The old literature in British is also called Anglo-Saxon literature. Because the English people think that they are the descendents of English-speaking Anglo, Saxon, and Jutes. They conquered the
native Celts and settled them in the island in fifth century, naming its central part Anglia or England.
As we all know, only one long poem is survived in old English literature, which was the song of Beowulf.
The song of Beowulf can be justly termed England’s national epic and its hero. Beowulf is one of the national heroes of the English people. But in this period, people lived freedom and happiness.
ⅡMedieval periods(1066---mid-14th century)
In the year 1066, at the battle of Hastings, the Normans headed by William, Duke of Normandy, defeated the Anglo-Saxons.
During this period, there were key advances in society, government, and religion.
For the literature, they also brought to England is remarkable for its bright, romantic tales of love and adventure, in marked contrast with the strength and somberness of Anglo-Saxon poetry.。
