A Review on “The Landlady”IntroductionRoald Dahl, a well-known writer, his works are popular among children of all ages. Many of his stories, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach, have become classics in their own time. The Landlady,is one of Roald Dahl’s most famous fictions.BodyThe Landlady mainly tells about Billy Weaver, the protagonist, who was anew-comer to the City of Bath. He was looking for accommodation and was recommended to the Bell and Dragon. On his way to the hotel, he came across a house, whose window has a striking notice: “BED AND BREAKFAST.” When Billy wanted to go straight to the hotel, something strange happened—it seemed that something compelled and force him to stay there and not to walk away from that house. On an impulse, he rang the doorbell and wanted to check it out whether this house was suitable or not. For an instant, out the landlady popped! So quickly that Billy didn’t even have time to take his fingers from the bell-button. She is a little old lady and treated him generously, giving him a floor of his own to stay on, and charging him much less than he expected. However, when signing the guest-book, he found that there were just two names signed by over two years ago. According to the landlady, these two men were handsome young men just like him who were still living in the fourth floor. Meanwhile, they strike him as being vaguely familiar from the newspaper. When he tried to remember something about the two men, the landlady invited him for a cup of tea. At this time, he came to realized that the parrot in a cage was not alive at all, is stuffed, the same with the little dachshund by the fire. Billy felt shocked when he learned that the landlady was a taxidermist and she stuffed all her own pets. For a relief, he drank some tea. But it tasted strange with a bitter almond odor. Finally, Billy asked her again, “Haven't there been any other guests here except them in the last two or three years?" She gave him a little smile as she replied, "No, my dear, only you."Analysis and EvaluationIf we read deeply, we can find some detail information to help us to truly understand the whole fiction and we should read between lines. Here, let me show you the hint that can help you find the truth.Firstly, as Billy mentioned, when he caught sight of the two names on the guest-book, something familiar came to his mind, because both of the two men are “famous” for something, but he could not remember at that time. From my point of view, they were murdered and stuffed by the landlady so the newspaper reported to the public and Billy had seen the news before. Secondly, it is said that there was a certain smell that emanated from her thatremained him Billy of a hospital. This suggests to the readers that the smell was a chemical substance named formaldehyde, which is often used in the preservation of bodies, at hospitals. In addition, from the stuffed parrot and dachshund and her red fingernail, we can learn that she was a taxidermist. Of course, she not only stuffed his pets, but also stuffed human beings.Thirdly, as the landlady mentioned, the two men had perfect skin, with no mark at all, and were handsome like Billy. What’s more, the tea the landlady offered had “bitter almonds" taste. In many suspense stories, potassium cyanide is said to have a "bitter almond" taste. Knowing this, we can infer that the landlady poisoned Billy, and would proceed to stuff him.In conclusion, Billy would be the next victim and stuffed by the landlady. The author ends the story at its climax; the reader is left in suspense as to what happen to Billy Weaver later. So the author is successful in doing this. It is a great suspense novel and I think highly of it. So I strongly recommend you to read it.ConclusionIn conclusion, it is a wonderful novel for you to read. It contains the element of suspense and mystery. When you read it, you should pay more attention to the critical hints to help you understand the truth. Hope you will enjoy it.IntroductionHere you want to provide basic information about the book, and a sense of what your report will be about.
