1Walt Whitman and Allen GinsbergWalt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg are both famous poets of modern America. Whitman had an open mind about writing methods and sexual preference, so he had been suffering censure for his life. While Allen Ginsberg concentrate in fields of art, literature and philosophy. They have obvious connection between their styles of poetry.Walt Whitman was born in 1819, an American poet, essayist and journalist. He had a controversial life because of his works and his sexual preference. Especially, in his poetry collection called Leaves of Grass, he expressed his sexual interest to man, which was considered as obscene attitude to sexuality. But, it did not stop him from becoming one of the most influential poets in the field of free verse in America. Different with other poets, he was enthusiastic about politics. Supporting for the Wilmot Proviso, he held the perspective that every race should be equally treated. He once opposed the extension of slavery generally: ―His poetry presented an egalitarian view of the races, and at one point he called for the abolition of slavery, but later he saw the abolitionist movement as a threat to democracy.‖ (1)His poetry, in some degree, broke the boundaries of traditional poetic. It was a time when realism was taking place of Transcendentalism; so, both of the two popular style were showed in his works. For example, in his most famous poet ―From Song of Myself‖:I celebrate myself, and sing myself,2 …I breathe the fragrance myself and know it and like it…You should no longer take things at second and third hand, nor look through the eyes of the dead, nor feed on the specters in booksI am satisfied—I see, dance, laugh, sing; (519--520)From the sentences quoted from the poem above, it is apparent that Walt Whitman always mentioned about death and sexuality with an advanced and open mind. The conventional methods of composing which like meters, rhyme scheme and alliteration rarely appeared in this poem. On the contrary, he adopted the free verse in which he can express his emotions and feelings freely. That is the reason why he was labeled as the father of free verse; however, there is one point should be emphasized is that he did not invent the free verse, while he make unconventional style famous and fashionable.In his poem, the emotions were often conveyed by first-person statement which is the most powerful way to do a narration and describe the main theme directly, and most frequent used in romantic poetry. In a word, Walt Whitman’s poetic theory is: "The proof of a poet is that his country absorbs him as affectionately as he has absorbed it."(2), which was concluded by himself, because he believed there is an extremely connection between poet and society.By contrast, Allen Ginsberg was a much modern poet who was born in 1920s and did not die until 1997. Different with Whitman’s free verse, Ginsberg was famous of his beat generation in the 1950s. He was interested in philosophy and art and behaved actively rejected the militarism, materialism and sexual repression, which resembled with Whitman. The best known poem written by Ginsberg is ―Howl‖, an epic poem:I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed bymadness, starving hysterical naked,dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawnlooking for an angry fix ...In the poem above, Ginsberg got inspiration from the free verse style of Whitman’s poems in 19th century. And this is also one of the poems of beat generation.In his another famous poem called A Supermarket in California; he used a lot of short sentences, phrases, commas to compose a long sentence with dozen of strong beats. The wording he attempted is straightforward and easy to understand. The entire poem is like a refreshing and nature wind bellowing around you. J. D. McClatchy, editor of the Yale Review, called Ginsberg "the best-known American poet of his generation, as much a social force as a literary phenomenon." McClatchy added that Ginsberg, like Whitman, "was a bard in the old manner – outsized, darkly prophetic, part exuberance, part prayer, part rant. His work is finally a history of our era's psyche, with all its contradictory urges."
