The Thing About HappinessThere is a certain desperation that fills the air, stifling and consistently pressing for submission. People today frantically devote themselves to this never ending lack of contentment. However, most people see no issue with this lifestyle. In fact, Americans have come so far as to believe this anxiety is their due, for it stands as the basis over which their forefathers waged war: happiness may be the right of every individual, but it’s incompatible with modern life. The endless opportunities and amenities available to us seem to work in a counterproductive manner in American society. Pursuing eternal happiness, rather than instant gratification, ultimately becomes a vicious circle. In society, happiness is often an emotion driven by greed or personal interest. According to research, people experience joy when they receive their desired outcome (Wells). Logically, this makes sense. If one person longs for something, then the acquisition of that object should elicit a sense of delight. Unfortunately, the lifespan for this fickle emotion is fleeting, thus the first dilemma is encountered: What happens when the buzz wears off? What happens when the achievement ceases to inspire happiness? If the past is any indication, Americans just find a new trend to fawn over. Then the same process is repeated. And repeated. And repeated. This is in part just a result of the brain. Many scientists have shown how the brain uses chemicals referred to as neurotransmitters to relay specific feelings and functions to neurons and other cells. Serotonin and dopamine are a couple of these happiness-inducing chemicals (Mehta). People crave the high they get from pleasurable emotions; nevertheless, the sensation is brief and people go right back to searching for the new temporary “happy neurotransmitter.” Researcher Emily Esfahani Smith said it best: “It is the very pursuit of happiness that thwarts happiness.” This cycle—and our obsession with choice—have in fact made us unhappier than ever.Oddly enough, the basic elements depicted as beneficial to pleasure, such as choice and opportunities, are the very thing making us less pleased. In a 2004 Ted Talk video, the presenter cited a study on students buying pictures. Half the group was told they had five days to pick their picture and that they could return or exchange the image any time throughout the duration of the process. The other half of the group was told that they had to immediately choose their photo and that there would be no returns or exchanges available. Amazingly, the group with no alternative options had much happier results (The Surprising Science of Happiness). The mind has a way of making the body and the heart at peace when facing no other options. That said, for as much struggling as the pursuit of happiness may cause, true joy cannot be experienced without first comprehending its opposite. Essentially, one extreme cannot be appreciated by someone without that person having suffered at the hands of its antithesis. In a sense, perhaps our short-lived happiness and ensuing dissatisfaction are necessary to achieving—if it even is achievable—happiness. The complicated mess that is happiness will never reach a cessation due to the fact that there will always be new pursuits and opportunities, directing people in a cycle of satisfaction and dissatisfaction that we hope will lead to our “rightful” happiness. In a short-term world, instant gratification is easy to come by; however, by its very nature, lasting happiness seems programmed to elude the majority of Americans.Works CitedMehta, Suketu. happiness的英语演讲稿篇二Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen, good evening. I’m xxx, major in xxx, grade xxx. It’s my great honor to be here and discuss the familiar topic “happiness” with all of you. Firstly ,a brief introduction of myself. Actually, once make self-introduction, the first point I would like to emphasize is that I e from Shangrao Yushan, one of the world natural heritage site—San Qing mountain is just located there. After these words, I particularly willing to lo(.)ok forward to your envious eyes. The second is about my mother school-Yushan NO.1 middle school, I still remember used to give a presentation of the school, paring its front door to the one of Peking university, then all the students and our teacher laughed .I love my hometown, and I am really proud of my mother school. Thank you.OK, so let’s get into the topic—happiness. As I’ve mentioned just now, it’s a familiar topic since we have discussed during our class meetings for several times. What impresses me most is a sentence from our dear secretary Xiong. He says: Our destination is happiness, but the process is much or less painful. So today, with the indoctrination of our secretary, I’m going to re-interpretation an old story, and to share my view of happiness. Believe that you all have read the story of the rich and the fisherman. Yeah, the rich teaches the fisherman how to bee a billionaire, so as to have a carefree holiday and enjoy life at the seaside like him. But, what’s the fisherman’s answer? Don’t you think I’m now enjoying the result of all the processes you have just said?——that’s the answer. Well, when first read the story, I thought the fisherman is very palladian, even believed that enjoying the moment was more important than just hard work. However, once again to review the story with the secretary’s words, I awaken to the truth immediately. We are born in different background, grow up in a different environment, in a word, we are different. As I always believe, everyone on the big stage of life has his own role, we all burden various missions when e to the world. The fisherman is content with the status, repeating simple life day-after-day, enjoying the peace and serenity. But he’s just satisfied with self demand, his contribution to the society ,however, is rather limited. Then, let’s turn to the rich with great ambition. After enjoying the short holiday, he has to get back to his business, continue to struggle, to bring more joy to his family through his owneffort, and, last but not least, to create great value to the society. Obviously, the two protagonists in the story are living in two different ways. But I believe both of them want to reach the happiness destination in their mind. We are also the same. As we grow, we are always in constant choices. And often the choices we make is based on our inner yearning for happiness.Maybe sometimes, we are not so lucky, just have to accept some facts rather than make our own choice, such as success or failure, or the death of relatives or friends. Or maybe sometimes, our eyes are not so bright, our intellectual is not so maturity, and then get to a wrong way when pursuit happiness, for example, hurt the closest person around us, or even do something illegal. However, life is a practice. All we suffer will help us bee more stronger and powerful, and gradually ,we will have more choices about our own life. Whether to be a rich, or to enjoy life like the fisherman. Howsoever, we are pleased with our life, and we feel happy. Finally,What I would like to emphasize is that no matter what we experience on the way, we cannot ignore the family members, relatives, friends ,and our lovers. They care about us now and then ,our happiness is often affects theirs. Just cherish everyone we met or will meet. Whoever loves us ,loved by us, offers help, or even hurts us. Ok, as there es an end to my speech ,I wish you all are enjoying happiness, or are just on the way. As we have no choice about success or failure but we can choice to work hard, so, let’s work hard together for our happiness, let’s fighting. Thank you.happiness的英语演讲稿篇三It is a monplace among moralists that you cannot get happiness by pursuing it. This is only true if you pursue it unwisely. Gamblers at Monte Carlo are pursuing money, and most of them lose it instead, but there are other ways of pursuing money, which often succeed. So it is with happiness. If you pursue it by means of drink, you are forgetting the hangover. Epicurus pursued it by living only in congenial society and eating only dry bread, supplemented by a little cheese on feast days. His method proved successful in his case, but he was a valetudinarian, and most people would need something more vigorous. For most people, the pursuit of happiness, unless supplemented in various ways, is too abstract and theoretical to be adequate as a personal rule of life. But I think that whatever personal rule of life you may choose it should not, except in rare and heroic cases, be inpatible with happiness. If you look around at the men and women whom you can call happy, you will see that they all have certain things in mon.The most important of these things is an activity which at most gradually builds up something that you are glad to see ing into existence. Women who take an instinctive pleasure in their children can get this kind of satisfaction out of bringing up a family. Artists and authors and men of science get happiness in this way if their own work sseems good to them. But there are many humbler forms of the same kind of pleasure. Many men who spend their working life in the city devote their weekends to voluntary and unremunerated toil in their gardens, and when the spring es, they experience all the joys of having created beauty. The whole subject of happiness has, in my opinion, been treated too solemnly. It had been thought that man cannot be happy without a theory of life or a religion. Perhaps those who have been rendered unhappy by a bad theory may need a better theory to help them to recover, just as you may need a tonic when you have been ill. But when things are normal a man should be healthy without a tonic and happy without a theory. It is the simple things that really matter. If a man delights in his wife and children, has success in work, and finds pleasure inthe alternation of day and night, spring and autumn, he will be happy whatever his philosophy may be. If, on the other hand, he finds his wife fateful, his children’s noise unendurable, and the office a nightmare; if in the daytime he longs for night, and at night sighs for the light of day, then what he needs is not a new philosophy but a new regimen--a different diet, or more exercise, or what not. Man is an animal, and his happiness depends on his physiology more than he likes to think. This is a humble conclusion, but I cannot make myself disbelieve it. Unhappy businessmen, I am convinced, would increase their happiness more by walking six miles every day than by any conceivable change of philosophy.happiness的英语演讲稿篇四It is a monplace among moralists that you cannot get happiness by pursuing it. this is only true if you pursue it unwisely. gamblers at monte carlo are pursuing money, and most of them lose it instead, but there are other ways of pursuing money, which often succeed. so it is with happiness. if you pursue it by means of drink, you are forgetting the hangover. epicurus pursued it by living only in congenial society and eating only dry bread, supplemented by a little cheese on feast days. his method proved successful in his case, but he was a valetudinarian, and most people would need something more vigorous. for most people, the pursuit of happiness, unless supplemented in various ways, is too abstract and theoretical to be adequate as a personal rule of life. but i think that whatever personal rule of life you may choose it should not, e_cept in rare and heroic cases, be inpatible with happiness. if you look around at the men and women whom you can call happy, you will see that they all have certain things in mon.The most important of these things is an activity which at most gradually builds up something that you are glad to see ing into e_istence. women who take an instinctive pleasure in their children can get this kind of satisfaction out of bringing up a family. artists and authors and men of science get happiness in this way if their own work seems good to them. but there are many humbler forms of the same kind of pleasure. many men who spend their working life in the city devote their weekends to voluntary and unremunerated toil in their gardens, and when the spring es, they e_perience all the joys of having created beauty. the whole subject of happiness has, in my opinion, been treated too solemnly. It had been thought that man cannot be happy without a theory of life or a religion. perhaps those who have been rendered unhappy by a bad theory may need a better theory to help them to recover, just as you may need a tonic when you have been ill. but when things are normal a man should be healthy without a tonic and happy without a theory. it is the simple things that really matter. if a man delights in his wife and children, has success in work, and finds pleasure in the alternation of day and night, spring and autumn, he will be happy whatever his philosophy may be. if, on the other hand, he finds his wife fateful, his children’s noise unendurable, and the office a nightmare; if in the daytime he longs for night, and at night sighs for the light of day, then what he needs is not a new philosophy but a new regimen--a different diet, or more e_ercise, or what not. man is an animal, and his happiness depends on his physiology more than he likes to think. this is a humble conclusion, but i cannot make myself disbelieve it. unhappy businessmen, i am convinced, would increase their happiness more by walking si_ miles every day than by any conceivable change of philosophy.Thangk you.happiness的英语演讲稿篇五As we all know, happiness is something that everyone is chasing. But, what is happiness? Does happiness have a universal definition? I say no. But there must be something in life that makes you realize what it means. When you are hungry, you have something to eat. When you have each tiny wish e true, don’t you feel happy?I always try my best to find out what is the true meaning of happiness. And I think I have got lots of it from my career. Of course, the “queen” was me. One day, our P.E teacher was out for business trip. So it was my duty to be the leader in this P.E class. After guiding students to play games for a long time. Everyone was tired. Then, one student lay down. Then, another?in a minute, all of the students lay down on the playground. It was so enjoyable for me to see such a great situation, as in the classroom our lovely guys always sit properly to show their poritive attitudes. The sun was shining. The wind was blowing. Smelling the faint smell of flowers, I couldn’t help closing my eyes and lying on my back. Suddently, a tiny hand touched my arm. “Queen, you must be tired after a day’s work. Right? I’m your faithful maid. Let me serve for you.” Then, the other students came over to sit and serve around me. Head, neck, leg. Wow, that was really a great happiness to have such an experience.Dear friends, everyday we have a lot of work to do. Everyday we have a lot of things to plain. But, just like Xiao Shenyang saying, “The eyes close and open - a day is over. The eyes close but never open , all life has gone.” Time is limited. Why can’t we focus on our lovely students and keep a happy mind in the school life? Just like me. Lie down and enjoy the happiness from my kids.Happiness 篇六What is happiness? Different people have different ideas. Some people are rich; they think they are happy. Other people have many friends, so they feel happy. Still others are happy because their lives are meaningful. Happiness attracts(吸引)everyone. For children, happiness often suggests eating something good or playing with toys. For a stamp collector, stamps bring more delight than meals. And for a scientist, a discovery or an invention rather than anything else gives him greatest satisfaction.幸福是什么?不同的人有不同的想法。

I am ..from..##. I am going to start my speech with a question. How can we harvest happiness? As for this question, most of you have thought about it incidentally or purposefully. While have you figured out the way? Next, I will share my understanding of this question. For me, the road to happiness is the way to fight for my goals and desires. As a matter of fact, I have been on the road to happiness from the moment I was born. When I was 5, I racked my brains(绞尽脑汁)to get a Barbie doll or a teddy bear. In order to get them, I was willing to attend the piano class which actually was the last thing I wanted to do. However, on thinking of my little dolls, I forgot all the pains in the piano class. I deeply believed that I was realizing my happiness, and I was on the road to my happiness. When I was 10,I was fascinated by the title of NO.1 which could bring me a huge sense of success. TO be the NO.1, I sacrificed my rest time to attend all kinds of training classes, and I saved my pocket money to afford reference books. These might sound painful for most 10 years old children. But as long as I achieved my goal, Ithought I was on the road to happiness. When I was 15, I became an enthusiast of painting. I enjoyed the way to express myself by means of different colors.. with a strong desire to improve my painting techniques, I attend a painting class. I travelled between the painting center and my home for hours. What is more, none of my t-shirts and skirts could have a narrow escape from those pigments. However, I still felt happy, because I was fighting for my desire little by little.Time flies. I am 20-year-old now. by comparison with 5-yeae-old and ten-year-old, I harvest more desired things, such as love form friends, care from teachers and CDs signed by celebrities. The feeling is always the same. By this time, I realize that as long as I fight for my goals and desires, I will feel excited, fulfilled and satisfied. Today, my goal is to present a perfect a speech to all of you. Now I am working on it. Hence I can say I am harvesting happiness, and I am on the road to happiness.

As long as you're satisfied with the things that you have, you will find happiness. Then how should we pursue happiness?Firstly, as far as I'm concerned, the mental state is very important, it determines if you can gain happiness. If you always feel unsatisfied, you will never feel happy; on the contrary, if you know we shouldn't ask for too much from life, happiness will surround you.secondly, helping others is another way to get happiness, for we will own a sense of achievement and feel happy by givingsomeone a hand when he is in trouble. The last but not least, loving makes a great difference to happiness. If you have love in your heart, you will have happiness in your life.In a word, happiness is quite a simple thing and just surrounding all of us, though happiness is precious, it is easy to get as long as we have a positive attitude toward life.It is universally acknowledged that happiness is the most precious thing that may be the ultimate goal we long for reach in our life. Happiness is that when you're thirsty, someone handed water to you, happiness is that when you are tired, someone will rub your shoulders. As long as you're satisfied with what you own, you will become a happy person. Then how should we pursue happiness?Firstly, as far as I'm concerned, the mental state is very important, it determines wether you can gain happiness or not. If you always feel unsatisfied, you will never feel happy; on the contrary, if you understand we shouldn't ask for too much from life, happiness will surround you. Secondly, helping others is another way to get happiness, for we will retain a sense of achievement and feel happy by offering someone a hand when he is in trouble. Last but not least, Love can produce happiness. That is to say: where there is love there is happinessIn a word, happiness is quite a simple thing and just surrounding all of us, though happiness is precious, it is easy to get as long as we maintain a positive attitude toward life.It is acknowledged that happiness is the most precious thing that everyone of us want to pursue in our life.Knowing the truth, Yet many people still don't realize what is happiness especially in the modern societry. Many modern man struggle hard to seek happiness in exhaustion of every means but to no avail, because they have forgotten to listen to their own hearts. It's inarguable that wealth ,career success and good social standing are essential for us to attain fulfillment and sustain ourselves, but to simply equate them with happiness is a serious error.Money does not buy happiness.Happiness is a state of mind, which is not directly relate to the digits on your bank account, the propety you own or the prize you own but is more often than not determined by one's own free choice. As the proverb tells,a begger can be happier than a king.Beyond any dispute, everyone has the unassailable freedom to pursue happiness but whether we can achieve that promise depends on us following our hearts, instead of burdening it with wordly concerns. To become happier,we have to change our inner attitudes as much as our outward circumstances. We should have a policy for promiting a healthier philosophy of life and be guided to distinguish between superficial pleasures and real happiness. It would inspire us in our daily lives to take more pleasure in the happiness of others, and to promote it.In this way we might all become less self-centered and happier. It is universally acknowledged that happiness is the most precious thing that may be the ultimate goal we long for reach in our life. However, what is happiness? There may be many answers about it, for people's views toward happiness vary much. Some people seem to think that wealth represents happiness, while a lot of people consider career as happiness, still others look on status as happiness and the like. It's inarguable that wealth, career success and good social standing are essential for us to attain fulfillment and sustain ourselves, but to simply equate them with happiness is a serious error. Money can not buy happiness, nor does career and status. The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy; I mean that if you are happy you will be good.Someone asks me what does happiness mean on earth? In reality, happiness is simple, and it has no shape, no color and even no flavour, furthermore, happiness can't be seen or touched. Nevertheless, we can possess the feeling of happiness when we are satisfied. Just as the old saying goes: "happy is he who is content. " I can't agree with it any more. Happiness is that when you're thirsty, someone handed water to you, happiness is that when you are tired, someone will rub your shoulders. As long as you're satisfied with what you own, you will become a happy person. Happiness exits in every corner of life, but we often forget where it is. There are some suggestions to become a happy person.Firstly, as far as I'm concerned, the mental state is very important, it determines wether you can gain happiness or not. If you always feel unsatisfied, you will never feel happy; on the contrary, if you understand we shouldn't ask for too much from life, happiness will surround you. Last but not least, Love can produce happiness. That is to say: where there is love there is happiness. In a word, happiness is quite a simple thing and just surrounding all of us.Though happiness is precious, it is easy to get as long as we maintain a positive attitude toward life. However, as everything exists only because its opposite, happiness exists only when pain exists. Just as a person who does not know failure never knows success, a person, who has not experienced suffering or sadness never knows what happiness means. Happiness is like a butterfly; the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder. Ever since happiness heard your name, it has been running through the streets trying to find you.。
Happiness is a complex and multifaceted concept that has been the subject of philosophical inquiry, literary exploration, and personal reflection for centuries. Here are some key insights into understanding happiness:1.Subjective Experience:Happiness is a subjective state that varies from person to person. What brings joy to one individual may not have the same effect on another. It is deeply personal and can be influenced by ones values, beliefs, and experiences.2.Moments of Joy:Happiness can be found in everyday moments. It is not always about grand achievements or significant life events.Simple pleasures, such as enjoying a meal with loved ones,a beautiful sunset,or a good conversation, can bring happiness.3.Gratitude:Cultivating gratitude is often linked to increased happiness.Recognizing and appreciating what one has, rather than focusing on what is lacking, can lead to a more contented state of mind.4.Positive Relationships:Strong social connections and positive relationships are fundamental to happiness.Humans are social beings, and the support, love, and companionship of others can greatly enhance ones sense of wellbeing.5.Meaning and Purpose:Having a sense of meaning and purpose in life is closely tied to happiness.Engaging in activities that align with ones values and passions can provide a deep sense of fulfillment.6.Resilience:Happiness is not about the absence of challenges but rather the ability to navigate through them with resilience.Learning from setbacks and maintaining a positive outlook can contribute to overall happiness.7.Balance:A balanced life, where work, leisure, and personal growth are all given attention, can lead to a more harmonious existence.Overemphasis on any one area can lead to dissatisfaction.8.Mindfulness:Being present and mindful in the moment can enhance happiness. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation, can help individuals to focus on the present and appreciate the here and now.9.SelfAcceptance:Accepting oneself, including ones strengths and weaknesses,is a crucial aspect of happiness.Selfacceptance allows for personal growth and a more authentic life experience.10.Health and Wellbeing:Physical health and mental wellbeing are integral to happiness. Regular exercise,a balanced diet, and mental health practices can all contribute to a happier life.11.Financial Security:While money cannot buy happiness, financial security can alleviate stress and provide the freedom to pursue personal interests and goals.12.Altruism:Acts of kindness and helping others can increase ones own happiness. Altruism can create a sense of connection and purpose.13.Cultural and Personal Differences:Its important to recognize that cultural and personal differences can influence what is considered happiness. What is valued and sought after in one culture may differ greatly from another.14.Lifelong Pursuit:Happiness is not a destination but a lifelong pursuit. It requires continuous effort and selfreflection to maintain and enhance.15.Holistic Approach:A holistic approach to happiness, considering physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing, can lead to a more comprehensive understanding of what it means to be happy. In conclusion, happiness is a deeply personal and dynamic experience that can be influenced by a variety of factors. It is not a static state but rather a journey that requires attention, care, and the willingness to embrace lifes ups and downs.。
Happiness is a complex and multifaceted concept that has been the subject of philosophical, psychological, and literary exploration for centuries. It is often perceived as a state of wellbeing and contentment, but the understanding of what constitutes happiness can vary greatly among individuals and cultures. The Philosophical Approach:From a philosophical perspective, happiness has been defined in various ways.Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle viewed happiness,or eudaimonia,as a form of flourishing that arises from living a virtuous life.He believed that happiness was not merely a fleeting emotion but a deep sense of fulfillment that comes from engaging in meaningful activities and cultivating moral virtues. The Psychological Perspective:Psychologists have also delved into the study of happiness, with some focusing on the factors that contribute to a persons overall sense of wellbeing.Positive psychology,a branch of psychology that emphasizes the study of positive human qualities, has identified several key elements of happiness, including positive emotions, engagement in activities, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. The Role of Emotions:Emotions play a significant role in happiness.Positive emotions such as joy, gratitude, and love are often associated with happiness. However, the pursuit of happiness is not solely about experiencing positive emotions it also involves managing negative emotions effectively and finding meaning in challenging experiences.Engagement and Flow:The concept of flow introduced by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is another important aspect of happiness.Flow occurs when a person is so deeply engaged in an activity that they lose track of time and are completely absorbed in what they are doing. This state of deep engagement can lead to a sense of happiness and fulfillment. Relationships and Social Connections:Strong social connections and supportive relationships are also crucial for happiness. Humans are inherently social beings, and the quality of our relationships with family, friends, and community members can greatly influence our sense of wellbeing. The Pursuit of Meaning:Beyond the pursuit of pleasure, happiness is often linked to the pursuit of meaning and purpose in life. This can involve setting and achieving personal goals, contributing to something larger than oneself,or engaging in activities that align with ones values and beliefs.Cultural Differences:Its important to note that the understanding of happiness can differ across cultures. While some cultures may place a high value on individual achievement and material success, others may prioritize community wellbeing and spiritual fulfillment. The Role of Mindfulness:Mindfulness,or the practice of being present and aware in the moment, has also been linked to happiness.By focusing on the present, individuals can better appreciate the positive aspects of their lives and cultivate a more positive outlook. The Balance of Hedonism and Eudaimonia:Finally,a balanced approach to happiness that combines both hedonistic pleasureseeking and eudaimonic meaningfocused elements is often advocated. This balance allows individuals to experience the joys of life while also pursuing a deeper sense of fulfillment and purpose. In conclusion, happiness is a rich and nuanced concept that encompasses a variety of elements, from positive emotions and meaningful activities to strong relationships and a sense of purpose.Understanding and cultivating happiness is a lifelong journey that requires selfreflection, personal growth, and an openness to different perspectives on what it means to live a happy life.。

AUGUST 31, 2011, 6:05 PMHappiness, Philosophy and ScienceBy GARY GUTTINGThe Stone is a forum for contemporary philosophers on issues both timely and timeless. Tags:Happiness, Philosophy, psychologyThe Stone is featuring occasional posts by Gary Gutting, a professor of philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, that apply critical thinking to information and events that have appeared in the news.Philosophy was the origin of most scientific disciplines. Aristotle was in some sense an astronomer, a physicist, a biologist, a psychologist and a political scientist. As various philosophical subdiscplines found ways of treating their topics with full empirical rigor, they gradually separated themselves from philosophy, which increasingly became a purely armchair enterprise, working not from controlled experiments but from common-sense experiences and conceptual analysis. In recent years, however, the sciences — in particular, psychology and the social sciences — have begun to return to their origin, combining data and hypotheses with conceptual and normative considerations that are essentially philosophical. An excellent example of this return is the new psychological science of happiness, represented, for example, by the fundamental work of Edward Diener. The empirical basis of this discipline is a vast amount of data suggesting correlations (or lack thereof) between happiness and various genetic, social, economic, and personal factors. Some of the results are old news: wealth, beauty, and pleasure, for example, have little effect on happiness. But there are some surprises: serious illness typically does not make us much less happy, marriage in the long run is not a major source of either happiness or unhappiness. The new research has both raised hopes and provoked skepticism. Psychologists such as Sonja Lyubomirsky have developed a new genre of self-help books, purporting to replace the intuitions and anecdotes of traditional advisors with scientific programs for making people happy. At the same time, there are serious methodological challenges, questioning, for example, the use of individuals’ self-reports of how happy they are and the effort to objectify and even quantify so subjective and elusive a quality as happiness. But the most powerful challenge concerns the meaning and value of happiness. Researchers emphasize that when we ask people if they are happy the answers tell usnothing if we don’t know what our respondents mean by “happy.” One person might mean, “I’m not currently feeling any serious pain”; another, “My life is pretty horrible but I’m reconciled to it”; another, “I’m feeling a lot better than I did yesterday.” Happiness research requires a clear understanding of the possible meanings of the term. For example, most researchers distinguish between happiness as a psychological state (for example, feeling overall more pleasure than pain) and happiness as a positive evaluation of your life, even if it has involved more pain than pleasure. Above all, there is the fundamental question: In which sense, if any, is happiness a proper goal of a human life? These issues inevitably lead to philosophical reflection. Empirical surveys can give us a list of the different ideas people have of happiness. But research has shown that when people achieve their ideas of happiness (marriage, children, wealth, fame), they often are still not happy. There’s no reason to think that the ideas of happiness we discover by empirical surveys are sufficiently well thought out to lead us to genuine happiness. For richer and more sensitive conceptions of happiness, we need to turn to philosophers, who, from Plato and Aristotle, through Hume and Mill, to Hegel and Nietzsche, have provided some of the deepest insight into the possible meanings of happiness.Even if empirical investigation could discover the full range of possible conceptions of happiness, there would still remain the question of which conception we ought to try to achieve. Here we have a question of values that empirical inquiry alone is unable to decide without appeal to philosophical thinking. This is not to say that, as Plato thought, we can simply appeal to expert philosophical opinion to tells us how we ought to live. We all need to answer this question for ourselves. But if philosophy does not have the answers, it does provide tools we need to arrive at answers. If, for example, we are inclined to think that pleasure is the key to happiness, John Stuart Mill shows us how to distinguish between the more sensory and the more intellectual pleasures. Robert Nozick asks us to consider whether we would choose to attach ourselves to a device that would produce a constant state of intense pleasure, even if we never achieved anything in our lives other than experiencing this pleasure. On another level, Immanuel Kant asks whether happiness should even be a goal of a good human life, which, he suggests, is rather directed toward choosing to do the right thing even if it destroys our happiness. Nietzsche and Sartre help us consider whether even morality itself is a worthy goal of human existence. These essential questions are not empirical.Still, psychologists understandably want to address such questions, and their scientific data can make an important contribution to the discussion. But to the extent that psychology takes on questions about basic human values, it is taking on a humanistic dimension that needs to engage with philosophy and the other disciplines — history, art, literature, even theology — that are essential for grappling with the question of happiness. (For a good discussion of philosophical views of happiness and their connection to psychological work, see Dan Haybron’s Stanford Encyclopedia article.) Psychologists should recognize this and give up the pretension that empirical investigations alone can answer the big questions about happiness. Philosophers and other humanists, in turn, should be happy to welcome psychologists into their world. Copyright 2011The New York Times Company Privacy Policy 620 Eighth Avenue New York, NY 10018。
