section of it will run near the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. A reservation is an area of land set aside for American Indians. The tribe says the construction threatens to destroy historical areas and ancient burial sites. They also say the pipeline could pollute their main water source, the Missouri River. In April, the Standing Rock Sioux began a protest against the project. They camped at the construction site. Since then, thou-sands of people, including people from American Indian tribes, have traveled to the site to join the protest.ETP says that the pipeline will have built-in safety measures to protect against oil leaks. Work-ers will also monitor it remotely, and will be able to close valves (阀) within three minutes if leaks are detected.American Indians have been staging a nonviolent protest for months. The protest took a turn last week when police were called to keep the peace between protesters and armed security guards hired by the company.(77) Twenty-eight people have been arrested since then and charged with interfering with the pipeline construction.第1题Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?A.The Dakota Access Pipeline will create more markets for oil and gas.B.The Dakota Access Pipeline will create many job opportunities.C.American Indians oppose the construction of an oil pipeline.D.American Indians fight for equal voting rights. ETP hopes to finish this project in__________.A.2016B.2017C.2018D.2019答案:A第3题Why do American Indians protest against the construction of this pipeline?A.Because it will cost up to $ 3.8 billion.B.Because it threatens the region' s water supply.C.Because it will make many people lose their jobs.D.Because it will force many people to leave their homes. According to the passage, the workers can__________ in case of pipeline leaks.A.report it to the local governmentB.ask people to leave the leak affected areasC.call 911D.close valves答案:D第5题According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?A.This pipeline will cross four states.B.This pipeline is 1,179. miles long.C.All the protesters are from the Standing Rock Sioux.D.Neither side of the dispute is willing to compromise.答案:CAs the National Park Service celebrates its 100th anniversary(周年纪念), President Barack Obama has announced the establishment ofone new national monument, and the expansion(扩大)of another. In Maine, more than 87,500 acres of forest will become government-protected parkland for the first time. In Hawaii, a national monument created by President George W. Bush in 2006 will expand to about582,578 square miles, four times its current size.Obama has now created or enlarged 26 national monuments duringhis presidency. As a result, his administration says, Obama has protected more of the nation' s land than any other president has.But some residents and officials, in both Maine and Hawaii, object to the plans. (78)They say their local economies depend on the use of these areas. In establishing this monument, Obama took the side of conservationists ( 自然资源保护者)who want laws to protect wild lands. Creating a national park usually requires the approval of Con-gress. But a 1906 federal law allows the president to establish national monuments on his own.The land' s new status as a monument means that mining anddrilling operations are forbidden there. (79)It may also severelylimit activities such as logging, road-building, and hunting. Some of Maine' s politicians who want to protect the state' s logging industries say Obama should not have acted alone. They say Washington should not tell the states how to use their land, especially when people' s jobs are at stake. Maine politician Susan Collins said the president should have listened to Maine lawmakers and residents, as well as to the U. S. Congress before making his decision. However, those who support the president' s decision say the establishment of the new monu-ment will lead to new jobs through tourism.第6题Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A.Creating New JobsB.Protecting Wild AnimalsC.Stimulating Local EconomiesD.Creating New National Monuments答案:D第7题Obama has established or enlarged __________ national monuments during his two terms.A.19B.20C.26D.30答案:C第8题In national monuments, __________ is forbidden.A.loggingB.huntingC.miningD.road-building答案:C第9题The phrase at stake in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to__________.A.in returnB.in dangerC.at presentD.by chance答案:B第10题According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?A.The national monument in Hawaii was created by President Bush.B.There is no objection to President Obama' s decision.C.President Obama made this decision on his own.D.The establishment of the new monument will lead to new jobs.答案:BToronto' s third City Hall, now known as Old City Hall, was designed by Edward James Len-nox and declared open on Sept.18,1899.Created to provide more space for city officials, it turned outto be the largest building in the city and the largest city buildingin North America at the time.Lennox took three years to design the City Hall and it took 11 years to build it. It was saved by a group of people called the "Friends of Old City Hall. "The clock tower stands parallel with the middle of Bay Street, rather than with the center of the building. As they grow older, the turtles move to 73 waters along the coast, where they find sea grass to eat.Adult green sea turtles face many threats, primarily form humans, including injuries from passing boats, being 74 in fishing nets and pollution. One hundred and thirty-one year later, (76) the bottle was found on an Australia island. It’s believed to be the oldest-known message in a bottle, in terms if the amount of time that has passed between when it was written and when it was found. Before this discovery, Guinness(吉尼斯) world Records said that the oldest was 108 years old, found in Germany in 2015. Australian and German researchers worked together to check whether the note is real or not.Tonya Illman was walking on the beach in January when she spotted the old bottle. “I picked it up thinking it might look nice on display in my home,” Illman says, according to an account on her husband’s website.(77) The bottle was partially filled with wet sand. Shortly after, Illman’s son’s girlfriend poured out the contents and found a tightly rolled note covered in a piece of string.Too damp to open initially, according to the account, the group waited for it to dry and were amazed to see that it was carefully handwritten in German. “The first thing that caught my eye was the year 1866,” said Illman’s husband Kym. “It seemed totally unlikely to us that the note and bottle could have lasted that long.”The pair reached out to the Western Australia Museum, which set out to study the document. “Extraordinary finds need extraordinary evidence to support them, so we contacted colleagues in German for help to find more information,” Ross Anderson, who is in charge of works of art in the museum, said in a statement. But this message is no SOS or love letter.1. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Flores Colque celebrated her 118th birthday last month. Her national paper says Flores Colque was born on October 26, 1900 in the mountains of Bolivia.During her long life, Flores Colque has seen two world wars. Her home country of Bolivia had a major revolution. And the town where she is from has grown from 3,000 people to 175,000. But right now, Flores Colque seems mostly interested in her dogs and cats. She has not heard of the Guinness Book of World Records, and she does not care whether experts confirm she is the oldest person alive.“She’s always been active, easygoing and fun,”says her grandniece, who lives with her in a simple home with a dirt floor. Government officials have paid for some improvements to the house, adding a brick path and railings (栏杆) so Flores Colque can walk safely. The mayor’s office calls Flores Colque part of the country’s living history. On the day a reporter visited, Flores Colque was playing a small guitar and singing old songs in her native language. "If you would have told me y ou were coming, I’d have remembered all the songs," she joked. When she was growing up, Flores Colque herded sheep in the Bolivian highlands. Schoolwork suffers. The video-game world seems a friendlier place than the real one.Mental health experts have taken notice. In June, the World Health Organization (WHO) added gaming disorder to its list of diseases and health conditions. A person may have the disorder if gaming has damaged his or her relationships with family and friends, and if it has affected his or her daily activities. Not all experts agree that excessive gaming should be called a disorder. They say people hooked on video games may be suffering from other mental health problems that should be treated first.Others think WHO made the right call. Psychiatrist (精神科医生) Clifford Sussman treats gaming addiction (上瘾).(78) He says kids often have feelings of anxiety and loneliness. They get angry when a parent asks them to stop playing video games. What makes video games addictive? Playing excites the brain's reward center. After a while, the brain becomes numb (麻木的) to pleasure. You feel bored without a controller in your hand. So you play even more. One key to healthy gaming is to track how long you play. Sussman recommends taking at least an hour-long break after every hour of play. That gives the brain time to recover.Young gamers who think they might have a problem should seek help from an adult. You should decide 0,7 the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:As the National Park Service celebrates its 100th anniversary 〔周年纪念〕, President Barack Obama has announced the establishment of one new national monument, and the expansion (扩大) of another. In Maine, more than 87,500 acres of forest will become government-protected parkland for the first time. In Hawaii, a national monument created by President George W. Bush in 2006 will expand to about 582,578 square miles, four times its current size.Obama has now created or enlarged 26 national monuments during his presidency. As a result, his administration says, Obama has protected more of the nation's land than any other president has. But some residents and officials, in both Maine and Hawaii, object to the plans. (76) They say their local economies depend on the use of these areas. In establishing this monument, Obama took the side of conservationists (自然资源保护者) who want laws to protect wild lands. Creating a national park usually 1/ 48requires the approval of Congress. But a 1906 federal law allows the president to establish national monuments on his own.The land's new status as a monument means that mining and drilling operations are forbidden there. (77) It may also severely limit activities such as logging, road-building, and hunting. Some of Maine's politicians who want to protect the state's logging industries say Obama should not have acted alone. They say Washington should not tell the states how to use their land, especially when people's jobs are at stake. Maine politician Susan Collins said the president should have listened to Maine lawmakers and residents, as well as to the U.S. Congress, before making his decision. However, those who support the president's decision say the establishment of the new monument will lead to new jobs through tourism.1. Part I (30%)Passage 1In 2014, older Americans fell 29 million times, leading to 7 million injuries, according to a report published last week. About 2.8 million cases were treated in emergency department, and approximately 800,000 seniors went on to be hospitalized. More than 27,000 falls led to death. (76) And the problem is getting more and more serious.“Older adult falls are increasing and, sadly, often indicate the end of independence,” said Dr. Tom Frieden. The falls are preventable, Frieden stressed. He said individuals, families and health care providers can take steps to resist the trend.Dr. Wolf-Klein is a medical professor in New York. She said one concern is that seniors who have experienced a fall alone at home don’t tell anyone. When that happens, prevention efforts don’t begin and they’re at risk for additional falls that lead to broken bones and brain injuries.“Elderly patients tend not to report falls to their families, or even doctors. A fall is a very frightening thing that you keep quiet about. They think if they mention it, they are afraid that they will move to a nursing home or need assistants to help out in the house,” said Wolf-Klein.It’s also a status issue and may make someone feel that they’re weaker than they really are, she explained. When someone does fall and hurt themselves, they’re often never the same, Wolf-Klein said. “You can develop chronic(慢性的)problems. After a fall, a percentage of the population will never return to walking around. People u sed to taking the subway, now they’re in a wheelchair, or they may need help going to the bathroom. They become frailer and lose independence,” she said.1.Which of the following is TRUE?A.In 2014, older adult falls caused 7 million injuries.B.In 2016, Americans fell 29 million times.st year, 2.8 million Americans had emergency treatment.st month, more than 27,000 older Americans were hospitalized.2.From the passage we learn that older adult falls ___.A.Are decreasingB.Can’t be avoidedC.Must be treated in hospitalsually imply the end of independence3.The word frailer in Paragraph 5 probably means ___.A.LonelierB. weakerC. smarterD. better4.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A. But Sheridan Community Schools is the first school district in Indiana to be completely solar-powered. The district finished installing solar panels(太阳能板) for all three of its schools in 2016. Some of the panels can turn to fallow the sun across the sky.Sheridan’s solar push is part of a trend. In 2008, fewer th an 1,000 schools used solar power. By 2014, there were 3,727 schools with solar panels in the US. This data comes from a report by the Solar Foundation, an organization that promotes the use of solar power Roxie Brown, a program director there, says that the number of schools with solar panels has continued to rise since 2014.(77) Solar power has some obvious advantage over other energy sources. Sunlight is a renewable(可再生的) resource, which means it won’t run out. Solar panels don’t harm the environment. A lso sunlight is free. So by using solar power, schools can save money on energy costs over time. But switching to solar power isn’t always easy Solar panels can be expensive to install. Sheridan Community Schools had to borrow money to pay for its solar transition. (78)The panels also take up space. But for many schools, going solar is worth is.The use of solar energy can also help students learn about electricity and environmental issues. Teacher at schools that use solar power often incorporate it into their science lessons. The kids talk about it in the classroom. Then they can look at it in action. According to Brown, the educational impact of solar panels it “the most compelling reason” for schools to install them.Brown hopes the panels will give Sheridan students a global perspective. “The world is bigger than the boundaries of their school district,” he says. “They’re doing things to help the world as a whole.”6.Sheridan Community Schools coasts of __ schools.A.TwoB. threeC. fourD. five7.According to the passage, solar energy has the following benefits EXCEPTthat ___.A.It creates no pollutionB.It can save moneyC.Solar panels are easy to maintainD.Solar energy is renewable8.The word incorporate in Paragraph 5 is closest m meaning to___.A.ReachB. improveC. run D include9.According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?A.Solar panels are very expensive to install.B.Sheridan Community Schools is completely solar-powered.C.In 2014, fewer than 1,000 schools used solar power in the US.D.More and more schools are switching to solar power to cut costs.10.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A.Solar PowerB.Schools Go SolarC.Cheap Energy SourcesD.AGi0bal PerspectivePassage 3Marley Dias loves nothing more than getting lost in a book. She enjoyed Where the Red Fem Grows and The Shiloh series, found in so many primary school classrooms, were all about white buys or dogs-or white boys and their dogs. Black girls, like Marley, were almost never the main character. What she was noticing is actually a much bigger issue: fewer than 10 percent of children’s books released in 2015 had a black person as the main character, according to a yearly analy sis by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center. In November 2015, Marley set out to gather 1,000 books with black girls as protagonists(主角). Her campaign called”#1000BlackGirlBooks”was a big success. (79) She far exceeded her goal and collected more than 10,000 books!” Through my campaign, I want to give kids a stronger sense of identity.” Marley says. (80) ”The biggest thing I’ve learned is that kid’s voices need to be heard.”In the future, Dias wants to be the editor(编辑) of her own magazine. She is already making the steps toward having a successful and meaningful career At 11, she’s aware of the racism in the publishing industry.Like the television and movies, the publishing industry does not represent black girls or other people of color in positive ways. The whitewashing(漂白) in this industry extend beyond not having people of color as characters. In 2012, white men wrote 88% of the book reviews. In 2013, only about 2% of the books were about black characters. Then if there are people of color in the books, the publishers attempt to whitewash people of color on the covers. However, Dias is making it a little easier for other black girls searching for a character that is just like them. I. Reading comprehensionPassage 1Since its founding in 1948, McDonald's has grown from a family burger (汉堡包) stand to a global fast-food chain, with more than 30,000 locations in 118 countries. With 58 million daily customers worldwide, McDonald’s is now so ubiquitous around the globe that The Economist publishes a global ranking of currencies' purchasing power based on the prices charged at the local McDonald’s, called the Big Mac Index (巨⽆霸指数).That’s not to say that every nation carries the same menu items: choices vary widely depending on location. Some Asian locations serve fried shrimp in a Big Mac roll, while McDonald’s in India doesn’t serve beef at all, relying instead on burgers made from vegetables, rice and beans. Not everyone in the world has been happy to greet Ronald McDonald when he moves to town. Many see McDonald's as a symbol of American economic and cultural chauvinism (沙⽂主义), and European nations in particular have viewed American-style fast food as an insult to their national food. A French farmer, Jose Bove, became something of a national hero in 1999 after he and a group of people destroyed a McDonald's under construction to protest globalization and "bad food." The next year, a bomb exploded in a French McDonald’s, killing a 27-year-old employee. Like most Native American children then, he liked to fish, hunt, swim, and play games outdoors. (76)He was healthy and strong, but he had very little formal education. In 1950, Jim Thorpe was named the greatest American football player. He was also an Olympic gold medal winner. But Thorpe had many tragedies in his life.Jim had a twin brother who died when he was nine years old. By the time he was 16, his mother and father were also dead. Jim then went to a special school in Pennsylvania for Native American children. There, he learned to read and write and also began to play sports. Jim was poor, so he left school for two years to earn some money. During this time, he played on a baseball team. (77) The team paid him only $15 a week. Soon he returned to school to complete his education. Jim was a star athlete(运动员) in several sports, including baseball, running and football. He won many awards for his athletic ability, mainly for football. In many games, he scored all or most of the points for his team.In 1912, when Jim Thorpe was 24 years old, he became part of the U. S Olympic team. He competed in two very difficult events: the pentathlon and the decathlon. Both require great ability and strength. The pentathlon has five track and field events, including the long jump and the 1,500-meter race. The decathlon hasten track and field and filed events, with running, jumping, and throwing contests.People thought it was impossible for an athlete to compete in both the pentathlon and the decathlon. All one has to do is walk by almost any nice gym and notice all the healthy, sweating, “skinny”members. Sometimes they stare at those of us who are , well, zaftig. It is easy to see the judgment behind their eyes. Who wants to put up with that? Many people are self-conscious of their bodies and feel isolated when joining workout classes or while exercising, especially if they are larger than most of the others in the group. Now the fitness industry is finally paying attention. Popular gyms are catering(迎合) to overweight and weight conscious customers by dedicating areas where the “skinny” people are not allowed. There are even gyms or programs that require members to be at least 50 pounds overweight to participate.Trainers recommended functional fitness as a practical goal, rather than six-pack abs(六块腹肌). (79)They often use text messages to stay in touch with customers. Often at these specialized gyms, the trainers are overweight themselves, or working on their own weight goals, and this can help those people with anxiety caused by poor body image. The equipment has been designed for use by larger people. Wider seats, more cushioning, no mirrors, and tinted(有⾊的) windows for privacy, are all important changes.(80) Hopefully these types of gyms will successfully grow in numbers in the future. The idea is a very simple and potentially popular one. If it helps those of us who are bigger exercise more and improve our fitness level, it’s a step in the right direction.11. Part I. Reading Comprehension (30%)Passage 1Flores Colque celebrated her 118th birthday last month. She is the oldest woman in Bolivia Following the death of a woman in Japan earlier this year, Flores Colque may now be the oldest person in the world. "If you would have told me you were coming, I’d have remembered all the songs," she joked. When she was growing up, Flores Colque herded sheep in the Bolivian highlands.(76)Then she moved to a valley, where she sold fruits and vegetables. Those fruits and vegetables became her main food, and she still eats a healthy diet—except for a piece of cake and a glass of soda sometimes. She never married and does not have children. She cannot hear very well, but she is alert(机敏的). Flores Colque’s age would make her interesting anywhere, but it is especially notable in Bolivia. The United Nations says the country has one of the South America's highest levels of death.1. Which of the following is TRUE?A. The oldest person in Japan was born in 1901.B. Which of the following statements about Flores Colque is NOT TRUE?A. She is easygoing.B. She keeps pets.C. She remains single all her life.D. In schools, teachers use games like Minecraft to encourage teamwork and critical thinking.(77)But for some players, gaming has become an unhealthy habit. Late at night, they are glued to a screen. Psychiatrist (精神科医生) Clifford Sussman treats gaming addiction (上瘾). (78)He says kids often have feelings of anxiety and loneliness. More than anything in the world, he wanted to learn how to sing. His school in Yonkers—just north of New York City—didn’t offer the music instruction he needed. So he begged his parents to sign him for after-school lessons.Jayden's mother wanted to help her son follow his passion. (79)But private lessons were too expensive. Jayden, then 6 years old, knew exactly what to do. He took out his iPad. Then he began searching after-school arts programs. He soon came across the website for Harlem School of the Arts (HSA), in New York City. There, he could take voice and dance lessons. It was a bit far from Yonkers. But he convinced his parents to take him for a visit. That was three years ago. Now Jayden is one of HSA'S most active students. He takes singing, dancing, or theater lessons almost every day after school. (80)Last year, he performed in seven productions.Like Jayden, students in many communities across the United States have limited access (使用的机会或权利) to arts instruction in schools. HSA is one of many nonprofit groups that bridges this gap by offering affordable arts classes. Groups like HSA are funded by donations (捐赠) and state grants. Many also receive money from the federal government’s National Endowment (基金)for the Arts (NEA).The NEA was established in 1965. Its goal is to promote access to the arts for all Americans. Some people, however, believe it's not the responsibility of the federal government to provide arts funding. President Donald Trump’s 2019 proposal calls on Congress to reduce NEA funding and eventually eliminate the agency, The Trump administration argues that private and other public sources already provide funding for the arts. Congress has yet to make a decision.Supporters of arts education say cutting the NEA is a bad idea. It could leave many children unable to participate in the arts. That‘s because 40% of the agency’s grants go to high-poverty neighborhoods.11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Arts Education Is ExpensiveB. Some Asian locations serve fried shrimp in a Big Mac roll, while McDonald’s in India doesn’t serve beef at all, relying instead on burgers made from vegetables, rice and beans. Not everyone in the world has been happy to greet Ronald McDonald when he moves to town. Many see McDonald's as a symbol of American economic and cultural chauvinism (沙文主义), and European nations in particular have viewed American-style fast food as an insult to their national food. A French farmer, Jose Bove, became something of a national hero in 1999 after he and a group of people destroyed a McDonald's under construction to protest globalization and "bad food."
