I think thirty dollars per month is no small amount of money for a student. To be honest, I don’t need to use a cell phone because I don’t have any urgent business, but all my family and friends have cell phones. More than fifty percent of the population in Korea(韩国)has a cell phone. Think about that number: only children and very old people don’t have one.If I didn’t have a cell phone, everybody would raise such a question, “Why doesn’t she have one?” I would be considered as a strange and independent person. I don’t want to be strange, so I cannot do anything but use a cell phone.I have to check my cell phone all the time, and I have to change the battery every other day. It is kind of a big problem. Even though I don’t want to answer the phone at all, I have to answer it because as long as I have a cell phone, a quick answer is etiquette(礼节). It has really invaded(影响)my life.

You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. In giving a business presentation, many speakers think that if their idea is strong, their audience will get it readily. They feel discouraged when the audience is unable to understand their presentations. That happens a lot especially when technical experts are invited to make a product presentation to a group of users. What can we do to make a business presentation easier to understand? In my view, good presentations have always been simple and visual. In an effective business presentation, the fewer the points, the better the message gets passed on. You focus onthe depth of coverage instead of the width (广度) of coverage. Additionally, you make your ideas visual and relevant, so the message is understood better and remembered longer. Great business presenters relate their ideas and concepts to their audience by using simple, powerful diagrams instead of relying on text-based slides. In fact, drawing diagrams forces a presenter to make the idea clear even at the preparation stage. It is impossible to draw a diagram when you are not clear about an idea. When your idea is clear, it is easier to transfer it. Most audiences understand a diagram faster and remember it longer. This possibly explains why most of the memorable presentations have been visual in nature.36、Many speakers believe that the stronger their idea, ______.A.the more powerful their speech will beB.the more meaningful their speech will beC.the more easily the audience will understand itD.the harder the audience will find it to follow37、Why are you advised to give fewer points in your presentation?A.T o pass on the messages better.B.To avoid wasting too much time.C.T o allow audience to take notes.D.To leave more time for questions.38、The speaker can help the audience remember the message longer by ______.A.displaying text-based slidesB.avoiding long technical termsC.focusing on the width of coverageD.using simple and powerful diagrams39、The underlined word "transfer" in this passage most probably means "______".A.create B.pass on C.take off D.describe40、This passage is mainly about ______.A.how to make an effective business presentationB.how to present strong ideas in a presentationC.how to focus on the depth of coverageD.how to prepare a powerful diagramTask 2Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 to 45.Blue Jeans Company was established in October 2012 and operates as a partnership (合伙企业) between Elena Horowitz and James Foster. He has been with the General Electric Company (GE) since 1960. Having taken GE with a market value of about $12 billion, Jack Welch turned it into one of the largest and most admired companies in the world, with a market value of about $500 billion, when he stepped down as its CEO 20 years later, in 2000.As Jack Welch wrote in a letter to shareholders: “In the old culture, managers got their power from secret knowledge: profit margins, market share, and all that... In the new economy, the role of the leader is to express a vision, and put it into practice. That calls for open, caring relations with every employee, and face-to-face communication. People who can’t convincingly (有说服力的) express a vision won’t be successful. But those who can will become even more open-because success builds up self-confidence.”Welch believed that great business leaders have to:·possess large amounts of energy, and·know how to use that energy to motivate others.Welch moves from meeting to meeting, conveying that message-and many more others as well, some of which have become his trademarks:·Business is simple.·Don’t make it complicated.·Face reality.·Don’t be afraid of change.·Use the brains of your workers.31. The Human Resources Department recently surveyed the employees. They are wasting nearly two hours per day. Here are my ideas to reduce this waste. First we need to agree on what are the Most important behaviors to stop. For example, look at activity No.1 in the table below. Many people are doing this; however, it is the most difficult to stop. I recommend that we focus on activities No. 2, 4, and 5.Making phone calls shows the largest difference between men and women. Women do this much more than men. We should ask all employees to limit these calls. They should return non-urgent messages at their lunch break. For No. 4, we should focus on the younger age group. We will tell them that we are going to check their work accounts for personal messages. For No. 5, we can ask managers to watch this more carefully. Perhaps activity No. 3 should continue. This allows employees to know each other and it can increase their motivation. The managers will know if someone is spending too much time talking and not enough time working. Are you available tomorrow? I’d like to meet with you to discuss our next step.36. What problem does the writer find from the survey by the Human Resources Department?A. Working conditions are to be improved.B. Some employees need re-training.C. Employees lack motivation.D. Much work time is wasted.37. The greatest difference between men and women in the non-work-related activities is ______.A. taking long breaksB. making phone callsC. talking with colleaguesD. sending non-urgent messages38. Why does the writer suggest that activity No.3 should continue?A. It can help employees increase motivation.B. It can help managers to check on the work accounts.C. It can show how much time employees actually work.D. It can encourage young employees to work more efficiently.Passage 3The key to any successful garage sale (家庭旧物出售) is to get the word out. The best means of advertising your sale is to place an ad in the local newspaper. If you have a city and neighborhood paper, make sure you advertise in both. The ad should be large enough that it stands out. It should also include information on where the sale is located with directions, the "hot" items you're selling and the time the sale will start and end. An ad should be placed at least two days before the sale and run until the day of your event. That way people can plan their route (路线) to the sale in advance.Signs are another great way to inform your community. Post them in places where people gather, such as stores and community centers. Some businesses have a central bulletin board (布告栏), which is the best place to advertise. Other places to post are at the localcollege or university campus. This is especially helpful if your sale is happening in August or early September when students have returned to school and are looking for cheap finds.Post signs around your neighborhood. Y ou should also place both ads and direction signs, especially if you're located on a sidestreet without a major presence. Signs will attract and direct people. Just make sure you print in bold letters and use large directionsigns so people can read the information from the front seat of their car.41. The best way of getting out the news of your garage sale is to ______.A. publish the news onlineB. visit people door-to-doorC. advertise in the local newspaperD. make phone calls to your neighbors42.Y ou should place an ad at least two days before the sale so that people can ______.A. get enough cash for the saleB. compare prices of the itemsC. select the items they will buyD. decide on their route in advance43.Why should signs be posted in a community center?A. Schools are nearby.B. There are many stores.C. Students often meet there.D. More people gather there.44.What advice is given for printing the signs according to the last paragraph?A. Colored signs are preferred.B. Bold letters should be used.C. Large pictures should be included.D. Phone numbers should be provided.45.The best title for the passage might be ______.A. Advertising Garage SalesB. Advantages of Garage SalesC. Importance of Garage SalesD. Printing Ads for Garage SalesPassage 4Borrowing to start a business is not easy. Getting a bank loan, particularly for a new small business, is like going through the eye of a needle.Banks favor established business people with a solid credit rating and a large bank account. They should also have experience in the business they propose to enter, and offer well-prepared businessplans that show the ability to repay the loans. If you are not such a person, then you need to double your preparations to convince the banker to lend you that much needed start-up capital. If your business is new and small, bankers will need to know as much as possible about you and your business. However, many small business owners often make the mistake of not being well prepared when going to the bank to apply for the loan.Surprisingly, many loan applicants don't even have the slightest idea how or when they intend to repay the money they request. Often they don't even know how much money they need. When asked how much money they want to borrow, many people give these two common responses: "How much money can I get?" and "As much as possible." Is it any wonder that lenders say no?So the most important thing is do your homework before you ask for a loan.46. By saying "Getting a bank loan.., is like going through the eye of a needle", the writer emphasizes ______.A. the ability to borrow from a bankB. the importance of borrowing moneyC. the difficulty of getting a bank loanD. the start-up of a new small business47 Banks prefer to give a loan to those who ______.A. are in need of start-up capitalB. have the ability to pay it backC. own an old and large businessD. haven't borrowed money before48. What will bankers do before they give a loan to a new and small business?A. Help fill out a special form for getting a loan.B. Request the business to pay a small deposit.C. Get enough information about the business.D. Estimate the size of the loan they will give.49. Some small businesses fail to get a bank loan because ______.A. the form they fill in is incompleteB. their products are not technically advancedC. the amount of money they want to borrow is too bigD. they have no clear idea of how much they need to borrow50. The writer advises that before applying for a bank loan, the applicant should ______.A. thoroughly prepareB. do some market researchC. learn a lot about the bankD. know the upper limit of the loanPart IV Translation (2%×5 = 10%)Directions: Please translate the following sentences . But, in spite of its beautiful buildings and busy atmosphere, it has also earned the reputation for being a slightly cold and austere place. When people think of Cambridge, they think of great minds immersed in serious study and not the lighter things in life, like having a good time. But perhaps the real reason for Cambridge’s reputation for coolness is its position. It is located in the flat country of the East Anglia region, about 80 km north of London, and there is not much to shelter the city from cold winter winds that are said to blow in from Siberia. There is not a great deal Cambridge can do about its climate, but in recent years a lot has been done to make the city a more modern and exciting place to live and study in. Today visitors and language learners will find much more to do than just seeing beautiful ancient architecture. One reason for the change is the fact that the city is now much more than simply a place of learning. In recent decades, it has become a centre for new hi-tech(高技术)industries and the success of these companies has created new jobs and attracted more professional people to the city.“There’s been a dramatic increase in the number of hi-tech firms in the city,” observes one resident. “Many have been set up by university graduates. With the boom in computing, telecommunications and biotechnology, they’ve done very well. Many graduates have become millionaires several times over.”As a result, now shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs have opened to meet the growing demand. Whereas once the choice of places to get an evening meal was limited, now diners can find restaurants serving up food from all over the world.21. It can be inferred from the passage that ____D_______.A. the commercial prosperity in Cambridge is due to the flourish of hi-tech companiesB. Cambridge attracts more professional people to work in the city because of its highacademic standardsC. visitors find it difficult to find any places for entertainment in CambridgeD. many university students began to establish their own companies22. What does the word “austere” in Line 3 probably mean? AA. Self-disciplined.B. Friendly.C. Strange.D. Interesting.23. Cambridge’s reputation for coolness is most probably owing to its ___C_______.A. traditionB. educationC. locationD. academy achievement24. Many things have greatly increased in Cambridge EXCEPT _____B____.A. hi-tech firmsB. restaurants B. job opportunities D. modern buildings25. What is the passage mainly about? BA. Cambridge has become the centre of hi-tech industries in Britain.B. Great changes have taken place in Cambridge.C. Traditional college life has changed into a modern and lighter style.D. The brief introduction of Cambridge University.Passage2Life on earth depends on water, and there is no substitute for it. The current assumption is that our basic needs for water---whether for drinking, agriculture, industry or the raising of fish---will always have to be met. Given that premise (鉴于此), there are two basic routes we can go: more equitable access to water or more drastic (激烈的) engineering solutions (more dams, for instance, or massive shifts of water from Canada to the southwestern United States).Look at the engineering solution first. A lot of my research concentrates on what happens to wetlands when you build dams in river basins, particularly in Africa. The ecology(生态的)of such areas is almost entirely driven by the seasonal change of the river---the pulse of the water. And the face is that if you build a dam, you generally wreck(破坏)the downstream ecology. The engineers’ ability to control water flows has created new kinds of unpredictability, too. Dams in Africa have meant fewer fish, less grazing(放牧)and less floodplain(涝原)agriculture---none of which were anticipated. This brings us to the key issue in any discussion of water: money. To talk about a water crisis glosses over(掩饰)tough problems such as poverty. In the 21st century every household in Britain will have a water meter, and we will pay for what we use just as we do for gas or electricity. And a similar system will eventually be adopted across Europe and the US. But consider the problems of water supply in Mexico City or Delhi. If you’re rich, you drink mineral water and may even have a swimming pool---yet millions in such cities can’t get safe drinking water. People talk about the coming water crisis. I believe we have one now. It is a water crisis for the poor.26. The building of a dam may ______C____.A. solve the problem of water supplyB. help to keep more waterC. badly influence the downstream people and their surroundingsD. meet people’s needs for water27. In Africa, controlling water flows by dams has caused the reduction in all the following except_____D_____.A. the kinds of fishB. the area of grasslandC. the amount of agricultureD. the transportation of goods and people28. What’s the passage mainly concerned about? BA. The shortage of water.B. The supply of water.C. The value of water.D. The importance of water.29. The words “equitable access to” (Para.1) most probably mean____A____.A. equal advantage ofB. proper use ofC. possible solution toD. complete devotion to30. There may be many more problems about water in ___D_____.A. Europe and AfricaB. Europe and North AmericaC. Britain and IndiaD. Mexico City and DelhiPassage 3Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “you’ve got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20 year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer(自由撰稿人), I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering, what if? I would keep putting my dream to the test---even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadow land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.31. The passage is meant to ______A____.A.warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experienceB.advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writerC.show young people it’s unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fameD.encourage young people to pursue a writing career32. What can be concluded from the passage? DA. Genuine writers often find their work interesting and rewarding.B.A writer’s success depends on luck rather than on effort.C.Famous writers usually live in poverty and isolation.D.The chances for a writer to become successful are small.33. Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing career? BA. He wasn’t able to produce a single book.B.He hadn’t seen a change for the better.C.He wasn’t able to have a rest for a whole year.D.He found his dream would never come true.34. “…people who die wondering, what if?”(Line 3, Para.3) refers to “those____B____.”A. who think too much of the dark side of lifeB.who regret giving up their career halfwayC.who think a lot without making a decisionD.who are full of imagination even upon death35. “shadowland” in the last sentence refers to _____C____.A. the wonderland one often dreams aboutB.the bright future that one is looking forward toC.the state of uncertainty before one’s final goal is reachedD.a world that exists only in one’s imaginationPassage4Professor Smith recently persuaded 35 people, 23 of them women, to keep a diary of all theirabsent-minded actions for a fortnight. When he came to analyze their embarrassing lapses(差错)in a scientific report, he was surprised to find that nearly all of them fell into a few groupings. Nor did the lapses appear to be entirely random(随机的).One of the women, for instance, on leaving her house for work one morning threw her dog her earrings and tried to fix a dog biscuit on her ear. “the explanation for this is that the brain is like a computer,” explains the professor. “people program themselves to do certain activities regularly. It was the woman’s custom every morning to throw her dog two biscuits and then put on her earrings. But somehow the action got reversed in the program.” About one in twenty of the incidents the volunteers reported were these “program assembly failures”.Altogether the volunteers logged 433 unintentional actions that they found themselves doing---an average of twelve each. There appear to be peak periods in the day when we are at our zaniest(荒谬可笑的). These are two hours some time between eight a.m. and noon, between four and six p.m. with a smaller peak between eight and ten p.m.” among men the peak seems to be when a changeover in brain’ programs’ occurs, as for instance between going to and from work. “women on average reported slightly more lapses---12.5 compared with 10.9 for men---probably because they were more reliable reporters.A startling finding of the research is that the absent-minded activity is a hazard of doing things in which we are skilled. Normally, you would expect that skill reduces the number of errors we make. But trying to avoid silly slips by concentrating more could make thins a lot worse---even dangerous.36. In his study Professor Smith asked the subjects_____D_____.A. to keep track of people who tend to forget thingsB. to report their embarrassing lapses at randomC. to analyze their awkward experiences scientificallyD. to keep a record of what they did unintentionally37. Professor Smith discovered that _____A_____.A. certain patterns can be identified in the recorded incidentsB. many people were too embarrassed to admit their absent-mindednessC. men tend to be more absent-minded than womenD. absent-mindedness is an excusable human weakness38. “Program assembly failures”(Line 6,Para.2) refers to the phenomenon that people ___C_____.A. often fail to program their routines beforehandB. tend to make mistakes when they are in a hurryC. unconsciously change the sequence of doing thingsD. are likely to mess things up if they are too tired39. We learn from the third paragraph that ___A_______.A. absent-mindedness tends to occur during certain hours of the dayB. women are very careful to perform actions during peak periodsC. women experience more peak periods of absent-mindednessD. men’s absent-mindedness often results in funny situations40. It can be concluded from the passage that ____C_____.A. people should avoid doing important things during peak periods of lapsesB. hazards can be avoided when people do things they are good atC. people should be careful when programming their actionsD. lapses cannot always be attributed to lack of concentrationPart III Cloze (10*1=10 points)Suppose that you and nine of your friends belong 41A a bicycle club and that one of the bikes is destroyed in an 42.C The person 43C bike is destroyed has to buy a new bike in order to continue to participate 44B the activities of the club. Unfortunately, the 45D of a new bike is $100 —which is more than that person or any other club member can 46B . As a result, the club loses one member.Imagine, however, that all club members had agreed earlier to share equally in any loss that might 47D In this case, each of you would have to pay only $10 to cover the cost of the new bike and neither you 48C your friends would suffer a financial loss of more than $10. 范文: Cheating on Exam With the development of the society, people pay more and more attention to education. As a result, thousands of students take part in various examinations. However, some students have been found cheating on their exams. Some of them copy from each others, some took out their textbooks or reference books to copy, some copied from small pieces of paper on which they had prepared for the exam, still some used the modern communication tools such as BP, mobile phone as a way to cheat on exams. Then, what’s the effect of cheating on exam? There are three factors for this. First, it results in an unfair competition and will destroy the creativity of those bright students. Second, it will ruin the students’ self -confidence in the long run. Third, under that kind of circumstances, the students graduated from the schools will not be the one who can meet the need of the society. However, how to stop cheating on exam? In my opinion, there are two ways we can adopt. First, a severe punishment should be put into effect to prevent students from cheating. Second, great effort should be made to make students understand what kind of person the society needs and try to improve their self-confidence. Part II Listening Comprehension(35 points) 本题为听力理解,共三部分。
