AA simple project to help a family in need stopped Luke Mickelson in his tracks. In 2012, he and his family were inspired to build and donate a bunk bed, one bed on top of the other, after learning there were local children who slept on the floor. Shocked to discover how widespread this need was in his community, Mickelson founded Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit that builds and delivers beds to children in need.Born and raised in Idaho, Mickelson, now 41, had a thriving career. He coached his kids’ sports teams and fished in the nearby river. But when he met children who were sleeping on the floor, his peaceful life changed course.U sing safety guidelines and his daughter’s bunk bed as a model, Mickelson started buying wood and supplies to build beds with his own money. He recruited friends and family members to help around the holidays. As the word spread, interest and involvement from his and other communities flooded—along with Mickelson’s bunk bed output. “That first project, we built 11 bunk beds in my garage,” he said. “The next year, we did 15. Then it doubled every year. In 2017, we built 612 bunk beds.”With the motto “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town”, the nonprofit and its more than 65 branches have built and delivered more than 1,500 free beds to children across America. But along with the rapid growth, Mickelson was faced with a tough choice: advancing his career or his nonprofit. He chose the latter and went from making “great money to zero money”. He’s never looked back. “I found that the need I have isn’t financial,” he said. “The need I have is seeing the joy on kids’ faces, knowing that I can make a difference.”1.Why did Mickelson set up Sleep in Heavenly Peace?A.To help the poor children.B.To make a big fortune.C.To inspire his community.D.To get more donations.2.What do we know about Luke Mickelson?A.He had his own fish farm.B.He changed his career from time to time.C.He used to sleep on the floor when he was a kid.D.He originally had a relaxing and pleasant life.3.What is Mickelson’s attitude to the nonprofit?A.Ambiguous.B.Defensive.C.Cautious. Experts believe the fish first appe ared during the Early Cretaceous period more than 100 millio n years ago.Randy Sauer is an Illinois state fisheries biologist. He say s the fish disappeared from the state's rivers in the 1990s, al though they have continued to do well in southern states. Sa uer says biologists want to bring the fish back to northern river s "because it is important to have top predators (捕食者)to balance the species below them," he said.Sport fishermen like to try to catch the alligator gar. Alligat or gar are the second﹣largest freshwater fish in North America. They can grow as l arge as 2,7 meters and weigh more than 136 kilograms. Sauer says th eir large size is one reason they disappeared in the 1990s.Experts say alligator gars are "opportunistic feeders." This means they will eat almost anything ﹣ including small turtles or ducks. They also eat invasive species such as Asian silvercarp. Sauer hopes the reintroduction of the alligator gar will help the state's efforts to control the carp. Because alligator gar can live up to 60 years, the program will continue to incr ease for many years.Sauer notes that female alligator gars do "not sexually mat ure until 11 years, and the male not till 6 or 7 years" That me ans the biologists will try to raise and release a lot offish early in the program to reintroduce them. " "We're probably going to stock (储备)more heavily than 10 or 20 years down the road when hopeful ly these fish will find each other and start doing the job on thei r own."Sauer says.Small devices have been placed in 7,000 of the fish so they can be observed after they are release d into the waterways of Illinois. As it rains and floods, biolo gists expect some of the fish will follow the rivers into the stat es of Louisiana and Texas.(8)Why people call the alligator gar "living fossil"?A.They have existed for over 100 million years.B.They can grow up to 136 kilograms.C.Their fossil can be found on earth.D.They can grow up to 2.7 meters.(9)Biologists will reintroduce the alligator gar to northern rivers in order to ____ .A.increase the number of the alligar garB. help people make more moneyC. help to protect the environmentD. keep the species' balance(10)According to Randy Sauer, alligar gar died out in northern ri vers because _____ .A.they ate almost anythingB.they were very huge in sizeC.the rivers were polluted thenD.they were caught by sport fishermen(11)What can we learn from the underlined statement?A.10 or 20 years will be needed to find these fish.B.It will be decades before these fish produce young.C.There is a long way to go before the fish find each other D.These fish can find each other themselves along the wate rways.DIf you're DIY﹣minded, you can build your own solar power system. In so me cases, you can even build your own solar panels (电池板), although the amount that you can effectively DIY hom e solar depends on how much you want to power. Making y our own solar panel is a time﹣consuming process and requires some electrical skills. How ever, it can also be very rewarding﹣learning to build your own panel is a great way to understand how solar electricity is generated. Before you can build your own solar panels, you first nee d to understand how solar cells generate electricity. Once yo u've bought individual solar cells (they can be purchased onl ine), the basic process for building your own solar panel go es like this: Prepare the backing for your panel. Many DIY solar panel builders prefer to use a wooden board as the base for their solar cell. You'll need to drill holes in the board so t hat the wires for each cell can pass through. Wire your solar cells together. This requires some experience with electrical work. Use a soldering iron (烙铁) to attach wire to the solar cells and then link each of thecells together. Attach cells to your backing. If possible, at tach each solar cell to the backing individually. This makes it easier to substitute (替换) a single cell in the event that becomes damaged or is no t operating properly. At this point you have a functional solar panel that can prod uce electricity when the sun shines. However, a solar pane l by itself is not useful. If you are trying to generate electricity to power devices in your home, you need to pair your panel with an inverter (换流器) that will turn direct current (DC) power from the sun in to the alternating current (AC) power used in most modern electronic devices.(12)What does the author think of building DIY solar panel in the fi rst paragraph?A. It is easyB. It is necessaryC. It is commonD. It is worthwhile(13)What's the first step of building your own solar panels?A. Master the advanced knowledge of management.B. Buy individual solar cells.C. Prepare the backing for your panel.D. Drill holes in the wooden board.(14)Why are solar cells connected to the wooden board separatel y?A. To produce more power.B. To replace damaged cells easily.C. To attach cells to the backing tightly.D. To pass through the wooden board easily.(15)What can be inferred from the text?A. People with electrical skills have advantages over those without in DIY solar panels.B. A functional solar panel can give power to your home dev ices directly.C. How to pair an inverter depends on how much you want t o power.D. a wooden board is a must for your own solar panels第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.AIf you are a human, you can't help but experience times when everything seems to be going wrong and you feel as if your life is pletely out of control. It is during those “low times”that words of encouragement from family, friends, co-workers or even strangers can lighten your spirits. It is also during those times that destructive words can sink deeper and deeper into depression. For example, consider this story about a group of frogs who were traveling through the woods when two of them fell into a deep pit (深坑). All of the other frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep the pit was, they told the two unfortunate frogs they would never get out.The two frogs ignored the ments and tried to jump out of the pit. The other frogs kept telling them to stop. Finally, one of the two frogs took heed of what the other frogs were saying and simply gave up. He fell down and died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again the crowd of frogs shouted at him to stop the pain. The more they shouted, the harder he jumped and finally he made it to safety. When he got out, the other frogs asked him why he continued to jump when they were all shouting at him to simply quit. The frog explained to them that he was a little bit deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time.Every time you have a chance to say either something positive or negative to another human being, do choose the chance to say something positive! Don't let those opportunities get away from you. Your words have a large amount of power. Use them wisely. You really never know just how much they can mean to someone else.54.The first paragraph tells us that words play an important part especially when_______.A. we stay with our family, friends and co-workersB. we hear strangers say something to usC. we get through hard times in lifeD. we make some big mistakes55. The underlined phrase “took heed of” has the similar meaning with_______.A. acted according toB. had some doubtC. held on toD. got used to56.The more they shouted, the harder he jumped and finally he made it to safety. That’s because__________________.A. he struggled to prove that they were wrongB. he thought they were encouraging himC. he was angry with what they saidD. he didn’t want to let them down57. After reading the passage, readers should learn a lesson that____________.A. we can use encouraging words to help others outB. having a positive attitude is important in lifeC. never give up until we winD. we must believe in ourselves rather than othersBSome people don’t mind being fat. Other people can keep slim without any effort. But a lot of people do put on weight and don’t like it. The question is, what can they do about it?Some believe exercise can be helpful. But the trouble is that it only makes you want to eat more. You might sweat out a couple of pounds playing tennis or climbing a mountain, but you put it all back on again with a big steak or bread and jam.A helpful way is food choosing. But what sort of food should you choose? Some believe that the less they eat, the slimmer they will be. They don’t eat anything until they bee weak with hunger. Some stick to milk and bananas. You’ll find you need a lot of bananas, and unless you live where they grow, they aren’t cheap. Another says that if you eat things like hard-boiled eggs, and apples with their skins on which are hard for your stomach to digest , the more you eat, the thinner you get. This is because you use up the fat in your body to get the energy to digest the food. For most of us these methods are too extreme. The simplest way is just to cut down on the carbohydrate, which means not eating bread, potatoes, cakes, sugar, rice, and so on and eating anything else you like. It’s straight forward and often quite effective.Still others like to be more scientific. They get a table, which tells them that, for example, 100 grams of roast leg of lamb gives you 330 calories and a 50 gram helping of pudding gives you 130 calories.58. There seems nothing wrong with exercise except that ______.A.it makes you sweat B.it’s hard work C.it tires you out D.it makes you eat more 59. According to the passage, the best way to keep slim is ______.A.exercising B.hunger C.food-choosing D.eating milk and bananas60. The practical method suggested here means ______.A.sticking to bananas B.not eating many carbohydratesC.eating as little as possible D.eating things that are hard to digest61. Which of the following do you think is the best title for the passage?A.Don’t Eat Too Much B.Various Ways of Losing WeightC.Ways to Keep Fit D.Food and HealthVI. Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or plete the statements in the fewest possible words.Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict,” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled.” Today David wears casual clothes-khaki pants and sports shirt-to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I’m working harder than ever,” David says, “and I need to feel fortable.”More and more panies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many panies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday”of “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really bee an everyday thing.” said business consultant Maisly Jones. Why have so many panies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a pany to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software pany, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing fortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and pany, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale. Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them savemoney. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”62. Why did David Smith refer to himself as “a clothes addict,”?_______________________________________________________________________________63. David Smith wears casual clothes now, because _____________________________________64. The majority of the employees said casual dress_____________________________________65. Then one evening in June last year, she received a text message telling her she was out of work. “The first two weeks were the most difficult to live through,” she said. “After everything I’d done for the pany, they dismissed me by text! I was so angry and I just didn’t feel like l ooking for another job. I hated everything about the city and my life.”Then, Zoe received an invitation from an old school friend, Kathy, to e and stay. Kathy and her husband, Huw, had just bought a farm in north-west Wales. Zoe jumped at the chance to spend a weekend away from London, and now, ten months later, she is still on the farm.“The moment I arrived at Kathy’s farm, I loved it and I knew I wanted to stay,” said Zoe. “Everything about my past life suddenly seemed meaningless.”Zoe has been working on the farm since October of last year and says she has no regrets. “It’s a hard life, physically very tiring,” she says. “In London I was stressed and often mentallyexhausted. But this is a good, healthy tiredness. Here, all I need to put me in a good mood is a hot bath and one of Kathy’s wonderful dinners.”Zoe says she has never felt bored on the farm. Every day brings a new experience. Kathy has been teaching her how to ride a horse and she has learnt to drive a tractor. The findings, the first in a series of reports from NatWest that has started a five-year research project into teenagers and money, arc particularly worrying as this generation of young people is likely to be burdened with greater debts than any before.University tuition fees are currently capped at £3,000 annually, but this will be reviewed next year and the Government is under enormous pressure to raise the ceiling. In the research, the teenagers were presented with the terms of four different loans but 76 per cent failed to identify the cheapest. The young people also predicted that they would be earning onaverage £31,000 by the age of 25, although the average salary for those aged 22 to 29 is just £ 17,815. The teenagers expected to be in debt when they finished university or training, although half said that they assumed the debts would be less than £ 10,000. Average debts for graduates are £ 12,363.Stephen Moir, head of munity investment at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group which owns NatWest, said. “The more exposed young people are to financial issues, and the younger they bee aware of them, the more likely they arc to bee responsible, forward-planning adults who manage their finances confidently and effectively.”Ministers are deeply concerned about the financial pressures on teenagers and young people because of student loans and rising housing costs. They have just introduced new lessons in how to manage debts. Nikki Fairweather, aged 15, from St Helens, said that she had benefited from lessons on personal finance, but admitted that she still had a lot to learn about money.93. Which of the following can be found from the five-year research project?A. Students understand personal finances differently.B. University tuition fees in England have been rising.C. According to Stephen Moir, students____________.A. are too young to be exposed 10 financial issuesB. should learn to manage their finances wellC. should maintain a positive attitude when facing loansD. benefit a lot from lessons on personal finance96. What can we learn from the passage?A. Many British teenagers do not know money matters well.B. Teenagers in Britain are heavily burdened with debts.C. Financial planning is a required course at college.D. Young people should bee responsible adults.(D)The world economy has run into a brick wall. Despite countless warnings in recent years about the need to address a potential hunger crisis in poor countries and an energy crisis worldwide, world leaders failed to think ahead. The result is a global food crisis. Wheat, corn and rice prices have more than doubled in the past two years. And oil prices have increased more than three times since the start of xx. These food-price increases, bined with increasing energy costs, will slow if not stop economic growth in many parts of the world and will even affect political stability. Practical solu tions to these problems do exist, but we’ll have to start thinking ahead and acting globally. Here are three steps to ease the current food crisis and avoid the potential for a global crisis. The first is to promote the dramatic success of Malawi, a country in southern Africa, which three years ago established a special fund to help its farmers get fertilizer and seeds with high productivity. Malawi’s harvest doubled after just one year. An international fund based on the Malawi model would cost a mere $10 per person annually in the rich world, or $10 billion altogether.Second, the U.S. and Europe should abandon their policies of paying partly for the change of food into biofuels. The U.S. government gives farmers a taxpayer-financed payment of 51 cents per gallon of ethanol (乙醇)changed from corn. There may be a case for biofuels produced on lands that do not produce foods — tree crops, grasses and wood products — but there's no case for the government to pay to put the world’s dinner into the gas tank.Third, we urgently need to weather-proof die world's crops as soon and as effectively as possible. For a poor farmer, sometimes something as simple as a farm pond —which collects rainwater to be used in dry weather —can make the difference between a good harvest and a bad one. The world has already mitted to establishing a Climate Adaptation hind to help poor regions climate-proof vital economic activities such as food production and health care but has not yet acted upon the promise.97. An international fund based on the Malawi model would__________.A. cost each of the developed countries $10 billion per yearB. aim to double the harvest in southern African countries in a yearC. decrease the food prices as well as the energy pricesD. give poor farmers access to fertilizer and highly productive seeds98. With the second step, the author expresses the idea that_________.A. it is not wise to change food crops into gasB. it is misleading to put tree crops into the gas tankC. we should get alternative forms of fuel in any wayD. biofuels should be developed on a large scale99. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. A rain-collecting pond is a simple safeguard against dry weather.B. A Climate Adaptation Fund has been established to help poor regions.C. The world has made a serious promise to build farm ponds.D. It makes a great difference whether we develop wood products or not.100. In the passage, the author calls on us to_________.A. slow down but not to stop economic growthB. develop tree crops, grasses and wood productsC. achieve economic growth and political stabilityD. act now so as to relieve the global food shortagePaper TwoI. We may read this article on a .A. websiteB. magazineC. bookletD. story bookBAs each semester begins, my colleague greets his students wearing a jacket and tie.“You make only one first impression,” he says. So while the rest of the semester he teaches class in his usual, more casual clothes, the first week he presents a different image. His thought is that students will remember their first meet positively and more readily think highly of him as the semester goes on because that favorable first impression has an influence on them. The sequence (顺序) that we meet matters in how we judge subsequent (后来的) information. The big influence of first impressions is related to the halo effect, where the perception (看法) of positive qualities in one thing or part gives rise to the perception of similar qualities in related things or in the whole. Here is an example: You meet a friendly person at a party and later are asked to collect money for a worthy cause. You call that person because you think she will make a contribution. In reality, there is no connection between being pleasant and being generous. Yet the halo effect leads you to think that the two are related. The halo effect is powerful, but it is questionable whether it matters much in long-term relationships, such as that between teacher and student. While dressing up may make students think the teacher must know his subject matter because he creates a professional first impression, the effect wears thin if the person turns out to be a poor teacher after all.First impressions matter but they don’t ha ve the final word. Facts speak louder. If you had never seen or heard of Einstein, the first time you saw him your impression would most likely be negative. Now his face is connected with genius (天才), not madness because he is the person who has e to define what genius is.The problem is that few of us are Einsteins and we often don’t get the chance to change a negative first impression.4. The author explains the halo effect mainly by _____.A. giving an exampleB. making a parisonC. setting down general rulesD. following the order of importance5. In the author’s eyes, the halo effect _____.A. is surprisingly powerfulB. matters more in the long runC. may affect our judgment of othersD. makes some teachers irresponsible6. The author uses the example of Einstein to show the importance of _____.A. appearanceB. truthC. impressionsD. fairness7. The author seems to advise readers _____.A. to mind their first impressionsB. not to judge a book by its coverC. not to follow others’ judgmentsD. to pay no attention to the halo effectCOne day in the gym, I asked a coach, “What’s the difference between the bestathletes and everyone else?” He briefly mentioned the things that you might expect:genetics, luck, talent. But then he added something I wasn’t expecting. “At some point,” he said, “it es down to who can handle the boredom of training every day and doing the same practice over and over again.”Most of the time people talk about getting motivated(有动机的,有积极性的) to work on their goals. As a result, I think many people get depressed when they lose focus or motivation because they think that successful people never lack motivation that they seem to be missing. But that’s exac tly the opposite of what this coach was saying. When I was an athlete, I loved going to practice the week after a big win. Who wouldn’t? Your coach is happy, your teammates are excited, and you feel like you can beat anyone. As an entrepreneur(企业家), I love working when customers are rolling in and things are going well. Getting results has a way of pushing you forward. But what about when you’re bored? What about when the work isn’t easy? What about when it feels like nobody is paying attention or you’re not getting the results you want? It’s the ability to work when work isn’t easy that makes the difference. If you look at the people who are consistently achieving their goals, you start to realize that it’s not the events or the results that make them different. It’s their mitment to the process. They fall in love with the daily practice. So, fall in love with boredom. Fall in love with repetition(重复) and practice. Fall in love with the process of what you do and let the results take care of themselves.8.Wha t was the author’s attitude towards the coach’s added answer?A. He doubted it.B. He argued against it.C. He was surprised at it.D. He was uninterestedin it.9.The coach supposes successful people _____________________.A. can avoid negative emotions.B. can keep themselves inspiredC. have a real enthusiasm for their workD. will find ways to work through boredom.10.The author mentions his own experience to show ________.A. the way of being successful.B. the importance of getting results.C. the willingness to work hard when you feel motivatedD. the difficulty in keeping working when you are bored.11.The text inspires people to _____________.A. value motivation.B. live with repetition.C. set themselves goals.D. develop a good habit.DCould your cellphone give you cancer? Whether it could or not, some people are worrying about the possibility that phones, power lines and wi-fi could be responsible for a range of illnesses, from rashes to brain tumors. Some say there is evidence to support the growing anxieties. David Carpenter, a professor of environmental health sciences at the university at Albany, in New York, thinks there’s a greater than 95 percent chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia (白血病). Also there’s a greater than 90 percent chance that cellphones can cause brain tumors. “It’s apparent now that there’s a real risk,”said Carpenter. But others believe these concerns are unjustified(没有正当理由的). Dr Martha Linet, the head of radiation epidemiology(流行病学) at the US National Cancer Institute, has looked at the same research as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion. “I don’t support warning labels for cellphones, ” said Linet. “We don’t have the evidence that there’s much danger. ”Studies so far suggest a weak connection between EMFs (电磁场) and illness —so weak that it might not exist at all. A multinational investigation of cellphones and brain cancer, in 13 countries outside the US, has been underway for several years. It’s funded in part by the European Union, in part by a cellphone industry group. The final report should e out later this year, but data so far don’t suggest a strong link between cellphone use and cancer risk.12.From the passage we can learn that some people are worried because _______.A. they have evidence that the use of cellphones can lead to cancerB. they make a fuss over(对...大惊小怪) cellphone useC. some experts have given a warningD. cellphones are responsible for brain tumors13.By saying “I don’t support warning labels for cellphones,”Dr Martha Linet has the idea that _______.A. the worrying is unnecessaryB. cancer-warning labels should be on cellphonesC. there is a link between cellphones and cancerD. cellphones have nothing to do with cancer14.Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author towards the debate?A.
