西方往往将rat与负面意义联系在一起。这与rat的生物学特性或者行为无关，很可能与历史上的黑死病（Black Death）有关系。Rat被看做是邪恶的（vicious）、不洁的（unclean）、寄生的（parasitic）动物（animal），盗取食物并传播疾病。在英语中，rat也指告密者（informant）；to rat on someone指背叛某人并向政府检举其罪行。说某人rat-like意思是他不招人喜欢（unattractive）、可疑（suspicious）。
Mouse则经常成为宠物（pet），被看做好玩（playful）、可爱（loving）或容易侍弄（handling）。经典形象（stereotype）是小巧（small）、鬼鬼祟祟（sneaky）的动物，藏在墙壁内，偷取奶酪（cheese）。这也是卡通形象中经常使用的。米老鼠就叫Mickey Mouse。
鉴于rat在西方的不佳形象，建议将生肖鼠翻译为mouse，而避免翻译为rat。
