Students then listen to the cassette and complete the Function File, checking if their predictions are correct.T: In this class we are going to learn to express guesses, assumptions, and beliefs. Please listen to the extracts from the monologues and complete the Function File.Deal with Ex 7.Ask students to complete the sentences to express guesses, assumptions and beliefs.Step 3 Language powerDeal with Ex 1 in Language Power Lesson 2 Name Stories on page 54.Ask students to do Ex 1 in pairs. They will be given five minutes to finish the exercise. Five minutes later, check the answers with the whole class.Step 4 Function File IIGo through the linking words in Ex 8 on page 9. Ask students to discuss what information the linking words add to the sentences (i.e. information about the time of events and the sequence of events). Students fill in the blanks with the linking words first, then listen to the cassette to check their work.T: It’s easy to understand the functions of “after that”, “and then”, “suddenly” as linking words. How about “guess what”? What kind of information does it suggest?Ss: It is used before you tell someone something that will surprise them.Step 5 Language powerDeal with Ex 1& 2 in Language power Lesson 2 Name Stories on page 54.Ask students to do Ex 1 individually. They will be given six minutes to finish the exercise. Six minutes later, check the answers with the whole class. Then go on with Ex 2. After checking the answers, ask students to retell the story. Remind them of the linking words.Step 6 PronunciationFirst tell students what contractions are, then ask them to do the exercises about contractions. Step 7 Writing and SpeakingDeal with Ex 10.Ask students to think about stories attached to their parents’ names, using the question cues towrite notes.Students wo rk in pairs, discussing their parents’ names, using the question cues and their notes. Then ask some pairs to act out their dialogues in front of the class. Then work in pairs to discuss your friends’ names (Ex 11). Then have some pairs role play their con versation for the class to share their stories.Step 8 PracticeDeal with Ex 4 on page 54.Show the phrases in Ex 4 on the PowerPoint and ask students to read them together. Then ask students to explain their meanings. Make sure every student is clear about these phrases. Students are given eight minutes to finish the exercise. Eight minutes later, check the answers with the whole class.
