It was my first year teaching in a special class,and I wasn’t sure what to expect at our yearly Special Olympics sports meeting.My41had some challenges,from learning disabilities to cerebral palsy(脑瘫).
Mark was one with the latter.Restricted to a42,he had to fight his spasms(抽搐)just to control his movements.However,he always had a positive attitude and greeted everyone with a huge smile.His classmates43him and always took the time to make sure he was included in group activities,especially Mike,Andy and Lucas,three boys who were good at44.Obviously,Mark wanted to be like them, unrestricted by the limitation of his45,and watching them moving on the playing field seemed to fill him with46.
When the day came,Mike,Andy and Lucas placed well in their sports events,and gave the calm audience something to cheer about.Mark sat in his wheelchair on the sidelines,47them on.The final event of the day was the400-meter race.Everyone was invited to either walk or run,according to their ability,around the48length of the track.
When Mike,Andy and Lucas reached the finish line,they49and turned to look behind them.At the50of the crowd on the track,determined not to be left behind,was Mark.All his classmates had51him.He was alone on the track with over half the distance left to cover.Mike,Andy and Lucas looked at each other,and a silent52passed between them.Slowly,they jogged back towards their friend, cheering him on as he had done for them moments before.
The progress was53,but in the end the three star runners and Mark54the finish line together to the enthusiastic cries of their teachers and classmates.Seeing the look on Mark’sface and hands upraised,I came to understand what55the Special Olympics.
Years later,I’m still cheering them on.

When I moved into an empty dormitory for the first time two years ago,I was certain of a few things.Firstly,I realized that I didn’t16anybody at the school.Secondly,I knew that I wanted to work hard at my lessons and learn something useful.And thirdly,I wanted to have a good time with new classmates,without my parents around.
The first17frightened me in the beginning.But that18quickly disappeared.It was the other two goals19ended up being my difficulties.I knew that it was hard to devote enough time to class and to social efforts.But I wanted to20in both.I knew this would be a21,but I didn’t realize how much until classes began.
I got on well with the other girls who lived in my dorm.22,instead of finishing my homework23it was due,I went upstairs and had ice cream with my neighbor.I always finished it the next day between classes.I knew it wasn’t very good and the grade I24showed my lack of effort.
I was25that I needed to find some sort of balance.So I created a schedule that would26my time up between going to class,doing homework,and relaxing.It seemed like a good idea,but I was only able to27it for a few days.A schedule like that was too much pressure.
So I tried another28.Each week I made a list of everything I had to get done during that week.Then,under the list of things I had to get done,I made a list of things I could do if I had time.
This is the method I have used since then.I’m glad that I’ve learned to29things and it has30prepare me for what is to come after graduation.
