Junyan KongJaala A. ThibaultLinguistic 3C; Section #4February 11, 2014Paper #2; “Economy/Class”-Draft #2The American Dream VS the Chinese DreamForty years ago, when Dr. Martin Luther King was shot, his words “I have a dream,” spread across the world. And nowadays, as generally understood, the American dream means the individual opportunity that exists in America. The dream is a national ethos of the United States, a set of ideals in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an upward social mobility for people, achieved through hard work in a society with few barriers. At the same time, in another country, president Xi Jinping indicated that the greatest Chinese dream is the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, during a speech at the National Museum’s exhibit. Many scholars and journalists have interpreted Mr. Xi’s words to mean that the Chinese dream is a collective vision, which contrasts with the American dream which is an individual one. However, in my point of view, both dreams have similar and different elements based on each nation’s unique circumstances. Different cultures have cultivated different values, beliefs, and different political cultures, which cannot be judged with a single meta-narrative (Li). In fact, their differences make it more possible for the American dream and the Chinese dream to coexist.A dream often starts from the pursuit of beautiful things and the desire for freedom from suffering. Because of differences in political systems, history and national strength, two dreams are also different. China is the one of the greatest developing countries in the world. 170 years ago, Japan launched massive aggression against China. Due to this aggression, Chinese people soon developed a strong awareness of saving the nation and ensuring its survival. What is more, China became a country with high self-esteem. And nowadays, the Chinese people are pursuing a national revival. As Wasserstrom said, “And he encourages the state media to promulgate the idea that the Chinese dream —a grand process of national resurgence that will return China to the position of global centrality it enjoyed before a century of humiliation at the hands of West, and Japan, between 1842 and 1949 — is about to be realized” (Wasserstrom). As a result, the Chinese dream is first of all a collective concept that a rich country and strong army are paramount. On the contrary, the American dream emerged in the Colonial Period. Many people immigrated to America for a better life. It has unique natural resources, geographical environment, and progressive ideas of equality and liberty. So the main dream for the nation is making sure people living in the country are rich and happy enough. For decades, the American dream has inspired individual creativity and positivity and has influenced the whole world a lot. What is more, the United States is also the richest and strongest country in the world. Also there are similarities between the Chinese dream and the American dream. The similarities lie in the common aspirations for a better life. While both dreams hope for success, the American dream stresses the spirit of freedom, social mobility and individual wealth but the Chinese dream pinpoints nation’ s prosperity, unity and stability. In 21st century, every country is in a critical historical period of the coexist of opportunities and challenges. Because of the growth of capitalism and globalization, all the countries connect to each other much better and have many opportunities for economic benefits. Also, the differences between culture and standard of living make every country face to the challenges of living qualities and country strength. It is true that capitalist ideology still holds a powerful influence over many people, like the American dream that if you work hard, you can raise your standard of living. Marche (269) says, “Work hard and stay late and you get to be a banker or doctor; drop out of high school or start using drugs and you’ll end up at McDonald’s.”But this idea is beginning to crack under the pressure of capitalism and the class system. As he says, “It is obvious that a class system has arrived in America – a recent study of the thirty- four countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development found that only Italy and Great Britain have less social mobility” (Marche 267). The American dream has now turned into a nightmare. While CEO salaries and corporate profits soar, workers are working harder and faster for less pay and benefits. Nowadays, the forces of inequality are simply too powerful and it has become the biggest challenge faced by the United States. As a developing country, China is facing much more challenges. Mr. Xi insists confidentially that the Chinese dream will satisfy not just his aspiration but those of “each Chinese person”. As Wasserstrom said, “However, it cannot hide the fact that China’s leaders continue to be plagued by nightmares not unlike those that haunted them in1989. Under Mr. Xi the party has carried out a fierce crackdown aimed at limiting dissent, often described the hardest since 1989.”It has also tightened control over the press and social media. What ismore, Mr. Xi saysthat the Chinese dream is to keep the economy growing. In the last three decades, china has lifted600million people out of poverty. To complete this, China has developed a lot of industries. As a result, the pollution strongly influenced people’s life nowadays. The air pollution, water pollution and some other pollution are all harmful to people’s health. As Wasserstrom said:Perhaps the most urgent fear is this: a sense among even those Chinese whose living standards have soared that frantic development has come at too high a price. Never in history have the promise and peril of head-spinning modernization been so apparent within the space of a single lifetime. Acountry where the authorities call the air in the capital “fine” on days when nearby skyscrapers are completely shrouded from view, where waterways are suddenly and inexplicably clogged by enormous numbers of pig carcasses, where once-revered elders live in rural poverty and isolation — this is the stuff of nightmares (Wasserstrom).I think it will take China much more time and money to deal with these problems. In addition, China and America are both facing some similar problems, especially some social issues like healthcare, education, housing and retirement. For example, healthcare is very important for both countries. They all need to pay more attention on keeping people away from suffering of diseases. In addition, both countries should ensure that everyone can receive high education. What is more, the high price of houses and the needs of the elderly for financial support during retirement are also big challenges for China and America to deal with. Last but not least, economic transformation, innovations, political reform and nation services are also main problems for all the countries in the world.I am an international student. So both the Chinese dream and the Americandream mean a lot to my family. I want to be an engineer when I finish my study in the college. As Chinese, I prefer contributing my talent to the nation’s prosperity than working for my own wealth. During my study abroad in America, I have found the United States an open country. The country provides the same opportunity to everyone in order to make people live a life with high quality. I think highly of the advantages of the American dream.Obviously, the Chinese dream is different from the American dreamand both countries are facing many challenges, but it does not necessarily lead to an inevitable clash between these two dreams or even these two states and cultures. It is inappropriate to argue over which dream is better. In my opinion, the whole world can benefit from these two dreams by accepting the essence and rejecting the slag.Work citedLi, Eric X,/talks/eric_x_li_a_tale_of_two_political_systems?language=zh-cn June 2013.Marche, Stephen. “We are not created equal.”America Now. 10th ed. American Dream and Chinese DreamToday I want to talk about American Dream and Chinese Dream. I think it has many different between American Dream and Chinese Dream. American Dream mains "Life should be better, richer and fuller, with opportunity for each one", Nowadays, people are looking toward a new American Dream with less focus on financial gain and more emphasis on living a simple, fulfilling life. I don't know what's the Chinese Dream in my impression .It is rich and powerful or rising? I think it is a very difficult questions but I believe everyone has a dream.“More and better, endless……”at first representative of this simple idea of American Dream .Later in the Declaration of Independence will be turned into a solemn statement :All men are created equal, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness "natural rights". “If we can dream it, we can go it.” Aluminum doors on the Florida space center, the Americans planted under this sentence. I seem to understand the differences of Chinese and Americans in the behavior and the concept. Also seems to understand why these two countries after nearly a century of struggle. Still often show do not give and do not understand with each for some reason. The Chinese in pursue of saints and completeness of their knowledge for themselves to achieve the dream of life. Americans in pursue of unlimited personal freedom and happiness for themselves to achieve the dream of life. Two dream with two completely different consciousness, different ideas, different beliefs, and even different cultural backgrounds and political. On one occasion, I see a healthy, not make-up young woman in the street. She rode on a simple tricycle. She also dressed in embroidered black cloth in the rarely seen city. Her two lovely children sat in a pile of debris of the tricycle. She rode a very tough, but still strived to move forward. In the front seems to have something to attract her. I was shocked. This is the kind of indomitable spirit .What is the dream of this young Chinese woman? These two lovely children is her hope. So an ordinary Chinese people's dream and an ordinary American dream is the same point of view. That is the pursuit of happiness, yearning for a more beautiful life. We know an American named Martin Luther King when we are in middle school. He is the leader of the civil rights movement. His phrase "I Have a Dream" spread around the world. Let the world know the power of the American Dream. The American dream is the hope of dream, the success of dream, the dream of equality, happiness of dream. Our country has experienced vicissitudes for the five thousand years. Had a brilliant also humiliation. But our country has never given up the pace of progress. Because in the minds of every Chinese person has a dream. I hope the prosperity of China, People live happy lives. This is what I understand Chinese dream and the American Dream.。
美国梦和中国梦英语作文The "American Dream" and the "Chinese Dream" are two distinct cultural concepts that have captured the imagination of people around the world. Both dreams represent aspirationsfor a better life, but they are rooted in the unique historical, social, and economic contexts of the United States and China, respectively. The American Dream is often described as the set of ideals that includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, as well as the freedom to achieve one's own goals regardless of one's background. It is the belief that anyone, with enough determination and hard work, can attain a happy and successful life in the United States. This dream is closely tied to the country's history as a land of immigrants and its values of individualism and self-reliance.In contrast, the Chinese Dream, as articulated by China's leaders, is a more recent concept that emphasizes national rejuvenation and the pursuit of a better life for the Chinese people. It is centered around the idea of achieving the "great renaissance of the Chinese nation" and often includes the goals of improving the country's economic, political, and cultural standing in the world. The Chinese Dream also encourages individual prosperity but within the context of contributing to the collective strength and well-being of the nation. While the American Dream is more individualistic and focuses on personal success, the Chinese Dream is more collectivist and emphasizes the importance of individual achievements contributing to national goals. The American Dream is often associated with the pursuit of wealth and personal freedom, whereas the Chinese Dream is more about social harmony, stability, and the elevation of the country's status on the global stage. In conclusion, both the American Dream and the Chinese Dream are powerful ideas that inspire people to strive for a better future. However, they reflect the different culturalpriorities and historical trajectories of the United States and China. Understanding these dreams can provide valuable insights into the aspirations and values of these two influential nations.。
