Lesson Two Cotton Properties and UsesA relatively high level of moisture absorption and good wicking properties help make cotton one of the more comfortable fibers. Because of the hydroxyl groups in the cellulose, cotton has a high attraction for water. As water enters the fiber, cotton swells and its cross section becomes more rounded. The high affinity for moisture and the ability to swell when wet allow cotton to absorb about one-fourth of its weight in water. This means that in hot weather perspiration from the body will be absorbed in cotton fabrics, transported along the yarns to the outer surface of the cloth and evaporated into the air. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).Evidences of grafting were obtained by IR from the appearance of CO bands absorbance and the reducing of relative intensity of OH,with respect to cotton.The reserved.Keywords:Polyurethane;Grafting;Cotton1.IntroductionThe nature of the cottonfibre has been extensively investigated.It has been found to consist of a primary wall containing cellulosic and non-cellulosic substances,a secondary wall and a tertiary wall.The cell wall polymers is very easy to form a crystalline composite due to their numerous hydroxyl groups,which help cotton changes dimensions with changing outside force inducing crease to the material.Chemical modification of cotton has been extensively studied for the past years in order to improve its wrinkle resistance,shrinkage resistance and dimensional stability(Andrews,Morris,Donaldson,&Welch;Cirino& Rowland,1974;Cirino&Rowland,1976;Hofreiter,1977; Miller&Wild;Mostafa,El-Sanabary&Youssef,1997; Mostafa&Morsy,2004;Schramm,Rinderer,&Bobleter, 1997;Welch,1992;Welch&Peters,1997).Formaldehyde addition products with urea,cyclic ureas, carbarnate ester or with other amides are widely used to produce cross-linking of the cotton cellulose molecules,as the above wrinkle resistance,smooth drying treatment are called.These products are effective and inexpensive,but have serious disadvantages in respect of relatively poor tenacity retention,abrasion resistance and lowering in whiteness index.They are associated with the disadvantage of formaldehyde splitting during processing and use endangering the health of processors and users(Miller& Wild;Welch,1992).The use of polycarboxylic acids with or without catalysts appears to be much more safety than formaldehyde-based products in view of their environment friendly and non-toxic character.But large cotton fabric strength losses are often obtained with these polycarboxylic acid cross-linking agents(Andrews et al.;Schramm et al., 1997;Welch&Peters,1997).A significant research work has been directed towards modifying hydrophilic charac-teristics of easy-care cotton fabrics by adding polyacrylate to the cross-linking formulation(Cirino&Rowland,1974, 1976;Hofreiter,1977).The tailored chemically modified starch products also have been used to minimize the expected great loss in the tensile strength of thefinished (Mostafa et al.,1997;Mostafa and Morsy,2004).Polyurethane has been used to modify cotton and hence to improve their resistance to creasing and shrinking and/or to improve handle.But the crease-anti of the modification products is not endured and its washability is also not so good(Heywood,1994).It is therefore considered that grafting cotton with polyurethane chains to produce chemical bonding between cotton cellulose and poly-urethane in respect of all-round property improvement or improved property balance.Blocked polyurethane are widely used and patented for a variety of applications different temperatures,depending upon the chemical nature of the group adjacent to the urethane linkage,to generate free isocyanates which react with the hydroxyl groups to give high molecular weight polyurethanes(Kothandaraman& Sultan Nasar,1993;Kothandaraman&Sultan Nasar,1995; Mohanty&Krishnamurti,1998).This work is undertaken with a view of studying the chemical modification of cotton with blocked polyurethane prepared from successive additions of PPG and methyl ethyl ketoxime(MEKO) chosen as blocking agent to MDI.Under extra treated temperature,blocked polyurethane could generate free isocyanates and further react with the hydroxyl group of cotton fabrics.PU could also get cross-linking structure during the grafting process.By this way,high washability and endure crease-anti of treated cotton would be got.2.Experimental2.1.Materials4,40-Diphenylmethane diisocyanate was purchased from Aldrich with no further purification,and methyl ethyl ketoxime from Lancaster.Poly(propylene glyols)with molecular weight of2000(PPG2000)were supplied by Elf Atochem and were continously stirred and degassed over-night at708C in theflask before they were used.The100% cotton used in this work was purchased from Victor Onward Textile Industrial Co.Ltd(3rd).2.2.SynthesisPolyurethane emulsion was prepared according to the following procedure.To prepare polyurethane prepolymer, 3mmol of PPG(2000),2mmol of DMPA(2000),60g of ethyl acetate was added and mixed with6mmol of MDI in a reaction kettle.The mixture was vigorously agitated by a mechanical stirrer.The reaction took place under a dry nitrogen atmosphere at a temperature of approximately 608C.When the–NCO content reached the theoretical value,the reaction was stopped.Then2.1mmol of MEKO was added into the ethyl acetate solution of prepolyurethane and the reaction monitored by IR until total disappearance of the absorption band of isocyanate.The reaction mixture was cooled to508C and2mmol of triethylamine was added to neutralize the free carboxylic groups.Then the mixture of acetone with water was dropped into the reactor until to obtain blocked polyurethane aqueous emulsions.2.3.Reactions with cotton fabricsCotton fabric samples were padded through two dips and two nips in above blocked PU emulsion without further dilution to a wet pickup of ca85%.The fabric samples were dried for3min at1008C and cured for3min at1508C.The samples were then washed several times with THF,and dried at vacuum till constant weight before being analyzed by IR and XPS.2.4.ApparatusFT-IR analysis was carried out with Perkin-Elmer System2000FT-IR analyzer.The XPS analyses were performed with a Physical Electronics5600multi-technique XPS system.The X-ray source was operated at13kV,20mA using Al K a radiation (1486.6eV).Vacuum during analyses was in the10Pa range.All the experiments were carried out at the normal incidence relative to the planfilm surface.The surface morphology of cotton fabrics taken from treated and untreated cotton fabrics was studied in a Hitachi scanning electron microscope(Model S340).3.Results and discussion3.1.Synthesis of blocked polyurethane and its reaction with cotton fabricThe synthesis of blocked polyurethane was performed without catalyst in a one pot-two steps procedure (Scheme1).Under these conditions,triethylamine was added to neutralize the free carboxylic groups.Then the mixture of acetone with water was dropped into the reactor until to obtain blocked polyurethane aqueous emulsions without further purification(Scheme2).Grafting of polyurethane on cotton was blocked polyurethane will happen during curing process (Scheme 3).Reaction between cotton and blocked polyurethane is proved by the weight increase obtained after reaction calculated according to the following formula the weight percent increase ðWPI ÞZG 1K G 0G 0!100%G 0means the weight of untreated cotton,G 1means the weight of cotton after reaction.PU grafted cottons with WPI of 2.2and 5.3%were got by using 5and 10%solid concentration of blocked poly-urethane emulsion to finishing cotton fabrics.The untreated cotton and grafted cotton were investigated using XPS,FTIR and SEM.3.2.XPS analysesFig.1shows the XPS wide scan spectra and the atomic ratios for cotton samples (a)untreated,PU grafted cotton with WPI of 2.2%(b)and 5.3%(c).All the fabric samples were washed in an acetone and dried during 3h at 458C.The relative composition of PU grafted cotton samples surface by XPS analysis is listed in Table 1.The date revealed that the content of N 1s was increased after surface grafting,which indicated that PU chains has been grafted onto the surface of cotton.It can been seen that the content of C 1s in spectra (b)is lower than the content of C 1s in spectra (c).These differences can be attributed to the different WPI.The details of the high resolution O 1s peak (Fig.2)were used to further define the surface coverage of cotton fabrics.The O 1s spectra principally shows four components presentin untreated cotton fabric molecule:OH at 533eV,C–O–C and COOR at 533.5eV,C a O at 532.1eV and CONH 2at 531.1eV (Fig.2(a)).This is consistent with previously reported XPS results for cellulose (Beamson &Briggs,2001).The similar components present in treated cotton fabric have been showed in the O 1s spectra (Fig.2(b)and (c)).But it also showed a big change of the percentage intensities of the components peak,especially for the component at 533eV,assigned mainly to OH in the O 1s envelope of cotton fabric.Untreated cotton,PU grafted cotton with WPI of 2.2%and PU grafted cotton with WPI of 5.3%has represented 27.68,16.40and 9.56%of the total area respectively,which give the evidence that PU has reacted with the OH group of cotton fabric and lead to decrease the content of OH group.3.3.IR(ATR)The presence of graft polyurethane on the surface of the treated cotton fabric samples has been also identified by IR(ATR)spectroscopy,as shown in Figs.3and 4.A broad absorption band over 3500–3000cm K 1,characteristic of hydrogen bonded O–H stretching vibration is common to all the three spectra in Fig.3.However,it was observed from spectra(c)that there was a slight gradual decrease in the intensity of the OH stretching band indicating a gradual increasing of the extent of grafting degree.In heating condition,thermal dissociation of polyurethane could hydroxyl groups of cotton and result in grafted products.It is also proved that PU has been grafted on cotton by the appearance of two bonds at 1712–1731cm K 1(carbonyl C a O stretching in –O(C a O)–NH group)and 1599cm K 1(C a O stretching of carboxylic group)in the spectra of PU cheated cotton samples shown in Fig.4.The lowering of the intensities of the OH in-plane bending bands at 1335,1312and 1201cm K 1in the spectra of PU cheated cotton samples also indicated that PU has been grafted on cotton by reacting with its OH group.In the case of PU grafted cotton samples,the absorption band of C a O stretching inspectra(c)is more intense than which in spectra(b),due to higher degree of grafting.3.4.SEMFig.5are the SEM pictures of untreated cotton fabric and PU grafted surrounded by the grafted PU chain.In addition,they are some polymer layers exist between the fibers stays,which indicated some adhesion of PU occur during the grafting process.4.ConclusionThe XPS measurement demonstrated that it is possible to graft polyurethane chains onto the surface of cotton after finishing process,and the FTIR(ATR)further illustrated that Polyurethane could react with the hydroxyl groups of cotton and result in grafted products.SEM analysis indicates that on the macro-scale the sheet surface is fairly uniformly distributed with polyurethane.The results has showed blocked polyurethane could generate free isocyanates and further react with the hydroxyl group of cotton fabrics.PU could also get cross-linking structure during the grafting process.By this way,high protectionIntroductionLayer-by-layer assembly (LbL),invented by G.Decher,is a unique technique for the fabrication of composite thin films.The sequential adsorption of oppositely charged polycations and polyanions on solid surfaces leads to the buildup of polyelectrolyte multilayer films.The sequential multilayer deposition can be carried out by immersing the substrate into the cationic and anionic solutions,alter-nately.After deposition of each layer,the substrate is immersed into the washing solution.Both adsorption steps can be repeated cyclically to form multilayer structures on the surface of a substrate.A wide range of functional molecules can be incorporated within the film,including nanoparticles,dyes,proteins and other supramolecular species [1–5].In various fields of science such as anti-static coating for plastics,sensors,light emitting diode,fuel cells,polymer capsules,etc.,multilayer films containing nanoparticle have been extensively studied for their potential use,but only a few studies have been concluded for textile mate-rials [4–12].Generally,polyelectrolyte self-assemblies of different textile fibers and structures were studied and these studies investigated only the possibility of using LbL method for textile materials [13–18].There are only a few studies about the use of nanopar-ticles for multilayer film deposition on the textile manufacture of functional textiles for protective clothing.The LbL technique provides opportunity to improve the surface properties of textilefibers by depositing nanolayers of polyelectrolytes,charged nanoparticles and non-reactive dyes in a controlled manner.Zinc oxide nanoparticles are widely used in different areas such as sunscreens,coatings and paints because of its high UV absorption efficiency and strong antibacterial activities on a broad spectrum of bacteria[21].ZnO nano-particles are an attractive semiconductor which provides widespread potential applications.For this purpose,the synthesis of different shape and size of ZnO structures(such as ZnO nanoparticles,ZnO nanoarrays,hollow ZnO micro-spheres,hexagonal ZnO architectures,etc.)has gained much attention[22–26].The application of nano-particles to textile materials is the primary object of several studies aimed at producing functional textiles.There are a few methods in the litera-ture that describe the coating of fabrics with ZnO nano-particles,for example,the pad-dry-cure method,radiation, thermal and chemical treatments.Since these techniques generally require several stages,extra chemical composi-tions or a stabilizer agent,a new method must be considered for nano-ZnO treatments onto textile materials [27–30].In the present study,an attempt was made to improve functional cotton fabrics by the deposition of multilayer films containing ZnO nanoparticle.Cationic cotton fabrics were prepared through cationization process.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and X-ray photoelectron spec-troscopy(XPS)measurements were performed to verify the presence of the deposited nanolayers.Antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and UV protective properties of the fabrics due to the character of the deposited ZnO nanolayers were also tested.Air permeability,white-ness values and tensile strength analyses were performed to examine LbL process efficacy on the cotton fabric proper-ties.In addition,the durability of antibacterial properties was analyzed after10and20washing(40°C and30min) cycles.ExperimentalMaterialsZinc oxide nanoparticles(particle size\100nm,surface area15–25m2/g)were purchased from Aldrich and used for multilayerfilm composition as mentioned below.Nano-particle suspension was prepared at40W for1h by Sonics Vibra-Cell Ultrasonic Homogenizer.The concentration of suspension was adjusted to0.1wt%.The isoelectric point of ZnO is at pH8.6[31].The pH of ZnO nanoparticle sus-pension was adjusted to3and11by using HCl and NaOH, respectively.Mercerized and bleached100%cotton woven fabric(the fabric parameters are plain weave,138,84g/m2,56ends/ cm,31picks/cm,50/1yarn count)was used as substrate for the LBL process.The fabric was cut into*18925cm pieces before cationization process.Cationization ProcessTo generate cationic sites on the surface of cottonfibers, cationization process was used[32].Cationic cotton fabric was prepared by using2,3-epoxypropyl trimethylammoni-um chloride(EP3MAC).EP3MAC was prepared in aque-ous solution by reacting3-chloro-2-hydroxy propyl trimethyl ammonium chloride(CHP3MAC)with NaOH. As EP3MAC reacts with the hydroxyl groups of cellulose, cationic charges on the surface of the sample were created. CHP3MAC(65%)and NaOH crystals were obtained from Aldrich.In200ml of deionized water,100g of CHP3MAC and45.5g of NaOH were added.This solution was pad applied to the cotton specimens at100%wet pickup,and fabric samples were kept for24h at ambient conditions (20°C and%65RH)in Ziploc bags.Cationized cotton fabrics were dried in a commercial dryer at60°C.Random samples which were cut from the fabrics were dyed with anionic dyes to ensure that the cationization process had formed.Nano-ZnO Multilayer Film FormationFor multilayer deposition process,polypropylene transport trays(20cm930cm)were used.In the deposition pro-cess,the positively charged cotton fabrics were immersed into the sequential solutions alternately for5-min periods: (a)anionic ZnO colloid solution(b)deionized water,(c) cationic ZnO colloid solution,(d)deionized water.This deposition cycle was considered as one cycle depositing2 layers and repeated until10and16multilayer ZnOfilms were deposited on cottonfibers.Multilayerfilm deposited on cotton fabrics was dried at60°C and cured at130°C for 3min.CharacterizationX-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy(XPS)Measurements XPS measurements were conducted by using a SPECS spectrometer with an Mg source and a spherical mirror analyzer working in spectrum mode.The total pressure in the main vacuum chamber during analysis was typically4910-7Torr.The chemical elements present on the samples were identified from survey spectra.The survey scans started at1,100eV and ended at0.80eV taking 0.40eV steps with a dwell time of0.30ms.High-resolu-tion scans were performed around peaks of interest. Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM)QUANTA400F Field Emission high-resolution scanning electron microscope(SEM)was used to examine the sur-faces of woven cotton samples at an acceleration voltage of 10kV.The cotton fabric samples were coated with10nm Au/Pd prior to SEM observation.Air Permeability MeasurementTex Test Instruments FX3300Air Permeability Tester III instrument was used to obtain the air permeability values of the untreated and nano-ZnOfilm–deposited cotton fabrics at100Pa pressure according to EN ISO9237Standard. Whiteness Value MeasurementMinolta3600d spectrophotometer was used to obtain the whiteness values of the untreated,cationized and nano-ZnOfilm–deposited cotton fabrics as Stensby index with using D65light sources.Tensile Strength MeasurementThe mechanical tests were performed on a Lloyd LR5K Plus electronic tensile strength machine according to EN ISO2062Standard.The breaking strength and elongation of warp and weft yarns at fracture were tested.Twenty samples were used for each test,and the test results were evaluated with SPSS16.0statistical analysis program. Antibacterial Activity MeasurementISO20645Textile Fabrics-Determination of Antibacterial Activity-Agar Diffusion Plate Test Method was used to obtain antibacterial activity of the multilayerfilm–depos-ited cotton fabrics against Staphylococcus aureus(Gram positive)bacteria.UV Penetration and Protection MeasurementThe ability of a fabric to block UV light is given by the ultraviolet protection factor(UPF)value.UV Penetration and Protection Measurement Systems,Camspec M350UV/ visible Spectrophotometer(SDL/ATLAS)were used to obtain mean UV-A,mean UV-B and mean UPF values of the multilayerfilm–deposited cotton fabrics according to Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS4399:1996. Washing ProcedureAntibacterial activities of nano-ZnOfilm–deposited cotton fabrics were analyzed after LbL process.To determine the durability of the antibacterial property,cotton fabric sam-ples were washed10and20times at40°C for30min with laboratory type washing machine Gyrowash.The multi-layered fabric samples were subjected to laundering according to EN ISO20105-C01standard test method,and AATCC standard detergent without optical brighteners was used throughout the laundering cycles.Results and DiscussionX-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to examine the surface chemical state analysis in the assembly process of nano-ZnO nanoparticlefilm onto the woven cotton fabrics.A survey scan XPS spectrum of cationized woven cotton fabric is shown in Fig.1.As expected,distinctive peaks at 283.95,399.6and530.11eV indicate the presence of carbon,nitrogen and oxygen,respectively.Figure2shows a survey scan XPS spectrum of10and16multilayer ZnO nanoparticlefilm deposited on cationized cotton fabrics. Distinctive peaks at283.95,530.11and1,033.7eV indi-cate the presence of carbon,oxygen and zinc,respectively. With LbL deposition process,the Zinc peak shows increase in intensity with increase in layer number.To evaluate the elemental contents of the cationized,10 and16multilayerfilm–deposited fabrics,XPS-%elemental analysis was performed and obtained results are shown in Table1.During the cationization process,a trace amount (0.8%)of nitrogen was generated in the cationized sam-ples.Zinc amount is found as17.7and18.8%for10and16 multilayer ZnO nanoparticlefilm–deposited cationized cotton fabrics,respectively.Oxygen is mainly originated by the OH groups in the surface of the cotton fabric;but with nano-ZnOfilm deposition,the percentage of oxygen is expected to decline in the ten multilayered fabrics due to the attachment of ZnO nanoparticles with OH groupsof Fig.1XPS spectra of cationically charged woven cotton fabriccellulose.In 16multilayered fabrics,oxygen content is expected to increase with the increase in ZnO content because of the oxygen element coming from the ZnO nanoparticles.To verify the presence of the nano-ZnO–deposited nanolayers on cationized cotton fabrics,SEM was used.Figure 3illustrates 20and 100l m SEM micrographs of 10and 16multilayer ZnO nanoparticle film–deposited cationized cotton fabrics.The surface of the cotton fibers appears to be covered by ZnO nanoparticle solutions and rough surface were obtained in both conditions.Since ZnO nanoparticles were dissolved during the pH calibration (at pH 3with HCl)of the suspensions for LbL deposition process,the crystalline phase of ZnO was changed in the resultant ZnO film–deposited cotton fibers.Before the layer-by-layer deposition process,nanoparticle solutions were prepared.For cationic ZnO solution the pH value was adjusted to 3and at this pH value with HCl,ZnO nano-particles were dissolved.Because of this reason,in multi-layered films,due to cationic ZnO nanoparticle dispersion was deposited on the top of the film,ZnO nanoparticles were not observed in the SEM micrographs in the crys-talline form clearly.To evaluate the LbL process efficacy on fabric proper-ties,air permeability and whiteness values according to Stensby index of the untreated and multilayer–deposited fabrics were determined and results are shown in Table 2.Air permeability tests showed that with increase in layer number,the air permeability values of the fabric decreases approximately by 11and 33.5%for 10and 16nano-ZnO multilayer film–deposited cotton fabrics.These results verified the presence of the deposited layers on the cotton fiber.Similarly,whiteness values of the fabrics decreases as the number of layers increases.Nevertheless,the decreasing of the whiteness values will not cause to change yellowing of the fabric surface within reason.Since the fabric tensile properties can be greatly affected by pH values of solution changes during the LbL process alternate dipping procedures,twenty weft and warp yarns received from the fabrics were selected for tensile test.Table 3shows the tensile strength results of weft and warp yarns received from the untreated,cationized,10and 16nano-ZnO multilayer films–deposited fabrics.Statistically significant difference was not found on the tensile strength values after LbL process.According to these results,it can be concluded that the nano-ZnO multilayer film deposition with LbL process of the cotton fabrics did not cause any significant damage to the structure of the yarns.Antibacterial tests against Staphylococcus aureus bac-teria were performed,and antibacterial activity was demonstrated for both multilayer film–deposited fabrics.Cotton fabrics deposited with 10and 16layers of ZnO nanoparticle films were dipped in a bacteria containing solution by following ISO 20645test method.Figure 4presents antimicrobial activity test results of untreated,10and 16layers ZnO nanoparticle film–deposited cotton fabrics.Nano-ZnO 10and 16multilayer film–deposited cotton fabrics showed 1.5-cm and 1.8-cm inhibition zone,respectively.The antibacterial activity test results clearly demonstrate that higher ZnO nanoparticles content with the increase in layer numbers leads to higher antibacterial activity.Figure 5represents antibacterial activity test results of 10and 20times washed 10and 16nano-ZnO multilayer films–deposited cotton fabrics.After washing cycles,it was observed that the antibacterial activities of fabrics decreased.After 10washing cycles,nano-ZnO 10and 16multilayer films deposited on cotton fabrics showed 1.2-cm and 1.3-cm inhibition zones,respectively.After (280–315nm)regions are 30.7and 22.3%for the untreated fabric,19.47and 11.2%for 10nano-ZnO multilayer film–deposited fabric and 14.7and 7.3%for 16nano-ZnO multilayer film–deposited fab-rics.From this data,it can be seen that the nano-ZnO multilayer film–deposited cotton fabrics showed efficient blocking of UV radiation in both regions.It can be con-cluded that the presence of higher amount of nano-ZnO has led to the higher absorption of UV rays in both regions as the deposited layer numbers are increased on fabrics.The UPF factor for the untreated cotton fabric is obtained to be 4.16;while it is 8and 12.3for 10and 16nano-ZnO multilayer film–deposited fabrics,respectively.About two and threefold increase in UPF factor has been obtained with nano-ZnO multilayer film deposition in comparison with the untreated fabric.In the case of nano-ZnO multilayer film–deposited fabrics;the concentration of ZnO plays a crucial role in the enhanced efficiency of UV protection.Nano-ZnO enhanced the UV-blocking property due to the increased surface area and intense absorption in UV region.The higher concentration of nano-ZnO particles present in the fabric with the increase in the deposition process.XPS and SEM analyses were employed to examine the nanocomposite multilayer films on the cotton fibers.The SEM micrograph results indicated a significant difference in the morphology of the fibers before and after the LbL deposition process.Elemental analysis showed that there is a linear relationship between the deposited numbers of layers and Zn content.LbL deposition process with ZnO nanoparticles does not con-siderable effects on the air permeability,whiteness value and tensile strength properties of cotton fabrics.It was clearly concluded that the nano-ZnO multilayer deposited on cotton fabrics showed excellent antibacterial activity against to Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.Cotton fabrics on which nano-ZnO multilayer films were deposited by LbL process were proved to have better UV protection property than the untreated fabric in addition to the effi-cient antibacterial activity.This work provides a novel and simple method for nano-ZnO nanocomposite
